Once my blog brings in 1k a month I will begin throwing 10% at marketing. I think 10% is a good test to see if it is worth the return.

I can claim I have a small marketing budget as well. Everything is relative. What do you consider small? Most companies spend 10% to 40% of their sales on marketing. If 10% is small, that still works out to $1,000 a day on ads spending for a site that does $10K. To Markus that is small. To us, it's a little more than small.

You should find out how much it cost to buy a 30 second ad spot on the season final of The Bachelor. Plenty Of Fish had their ad running on every commercial break. Markus may claim he is doing min spending on Adwords, but how about TV or radio, or other traditional advertising outlets?

I have nothing to be jealous of Markus. He is a really cool guy. But I've been interviewed enough myself that I know how to "spin the media" to my advantage.

In interviews he claims to have a very small marketing budget. He also claims he spends a minimum on Adwords.

Also....this huge marketing budget you speak of had to have come from somewhere.

I smell jealousy and envy in the air...

In response to mrrbob's comments about the site's "ugly' or un-slick nature...well, there are some in the AdSense world who deliberately creat topical content only to have it display poorly so the user will click on the AdSense ad's and "leave'.

Of course it's hearsay but you can make an educated guess at its revenue.

The site gets 600,000 visitors and over 10 million page views per day. Also 4 million messages are sent to members or posted in the forums each day.

$10,000 from 10 million page views per day works out to $1 CPM. Hardly anything amazing. If anything the $10,000 per day seem low for a site that gets this much traffic. Then again, he doesn’t put AdSense on all pages.

"His site is pulling in more than $10,000 per day from Google, he told me..."
Total hearsay, I won't believe any of these claims of how much this site, or that blogger are making from AdSence until I see it in an annual report for a publicly traded company, or stated by Google.

As for being ugly, I think it is ugly because it consumes less bandwidth, which in turn means less overhead costs.

For a large, high traffic site, the last thing you want is to have a "slick" and flashy site that will hog bandwidth. KISS.

At least, that's my impression from visiting the site.
