1,806 Unconfirmed Subscribers

written by John Chow on September 24, 2007

How one lazy bum made $176,697.50

The first John Chow dot Com newsletter went out last night at around 9PM. If you haven’t received it yet, it means one of two things. The first is you didn’t subscribe. If that’s the case, you’ve missed the first issue, which is too bad because I think there were some really good topics in it. The other reason you didn’t get the newsletter is you subscribed but you didn’t confirm your email address.

My newsletter uses a double opt in mailing list. A person subscribing must click a link to confirm their email address. If they don’t click the link, they don’t get the newsletter or the link to the Make Money Online eBook. Double opt in also prevents other people from subscribing you to my list without you knowing. Imagine my shock when I checked to list and found there were 1,806 unconfirmed subscribers.

I have a feeling the main reason for the big unconfirmed count is because of spam filters catching the email asking subscribers to confirm their email address. I have deleted all 1,806 unconfirmed subscribers. If you subscribed to the newsletter and haven’t received it, then please subscribe again and add johnchow@johnchow.com to your safe list so the spam filter doesn’t delete the email asking you to confirm your email.

For those who did received the first newsletter, I hope you liked it. And for those who asked, the newsletter software I used to send out and manage the newsletter is call SendStudio NX by Interspire.

Maybe you should consider sending opt-in reminders after a week or something?
There is plenty of money to be made with mailing lists, if you use them effectively and can write decent copy.

I think I also subscribed and didnt get it

Normally, I will straight delete all spam folder emails without second look! Luckily, you inform us here. I found your newsletter was sleeping there!

i got both your newsletter and feed release..

Gotta add those filters... the amount of spam these days is a joke!

Yep. Your newsletter is at the top of the to-be-read list. Well, why not run it off to the printer so I'm certain to read it when I go off to brush my teeth..... Good ideas, although some Greenpeace-fanatic could claim I'm wasting paper. Well, maybe I'll print on both sides and save some paper at the same time..... :-)

Sorry about all the e-mails unconfirmed. Still hope you will consider the idea about creating a tell your friends affiliate-program. Give 5 points for each signup and let the best referrrer win an e-book or whatever else you could send out without destroying your budget.

I still think that type of idea is worth at least 100$, but I'm giving you a rebate. Only today, and spezial prize for ya: PayPal: h_blunck@gmx.net

Just kidding. But it could add some extra readers to an excellent blog of yours. :-)

John, Thanks for the newsletter. It reads like trade secrets were being sent to us. Minor glitch though: should've been me who won the book!

I got it and liked it.

I got the newsletter, a big thanks for keeping it simple text and not embedding thousands images and all that junk that most people feel the need to today. Mine was delivered to a gmail address so no problems there.

I subscribed out of curiosity and was pleasantly Surprised the newsletter was of a much higher quality than your post have been lately, so keep up the good work.

The newsletter was great and i believe that will become one of your source of income...

Can you send me the newsletter again possibly?

i can forward it to you if you want to contact me.

Thanks. I just contacted you through your site.

Okay. I subscribed and confirmed. Dang procrastination.

Now, um, is there any way to get the previous issue if you weren't subscribed? Pretty please.

Thanks!

This newsletter will prove to be your next gold mine. Just wait til it grows in size.

i have been in email marketing/newsletters and I can say that they are a gold mine. i have done some major campaigns for clients and they have made hundreds of thousands of dollars with a single email sent.

many many companies use email as their # 2 , sometimes # 1 money maker.

john, after reading your email, i would suggest you spice it up. maybe send it in html format (also in regualr text). you should give an option for members to choose what format they want it in.

that way you can sell ads in the email, plus it gives the uniform
look of your brand.

with that said, i felt like the newsletter was missing something, not sure what yet though.

Very nice newsletter, John. I tend to stay away from them because they're always full of spam and stuff like that, but this was a really straight forward, to the point newsletter that I really enjoyed. I look forward to the next one. I especially liked the point about....Oh man, can't say...Anyways, awesome newsletter!

Ah, I was going to ask what software you used. Beat me to it. Thanks.

I'm happy to report that I did receive the newsletter. It appears to be full of useful information!

I got it John. Thanks for the BlogRush tip. Let us know when you are sure if it's legitimate or not.

I didnt get it either, time to go check my spam folder

I did get the newsletter goodness. Thanks for letting us know what software it was.

I noticed in the RSS feed he spelled it @johnchw.com but I noticed he fixed it in his post.

I thought I signed up for it but I guess I never did since I didn't receive it nor did I have to confirm my address ;)

I tried subscribing again for good measure, but it says I'm already subscribed (which I knew I was). Something is wrong here.

Could have been your ISP's spam filter block it before it got to you.

please dont blog about the million euro wiki. PLEASE. if you must, keep it short. john cow is copying the million dollar wiki just liek he copied you and i think it wont be a success this time around. well, any sales he makes will make it a success but it wont take off liek he thinks it will.

LoL seems like he has already wrote about it (just came back and am still reading the posts i missed).

I got the following message in the confirmation email which I think is confusing if you only want to confirm your email and not a link for a download.

"To finalize your subscription and get the free John Chow dot Com eBook, please click on the confirmation link below. Once you've done this, your subscription will be complete and you'll recieve the link to download the eBook."

John,

I did not receive your newsletter.

1. I am a confirmed subscriber, and I have received your pdf also more than a month ago. I really think something is wrong with the process and I guess many of the 1600 users must be real ones, but I guess since we all like you a lot, we will go back and subscribe again. So dont worry about that one.

2. Your post has a spelling mistake in your domain name. Please fix so that it will help and make it easier for some first time users (it shows johnchw.com).
Regards,
Dingloo

hmmm....
seems u will have to double check all ur process. or else we will become a big spam headache for u.

what say?

Yogesh

Number seems a little low for the massive amount of traffic you get, and the fact you had a giveaway wrapped around it.

Will any new information that is not on the site be included in the newsletter?

I liked the newsletter very mutch. And as you said John, if you didn´t get it, you lost out

it was okay but i felt like it should have had more.

I enjoyed it as well - it had a lot of good info

Of course.

It wouldn't come from John Chow if it wasn't REALLY GOOD.... ;-)

I subscribed and confirmed (double) but didn't receive it. What gives?!

Maybe check junk mail?

I don't have a junk mail folder. Everything goes to my inbox.

try using a different email addy.
