Yes it’s true! Cadillac is planning an Escalade Hybrid so you can have the same pimpin’ pleasure with 25 percent less guilt! When this came across the GM news wire, my first thought was, “Wow! That’s like that fat lady I saw at 7-11 filling up a Super Big Gulp with Diet Coke.”

The Cadillac Hybrid was unveiled at last month’s GM TEN fashion event. The event brings together the worlds of fashion, automotive design and entertainment under one roof. The “green machine” theme of the show features General Motors advanced technology vehicles, including many hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and hybrids like the new environmentally friendly Escalade that is sure to get into Al Gore’s good book.

So just how green is the new Escalade? GM claims that harmful emissions will drop significantly, and fuel economy will be boosted by some 25 percent. Upon hearing that my thoughts were, “Wow! It goes from 12MPG to 15MPG!” I guess 25 percent increase sounds a lot better than traveling three more miles on a gallon of gas.

Visually, the Hybrid Escalade looks the same as the normal escalade, but will no doubt cost considerably more. My feeling on this? The money you pay to get that three extra miles per gallon can buy a lot of gas!

Since I’m on the topic of Cadillac Escalade, I figure now would be a great time to post this picture of Jennifer Love-Hewitt with a limited-edition Grammy Escalade. No Hybrid for her!

‘25% less’, but still most likely using a way more than the average European car - I honestly don’t see why the US don’t increase the taxes on cars like this one.
This kind of cars are overkill for 99% of the population, and yet Joe and Jane Average get their daily shopping with an SUV for less than a European pays for a Smart ;)

Some people need these large vehicles. Don’t get me wrong…i’m not arguing that everyone needs them. I know there are a lot of people who drive them frivolously. I’m just saying some people need a big vehicle.

It’s not like this SUV is cheap ;) For the same money you could also get a normal shaped car that drives twice as far on the same amount of gasoline, if not further. Not quite green, but less worse than this kind of crap.

That’s hella cool. I can’t wait for the hybrid Corvette with organic leather seats!

I don’t think cutting an Escalade’s fuel consumption by 25% will make a dent in pollution output. People will just drive their SUV that much more since it’s now cheaper to operate. Probably just end up creating more pollution than before the hybrid!

Clearly this is a marketing ploy to generate some units sold for GM. The sure need it!

Global warming is a crock anyway. All the Co2 made by man every year is a very miniscule percentage compared to the co2 made from decaying planets, animal feces , dead animals etc.

So small that it’s unlikely it is having an effect on our climate.

No, I am not. including all factories and other sources of CO2 in the world. Every unnatural (i.e. decaying bodies is natural) source of CO2 from man, is a tiny tiny fraction of the CO@ that is released every year.

I don’t think you’ve got any highly rated sources to back that up Dave. Let’s face it, mankind does contribute bigtime to the amount of CO2 - you can simply calculate that, every scientists will admit that. If the CO2 is the main cause is questionable, but not whether it’s increasing or not, it’s simply been measured.

The problem is that my 1989 GMC Jimmy gets 12-15 MPG with its 350 V8 and my 2006 Kia Rio averages about 32-36 on the highway–neither of which are hybrids. Since the Rio gets better mileage–and is A LOT lighter on my pocketbook–than most of the hybrids on the market what motivation do I have to change?

I agree with your fat lady analogy. SUV’s are just big obnoxious living rooms on wheels. I would much rather drive a Monster Truck!

Seriously, I recently was talking to a car salesman
and he was recommending against buying a hybrid car. First of all, you are paying a premium for a new product. Also, it is very likely that the electric battery will have to be replaced in a couple of years at a significant cost. All this cost for a fractional gas savings only make sense if you are a major league commuter putting serious mileage on your car.

One more thing I’d like to point out; Most people think that most of our oil consumption comes from driving cars. In fact, only a third of U.S. oil consumption is used for gasoline, and only around
a third of gasoline use is used by passenger cars. The bottom line is that only around 15% of U.S. oil consumption is due to passenger car use.
( Most use comes from manufacturing) So really if everyone changed their vehicles for a 25% gain
in mileage, it would not really be that significant.

I think buying a gas guzzler like this (even in it’s hybrid form) is irresponsible. I don’t think there is a need for this kind of vehicle except for showing off. But i guess a lot of people like to flash, so they buy it.

While this hybrid Escalade is not going to revolutionize gas consumption it’s at least a step in the right direction. In five years hopefully the hybrid Escalade will actually get some decent gas mileage to make purchasing it actually worth it. Does anyone think in ten years or longer most cars are going to be hybrids and some even electric? With gas prices at $3.20 in Southern California I can only dream.

On the Hewitt front they were filming her show Ghost Whisperer down the street from where I live but alas no star spottings. Look for an upcoming episode with a really creepy house, the same house they used in Jim Carrey’s 23 movie that just came out.

My brother-in-law the movie industry driver spent several months at the end of last year driving a star around in an Escalade. First one was 2 weeks old when he picked it up, and had to be returned 2 weeks later when it’s oil leakage got so bad that they had to add oil every hour just to get it through the last day. Second one was a month old and didn’t leak, but he brought it by my place and was showing me how the body panels didn’t line up and other little things that certainly shouldn’t be on a very expensive vehicle. He said the first one had the exact same issues.
