3 Ways Bloggers Can Make More Money Online

During last month’s Affiliate Summit West in Las Vegas, Lewis Howe cornered me at the ASW meet market with a video camera and asked me for the three best ways for bloggers to make money online.

This is not the first time Lewis has asked me for blogging advice. He did the same thing back in 2009 when Zac Johnson and I set up our own makeshift “Ask The Expert” booth at the Blog World Expo. We found an empty table in the middle of the Blogworld show floor and took it over. The idea of our Ask The Experts booth was to answer any questions attendees may have about how to make money by blogging, or anything else for that matter.

Below is the video that Lewis made interviewing me at ASW11. Below that is the video from the 2009 Blog World “Ask The Expert” booth. Enjoy!

It’s giving me fresh ideas for my newly launched blog !
Nice videos, thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. Hey John,

The videos are pretty good. I wonder why one of them is on YouTube and one on Vimeo.

AWeber is good but you could expand more on how to build email list. Aweber doesn’t do it for you all by itself.

      1. John Chow says:

Back in 2009 I used Vimeo for my video because the quality was much higher than YouTube. YouTube has since caught up.

        1. Yeah we still remember those clear colours of many carnivals with Sally.

Vimeo really rocks but however Youtube is also doing great and good for those countries where internet is slow.

          1. PPC Ian says:

I’m a big fan of YouTube because Google owns YouTube. If you build out a great YouTube channel that gets lots of friends, subscribers, and ultimately views, you can expect that authority to flow through to your website, at least in my opinion. However, the one big downside is the time limit on videos. I wish I could make my videos on YouTube longer!

        2. Bob says:

This is a great video John. I thank you for uploading this vid here. I have to think about how to earn money online.

          1. Hey PPC Ian,

YouTube is now allowing longer videos than 10 or even 15 minutes for selected people at least. They may extend it to more and more people. I have tried it this Saturday/Sunday and my video from the last Dot Com Pho which is over 21 minutes was accepted on YouTube.

        3. Kirk Taylor says:

I struggled with YouTube in early 2010. Next go I will use them again to see.

          1. Melvin says:

Guys, am I the only one using Viddler? 😀

          2. d3so says:

I think you are melvin lol. I’ve never even visited viddler.

    2. Iso Blog says:

Nice video.John you should publish more video like this.thanks

      1. PPC Ian says:

I agree! I could really benefit from more videos like this. Also, I really liked the fact that I could just watch the video without entering my email address, on this one. 🙂

        1. John Chow says:

If you become a YouTube partner, you are no longer subjected to the 15 minute YouTube time limit. Your new limit become a max 20GB video. I have never uploaded a 20GB video before. I think that’s like 4 hours of HD!

          1. PPC Ian says:

Thanks John, I appreciate the tip and will definitely look into this!
            All the best,

      1. Fairooz says:

Dude, What do you mean by this single letter? 😛

    3. ikki says:

      im totally agree with you

  2. Why do you still push Aweber John? Lots of big time bloggers have outright said they suck…. including the Problogger team.

    1. John Chow says:

Because Aweber is the best. And if you go to subscribe to Problogger’s blog, you’ll see he still use Aweber so don’t know where you’re getting your info from. Let’s see. Shoe’s still using Aweber, Zac is still using Aweber, Copyblogger’s still using Aweber, etc. Where are these big time bloggers that’s not using Aweber?

      1. d3so says:

I think shoe is using another service now.
I see many people use icontact including list building great, Frank kern.
        I’m still with aweber though.

        1. awebar is still doing great but these raising voice against them is not good for their business.

          1. i totally agree. Aweber is good but the voices are not realyl good for them. I admit i am thinking of changing service beacause of these voices

        2. John Chow says:

Shoe is still using Aweber on his blog. He is also using Infusionsoft for his Shoemoney Offers. Frank Kern uses both as well. They are not switching from Aweber to something else. They are adding another service on top of Aweber.

          1. PPC Ian says:

I don’t know that much about email marketing compared to PPC and SEO, but must say I’ve been extremely happy with AWeber. 🙂 Very affordable and robust solution. I’m especially a fan of all the great, free templates they have for email capture forms and popups.

          2. I think Shoe is using MailChimp as well because I get some messages from him & you can easily see that it’s from MailChimp. However, the main newsletters I see are sent using Aweber.

    2. @Benjamin, I’m using Aweber too and I have no problems with their service. Maybe you will like to tell us how lousy Aweber is … let’s try to be objective here.

    3. Hotdogman says:

Mailchimp rocks! It’s easy to use and free until you can’t afford not to pay for it. An email responder is like white bread at the super market. They’re pretty much all the same at the core, it’s what you put in the sandwich.

      1. AWeber is good and Mailchimp probably is OK too. The point is to use a good autoresponder. AWeber is John’s choice and I use them too. Whoever says they suck is not objective. Their service is outstanding.

        1. PPC Ian says:

I agree. I have been using AWeber for over a year now and have not had one problem. It’s a really great, affordable email platform. It’s especially well known and effective for bloggers, but can be adapted to any website (I have AWeber as my email platform on some of my static SEO sites too).

        2. ikki says:

nice way to add money with adsense

    4. Fairooz says:

      Why does aweber suck?
I dont find any reason to say awebers sucks! 😛

      1. @Fairooz, me either. Works great for me too!

    5. Kirk Taylor says:

So what program is supposed to be superior and doesn’t “suck”? I’ve never seen anyone say AWeber “sucks”….

      1. John Chow says:

I think he might be referring to InfusionSoft. However, that is more that just email software and plans start at $199 per month. You’ll need the $299 per month plan to get all the features.

        1. Melvin says:

I think InfusionSoft is really for hardcore internet marketers like Kern, Reese or etc. For us bloggers, Aweber should work just really fine. I mean it starts just at $19 and the upgrades are affordable too.

          1. Hey Kirk,

The only people I ever heard talking badly about AWeber were those complaining about their rates. Those people also resent the fact that people like John get some referral feeds.

Envy and jealousy drive people to attack what is good. Unfortunate but true.

  3. Dino Vedo says:

Easy on the drinking john your turning red!! 😉

    1. John Chow says:

That’s from the red walls of the room! 😀

      1. Hotdogman says:

A lot of my pictures and videos had that orange hue as well. The Wynn should go with more subtle wall coverings.

  4. Donny Gamble says:

Another way they can make more money is to do something that no one else is doing that will catch a lot of other peoples attention.

    1. @Donny, it really got to be that interesting and novel that really captures everyone’s attention. If not, it is just another marketing gimmick out to scam people’s money.

      1. Hey Donny,

Unless one is a genius and can make money with something that no one else has while there is a demand for it, your advice sounds good but is not very practical.

    2. You pretty much hit the jackpot there. It doesn’t even have to be something that’s in-demand. The product could turn out to be something people didn’t ever think about, but suddenly realized that they could use it. You don’t know until you try.

  5. @Dino, that’s funny dude! But John does look kinda scary with that red face, as if the blood in his veins just waiting to burst … hahahahh!

  6. Karen Marrow says:

Great tips in the first video and the second video was very entertaining!!!

    1. yeah on this kind of function we always see new kind of john.

    2. ikki says:

      sure karen (y)

  7. Simple but solid advice. It works, too.

The beer tells me you love what you’re doing, John.

  8. Hi John thank you very much for your video!! it’s awesome!! you give me an idea!

  9. Consistency and Passion …

These are two main ingredients …

I would love to add one more thing – Labour hard in the right direction. Check your growth and set the next target which you want to achieve.

    Keep pushing yourself.

    1. PPC Ian says:

I agree ZK! So many people get into the online marketing game thinking it’s a get rich quick scheme. It truly requires consistency, dedication, hard work, and investment. It’s a real business, as John points out. It’s really interesting to hear that John made no money in his first 8 months blogging. That’s truly motivating and consistent with my experience with websites in general (you can’t expect to make a ton of money in your first year).

  10. Togrul says:

    Hey John,

thanks for sharing this video. I wish I were there too. Perhaps some day I will 🙂

  11. Fairooz says:

John, Thanks for this video! it’s awesome one!

    1. ikki says:

john is awalyas sharing great tips

  12. nicedl says:

thanks for nice video, John. I’m looking for a free solution for email marketing. Can you suggest me one?

    1. John Chow says:

There are a few free software that you can download but they’re not very good or as feature packed as Aweber. Sometime free is extremely expensive. How much money are you losing by not having a list?

      1. Kirk Taylor says:

Add in the danger of switching companies when you get established, as you have to make all your subscribers opt in again…. Right?

        1. Yeh, I’ve thaought of that as well. Some time ago I used a free tool that you paid $5 + $0.01 per email you sent out, but it didn’t have any monthly costs. However, it did not have all the possibilities that aweber provided so I got a bit unsure how I would do if I some day decided to switch service.
Can you just submit an excel document with all the emails to get them added to the account or how does it work? :O

  13. Neon SRT4 says:

Excellent Video. Thanks for Sharing John.

  14. PPC Ian says:

Awesome video, thanks so much for sharing John. I couldn’t agree with your tips more. I really like your point about consistency and commitment. My blog has been around for over a year, but I make far less from it than my other websites. However, I’m in this for the long term, like you said.

  15. fas says:

WEll every business you have to be consistent.

  16. Hi John,

I really agree with your tips. I couldn’t agree more about your point regarding consistency and commitment.

    1. Neon SRT4 says:

Well, why can’t you able to agree? Can you explain more to us?

  17. Nice video John

Keep up the good work bro

  18. ikki says:

    nice tips john

  19. This video is very informative. I have learn a lot and hopefully it will increase my online earnings. Personally i like YouTube because its very user friendly and of course has the larger percentage of online users.

  20. GTA 5 says:

Hi John! I really like this great video 🙂 Thanks a lot for sharing it with us all these useful tips to earn more money online!

  21. very informative video thanks for sharing

  22. Personally, I love aweber. I have implemented it on several sites. The best thing about it is the customer service, when you use something a lot, you have many questions, and they were quick to resolve each of them. If it would fit my blog topic, I would promote them as an affiliate.

  23. Gyanguru says:

    Very Impressive…. 🙂

  24. Nice videos, though you promote Aweber and your websites a little bit too much according to me since most people are not willing to pay that amount of money for lists right away. However you gave me some ideas that I’m going to continue exploring so thanks for that. =)

    Have a great day!

    1. The thing about the cost of Aweber is that it is certainly higher than what one would pay for starting a business. However, if you go with a free option and later want to switch over to Aweber, it will cost you quite a bit, both time and money.

  25. Phil says:

Checked out Aweber, pretty cool site. Excellent video great tips.

    1. Aweber is just too good

      I like it too

  26. John, can you explain a little bit about the “YouTube Partner Program”. I am curious to know a bit more on how-to become a partner, the monthly fees, and the benefits of the program. I have been considering to join the program and would like to hear your experiences with using the program. Also, I noticed that the application qualification process stipulates for you to upload videos attracting thousands of viewers for each video.

  27. Michelle says:

Thank you for sharing your video, seeing someone with the same convictions on how effort and loving what you do will work better then expensive gimmicks. Very heartening, and extremely insightful

  28. Hi John, thanks for sharing the tips on making more money via blogging. Have been blogging for a while and was not making lots of money. With your 3 mind blowing tips, I think I am going to do better now.

    1. Wishing you good luck bro

      Keep it up

  29. Allen Walker says:

Short and to the point. Great tips! 🙂

  30. John,

That’s a good advice – Consistency and passion will take you there! I believe no matter what kind of job, you must have that passion and it will definitely leads you to success.

  31. ikki says:

    adsense is the better

  32. Allie says:

I am going to break my own rule in commenting but I need to. (My rule is to leave great content behind.) BUT! I just wanted to say YOU ROCK, John Chow!

That was great content, right? Not bad for my first comment on John Chow.com

  33. I felt a lot better when I heard you say you didn’t make anything for the first 8 months or so. I think you have to passionate about anything you want to win, they used to call it work ethic. Great advice.

    1. Exactly. It’s hard to not make anything when you first start unless you have a full time job. Making money online requires patience and hard work. There is no other secret.

  34. I have been using Aweber for more years then I care to remember. I do think in the past that I tried out other alternatives but they simply could not compare with what I was already getting over at Aweber.

Thanks again for another great video John.

    1. Of course Aweber is probably the best service provider for email marketing. They have a good tracking record and they keep improving their services which isn’t the case for all the service providers.

  35. Neon SRT4 says:

Excellent Video John. I love the Video.

  36. ibnujusup says:

    ” do you know everything..”
