When I first started making money online, it was back in the mid-90s. I first got started with Amazon and pushing their affiliate program, then moving into the world of CPA marketing, and even launching my own websites and lead generation funnels. It wasn’t til 2007 that I decided to start my blog at ZacJohnson.com and turn my expertise into a real brand and business. Without diving too much into it, this was one of the best business and personal decisions I had made yet.
So why did I find success in the world of blogging and content creation, when so many others fail? Mostly because I was already an expert at what I was doing, and I enjoyed the concept of creating content to help others learn how to do the same. For anyone that has an expertise and is really good at what they do, they should have similar results if they are willing to put in the time, work and effort.
Thanks to the power of the internet, it’s now easier than ever to get started with an online business, based on your expertise. That is exactly what I’m going to be showing you in this article today.
Start a Blog and Build Your Foundation
As mentioned earlier, when I decided to launch a blog of my own at ZacJohnson.com, that’s when things really started to get crazy. The problem most people have with blogging is that they are all too focused on the concept of creating content and making millions of dollars online like John Chow. That’s just not realistic.
The reason why John makes so much money online is not just because he has a massive following and huge mailing list, it’s because he knows how to monetize his content and get people to buy. This is one of the most important components when building out a website or blog for profit. Don’t just create content for the sake of creating it. Create it to provide value and get people to take action, while also building a brand and following in the process. Then the ‘internet fame’, opportunities and revenue will soon follow.
With that now in mind, follow my how to start a blog guide where I walk you through each process step-by-step. It’s easy to start a blog, but without the right foundation and direction thereafter, you will simply get lost in the mix. Use your blog as a platform to grow your brand, not a gateway or expectation for an immediate cash flow.
Launch a Membership Site or Online Course
Once you know what you are an expert at and have an online following, it’s time for you to figure out the best way to start profiting from it. One of the most common and best ways to accomplish this is to create an online course or membership site to access premium content. You will commonly see this in the world of online marketing and business, as it’s something that can easily be taught through video lessons and watching someone complete these tasks for you to follow along. Log into your Facebook account right now and I’m sure you’ll see ‘gurus’ pushing their video advertisements to you for their next webinar or free PDF report. All of these will likely funnel you into a paid membership or premium course for you to purchase.
However, don’t think that you need to limit your expertise and profit-potential to just online marketing. I’ve seen experts who specialize in photography, physical therapy, life coaching, cooking, exercising and legal help find a ton of success online with their own online courses or premium content. Best of all, if you know how to type content, take screenshots or do online video, you are more than well-equipped to launch an online course or membership site of your own.
To give you a few examples of what’s worked well for others in the past, let’s take a look at some case studies from Kajabi — which is an all-in-one solution for selling digital content online. Some really successful experts like Chalene Johnson and James Wedmore are using the platform to generate millions annually. To keep things realistic, let’s take a look at two other examples of experts within their own niche markets and how they used online courses and premium content to generate even more money online.
- Bob Heilig – Through the use of online video and putting himself out there for new audiences to find, Bob was able to go from zero dollars online to over $200,000 in his first month after implementing a monetization plan. Just like John Chow has a goal to produce a new video today, Bob had that same mindset and was able to turn it into an online course, then figuring out how to effectively market it through video outlets like Facebook Live and Periscope.
- Greg Todd – When it comes to starting a ‘local’ business, you are going to have a lot of upfront costs. If you are doing any type of coaching or consulting services, these can easily be accomplished through online video and live interactions. Throw social media into the mix, and Greg was able to tap right into his target audience and make a full-time business thanks to his new online courses.
As you can see, when it comes to making money online… it’s quite amazing how many people are putting their expertise to use and multiply their income by several factors. I’m sure some of you might not think there is a market for your expertise… but there is only one way to find out. Imagine where the mentioned examples above would be if they didn’t take a stab at it?
Establish Yourself as an Expert within Your Space
If you want to be able to make big money for your time and expertise, you are going to need to actually be seen as an expert. Sure, starting a blog and having a website are great for branding yourself and being out there, but everyone already has one of these. If you really want to be seen as an expert, you need to start getting in front of the right audiences.
Two excellent ways to accomplish this are through guest blogging and participating in expert roundups. In both cases, you need to focus on the value provided for both the audience and the site where the content is being published. This is something way too many content creators and brands are doing wrong.
- Guest blogging is the concept of contributing content to other sites within your niche in exchange for getting exposure to their audience. This is a timely process, but it’s also one that comes at no financial cost (as you are putting the time in to create the content). Guest blogging can also help with SEO and branding. The end goal of guest blogging on other sites should be to create amazing content that gets placed in front of a whole new audience, while also branding you as the expert who wrote it.
- Expert roundups are all over the place lately. The concept here is simple… a site owner interviews a bunch of experts within their niche and asks them one simple question. The site owner then posts one big mega post with all of the results. The benefit to the site owner here is that they get a ton of great content from other experts in their space (who will likely also share the content with their audiences). This also brings a lot of well-known and trusted names to their site as well. No matter what niche you are in, putting together an expert round-up on your site should be a no-brainer. Also, once you start being seen as an expert in your own space, you will likely start getting emails to participate as an expert in such posts on other sites.
When it comes to being seen as an expert, there are many things you can do. No matter what options you choose for getting your name out there, make sure they are legit and that your message is always seen as providing value. Other methods for personal promotion include podcast interviews, utilizing social media, posting videos to YouTube and also offering great value through your own website or blog.
Go Beyond Just Being an ‘Affiliate Marketer’ or ‘Blogger’ in 2017
With another year in the books and this one just getting started, it’s time to think about where you want to be a year from now. Sure, being an affiliate marketer and blogger is great, but are you seeing the financial rewards you’ve been looking for?
