5 Characteristics of a Successful Blogger in My Opinion

Blogging has changed the way people communicate and share information. I consider “blogging” an art that, when perfected, can make you enormous money in a very short period of time. Some of the top bloggers are making $30,000 to $125,000 per month, which is more than some people can dream of. It was their hard work and dedication that paid off and now they have changed the whole concept of online marketing. However, it is said 100 new blogs go online each day and is increasing each year. Much of the increase in blogging has to do with the ability to get published quickly and with very little money. You can register a domain, hosting plan, and install WordPress in under 4 minutes. If you think it can’t be done…trust me, I’ve done it myself.

If you want to be successful with Internet marketing and really stand out compared to the others, then you have to perfect your skills. Everyone will have different skills that help them create engaging content, however, I believe there are a few fundamentals skills and/or characteristics that are universal among those who have succeeded where others failed.

Let’s get started and these are in no particular order…

Ability to Stay Motivated

If I said it was easy, I’d be lying and anyone who tells you making money online is simple is not being honest with you. If you don’t believe me that you have to work your ass off, then ask someone who is successful online. Today, no matter what niche you’re in, it’s going to be very competitive. You’ll have to stay focused and motivated even when you feel your efforts are unrewarded. Having the world as your potential audience can be a positive, however, it can be a negative at the same time. More people means the harder it is for people to find you, especially when you’re starting off. However, once you’ve been discovered, you can quickly gain momentum. This is a struggle that is going to be tough so make sure you stay motivated and keep pushing forward. Remember this the next time you feel like giving up…

You’ll never know how close you are to success if you give up. If you give up right now, you’d never know that potentially next week, Monday could have been the day you convert your first sale.

Ability to be Creative

To be successful online, you need to be creative, which will help you find angles others can’t. It will keep you ahead of your competition by providing unique ways to create content, market your business, and even network with others. Remember you’re going to have competition no matter what your niche and I’ve found only two types of businesses will excel.

First, obviously tapping into a niche with no competition and is popular. This niche will have an audience and your blog is the only one that caters to these people. However, this is very tough as 95% of the niches have been covered, which is why people are doing this…

Doing something better than the others gives you an edge on your competition. This is why you have to be creative and find ways to put a twist on what you’re doing. It will help you get an edge on your competition.

The ability to be creative will help you come up with unique content ideas that stand out compared to others published online. However, generating a “UNIQUE” topic idea is only 20% of the equation and the next 80% comes from the ability to…

Create High Quality Content

Google has made no secret about tweaking their search engines to identify high quality content. It has even said content that provides value will enjoy higher rankings within the SERP’s. However, you need to have the skills to streamline the content creation process. You need to ensure you have the right elements in place when you create content so it is of value to your readers and Google. Here are the fundamentals of high quality content..

First, you must perform keyword research so you know what’s trending in your niche. No point in writing content which no one wants to read. This would be a waste of time and your effort. Next, you need to go in depth when writing and provide a complete solution for your readers. The best content provides a solution, so when you publish your post, make sure you have a complete solution outlined. High quality content will be interesting so your readers stay engaged and don’t leave because their bored. This can be accomplished by simply asking questions and writing in your own voice.

Here are a few more factors to consider before publishing content…

  • Proper formatting
  • Grammar and sentence structure
  • Keywords in the right place
  • Title, description, and other meta data
  • Images to help understand content
  • Videos to keep content engaging

Ability to Create a Network

SOCIAL_NETWORK_JOHN

It’s a tough industry and if you’ve just started out, you need to build a network of people relevant to your niche. It’s a great way to tap into readership that otherwise would be impossible. Having a solid network of people makes it easier to gain social traction as relevant bloggers will share your content. Networking will provide you with guest blogging opportunities perfect for generating traffic. When faced with competition, you have two options.

First, bump heads with them and try to do everything on your own. This means you’re up against fierce competition who have been in the industry for years. Or,

You can network with them, exchanging ideas, helping each other, and opening more opportunities for the both of you. This can be rewarding, providing you with traffic, social engagement, and conversions. Keep an open mind and embrace competition because if utilized correctly, it can be an important tool for growth.

Ability to Create Social Engagement

When I first started blogging, I hated social media and thought it was a waste of time. I still do for personal use, however, for business, it can be awesome. Networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ have millions of visitors each day and these same people can be your potential audience. Start by setting up social profiles and following people relevant to your niche. Whenever you publish content, always share it with your followers to build momentum and credibility. The more valuable content you share, the greater potential of people following you, increasing overall engagement.

As time goes on, you’ll begin to notice something cool happen. You’ll start to generate enormous traffic through social networks because not only will your followers click-through to your blog, but when they “retweet” your content they’ll also have their relevant friends click-through, too. It’s a chain reaction that, once in motion, would be difficult to stop.

Make use of social networks from the start and keep sharing your content. For those of you who have a hard time keeping track of your social campaign, you can automate the process by installing cool plugins within blogging platforms.

Ability to Build an Email Following

Implement email forms right from the start and start split testing for optimal performance. Building a huge email list is great for return visitors and building brand awareness. It’s tough optimizing an opt-in form that converts well in the beginning. However, once you’ve mastered it, you’ve pretty much set yourself up for success in the long-run. Don’t forget to setup a solid follow up sequence and keep quality content flowing to your subscribers.

Here are a few tips to design the perfect landing page…

  • Keep page relevant to niche.
  • Don’t ask for too much information, only what’s required.
  • Don’t over use text on the page and keep it simple.
  • Use colors that are easy on the eyes.
  • Give away something of value so subscribers trust your content going forward.
