A Big Night Out In Vancouver

Big Night is a yearly event put on by Vancouver Magazine that celebrates the top winning wines from their 4th annual Wine Awards paired with the best restaurants from their 18th annual Restaurant Awards. This is the third year of the event and it brings out the who’s who of Vancouver to the very prestigious Vancouver Club for a night of wining, dining and rubbing elbows with the city’s movers and shakers.
Big Night answers the aged old question of what happens when new age Dot Com meets old age Vancouver money. The answer is: not a hell of lot. This maybe because we decided to dress like old money instead of the Dot Com stereotype. The Vancouver Club is a very old club (founded in 1889) with old traditions and a very strict dress code. While we dressed like old money, we acted like it was Dot Com Pho. We did get some strange looks when we grab some giant champagne glasses to make a toast.
Joining Sarah and me for Big Night were Greg Morgan and his girlfriend Linda, Stephen Fung and his girlfriend Kelly, and Ed Lau, who is single and was hoping to find a Vancouver Club sugar momma. He had a few bites but they were all too old.

The first photo looks like something you’d see from the “red carpet”. My fav. parts of the video: Campbells chunky beef soup and those HUGE glasses of wine – no wonder you were drunk!
I tried every wine there (I’m sure John did too…probably). Some I went back for a second…or third…glass so I’d say before that massive one, we’d probably had about 15-16…maybe more…glasses.
…but we also had like 10 glasses of water by the end of the night too.
Every wine? How did you handle the headache? LoL
The ice win saw a lot of action and repeat business that night
…oh and four or five shots of Grey Goose before we started.
Mmmmm grey goose.
Yeah it does. John’s on the A-list!
Actually…no…
As John strolled by the “Media Registration Desk” he realized that not only did he have to pay for this event, but he was not even invited as press, and basically a nobody at this event.
…also…Sarah made him wear a suit
And Stephen wouldn’t have known about the event at all if I hadn’t told him. And I look way better in a suit than he does.
Just before the event, you asked me if there was a dress code, and if you could wear a leather jacket, blue shirt, and khaki pants, looking like a line of ants
The prosecution rests
Check out the wine glasses, dude. And haha, you can just spot John from a mile away coz his head is like right above everyone else’s.
Was this a free invite party? Coz all the food looks very inviting.
Totally free…in exchange for $120 bucks.
John Chow, that is life I guess, I wish to see you with hot girls around
Let us show that too.. I’ve seen you poking girls, Las vegas and now Vancouver, lets have something dancing
and this Reverse funnel system AD , right now above , ooops..
Seems Like a nice night out John.
I was watching a live show, Phantom of the Opera last night (for a bit of a change) also was a very good night out
nice evening
Way to put the Dot Com Mogul spin on the old money scene. Love the giant wine glasses.
Dude…drinking two liters of champagne really gets you later.
You drank it? It’s only Ginger Ale Ed!
That is something john would have been surprise of.
Looks like you would of had a good night.
Nice one John!Hope your single friend finds someone real soon.
Nice first picture by the way.Agree with whoever said it looks more like a red carpet evening!!!
Looks like allot of fun. John what was your favorite wine? The video was wonderful. Thanks for sharing it. Looked like you enjoyed yourself very much
The place looks really nice
~Katie
Ed what was your favorite wine there? What one did you drink the most of? Sorry you didn’t feel well later. At least it was fun at the time right?
What foods did you like the most?
~Katie
Didn’t feel well? I felt great. It takes more than a few glasses to tank me.
I make mention of my favorite wine and foods on my Big Night post.

Sorry I thought you felt bad later on cause you wrote:
“Dude…drinking two liters of champagne really gets you later”.
What were you referring to when you said champagne really gets you later?
I’m glad you felt great
I will check out your post. Thanks for sharing it and nice meeting you!
~Katie
I wasn’t being serious…we didn’t actually drink out of those massive champagne glasses.
Chow look like CEO…
Handsome and rich guy….
I’m jealous …
This post make me hungry.. Nice big cup of wine
“This post make me hungry..”
You must have skipped out on grammar class.
(I doubt it was a typo, as I’ve noticed grammatical errors in most of your comments and/or posts)
It “make” (makes) you sound like a dumbass. Start correcting it.
You be douche bag.
Jack,
Stop pretending to be John Chow. John Chow would never leave a negative comment like this. He is friendly.
~Katie
That’s a huge champagne glass!
How much was the suit John?
looks like fun!
what’s the stuff on top of the ravioli?
Sorry John, but I have to say this in my language… “Que camión la de gris!”
Thanks!
That translates to “That gray truck the one!”
I don’t get it.
That`s a pretty small glass of champagne
Glamorous life you have John..
Shooting Vodka and oysters what could be better! Thanks for sharing your video.
Are you a big wine fan? What is a good fruity tasting, more sweet wine? I have to admit I’m not very educated in wine.
Fruity Tasting and sweet aren’t usually good signs for a regular wine, but if that is what you are looking for, try a dessert wine. They are sweeter and go great with a dessert, like Creme Brulee.
Something like a nice glass of Warre’s 10 -year Tawny Port
wow! the food looks delicious
looks yummy even a bum would love it!
Looks liek a fun event. I should move there.
Fantastic
The oyster bar looks cool… was it made of ice?
Yep, pure ice
Looks like great fun! I like how they call it “big night”. I remember that being a theme of a high school prom I attended.
Love those sort of events where you get a chance to try samplings from a bunch of different restaurants, with wine pairings. For those of us not going to the best restaurants for free
It is a good way to get a feel for what they have to offer.
Oh yeah totally crazy! Anyone could attend, !$120…
Not exactly special or anything.. I dont get it.
Looking quite snazzy John
-Mike
JOHN CHOW!!!! This video makes me miss you & parties & vegas & fine dining & drinking! It’s nice to see you dressed up! You looked really nice.
The huge glasses at the end were awesome! You made me laugh. They reminded me of the huge Absolut bottles we took pictures with. Looks like you had an awesome time. Wish I could have been there with you all!
You guys need to get the hell out of Pittsburgh!
It looks like you had a blast! Did you make any new connections?
You mentioned that you were the odd guy there- old money vs. dot com guys. How did you get the invite? Sounds like a great party.
He didn’t get invited at all. He paid like all the regular people. What made him most upset was when he walked by the “Media Registration” desk…and he wasn’t in it
Big party for you john.
Hi John,
I have finally revealed the secrets you keep emailing me about.
See the article my name links too, it is entitled “A big fight out”.
Thanks,
John Pow.
Looking quite dapper there, John. Easy on those vodka and oyster shots! LOL. Oh yeah, and those huge-ass glasses. Cheers!
Shine on,
Aaron
