A Very Shocking CES Experience

written by John Chow on January 10, 2007

How to make $593 in less than one hour

I love visiting the Taser booth at CES. My evil side gets so much joy when seeing someone get shocked by 50,000 volts of energy, even if it’s only for a quarter second. Enjoy the video.

That is crazy! Great footage though!

Didn’t want to give it a try yourself John? :)

John Chow January 10, 2007 at 4:52 pm

As I stated in the video, I’ve been Tasered before. Don’t need to get Tasered again. :)

Kiltak January 10, 2007 at 5:04 pm

Rofl, as Ed has already stated on his blog, your must surely be Satan’s manifestation on earth ;)

Ryan January 10, 2007 at 5:10 pm

John, what were they giving away to people that were tasered? I mean, who in their right mind says “Hey, I wanna get tasered.”?

Oh, and you should have used 12x zoom on his face.

Hannes Johnson January 10, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Man, that has got to hurt.

I just saw this video on YouTube – celebrities getting tasered:

Jon Daniel January 10, 2007 at 5:19 pm

So is that what you are going to do to us if we steal your Smirnoff Ice?

Great video John, all of us at the ThinkComputers hotel room were cracking up.

John Chow January 10, 2007 at 5:22 pm

Ryan – If you agree to get Tasered, they give you a Taser T Shirt. The first time I got Tasered, I didn’t even get that!

Nate W. January 10, 2007 at 6:03 pm

Wow that looks like it hurt. Why would anyone do that for a t-shirt? I would consider doing it if I could have a night out with the booth babe! Then it would be worth it!

My New Choice January 10, 2007 at 6:06 pm

Lol, I would consider getting tasered as I have seen so many videos of it and you wonder how much it really does hurt.

Hmm, tasered for a link in John’s Featured Sites list? I see a contest there. Lol.

Saman Sadeghi January 10, 2007 at 6:07 pm

The best part of that video was John laughing when the guy got tazered!

Doc January 10, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Speaking of shocking, did anyone catch the interesting message that showed up instead of this site earlier today? Haven’t seen anyone mention it, but I figure I can’t be the only one who saw it.

StrangeProgress January 10, 2007 at 6:25 pm

Ha ha, “I got freakin’ Tasered and all I got was this lousy T-shirt”!

Michael Kwan January 10, 2007 at 6:45 pm

I’m afraid to ask you, John, whether the first (and presumably only) time you got tasered was actually voluntary? :)

Ryan January 10, 2007 at 7:09 pm

I guess if people will pay $40 for parking they’ll have no problem being tasered for a t-shirt. The human race never ceases to amaze me.

Hawaii SEO January 10, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Looks like fun! Where do I get in line?

Aris January 10, 2007 at 7:10 pm

When I saw the video, I was wondering how much they’d get pay for that? A T-shirt only? Well, may be he can ask John for the royalty. :-)

Alex Becker January 10, 2007 at 7:13 pm

HaHa. I want to be tazed. I hear you can get heart palpitations after that. I want that.

Heywood January 10, 2007 at 7:43 pm

John, I like this new “evil John” personality you’re working on! Tasers, grabbing asses…wow!

Cameron Wilmot January 10, 2007 at 7:56 pm

Moto didn’t have the balls to do again but then again, I wouldn’t have been that keen to give it a try….

Tony January 10, 2007 at 8:11 pm

50,000 volts are not that much… Amps are where the killer power is.

Andy January 10, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Wow – that must hurt

J.R. January 10, 2007 at 8:37 pm

I heard your site just got hacked by the Turkish Hacker. That must have been a shocking experience!

Max January 10, 2007 at 8:45 pm

The best part of the video is John laughing in the background.

Cameron Wilmot January 10, 2007 at 9:07 pm

How does it compare to touching an electic fence? I believe they are around 10 – 20k volts and give a nice little zap.

Raghu January 10, 2007 at 10:46 pm

Interesting video. I had never heard this term ‘taser’ before – pardon my ignorance, but people do THIS for fun ?

Nomar January 10, 2007 at 11:43 pm

great movie :D

Ed Lau January 10, 2007 at 11:53 pm

Yep, I’ve been tasered before too. One of my buddies has one…those things hurt. We used to build them back in high school with reloadable battery magazines.

I would’ve asked that chick on the side to hold me instead.

John Chow January 11, 2007 at 12:28 am

Raghu – A Taser is used by the police to take down bad guys without killing them. A full 5 second burst would render the meanest baddie into a crying baby.

Cam – Touching an eclectic fence is nothing compared to getting tasered!

Max – I can’t help it. Seeing the guy scream in pain was just funny. LOL

Opa bato January 11, 2007 at 1:52 am

Hey that was never a quarter of a second. You can hear it going on for at least 2 seconds.

Jeff January 11, 2007 at 3:05 am

Yeah that’s almost as long as a regular taser… I guess the guy who’s doing it has a sadistic side.

HMTKSteve January 11, 2007 at 5:12 am

There is one thing I do not understand.

The TASER is an electric charge right? When I was a kid we had this “trick” we used to play on people where you would grab someone by the wrist and then grab onto the “cow fence” to give them a good zap. The current would pass through you harmlessly and ground out on them causing pain.

How come the two guys holding the big guy are not affected by the TASER?

Leftblank January 11, 2007 at 6:09 am

HMTKSteve, it looks like they’re wired or something, perhaps even grounded, in addition to that they’re holding him by his cloths which would increase the resistance of them.

I wonder why people would like to get tased, I doubt the pain will be gone suddenly as it’s causing a lot of muscles to move unnaturally.

Nick Witkoski January 11, 2007 at 6:19 am

is it true that when you get tasered that you can lose control of your bowels?

ChrisB January 11, 2007 at 6:23 am

I lose control of my bowels with no taser involved.

Is….that a problem…you think?? :\

anon January 11, 2007 at 6:31 am

making vids so people have to go back to your website? interesting strat to boost rev.

Ryan January 11, 2007 at 6:47 am

Nick, if John would have used 12x zoom maybe we would have seen some lost bowels… doh

Stew January 11, 2007 at 7:17 am

I’d volunteer to get tasered for some free loot :D

Plus I’m curious how I’d handle it

Matthew Berman January 11, 2007 at 1:02 pm

uh oh…better not get near those guys

feverinlove January 12, 2007 at 3:13 am

I have never been tasered :) but I believe taser hurts the area its in contact with.

HMTKSteve January 12, 2007 at 9:46 am

I couldn’t see any special grounding gear on the guys holding the target :)

Teresa January 12, 2007 at 3:05 pm

You totally should have done it again, Moto! Watching you get tasered a few years ago was too damn funny. I remember laughing so hard with Charity that I dropped my camera and didn’t get a picture of it. I was hoping to see video footage of you doing it this year. Too much fun!!

David Mackey January 12, 2007 at 5:18 pm

Mmmm…I was expecting something to be visible through the air. Could have been faking it if I didn’t know you’d taped it.

Jane January 14, 2007 at 11:58 am

This reminds me of that kid at UCLA that was stunned by campus police like 5 times for not wanting to leave the campus library…he forgot his ID….ooops

Michael Kwan January 15, 2007 at 5:55 pm

I’m *thankful* you didn’t use the 12x zoom to see some uncontrolled bowels.
