Advanced Email Marketing for Bloggers – How To Geo-Target Your List

This is part two of my series on Advanced Email Marketing for Bloggers. This time I’m going to show you how to geo-target your email list. The ability to geo-target is one of the most powerful features of Aweber.

Many affiliate offers are geographically limited to certain countries or regions. It would be huge waste of resources and bad form to email offers to readers that can’t use them because they don’t live in the country where the offer is available. By geo-targeting your list, you can make sure that only readers in the countries where the offers is available receives the offer. Readers outside the geo-target won’t receive the mailing. This increases conversions and reduces unsubscribes.

Another use of list geo-targeting is for holiday emails. During Thanksgiving, I received a ton of “Happy Thanksgiving!” emails. Only problem was, I live in Canada and Thanksgiving happens in October, not November. By geo-targeting your email, you can ensure that your holiday emails goes out to the right group at the right time. Here’s how to do it.

Segment Your List By Countries

Log into your Aweber account and choose “Search” from the “Subscribers” tab. From there, you’ll see a long list of options to choose from. The one you’re looking for is Country (from IP). If you really want to dig deep, you can segment by region, city, postal code, latitude, longitude, etc. For this example, we’re just going to create a list of US subscribers.

Depending on how big your list is, the search can take anywhere from a second to a few minutes to generate. Give the new segmented list a name and save it. Now you can email the segmented list with your geo-targeted offer.

Try Aweber for Only $1.00

If your blog doesn’t have an email list, you are leaving a ton of money on the table. My mailing list is the number one reason my blog makes income that it does. Aweber is the best email service I have ever used. Their feature set is beyond anything else in the industry and the geo-targeting tool is another reason they’re the best.

Aweber offers a $1 trial account for all new customers. The account is just like a normal Aweber account and includes unlimited email campaigns, newsletter, broadcasts and follow ups. It’s a great way to test drive Aweber to see what it can do for your blog. Your satisfaction is guaranteed. If you find that having an email list is not for you, contact Aweber within 30 days and they’ll give you the $1 back.

  1. Hi John,

I have learnt a lot of things about email marketing in the past few months and how to make money with them mostly from your blog. I am gonna start my email marketing campaigns from March and I hope that it will bring me good results. I will follow these tutorials when I start using aweber. Anyway, thanks for the useful tutorial.

    1. Hey John,

This post is gold. I didn’t know about being able to do such focused targeting on AWeber.

I do use AWeber but haven’t explored everything it can do. Thanks to you pointing out the less known and used features I’ll be able to take full advantage of it.

They say that ignorance is bliss which I think in some cases it is but when it comes to email marketing and AWeber ignorance means loss.

      1. Lol, yeh, it’s not good to be ignorant at all when it comes to making money online or marketing online. For how long have you been using aweber? For someone teaching about building an email list you would think that he atleast knows how the email list building tool works. 😛
Or are you just teaching on how to get the subscribers in the first place?

        //Alexander.

        1. I don’t write about email marketing which is something that will happen in the future.

I write about list building. AWeber is a tool that Aweber themselves know the most about.

I don’t claim to know everything. Nobody does. Do you do everything right and do you know everything when it comes to making money online?

I doubt that very much. And yet you write about it.

I was also surprised, when i saw this post. I will try it in aweber.

    2. I must say that this kind of post is really gem.

      Thanks John.

      1. I agree ZK,

It’s a post that gives you something concrete which you can use.

      2. yea you can try it asap and see all improvements in your mail campaigns

  2. Good tip John! I bet a lot of people who use aweber don’t use this or know about it. I just learned about it from you 🙂

    1. Hi Dan,

You are right about many people not using this feature. I’ve been one of them and I’m sure that there are legions of others.

    2. yes maximum people do not fully utilise the all resource.

Simply watch maximum tutorials and you will be to maximise the use of it.

    3. now go and apply it to your business and its win

    1. Abhik says:

after looking at the segmentation system, i found that aweber can track subscriber to the street level for US.

      1. this will be really useful if you are doing local seo.

  3. fas says:

I tell you something, I never knew Aweber has this feature.

    1. Neon SRT4 says:

It really works well. I knew, awebere has this feature.

    2. PPC Ian says:

Same here! I’ve been using AWeber for 1.5 years and had no idea about this geo targeting feature. Really great stuff!

      1. Hi Ian,

Isn’t it great that we can learn this right now instead of being in the dark for another year or two? It makes me feel better to know that I’m not alone in not having used the close targeting feature yet.

        1. PPC Ian says:

Yeah! Totally! I spend so much time on my day-to-day job of paid search that I have very little time left to dig into the details of AWeber. At this point, I’m kind of just passively collecting email leads and doing a message once in while. Because of these great tips from John, I’m definitely picking up some AWeber tips that I would have never had time to investigate.

          1. I think that it is very common that most people for whatever reason whether it’s a lack of time or rushing ahead or thinking that they can figure things out gradually by themselves do not read all the instructions for whatever tool.

I highly admire the people who are the exception to this.

      2. Abhik says:

It is actually not geo targeting..
It’s the filtering option at Aweber.

    3. maximum people use awebar to send emails, to send updates about their blog and new post.

This kind of features are new and can blow anyone’s mind.

      1. These features are probably reasonably new because so many people have not been using them.

  4. Mike T. says:

I think one of the things that most marketers say is that they wish they had started their list earlier. Aweber has been a godsend for most marketers because of it’s low price point and easy of use. If you guys aren’t using it already I would suggest trying out the almost free $1 trial for a month to play around with it.

It’s amazing what features you can discover. I never knew about this geotargeting feature before reading John’s article.

    1. this kind of service known to those people who invest their time in tutorials.

  5. Abhik says:

    Thanks John..
    Nice idea indeed.

  6. Great tip, now all I have to do is grow the list, thanks for the info.

    1. yes grow the list with the country which you wanted to target.

Now everything in your hand so enjoy the power.

  7. Gregg Zban says:

    Hi John,

I use Aweber and they have been reliable. I have never used anything else but I contact is looking interesting. It would be good to see a side by side comparison.

  8. PPC Ian says:

Wow! I had no idea AWeber had this functionality! I’ll definitely try this out for future emails. Email marketing is now offering really great targeting capability, just like PPC!

    1. Abhik says:

Well, emails work better than PPCs 🙂

      1. PPC Ian is an expert on PPC so I think that he may not quite agree with you on this Abhik.

There is a place for everything. One thing may work for you better and another thing for the other guy. PPC tends to give more immediate results I’d think.

  9. Karen Marrow says:

    John,

Wow, I had no idea you could do this.

    Thanks for sharing!!!

    Karen

    1. Abhik says:

Just play around the Search Subscribers section and you’ll learn a lot more.

      1. That’s a good advice Abhik. I’m going to do just that.

  10. Wow I didn’t know aweber had this feature, it makes everything a lot easier. I used to use an email list tool where you could sort out geo-targeting, but then the subscriber had to enter his country by himself. This makes me want aweber even more now, bit I will wait some months more before I get it. =)

    //Alexander.

    1. Abhik says:

You aren’t using email responders? Man, you are leaving money on the table :p

      1. No point of using email responders when I am not recieving much traffic yet. My site has only been up for a little more than a month and I’m just starting to get about 40 visitors per day. Still in the process of moving it to hostgator as well. But in a few months I think I will be ready for aweber. =)

It’s all about planning. If you do it too fast you will lose money, if you do it too late you will lose money.

        //Alexander.

  11. Hampton says:

Getting thousands targeted list seems easier using this email marketing..
    Thanks John

    Yasagun,

    1. Abhik says:

That is actually a hard thing to get.. I mean thousands of targeted lists :p

  12. Hotdogman says:

You know, John makes money online by telling people how to make money online. Often imitated, never duplicated- ABC- Always Be Closing.

  13. Clay Burt says:

What was even more interesting to me was the level of detail you can get to and focus in on… Lat/Long, Postal Code, etc!
    Wow!

    1. ye its really precise how can u describe it

  14. Very nice post John

Im not into email marketing but after reading your last two posts of email marketing, Im thinking of start doing it as well

I will surely thing about it

  15. Great advice! I’ve been thinking about how to better target American toy fans!

  16. I need to check my GetResponse account and see if I can do ip targeting of subscribers.

    1. Please do that and let us know here. I’ve always been told that GetResponse can do everything that AWeber can. If it can’t do this it would be a major advantage for AWeber.

  17. ibnujusup says:

will try this feature… but money came to issue now… gotta save some money then… 🙂
thanks for the advice… it seems like the geo targetting features in google webmaster..:-)

  18. Neon SRT4 says:

I will try this feature. I need to check this and if it works, i will be very thankful to you.

  19. That is good feature for Bloggers. To say about me, it is better for my business. Because i randomly promote different country products. That will finally get me low clients, because i do send to everyone. Is this feature available in aweber?

  20. Email marketing has to be the next big fad now becuase everyone’s who launches a new product is focusing towards this method.

  21. anitha says:

Thanks for the tips its really nice which help to concentrate around GEO

  22. aye now people with small and targeted list can promote some products more effectively

  23. singer divya says:

thanks mate, it will be helpful for me to update./
