Apple Macbook Air Bootup Test

Just how fast is the SSD memory in the new Apple Macbook Air? To find out, I did a little boot up test. With the laptop completely shut off, I timed how long it took from the time you hit the power button to the time it took to get into the Mac OSX.

The bottom line. The new Apple Macbook Air can bootup faster than most laptops can shut down.

I’m really enjoying this new Macbook. I might even pick up an 11.6″ just for the hell of it. The 11.6″ Air cost only $999. if I don’t like it, I can always give it away in a contest.

You get what you pay for. Apple has always been up there when it comes to quality products.

    1. yes apple product is simply great and this kind of quality makes them superior to pc.

      1. d3so says:

        They’re pc’s also 😉

        1. That is true but PC usually means Windows operating system

  2. Dan Lew says:

Apple has always been quicker then PC on start up! 13.2 is extremely quick though I will have to time how long it takes to boot up my other mac mini as apposed to my Asus i5! Still love Asus more though 🙂

    1. so what are the reaons because of which you like asus.

    2. d3so says:

One reason why i like macs are because of their quick boot time.

      1. Do you use a Mac now? I thought you had a Windows PC.

        Maybe you have both now.

  3. Ayden says:

I’ve got a Macbook Air coming on Monday. Can’t wait.

    1. congratulation.

So you are old user of mac or this one is your first one.

    2. d3so says:

      I’m jealous lol.
      Hope you enjoy it!

  4. Dan Lew says:

I am a big believer in having mac and pc, so you can split test and troubleshoot things easier

    1. yes you should have all options and tools so that work can run smoothly.

      1. Having both is an ideal situation to be in. If you need them both.

  5. Keith says:

That was dam fast! But don’t you find the longer you have a computer (and all the extras that we add on) the time goes from 13.2 –> 4 minute mile?

What the heck am I doing up so late, it is 2 AM here. Goodnight! Stop giving me content to comment on!

    1. John Chow says:

That only Happens to PCs. My two year old Macbook Pro still boots as fast as the day I got it. 🙂

    2. Harshad says:

That can happen if you have thousands of programs loading at start up. … but comparatively, a Mac would always boot much faster.

      1. booting is different thing because i think programs which you have do not effect your booting.

As far as i know 😉

        1. Harshad says:

There are programs which automatically start when you boot your computer. Having such programs at start up can slow down the boot process.

          1. d3so says:

That’s why I don’t like autostart programs. I try to minimize those as much as possible.

  6. Hi John,

    thanks for the video.
Really fantastic how fast this MacBook is!

Is there a possibility to get a MacBook Air with an antiglare display?

    Greetings from Germany
    Gordon

    1. John Chow says:

No there isn’t. But the Macbook Air doesn’t have a glass in front of the screen so it’s not as glossy as the Macbook Pro.

      1. boy they certainly believe’in keep inventing.

        1. d3so says:

The glass would probably add some significant weight to it.

          1. Without the glass I imagine that the screen is easily scratched and damaged.

  7. Iman says:

:)) That was fast! Can you please do the same test after 6 months to see how it functions after a while

    1. John Chow says:

With the Mac OS, and assuming I don’t add any new programs, the boot up time should be the same in six months as it is today.

      1. yes as john mentioned in earlier comments that his macbook pro booting is same as it was earlier.

      2. d3so says:

That wasn’t the case with my old white MacBook.

        1. The Mac also shuts off much faster than a PC.

  8. That is mighty fast, SSDs are the way to go and hopefully will reach reach decent price and storage ratio to become a mainstay in the industry.

Btw how many hours of work are you able to squeeze out of the battery of your new MacBook Air?

    1. John Chow says:

I can get over 7 hours if I’m doing light stuff like email, IM and surfing the net. It will go down if you start stressing it with harder stuff like video editting.

      1. 7 hours are good enough for blogger like us.

        1. d3so says:

Wow that’s a long time. My laptop doesn’t even last 7 hours.

  9. Blogging says:

    My PC startup 3min 🙂

    1. in one year you almost lost your one full working day.

Think about it or get a mac.

      1. d3so says:

That’s an interesting way to put it.

        1. Yes, saving time is even more important than saving money.

  10. Mathew Day says:

You’re right John, that bootup time for the Macbook Air is “pretty dam fast”. I definitely want one, can always write it off at the end of the year. 😉

    1. boy that one is interesting practice.

That means you always have latest and update technology.

  11. fas says:

I can c a mac mini in the background, or is it a time capsule?

    1. John Chow says:

      That’s a time capsule.

  12. BUJ54 says:

Nice review of the new mac laptop. But why not just go with the ipad and use a dock or wireless keyboard?
Also, anyone heard about these passing through airport security?

    1. John Chow says:

I have an iPad. They are are used for different purposes. The iPad can’t process photos or videos. The Air can. However, the 13″ Air won’t fit in my Scottyvest. The iPad can.

      1. all gadgets have their own purpose and work.

So to’operate our blogging business smoothly we do need this kind of gadgets and technology.

  13. I’ve always loved macs. I’ve been waiting for this new air to come out for a while and I’m so excited it’s finally available. I’m going to pick one up on Monday :). The SSD is excellent I just upgraded my Macbook Pro to a SSD and man does it make a difference!

    1. yes for our business we do need fast and reliable technology so that our task can be fast and save our precious time.

  14. It’s amazing how fast it is at booting up. I remember my Lenovo computer with windows vista which took 4 minutes to get started… I wonder if computers will boot up in a second in the future. 🙂

    1. Abhik says:

      4 minutes!!?
Man, get rid of windows vista.

  15. like your name. Perfect for this post.

New technology is developing and i am sure pc will have same booting time as well.

  16. boy you will help apple to get many buyers through this post.

    1. Abhik says:

Too bad there ain’t any affiliated links 😉

  17. Abhik says:

    13.2 seconds.. OMG!!
My Intel c2d takes about 75 seconds to boot up using Windows 7.

  18. Jason says:

It took 45 seconds for my PC to boot up and it has a solid state hard drive also. I think that the reason PC’s take longer is because of the POST test when starting up and you get the Boot screen that allows you to enter the BIOS. If they eliminated those, then the boot up times would be comparable. The specs of it are:

    Intel Core i7 950 @ 3.06Ghz
    8 GB Gskill DDR3 memory
    Asus Rampage III motherboard
Asus Geforce GTX 460 1GB DDR5 video card
    Windows 7 pro 64-bit

I also have this with dual monitors! One is a 24in Asus and the other is a 22in Acer.

It does everything that I need! I was using Photoshop CS5 the other day and is was using over 6GB of memory and it works like a beast.

  19. Gino Orlandi says:

I love Apple’s products. I would love this laptop, but I got my eyes fixed on a new 27inch iMac and don’t go out often so I really don’t need a laptop.

  20. MacBook is amazing product. I just love it! Much superior than PC. Thanks for sharing this post.
