Apple May Suck But They Have Cool Ads

written by John Chow on November 22, 2007

Apple has taken their “I’m a Mac and I’m a PC” TV commercial online with a new campaign that combines the fun of the original TV ads with a creative use of site ad space. Instead of simply using a video ad, the campaign utilizes a right hand box and a top leaderboard ad with both characters appearing to look at the message the Leaderboard is displaying.

The campaign has been spotted on sites including Engadget, PCMag and News.com. On the News.com site, the ad was displayed on a page reviewing Windows Vista. That’s getting pretty evil. I wonder what the CPM is on an ad like that? While Apple computers still sucks, I have to admit their ads are pretty damn cool.

John, I was just Mashing up your feed on Yahoo pipes to display on my blog and as I refreshed it, Saw this post new coming up! Came in immediately to comment. I will see the video later…Comment first!

So guys do you make haste to comment on Johns blog early!?

Mike November 22, 2007 at 7:18 pm

all the time dude! haha

Graham Lutz, The Young Capitalist November 26, 2007 at 5:24 pm

I generally find myself up top. That’s one of the benefits of working at home, you don’t have to worry about the ol’ bossy boss.

BTW, John, how did you create such a vibrant commenting community? You’ve probably written a post or two about it, but when you have 3 trillion posts, it’s hard to get to all of them!

Vikram November 22, 2007 at 5:18 pm

Now that I have seen the Ads, I am laughing my ass off!
Can you believe the Top and Right Ad spot could be used so very well in conjunction?
Also Its displayed on a page where Dell is advertising it s “new” PC.

Hilarious!

Michael @ tech November 22, 2007 at 11:32 pm

Another hilarious but unfair thing that Apple it was at the imac conference. They displayed a Dell with a zillion wires coming out and then an imac with 2 wires.

Vikram November 23, 2007 at 2:07 am

Yeah! thats right too! i missed it the first time I saw it! Lolz!

SEO Optimization November 23, 2007 at 9:57 am

Indeed the ad is hilarious and very creative. A pitty mac is not as their ads

fsgsbsfgb November 23, 2007 at 1:46 pm

You kidding mac is soo much better then pc. :!:

Spirytus November 23, 2007 at 5:11 pm

IMO mac is complete Rubbish, even when you compare software that suppose be so easy to use on mac its way behind, flash is one example. anyway windows is far from perfect but mac is waaaaay further . and those commercials sucks also, to me are very annoying as mac pretends to be cool, pathetic. had nothing against mac before as I had not much experience using it, however after spending with it few months with I gave up, just could do better work on my pc

Skiing at Home November 24, 2007 at 6:26 pm

I converted over to the “dark side” (Mac) last fall. I run a program called Pro Tools for recording audio and it WILL not work on Windows without spending 3 days tweaking it. I know because I ran it on a Dell and had errors after errors, I even bought a new 1505 and it never ran at all. The day I left the Apple store I was recording that evening. My brother is a gamer and hates apple, to each his own.

Karol Krizka November 23, 2007 at 9:33 pm

There is another clip on youtube with the ad right beside CNet’s review of Vista.

Neil Duckett November 22, 2007 at 5:39 pm

I don`t own an Apple, yet, but being an ex unix user and having a buddy who is newly converted to Apple it`s only a matter of time for me.

Israel November 22, 2007 at 7:52 pm

i have a buddy who swears by his mac, yet he got a virus the first month he owned it. i’ve been a pc guy for life. while i liek macs and like the prettiness of them, im so used to my pc.

InvestorBlogger November 22, 2007 at 8:23 pm

I haven’t had a virus on my PC for so long, its weird. Viruses just aren’t the problem they used to be… With email being scanned by all the biggies, and virus software on the pc, I rarely run it at all. More useful as a sentry.

Innovations & interesting Ramblings November 22, 2007 at 8:35 pm

lemme know if you need a virus…. lol..

@John…and apple users always swear by its products…contrasting opinions…

Home Recording November 23, 2007 at 2:56 am

Friend? My son is a Mac fanatic and simply can not understand how I stay loyal to my PC with Windows to boot. We are a divided family thanks to these turf wars.

Chris Jacobson November 22, 2007 at 9:17 pm

I’m thinking of getting the new iMac after Christmas. I’ll still use Vista as my daily machine though.

Fahmishah November 22, 2007 at 5:40 pm

Haha.. very funny one but I still want to get it

Vik Dulat November 22, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Apple laptops are a lot more stable than Windows. My Windows desktop is all messed up! Either way, Apple ads rule!

Mike November 22, 2007 at 5:51 pm

I dont know why people get all passionate about having or not having an apple… yes they are nice computers but you have to be a loser if you base your life on owning or not owning one! suck on that people! im just joshin… kind of…

Mike November 22, 2007 at 5:58 pm

Yeah that was a pretty funny vid. John you are right, apple commercials are the best!

Bruce November 22, 2007 at 6:04 pm

I actually love all these ads. They show some interesting use of marketing with the pitting us against them type mentality. Of course I don’t believe all PC users are stuff as the ads would have to believe. I’m a little of a rebel and never have used a MAC other than to fix one at work from time to time.

James Pegram November 22, 2007 at 6:34 pm

My MacBook Pro will run Windows XP or Vista better than any PC you can buy. I’ll say this too, I was as anti Apple as they came but finally got tired of dealing with all the Windows b.s. Bought the Mac and after a couple of weeks deprogramming my Windows handicapped brain I love the thing. Things just work like you think they should, not how Microsoft thinks they should. I realize the bias against them, but every since switching to the Intel platform it’s a serious contender. I’ve only found one application that I use on a daily basis that doesn’t run on it natively and that’s SqlYog. Zend runs better on the Mac than it ever did on any PC I’ve had and Photoshop.. No comparison there either. I wanted a Linux machine with a solid desktop interface and that’s what the MAC O/S is now. Before you know it try one for a month. I’ll guarantee you’ll change your mind.

Will November 22, 2007 at 6:48 pm

I use a vista and have had zero problems with it so far. I really don’t understand all the negativity towards it.

If Cavemen can become a sitcom, Mac and PC should be.

Israel November 22, 2007 at 7:54 pm

hahah, so true. i think the show was canned.

brian November 22, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Saw that on the front page of Digg yesterday. Very innovative on apple’s part. Plus apple rocks.

Affiliate Unleashed November 22, 2007 at 7:27 pm

Hahahahaha. Man that ad is evil! It’s veryyyyyy brilliant how they interlinked the ads like that.

Thanks for posting that.

Derek Baker November 22, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Great work with the advertising by Apple. They are a smart company and always ahead of the game. I think people will actually watch that commercial.

blackyard.net November 22, 2007 at 8:00 pm

Yeah they will defintely watch the ad but will they go out and buy the Ma? I doubt…

blackyard.net November 22, 2007 at 8:05 pm

I mean Mac. silly me..lol

Bedroom Furniture November 22, 2007 at 8:01 pm

 for the ad, as for the computer, i have never used one so i don’t know if it sucks or blows or rocks or whatever.

Thomas Sinfield November 22, 2007 at 8:10 pm

I love apple ads….

Dandruff November 22, 2007 at 8:15 pm

Good one. Really nice and funny

Iantrepreneur November 22, 2007 at 8:15 pm

haha I love both machines – I have Mac ibook and a pc – I kinda have 4 computers all together – each with its own section of the house and prupose! – but mac commercials are uber cool

InvestorBlogger November 22, 2007 at 8:19 pm

Reality is: few of us will ever use the Mac or PC we have on our desk to its fullest potential! I’m planning to use both in the near future… and I would also like to have a Linux box, too.

A potential threesome… cool…!

Affiliate Confession November 22, 2007 at 8:38 pm

Oh please, a Mac is a tool just like a PC is. The Apple / PC battle is nonsense…but the ad is cool.

Mike Huang November 22, 2007 at 8:54 pm

I LOVE these Apple vs PC commercials. There is like a new one every 1-2 months!

-Mike

great008 November 22, 2007 at 8:55 pm

PC for life dude. I may switch to Mac for some stuff though. But as far as my desktop goes, yea PC. I mean maybe a Mac for laptop though (running Windows of course). I do have to admit that Macs are pretty though

The computer class at the closest local high school is all macintosh, the one down the street is all IBM, a third local highschool is all amd. I should know, I set up the fiber optic networks for them. At least the school board isn’t biased :)

Ruan November 22, 2007 at 9:51 pm

well, I like mac

I want to try a mac some day.

ps: I use WinXP

Mac are the King of Ads Marketing…they are so creative when it comes to marketing their products. And that’s all they are good at.
I have a Mac at the office and any time you want to customise something, it break.

Vista user here, though I prefer XP…

george November 23, 2007 at 12:48 am

John Chow evil as ever. I believe you are just trying to ignite the old Mac vs PC discussion to get a lot of comments, aren’t you? ;-D

By the way: I know a real “Mac” who sucks. But she’s no computer. *g*

thomas November 23, 2007 at 12:52 am

Interresting John – I don’t like Apple either, because of how they conduct bussiness and many of their users. Care to elaborate why you don’t? Personally I am a linux guy, and it seems privoxy is blocking your site John – had to manually override it for it to let me in here, hehe..

I don’t think that happened with the old design, now privoxy things your site is ham. Pwnd!

Joeychgo November 23, 2007 at 1:55 am

I love the apple commercials! I just dont like the products.

Dom November 23, 2007 at 2:41 am

“While Apple computers still sucks, I have to admit their ads are pretty damn cool.”

Wow. What an insightful and informed comment.

Rich Sage November 23, 2007 at 2:41 am

Creativity is alive and well… Great ads. We’ve got a lot to learn from this campaign.

ozZie November 23, 2007 at 2:48 am

Do you have any sort of justification whatsoever for your “Apple computers suck”-statement? Otherwise it is a rather douche comment.

Home Recording November 23, 2007 at 2:53 am

Everything is fair in love and war and now a days business competition! You are breaking a lot of hearts with that headline! The ads are very creative and effective. Quite whether it will translate into sales is to be seen.

Mubin November 23, 2007 at 3:46 am

When I first saw the ad on techcrunch I just thought it was just the ad on the right hand side and never even noticed the leader board. Thanks for pointing this out to me John as the ad has just started making sense.

Its not even the ad that counts its the fact that they have got people talking about it though. Think about it all the viral mileage they will get through this. Your blog post being a prime example, I believe techcrunch have also blogged about the ad, and it has hit the digg front page as well.

I like their ads….it’s all about the PR, people think Apple products were made by God himself.

Make Money Online November 23, 2007 at 5:43 am

It’s not Apple computers that I hate but more Apple users. In general a bunch of stuck up, arrogant (wow my Apple is ace) toss pots in my opinion.
On a related thread my daughter was forced to use Apple technology whilst at primary school, she’s just started secondary school and switched over to Windows based machines. She prefers Windows, she’ not much of a techy so that surprised me a lot.

Nat November 27, 2007 at 9:47 am

Much like Windows users are a bunch of knuckle-dragging, too-stupid-to-know-better losers.

I’m kidding of course. There are plenty of Apple users who are arrogant and think they’re superior but there are far more who simply use Macs because they like them better or they’re a better tool for what they need to do.

I use my Macs for most things because I find there’s a lot less maintenance involved than with Windows, and I prefer the way they work. I use my Windows system for the things I can’t run on my Mac.

Painting all of us with the same brush is no better than the Apple fanboys you’re calling out.

Michael November 23, 2007 at 5:47 am

Even though I respect Apple for it’s extremely solid products, with very high build-quality, but after that I really dislike the company. Their ads always seem to be putting somebody else down, instead of claiming how good their own products are.

Not to my liking at all.

PS: John Chow, I think macs suck too :D

Ivy November 23, 2007 at 6:55 am

I think Mac rocks. And I am a long time PC user until I converted. Macs are a lot more stable than PC, especially during downloads. There are different advantages of working with both, and now that the new iMac offers both, I have the best of both worlds!

Cody November 23, 2007 at 7:01 am

So John, I’m curious…what’s your reasoning for saying Apple sucks? How many Macs have you owned?

Britt Malka November 23, 2007 at 7:24 am

I know you have a lot of PC’s, but I thought it was due to pure ignorance. Now I know it is  Only people, who have never enjoyed a Mac, would say rubbish as “they suck”.

Even Joel Comm has admitted that Windows is crap (http://www.joelcomm.com/windows_is_crap.html) and he’s changed his PC with a computer, an iMac.

I must admit that I don’t have the time to use a PC – getting stuck with problems all the time, not being able to have 15-20 programmes open etc.

Life is too short for Windoze

Make Money Schemes November 24, 2007 at 1:17 am

What do you mean even Joel Comm? Joel is a marketer not an authority on operating systems!

bloggernoob November 23, 2007 at 7:45 am

i use both mac and pcs. its all marketing. folks at apple are marketing elites. for the price of the base mac, you can buy a top of the line pc. course the rich and trendy rather overpay. thats part of the appeal.

Mac-Sage.com November 23, 2007 at 8:04 am

I work in a mixed Mac/PC/*nix environment at a university. I have extensive experience in using and supporting all of these platforms. If the Linux had a slightly better interface package (it’s almost there), I’d have Linux on my desktop and laptop. But right now, it’s Leopard (UNIX). Windows (any flavor) would be my dead least choice.

Sam November 23, 2007 at 9:00 am

Yeah Macs still suck…
I guess you have to say that since you sell those ghetto PC’s on your tech sites.

Money Blue Book November 23, 2007 at 9:02 am

Apple products look great but are geared towards newbies and those who prefer style over substance. How can you seriously function with just one mouse button…I don’t get it

Cody November 23, 2007 at 2:25 pm

Macs haven’t shipped with a one-button mouse in years dude…

Karol Krizka November 23, 2007 at 9:45 pm

That’s right, their latest mighty mouse has around 4 buttons + 360 deg scroll wheel.

Aha! I just found one of these ads. That’s so impressive. I bet the CPM on it is very expensive.

Cody November 23, 2007 at 2:28 pm

But I’m sure the branding is what they’re going for on their ads anyway…it definitely leaves an impression, especially when someone is reading an article on the latest Dell and gets slammed with it

MoneyNing November 23, 2007 at 4:02 pm

I love Apple! Their creativity and branding is truly amazing.

I got a PC as my daily desktop and a Macbook when I am on the move. For a tech-savvy person, moving to Mac OS X is not as hard as I expected. If you are stuck, there’s always Google.

Switcher November 24, 2007 at 5:46 am

Well, it’s been exactly one year since I made the switch from PC to Mac… Over the course of this year, I’ve had nothing but great experiences with this thing.

* It works. All the time.
* After learning my way around, I really love the OS.
* I’ve never had a problem with viruses, spyware, etc.
* Installing and uninstalling programs is a snap.
* Apple customer support is excellent.

Sure, there was a short period of time at the beginning where it was a bit frustrating (keyboard shortcuts, getting acquainted with Mac software, etc.), but I really enjoy using my computer now and I’m much more productive on this machine than I ever was on my Windows system.

Hope this helps.

Start Blogging November 24, 2007 at 8:59 pm

If you’ve never had any problems, why do you have experience with Apple’s customer support?

KNau November 24, 2007 at 7:41 am

Ah, nothing ensures a rush of comments like Apple vs. PC linkbait. Hats off to John!

Both OSs are overbloated with touchy-feely fluff that has bugger all to do with getting things done. I don’t want to “experience” my operating system – I want it to stay the hell out of my way while I run real software. I long for the days of my Amiga when the OS fit on a floppy disk and did everything I needed, and nothing I didn’t.

Terrence November 24, 2007 at 11:01 am

Even though I like the ads, as a self-described tech geek I have to admit that Apple sometimes seriously misrepresents the situation. Like the commercial about Vista Upgrade. They made it seem like in comparison to Vista, Macs were easy to upgrade to a brand new OS. I’ve known plenty of people who would tell you this wasn’t true.

Money Blue Book November 24, 2007 at 4:08 pm
