Blog Income Report - April 2008
written by John Chow
It’s the first day of the month and that means it’s time once again for the world famous (OK, maybe just Internet famous) John Chow dot Com blog income report. In last month’s record breaking income post, I ended the report with this comment:
If I were to believe all those “I’m going to unsubscribe from your blog because you Rick Rolled me!” comments, this blog is going to hit a record low for April. I guess we’ll find out next month.
Next month is here and guess what? I do have a record low! Well, it’s a record low for this year anyway.
Total Blog Income for April 2008: $29,569.05
Making $29,569.05 for the month of April is lowest this blog has made all year. Blog revenue went down $1,872.19 from the previous record month. Here’s the income breakdown.
- Private Ad Sales: $14,380.00
- Affiliate Commissions: $8,257.55
- ReviewMe: $3,750.00
- Text Link Ads: $1,745.79
- Kontera: $1,000.00
- TTZ Media: $398.50
- FeedBurner: $17.21
- Subscription: $20.00
- Grand Total: $29,569.05
So far this year, the blog is averaging $30,317.42 per month so April is kind of a disappointment. However it was not unexpected. Advertising generally slows down as we enter the summer months. Nearly all my income sources went down with the exception of affiliate commissions and TTZ Media. I’m pretty sure I’ll be removing FeedBurner from the revenue mix. This blog has over 24,000 RSS subscribers and FeedBurner was only able to make $17.21 from it?
Traffic to the blog held steady at 289,736 page views from 153,127 visitors. Blog expenses for the month were $485.52 for contextual advertising on Google AdWords and Bidvertiser. Hosting for John Chow dot Com is sponsored by BlueFur Web Hosting. BlueFur provides this blog with great service and amazing uptime. I highly recommend them. How To Be a Six Figure Blogger
The secret to making big money by blogging is to drive a lot of traffic, then turn that traffic into cash by running as many advertising options as possible while still providing a good user experience. If you’re just running Google AdSense, you’re not maximizing income. Check out my recommended money makers to see what ad networks I used to produce my blog income.
I also recommend you download my free eBook, Make Money Online with John Chow dot Com. The book explains the methods I used to create content, drive traffic and make the big bucks. You can get it for free by signing up for my free newsletter at the top center of the page.
If I can go through this year and be able to say, “In my worst month, I made only $29,569.05.” I think I can live with that. ![]()

John, i think you will gain back double the amount difference from March and April. Fully support.
Next thing we know, “The Death Of Blogging” reports will be popping up all over the net.
Unfortunately I’ve already seen several, not based on this report, just from uninformed supposed experts that don’t have a clue about what blogging really is.
Don’t worry … a bunch of shitty ebooks will be launched every month by morons. I’ve read a lot of ebooks … 2 or 3 had good infos in it …
I like John’s ebook cause it really tells you exactly what he does and what he uses to make money … other ebooks just contain income reports and testimonials and make you buy another shitty ebook with the secrets to be a millionaire in 3 days
I’ve read John Chow ebook, and i think its the best I’ve read. Really helps a lot.
$29K JOhn is still a very impressive monthly income. I think it can still live up to the dotcom mogul lifestyle hahaha. Good for you and congrats still.

You spent too much time at the park and at conferences, Dot Com Pho etc. and your income suffered.
I’m sure John chow don’t depend on this blog to live. He has other projects that makes money for him.
Yup i think so too. But this blog i think he is good at it and the best.
Other than blogging he is also investing his money on advertising other affiliate programs. We can’t also deny the fact that he is the owner of TTZ.
Good points. I do recall a lot of posts with videos of being in different places, etc., and fewer posts about how to make money online. That might have been the reason for a drop (although the drop in earnings wasn’t much at all).
I agree - I really don’t see this blog’s income really ever significantly declining. Too many people like John. *=)
I’d say it was a good month, considering it was April… my own businesses generally decline in April too.
What is it about April?? Everyone returning from spring break and unwilling to click/spend money? Just an overall downturn in attention to subscriptions, hobbies, etc.? Are people just busier with the end of the school year (either with themselves or their kids)?
yup, we all know that you will do something about it. we also know that you will not let your income “down”. so what is your next planning john?

I’d say that’s a pretty good bad month to have. Congrats!
That is a pretty high record low :-).
Haha, it’s a record low, but still, well, ok I suppse.
But man, Feedburner must be a mighty letdown. What’s up with that?
very good!!!
You actually weren’t that far off average.

Excellent John! I wouldn’t be mad about $29,000 either!
True also, i myself also wish that i have that much earning in 1 month. Congrats to him also.
I’ll have to check my income tomorrow, but if you drop in income and I keep going up, I just might pass you someday.
Oh John…I’m sure you won’t be able to pay the bills with that 2008 record low.
Maybe you should take some tips from me
well attending conventions should have given some boost.
Well thats how the market is….
Well I don’t think thats too bad at all. Considering the current climate I am shocked the revenue didn’t go down further, all this people tightening their wallets and credit crunch business must be affecting all genres of business.
However I would think the make money online niche will suffer less as people look for further ways to diversify their income not wanting to rely on just their salary in insecure times.
The make money online niche that pays for John’s services isn’t suffering as much as other consumers. The people who pay for John’s reviews (huge source of his revenue) are business owners who are entrepreneurs and, for the most part, understand how to create money and go into good debt and not bad debt (Credit Cards).
Hey John Chow,
You are A+ blogger !!
It is always interesting to see how much you make. It is quite amazing you are doing so well, even if it is a record low for the year.
if you charge $500 to review a product. how come the income was $3,750.00?
ReviewMe only pays 50% for the review. So if the review is $500, I think John only makes $250.
But wait a minute… if that’s the case, John why not just start selling the reviews yourself? Or do most of the reviews you do come from the ReviewMe platform? Do they allow you to sell your own “Non-ReviewMe” reviews on your own site for a cheaper price?
I agree John, cut out the ReviewMe and do it yourself and keep all the cash. I know that you said that you don’t want to do it to them, but its time to start being greedy!
John talked about this one time and he said that those companies basically helped him get to where he is now, so he is going to stand by them and use their service.
yep … you should always remember where you started and what and who helped you.
If you become greedy … you surely will fail.
As John says … blog cause you like blogging and if you monetize the website it will generate cash … if you blog for money …. then you failed before you started.
Why not offer both?
Meaning, if someone orders a review through the “ReviewMe” site, they pay $500. If someone finds John’s site directly, and clicks on the advertise page, then they can pay less.
Actually…nevermind…that would probably tick off a lot of people, thinking they overpaid for the ReviewMe review.
I would dare to say that, if John do sell his own reviews, the best that i guess is, john will be receiving doubling the amount of email each day he receive before he start it. I’m sure a lot of company would ask for him
Well, you beat me “slightly” this month John. I posted my very first income report on my blog as well this month. However, my income grew by 341% from last month while yours dropped slightly, so it’s just a matter of time now!
My Google AdSense revenue increased by over 500% lol
John, That is an outstanding figures. I am just a beginner of the blogging world so mind to visit my site and give some comments on it. Besides that, I’m reading your E-book and still following the way you do.
I’ll take that as an all time record low…
Still working to get it even close to what you have. Great job man!
I’m stuck off of how you made almost 9,000 off of affiliate commissions with that amount of traffic. I get more pageviews on my site, but it is based on the industry of fashion from a business point of view..not that many affiliate programs surrounding that area….I need help I think..lol email me john please.
Good to see you’ve built up quite a stream of income for yourself. I just started following your income growth and some of your postings. Very interesting stuff. I like how you’ve diversified your streams within this one stream as well. Thanks for the advice on your site…. and thanks for the 10% off on the Wordpress theme (and you’re welcome for the commission haha). All the best!
Congrats John, even it’s disappointing you, it’s still a huge sum of money to me
Sheesh John get over with that “we will unsubscribe” the fact is the joke sucked big time and you should already forget about it and not remember.
Another fact is that since the day of the joke I am visiting your blog less and less (have you in RSS so I just click on URLs with interesting title) but its not like before I would read each and every post.
Aside that, hell yeah you can live even with $29k a month
Those numbers are still great.. I could see a reason for concern if you were in the low 20’s.
Maybe if you had featured Sally earlier in the month you would have met your goals… she had my son (16 months old) glued to the screen chasing the geese!
amazing… i get even more page views than johnchow.com yet you manage ten times the income…awesome Click for Nick
A damned shame, John. Maybe a little less Pho and a little more hard work will get you respectable numbers.
Let’s try to pick it up a bit for next month, eh?
Boy, have I got a long way to go. Everyone bow to the Chowster!!!
John - couple of questions.
Are the feedbrunner ads the ads we see in the feed below the:
“This Post Was Brought To You By”
They’re usually pretty well targeted to your niche, so I’m surprised you only made 17bucks.
I read your ebook and understand your method for creating urgency on affiliate products with a good sales page. I’m curious, though, could you give us a few exact examples of affiliate products on this site, and then break down your affiliate revenue a little more so we can see how it splits up to the different affiliate products. For instance, I noticed you had the affiliate link in the last blog post about the pro Wordpress themes - I assume they paid you guys to write the review, but it looked like you also make money through the affiliate program, too. Is that correct? Again, could you actaully break down your affiliate income into a few sub-categories?
Last question - I noticed last month Kontra paid you $1000. It looks like they just pay you a flat fee, almost as an advertisement for their service more than anything. Do you know what you would have earned if you had been paid by them usuing the normal method? I actually installed them on my sites and while I like the idea of it after two weeks it’s resulted in maybe 10-20 clicks per day which only amounts to around 30 cents. I’d be curious to compare what you would really earn through them as opposed to the $1000 flat fee they pay you.
Your income seems to decline!
Still some nice profits. Heck I would like to make 29k off my blog for a year. I would have a heart attack at 29k in 1 month. You might sell some more ads if you lower the price a little? I understand the paid reviews because actual companies can pay for a review. But 250 for a sidebar 125×125 button is a little expensive imo. Maybe some contests for free advertising for a month, or 50% off advertising on JC? I don’t really see you promote the site too much. It looks like you are just relying on word of mouth and links. Paid keywords and such. What about finding a high traffic site, heck even a business site like neverblueads or something. I’m sure you could strike up a deal with many many very high volume sites.
