Blog Income Report – February 2008

written by John Chow on March 1st, 2008

Hey! It’s a brand new month and that means it’s time to the famous John Chow dot Com blog income report. These income reports came about because of a case study I started way back in September 2006. I wanted to see if money could be made by blogging and using this blog as a test case was a logical choice. Before September, John Chow dot Com was a personal blog for me to ramble about whatever was on my mind and did not make any money.

Starting with just Google AdSense, the blog made $352.94 in its first month as a monetized site and quickly grew from there. Last month, the blog made $30,616.35. Not only was that a new income record, it was the first time the blog broke $30K. Being the shortest month of the year, February normally results in less income than January. However, the final number is still quite impressive.

Total Blog Income for February 2008: $29,643.01

While blog income is down from January, the per day income has gone up to $1,022.17. If February had the same number of days as January, I would be posting another income record. Here’s the income breakdown.

Blog traffic in February was 253,227 page views from 134,931 visitors, according to Google Analytics. If you take the blog page views and divide it by the blog income, you will get a site wide eCPM of $117.06. What this means is for every 1000 page views, John Chow dot Com makes $117.06, or 11.7 cents per view. How much would your blog make if it made $117 for every 1000 page views? February represents the first month that the blog broke the $1,000 per day barrier.

Blog expenses for the month were $487.56 for contextual advertising on Google AdWords and Bidvertiser. Hosting for John Chow dot Com is sponsored by BlueFur Web Hosting. They provide this blog with great service and amazing uptime. Use coupon code JohnChowRocks to get 15% off any BlueFur hosting packages.

How To Be a Six Figure Blogger

Making money from blogging requires you to do only two things: drive a lot traffic, then maximize the income from that traffic. These are the only two elements you really need to work on. If doesn’t matter how great your content is if nobody reads it. If you have a ton of traffic but just running Google AdSense, then you’re leaving a ton of money on the table. If I had stuck with AdSense and never tried anything else, this blog would be making about $1,000 per month instead $1,000 per day. Check out my recommended money makers to see what ad networks I used to produce my blog income.

I also recommend you download my free eBook, Make Money Online with John Chow dot Com. The book explains the methods I used to create content, drive traffic and make money online. You can get it for free by signing up for my free newsletter at the top center of the page.

  1. Wow, this is one of the first reports I have seen, just started reading your blog, but I’m amazed at how much private ad space is getting you.

  2. Congrats! That darn February always messes things up! At least you got the extra day for the leap year! $30k+ next month easily. :twisted:

  3. Congrats! You survived the short month, so I expect to see another 30k month in March! :P

  4. Congrats! At least I can say that Feb was my highest earnings month at $1253.43 while John didn’t hit a new high last month :twisted:

  5. Question: Do you have to pay for hosting? You say BlueFur sponsors you, does that mean they are hosting you for free in exchange for shout outs here and there?

    • John pays something like $3600 for his hosting for TTZ Media but I believed he’s sponsored by bluefur for this site.

    • I’m pretty sure bluefur pays for it. They get the publicity in return.

    • If a hosting sponsors a site it means that the site is being hosted for free of course. It is a good deal actually, they get featured at least once a month and get a shout once in awhile too, the value of the shouts and mentions estimated are well worth then the server cost.

      Yet a great revenue, $1k a day thats yummie indeed.

      • I agree it is a great deal. Not only the shouts are worth, but they get a higher PR also, and they are certainly ranked better for some keywords/phrases. It’s magic, man.

  6. Aye Carumba. Great consistent results. You’re doing well for yourself, JC, congrats.

  7. team ray

    john chow you da masn. hustlers around the world are bowing down to you :lol: :lol:

  8. Jim

    Big news John! Congrats on that awesome earnings report. I am trying to monetize my blog site as effectively as possible, and posts like this really keep my morale high, based on the fact that it is very possible to dominate the web and get some great value from a simple blogging website. Keep up the great work :grin:

  9. Way to go John on another amazing month for earnings. You are definitely an inspiration.

  10. congratz for feb! but i’ve seen that you have lost another page rank point…now you are 3

  11. Impressive figures as always John.

  12. Classic John Chow. These income reports are pure genius. So much so everyone has copied the concept.

  13. Wow, I want to be like you,I wish my blog starts to make bigmoney soon! :wink:

  14. I’m quite amazed how much your making with private ads.. dang

  15. Hello John,
    I love your set up and for those who haven’t read your ebook, good all the more for me. :cool:
    Seriously, though, the book is fantastic and I have already began to implement bits and pieces. I just need to drive lots more traffic.

    Thanks – david

  16. It really is amazing that this blog produces that kind of income. Can you imagine if you add up ttzmedia and ttz also what kind of bank he makes?

  17. Great job John.
    I’m proud to say that I’ve followed your lead on a lot of things and now have 450 to 500 readers and last month made about $175. I’ve only been doing this for 8 weeks! Not only that, but I got about 145,000 page views last month too.

    Your ideas work. Period. :cool:

  18. Excellent! John, Congrats!!

  19. Congrats John. I see RSS Readership is climbing very fast. Good for you.

  20. 29.643k is awesome. Congrats John. Well, we should not forget that this month had only 29 days. If it had 31 days like the previous month, it could have been the best month ever. Congrats again.

  21. Nice work John! Missed ya guys today at Pho, but I will be there next week. :)

  22. Hi John,

    What do you mean with “Private Ad Sales”?

    Why aren’t you using adsense?

    Anyway, congrats and keep it up!

    • Ads I sold myself. Why should I use AdSense?

      • I’m just starting with this online advertising thing, so I don’t know if there are obvious reasons to discard Adsense.

        It’s just that I was surprised that you were not currently using Adsense even though you recommended it in your eBook. Did you change your mind concerning Adsense since writing that eBook?

  23. ola John and everybody
    After almost 2 months I have computer again so I can read your blog(s) and make comments. Today I downloaded your GREAT eBook.
    I didn’t read all yet. But, I learned a lot from first few pages.
    I was reading carefuly chapter :oops: “10 blogging mistakes to avoid”. I am doing the most of mistakes and I suppose a lot of bloggers are doing this mistakes. Specialy those , who are “Not Reading John Chow Dot Com” :lol:
    Now I am getting understand why i do not earn with my blog(s) :cool: YET!

  24. Michael

    Reading this post gives me a bit of hope. Feb was my site’s first month and it generated $1736.85 from adsense largely due to high traffic sites writing about it (non-paid reviews). Hopefully i’ll be able to grow to 5k/month by the end of the year.

  25. Very inspiring results John and I’m sure each time you post your totals you get more subscribers downloading your ebook.

    Most would be happy to get the amount of income you did from even just one of those sources, never mind from all as you have.

    Great work and well deserved for all the effort you put into it.

    ~Terry

  26. Congrats again…great earnings…what wrong with your pagerank..now it is PR3

  27. Congrats John, your blog revenue figures are an inspiration to us all. Keep it up man!

  28. Kind of selling out by saying that the blog income being down should be blamed on the fact that there are less days in the month.

    Considering the fact that all ads on this site are based on a monthly pay terms, and you no longer run contextual advertising. It is a shame when you consider the fact that you have addedd the pull down ads and the ads at the top of the site as well.

    Telling people that the per day earnings are up is a nice way to confuse anyone when you consider that the only reason it is up is because of the 28 days.

    • Your assumption that my ad revenue is fixed is incorrect. Text Link Ads, affiliates sales and TTZ Media are all based on traffic and number of days the ads run. For example TLA are based on 30 day pricing. If there are less days, the price is pro-rated. Less days in the month also means less days to sell reviews. I got a review order today but it has to go into the new month. If there was 30 days this month, it would have been included in the total.

      • Don'tKidAround

        Who are you kidding John? Let’s face it. You are just trying to beat the drum, so that more private ad sales will be made.

        January 2008
        * Private Ad Sales: $15,440.00
        * Affiliate Commissions: $6,147.45
        * ReviewMe: $5,700.00
        * Text Link Ads: $2007.99
        * Kontera: $1,000.00
        * TTZ Media: $320.91
        * Grand Total: $30,616.35
        February 2008
        * Private Ad Sales: 14,450.00 DOWN by $1,000
        * Affiliate Commissions: $7,553.06 DOWN $2,000
        * ReviewMe: $4,000.00 DOWN DOWN by $1,700
        * Text Link Ads: $2,289.70 UP by $200
        * Kontera: $1,000.00 SAME
        * TTZ Media: $350.25 UP $20
        * Grand Total: $29,643.01 DOWN $1,000

        Don’t tell me because of a day lacking, you earned 15% in terms of your affiliate commssions, and 8% in terms of your private ad sales? Even your TLA is down.

        Face it, your blog is drawing less attention. You are just beating the drums.

      • My apologies than, I was on the assumption that TLA was fixed on a monthly period.

        Besides TLA and TTZ, your private ad sales were down, and I know that is fixed on a monthly basis add in the fact that you did add 2 new advertising methods it is a bit of a let down.

        Not hating John, just bringing things to light.

  29. That’s amazing John.

    I would like to make a request please: Please start showing us the amount of time you spend on the blog each month. An earnings per hour report would be a lot of fun. My guess is that you spent no more than 30 hours on this blog in Feb. That’s about $1k per hour. Am I close?

    :razz:

  30. I just wish I could get the traffic….starting with an unemployment check I can hardly get by on anyway makes it seem impossible.

  31. John,

    Your work shows for itself. It give motivation, but if I want to make money like you, I got to think one step ahead of you! Great work!!!
    :lol:

  32. Congrats on a record month!

  33. Congratz John. Your an inspiration.

  34. You are talking Canadian Dollars right? Not American dollars. :cool:

    So CAN$29,643.01 would really only be USD$28,753.72. Just kidding! I know that you are talking US Dollars. :razz:

    You’re right the Canadian Dollar has really strengthened against the US dollar over the past few years. Back in 1998 one Canadian Dollar was only 70 cents, now it’s up to 97 cents. :shock:

  35. I see that your RSS readers are increasing too. You went from 17K to 18K in about 2 days.

    • Yep that number was constantly increasing but the surprising increase in 1k readers happened in the past 2-3 days itself, i too had noticed that. :shock:

  36. Amazing numbers once again. Out of curiosity, do you get the same ppc rate for ttz media or a special one since you own it?

  37. Wow. It still amazes me every month. I wish my blog was earning $117 CPM. I could quit my job and be set for a while. :grin:
    -Andrew

  38. Good stats and income report there John..
    30k $ is something just huge from a blog!!!

  39. Wow nice job. I noticed your page rank went down a few days ago too.

    • Yea, I just noticed his PR went from a 4 to a 3. I don’t get Google, John’s site gets more authority by more and more people linking to article after article and they lower his PR. But that’s Google.

      • Are you serious? Google has made it loud and clear that selling links on you site will lower your PR. This has been written about on numerous occasions. Where do you think a large percentage of his income comes from?

  40. John, you know what might be interesting. Along with your monthly updates, it would be nice to see a percentage increase/decrease from the month before.

    for example:

    private ad sales: $x (+10%)
    kontera: $y (+0%)
    total: $z (+20%)
    etc

  41. No wonder you incur so much ire from your “haters”…LOL
    Keep making money JC and laugh all the way to the bank. Soon I will be right behind you.

  42. You make more in a month than I make pretty much all year, and even worse, your ReviewMe this month is more than I make in a month. That’s just one of your income sources making more than I make all month. Just wow. And this is JUST from this blog, correct?

  43. Sportsrmylife

    I am calling my shot here…March you are going to have a $40k month! I will also say that June is going to be your first $50k month!

  44. Where is the trackback to this post?

    Anyways, mentioned it in my Sunday Summary:

    http://www.viralking.com/sunday-summary-02032008/

  45. Great job, keep up the good work. $34,500 for March,

  46. Great earnings. I tried Kontera on one of my blogs but with not too much of success

  47. I couldn’t say something John, except wow… Would you mind if i ask you what affiliate network are you using?

  48. A Job well done, John. Keep doin’ your thing. I love the way you diversify your income.

  49. Well done john you have my eyes…

  50. Looking good. I always like reading your blog income posts.

  51. I always wait for these posts on all blogs :)

    -Mike

  52. Alison

    Hi,
    I notice that Michael Kwan writes many posts & reviews on your blog.

    How come he is never listed in your blog expenses??? Surely he must be getting compensated for writing all of those articles. If so, wouldn’t your monthly blog totals need to be adjusted to reflect that expense?

    Thank you. Congratulations on your success!
    Alison

  53. That’s quite an increase since the old days of only relying on one income stream (Adsense), great job.

  54. It is still impressive as not many bloggers can reach that milestone. But I am still wondering why your PR is now 3 while others are 6 & 7. Thanks, congrats!

    • I think I know why…..

      Feature Site Sponsorship

      Feature Sites are located site wide on the right sidebar, above the Recent Articles section. Pricing is $240 per month per link. If you’re interested in buying a Feature Site link, send the anchor text and URL to johnchow@johnchow.com and pay with the PayPal link below.

      Maybe because google detected paid links and thought about penalise?

      Johnchow.com is such a big site that even without any link building it won’t fall below 4, so it is definitely a penalty. Maybe, I ain’t sure.

      But anyway no body cares about PR now. The readership of this blog is so huge that he doesnt give importance to page ranks anymore.
      PR is also losing its value these days.

  55. Regards for the money you make.

    I ove your blog, i just got here from my friends blog, through http://blog.belive.ws google ads.

    Regards,
    Steve

  56. Wow!! I hope I can earn that much too!!

  57. With some work involved, why not. But, it takes money to make money, and John is superb at giving a little and taking a lot. I don’t meen anything negative – it’s a rare skill. John, you should be prowd.

  58. John, just an advice but it’s seriously getting stale with you using the first two paragraphs for each income report. Change it, seriously…

  59. To be honest with you, this time it’s a little bit disappointing your blog income! :grin:

    Because I see that your RSS subscribers made a big jump lately, maybe we should wait for next month’s report.

  60. Congrats on your milestone!

  61. Wow, another great month!!!

  62. wow..there’s a great discussion going on here! well anyway, i am just here to congratulate the man who made big in blogging. i really didn’t know JC back then but i always see his name in all blogs that talks about making money with their blogs. again congrats both for the income and the increase of RSS subscribers!

  63. Tim

    My question is, what is the NET income, after expenses?
    How much did you spend on advertising, hosting, and other items for the month of February?
    It’d be nice with your monthly income reports to also show a monthly expense report!

    • Read the entire post.

      • Tim

        I did read the entire post..You stated:
        “Blog expenses for the month were $487.56 for contextual advertising on Google AdWords and Bidvertiser. Hosting for John Chow dot Com is sponsored by BlueFur Web Hosting.”

        Is that ALL you spent, and by your hosting being sponsored by BlueFur, are you saying that you dont pay any cash for it??? If so, you rock! How many hours would you say you put into the blog over the course of a month?

        • That’s all that was spent that was related to the blog. I guess I could include dining out but the blog doesn’t need to eat. Sponsored by BlueFur means I don’t pay for hosting. Not only do I not pay for hosting, BlueFur pays me to use them. :twisted:

  64. Walter

    $30K/mo.? I would be happy with !0% of that. Still haven’t gotten the E-book, John. How long does it usually take?
    You’re probably tired of hearing it but, nonetheless, you are an inspiration.

  65. John Chow, those are absolutely awesome results! Great inspiration for any budding blogger. Keep up the great work and I hope you keep going from strength to strength.

  66. I’m still not the RSS subscriber here. I wait to be the 22000th :lol: :lol:

    Hope you reward me 4 it!

  67. Absolutely great incomes, in particular for Ad Sense. Is it the first program fo monetize a blog or a website?
    Just for information: I have my italian website (a newspaper) and I have Google Ad Sense with other programs like tradedoubler… The italian programs of payperclick can give you only 2/4 eurocents for a click… ridicolous in front of the Ad Sense payments. In Italy we are 100 years behind.
    John if you wanna open a .it website in italian, just send me an email!!

  68. Amazing, it looks like every time I visit your blog lately your rss readers have increased by more than 1,000 per day Are you noticing an increase in traffic in the last week?

    • I guess success breeds more success for JohnChow dot com

      As others learn about John’s site and blog about it, their readers come and visit, and subscribe as well. It’s like a viral video speading around the internet like wild fire.

      Eventually anyone searching for ways to make money online will come across this site.

      ~Terry

      • Wild fire? Bad comparison, no way JohnChow could burn. His website would survive a nuclear bomb thrown on the hosting company’s headquarters…

  69. It seemed like yesterday when John had 16k subscribers…

  70. how to make income like that.. my adsense only got 10 cent per day average.hUHUhu :sad: :sad: :sad:

  71. Hi John
    I am certainly glad that you just switched to start using an Aweber auto responder. I first subscribed to your mailing list with an inbox.com e-mail account around the first of the year, but got nothing. So I tried with an e-mail account on my server, but still got nothing. On Jan. 5th, 2008 I subscribed with a Yahoo e-mail account and managed to get your first e-mail. So I was able to download your e-book but got nothing after that.

    Since you have switched to Aweber I first received your notice to my e-mail account on my server so I confirmed to receive your e-mail there. Since then I have also received your Aweber confirmation e-mail to my inbox.com address, which I didn’t confirm. I have not received your confirmation e-mail to my Yahoo address yet. Today, two months later after initially subscribing, since you switched to Aweber I finally received your first e-mail.

    I’d have to predict that your blogs monthly income is going to increase even more because of Aweber. :smile: Now myself and probably a lot more will be notified when you make your blog entries. It goes to show it’s worth paying for the best.

    Thanks
    Mike

  72. congratz on another great month.

  73. great achievement John. Congratulation.

  74. Congrats John…. I also just posted mine on my blog although not as high as yours.. it’s only about $5k :razz:

  75. That is great blog. I just place Google Adsense on my blog and a small buck has been made every month.

    • Well, if you get a lot of traffic, at the start, even google adense can give good money. And then just get traffic, more traffic means private ads sales. Or try selling Ads on webmaster forums etc.

  76. you seem to be the top blog earner I have met. hats off for you…

  77. Wow, that’s a lot of money. Nevertheless, what’s the matter?? Couldn’t break $30K again??

  78. 150+ comments.. Wow John Chow is the man!

  79. The reason this post has so many comments is because it deals specifically with what anyone come to this blog for. THE MONEY! Keep up the good work, John!

  80. You do good sir, you do good. And the best part about it is that you share your success stories! Keep on keepin’ on.

  81. I am wondering about bidvertiser. You pay them but don’t report any income from them unless it is grouped in with affiliates?

    I signed up with them two days ago and I did not like the ads they were posting plus I tested the clicks and it did not register any clicks from a trial run. This was not from my own computer or IP address. I’m not going to signup and run ads without doing some testing.

    Steve

  82. Really Impressive income just for blogging.Congratulation dude.

  83. Amazing. And at the same time a little disheartening. I found this site I think from a Mashable piece on Ebooks you need to read. Because right now I’m Ebook and software experimenting crazy. After making I think around 3 bucks from Adsense last month with 22,000 pageviews I was like “something is REALLY wrong here.”

    So John, your site is a testament that it CAN happen. Plus even some of your comment people are having success in as short as 8 weeks or 1 month. Crazy.

  84. John the way you describe the math to figure out eCPM is wrong.

    page views/ income doesn’t equal 117.06… you get that figure by doing this:

    Income / page views * 1000

    29643.01 / 253227 * 1000 = 117.06

    I just wanted to clarify this in case anyone is trying to figure out how much their own eCPM is.

  85. Dan

    “I have decided to donate the income from the blog to my church and other charities. John Chow dot Com is my personal blog and making a profit from it just seems strange to me.” 10/1/2006

    Are you still donating the $30K per month you make?

  86. John Chow is actually the greatest. 30.000 a month is great. I wish I had these numbers, too. Right now I make about 30$ per month, except from January when I earned 80$ from private advertising, and February when I earned 50$ from affiliate ads.

  87. Wow, the numberes are amazing! Bravo!

  88. $30K per month? i am speechless now.. :mad:

  89. John, the most valuable part of this post was the mention of your free ebook…I can’t believe I never noticed that link til yesterday,so I downloaded it and was amazed!

    I was compelled to write a review on it that I’d like you to take a look at. The post is called The Best eBooks I’ve Read So Far…please leave a comment and tell me what you think.

  90. Rick

    Great article. I used to make more than $30K per month in my previous occupation before I retired and crashed and burned. Now I am on the comeback trail to make the money by giving good value in my blog. Been there, done that! Nice to know that it can be done by blogging. Drop by my site and sit by my campfire any time you wish. Rick

  91. this is amazing, wish I could be like you!

  92. :grin:
    greeting Mr. John Chow!

    i just wanna say thanks for the e-book, but its feel so hard when we start and only have “free blog website”.
    Most of “money maker website” rejecting the free website. Could you give us solutions ?
    (mmm… please give review about my blog, anything… even it good or bad, thank you so much) :wink:

  93. Impressive stats ! Makes my $30 a month from Adsense seem rather derisory !

  94. Fantastic. I’d be happy with one tenth of that.

  95. thanx for your advices…

    :D i really appreciate that.

  96. Great John!
    After going through your earning stats I found something very common between us!! hehe …

    Even, I make more money from TLA than Google!

    God Bless and may your tribe increase!
    warm regards

  97. woow thats a lot of money
