Blogging From The Car

Right now, I have the family in the car. We’re on our way to California for a nice Christmas vacation. I’ve decided that it’s just too cold in the Pacific Northwest and Sally has been bugging me to go to Disneyland ever since she dressed up as Tinker Bell for the Microsoft Halloween Spooktacular.

Instead of flying, we’ve decided to do a road trip. This allowed me to try something totally new – blogging from the car! I’m actually quite surprised that I haven’t blogged from the car yet. After all, I’ve blogged from pretty much everywhere else. The following video shows the technologies that allows me to blog while driving down the highways and byways of America.

Public Service Announcement

Please blog responsibly. Know your limits. Don’t blog and drive. Otherwise, we’ll be seeing blogging driving counter attacks this New Year’s Eve!

hahah, yeah i was surprised. you’ve blogged fom a train and an airplane but not a car??? haha guess theres a first time for everything…

    1. d3so says:

Just goes to show you can blog from practically anywhere. Can’t wait til John blogs while on the john 😉

      1. PPC Ian says:

Personally, I’d get motion sick trying to blog from the car, but this is definitely awesome stuff. 🙂

        1. You call it awesome and I call it stupidity.

What’s the need of taking this kind of risk when you are with your family and you are driving as well.

Yeah video blogging is ok but writing and checking on laptop … big no.

          1. John … never ever do that again.

If you want to show us your set up of your car than park it and than shoot.

We all love Sally and hence requesting you … please not again.

          2. John Chow says:

Umm, i wasn’t driving. I was the passenger.

          3. PPC Ian says:

            Social Bookmarking Offer,
Check out the video. John is in the passenger seat (there is no steering wheel in front of him). 🙂 You are correct that nobody should try to blog while driving a vehicle, just while being a passenger.
            Best,
            Ian

          4. You were way too quick to assume that John was driving. He’s not dumb.

          5. I forgot that in USA driver seat is on left side.

Usually in UK and in India its in right hand side.

Nice set up John, now you are connected with your money everywhere … 🙂

          6. haha I thought he was driving but he wasnt obviously. Even talking on phone and driving is strictly forbidden here or I guess anywhere in Canada or Usa.

        2. Well I wonder if that card can be used in canada. stupid question maybe since John is canadian… but I’ve had trouble with my Sprint EVDO card not working in canada. maybe i’ll give this virgin mobile thing a shot!

      2. dotCOMreport says:

        That would be definitely something!

  2. David says:

I have blogged on the road, but not quite that style, just using the wordpress app on my iphone…lol

Have a great time in Cali!

    1. d3so says:

I never blogged anywhere else but at home. I just use the wordpress app to manage comments.

      1. Its all depend on the urgency and need.

If I can avoid and can do it later on than I would prefer that.

Yeah but while traveling (not driving) I would prefer my Google reader a lot.

        1. So you are also fond of Google reader. Interesting … would love to know your collection.

  3. I was a little baffled when reading your post that you we’re actually typing whilst driving, but great setup nevertheless.

    1. d3so says:

I wonder if anyone has ever written a post while driving.

      1. John Chow says:

        I certainly hope not!

      2. Abhik says:

What!! Are we having a dare to die contest here? 🙂

      3. Harshad says:

I have written lot of posts while in the car but I wasn’t driving.

        1. Yes that is acceptable.

What is the need of doing all this stuff while you drive the car and that also when your whole family in that car.

          Boy that one is scary.

  4. Fernando says:

    Nice John!
    Wish you happy holidays!
That Virgin MiFi is crazy by the way!

    1. d3so says:

I think it’s kind of costly though. $150 for the unit plus $40 per month. I wonder how fast it is.

      1. John Chow says:

It’s 3G speed. About 1 to 1.5 mBit download. What I like about it is there’s no contract. If I don’t plan to use it next month, then I just don’t buy any data. $40 for unlimited is quite a bargain when you compared to AT&T charging $30 per month for 2GB for an iPad. And it can only be used on the iPad.

        1. Abhik says:

Then we surely enjoying a cheaper data rate here in India.

I bought a MTZ mBlaze which cost about $50 and the unlimited plan costs about $23.

          1. Harshad says:

The speed is a HUGE difference though. Also, MBlaze is a data card… what John is using is a MiFi card which can also share connections to multiple devices.

          2. I think Tata 3G have that kind of instrument as far as I know.

          3. Abhik says:

No difference in speed.. MTS mBlaze is a EVDO service and the download speed is 1.5 MB/s. The upload is around 600KB/s which is okay with me.

          4. Harshad says:

I don’t get that much speed on a wired broadband connection here in Mumbai. Anyone getting a 1.5 MBPS download speed with MTS?

  5. Adam says:

I also have one of those Virgin Mobile Mifi and love it. Sure I could have picked up a similar device with most wireless carriers, but the fact that it’s no contact and unlimited data sold me. The only place it hasn’t worked well for me was at DFW, but there could have just been heavy use on their network at the time. Even though I had full bars the service was at a crawl… like 14.4 modem speeds.

    1. John Chow says:

I’ve found that when I’m really taxing it, like uploading a video, the battery gets drain faster than the outlet can charge it!

  6. JPop says:

Yeah!! You are definitely the greatest blogger ^^ Have a nice vacation with your lovely family to California! Nice vid 😉

    1. d3so says:

John shouldve came down here last week. It’s raining here until Wednesday.

      1. John Chow says:

It’s OK. I’m staying until the New Year. 🙂

        1. Oh the new year plan for blogging business !!

  7. ikki says:

haha blogging from a car, i know someone that blogging from a submarine

    1. d3so says:

It seems that many others have blogged from unusual places.

      1. Abhik says:

        Nothing is impossible mate..

  8. Simon Dodd says:

Great video John, I have blogged from the train and car and from a chair lift on a ski slope once before but it was all done with my iPhone, I do need to look into getting a mobile web dongle of some description though, that Virgin MiFi looks really good though, it’s quite tempting!

    Thanks again

    Simon

  9. PPC Ian says:

John, Disneyland is a great place to enjoy the holidays! 🙂 I haven’t been there for a while, but definitely want to go back. It has been raining like crazy in northern and southern CA. Hope the rain stops for your trip!

  10. Jonathan says:

How about doing a video blog when you are on the move?

  11. Free Picks says:

blogging from cam :p not a bad idea, waiting for next post which will be blogging from washroom :p

    1. ikki says:

i will blogging at shower hahaha LOL

      1. Harshad says:

Not sure if all your devices will work after the water gets in to them 😀

        1. May be a hot video post will work … lollzz

      2. Abhik says:

Make sure to wrap yourself with a waterproof polythene.

  12. Abhik says:

    Awesome blogging gear man..
by the way, from where are you gonna make your next blogpost? mount everest?

  13. In India this is not be possible at the most of the roads because they will not going to give you a singe half hour jerk free.

    1. Abhik says:

jerking is not a problem if you are not on a public transport..

    2. Harshad says:

It’s possible. John wasn’t driving while doing all this.

    3. It is not possible also because Internet coverage is not available everywhere in india.

      1. Harshad says:

Constant Internet connection might not be available anywhere in the world. The connection does drop or slows down depending on locations. I have had constant Internet connection with my Airtel cell phone and Reliance data card while traveling from Mumbai to Pune by road… so yes it’s possible. 🙂

        1. Boy … Mumbai to Pune is one of the best road.

All long drive lover simply love it.

  14. What a great article John,
I was thinking while reading the post Title that this post will be about cars !!

    1. Abhik says:

It could have been.. If he was on a trial run for a drift car.. 🙂

  15. we saw many video post from car but this one is quite different.

  16. You are driving your family in the high way and you are showing us blogging from car.

    I think that is stupidity.

How you can take chance with your family.

    1. Harshad says:

Lol ZK Chill. I don’t think he is driving there.

      1. Harshad says:

John is talking about blogging from the Car not blogging while driving.

        1. you did not check … car was moving when he was checking restaurant … hoot suite was also there …

So even some small distraction can be dangerous.

If he want to show it than he should park and than shoot.

What do you think Harshad ?

          1. Harshad says:

Yes, the car is running but someone else is driving it. Not John.

    2. John Chow says:

I wasn’t driving! LOL I was the passenger.

    3. Jesse says:

I’ve always pondered how some people who comment on blogs like this can make any money since they do not have any common sense.

Let’s see, he is going down the Pacific Coast in the USA. Unless he was in the UK or some other country where they drive on the right side of the car, he obviously wasn’t driving.

Secondly, with both hands free to hold the camera and move his computer and other instruments for the entire length of that video, common sense would say he isn’t driving.

The only stupidity I am picking up is that of the OP.

  17. fas says:

    Which car was that?

    1. Haha.Don’t bog and drive.Love it.

      Awesome Remark,
      Bradley Nordstrom

  18. Dan Lew says:

Next will be blogging on the back of a motorbike? LOL 🙂

  19. VienChinh says:

    As D-Com in VietNam

  20. Bit Doze says:

I do this too from time to time, if I do a long ride. Also what you can do if an idea poops up in a car.

  21. iQ EVANS says:

Driving to so cal would be a good idea, if it wasn’t raining cats&&dogs outside

  22. Jesse says:

The first time I blogged from the car was in 2006 on Collins Avenue in South Beach. I had picked up a Verizon Wireless card earlier that day.

I also watched pr0n that day just because I imagined few people in the world were streaming pr0n live in their car at that very second. At the time it seemed as exciting and adventurous as walking on the moon would be.

  23. Merry Christmas! Hope you have Enjoy your vacation. I have read several blog here it’s different. Very useful tips I can use my car travel time with your idea. Thanks

  24. d3so says:

Ha ha ! so funny , but don’t do that again you could have a car accident. I don’t want this website to be down !

  25. LatestGirls says:

A price tag is attached to it. LOL.

Have to have the goodies to do so.

  26. Hehe that’s awesome! I would never blog from the car though 🙂

  27. wow great stuff. But yes, blogging and driving might not be exactly safe. Kudos for driving your family for such a long trip. I wouldn’t personally be able to do it. I prefer the safe ways (train, airplane) not that it’s safe but I’m not in control of the situation. 🙂

  28. Very clever indeed……………………..I think it’s just another demonstration of your tireless dedication and love for the camera!
