Bugatti Veyron Vs. Jet Fighter

written by John Chow on November 15, 2007

The Bugatti Veyron is the fastest production Supercar money can buy. With 1001 HP, the mighty bug can go from 0 to 100MPH is 5.5 second and top out at 253MPH. However, speed is a relative term. What is fast in one reality isn’t so fast in another. So, what happens when $1.7 million Veyron meets up with a $45 million EF-2000 jet fighter for a drag race? This video will explain it.

To make the two mile long race more fair, the jet fighter has to do one mile going straight up, turn around and nose dive straight down to the finish line. The Bugatti will blast down to the mile mark, turn around and race back to the finish line. First one to cross the line wins. Who’s the winner? Watch the video and find out.

Damn. That just makes me want to drive a veyron so bad.
Very cool video.

SEO Optimization November 15, 2007 at 4:44 pm

I don’t know what it makes me….but damn it was like watching a really intense movie in cinema.

Crap that Veyron is just beautiful …

Joker November 16, 2007 at 5:31 pm

whew… glad that the fighter jet did not disappoint me :)

/me wondered what will e results be if we switched to F1 racing car ;)

BareFly November 16, 2007 at 8:24 pm

would have gone faster than Bug but not enough to catch up a supersonic jet.

Mike November 16, 2007 at 10:43 am

car???? that video makes me want to fly a jet fighter!

Matt November 19, 2007 at 7:31 pm

me too lol

Iantrepreneur November 15, 2007 at 3:39 pm

haha – poor guy – man that was crazy both took the turn at the same time – but I figure the 45million jet would do far better than the car

Domtan November 15, 2007 at 3:41 pm

This is hilarious. Car versus jet? They should have included a super fast speedboat too. Got at it by land, air and water.

MoneyNing November 15, 2007 at 3:41 pm

$90+ a barrel crude oil………

Do they get gas at Costco?

Bedroom Furniture November 15, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Important point there! I wish they would consider this when they make all these swashbuckling, macho displays. But then i think all car racing in rubbish so don’t mind me

MoneyNing November 16, 2007 at 10:38 am

Haha don’t let John see this or he might ban your IP since he loves cars :)

Mike November 16, 2007 at 10:45 am

yeah i wonder how much fuel the fighter used…. and actually the car for that matter… how many miles to the gallon did they get?

Thomas De Maesschalck November 15, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Kickass

SeedsForWealth November 15, 2007 at 4:03 pm

Absolutely Kickass

Andy November 15, 2007 at 3:50 pm

That is Hammond from the Brittish show Top Gear. He got into a really bad accident running a jet dragster not too long ago. From the looks of this video, this must have been before he went back on the show. It looks like he still has some remnants of the crash on the right side of his head.

I believe that James May, also from Top Gear, took the Veryon to Germany where they made it to top speed on the 5 mile straight away at the Volkswagen test track. How the car handled was simply amazing.

PropertyIreland November 15, 2007 at 5:15 pm

yeah, this was after his crash, was shown on BBC 2 weeks ago, would you do it after a crash like that? what a TV host…
you can see the crash & him talking about it after the crash here:

as for those saying it’s not a fair race, the show – Top Gear is a fantastic car show in the UK and usually does at least one experiment every week, while these experiments are fun they are not scientific and should be taken with 1/2 a pinch of salt, usually done for fun & what great fun they have…
the latest one is a race across london between a bike, car, public transport & a boat, you can see it here:
guess who wins…

Mike November 16, 2007 at 10:46 am

man, i wonder who thinks of these “competitions”… it was cool though!

Andy November 16, 2007 at 12:22 pm

I don’t know if I would hop back in the saddle that soon after that kind of crash. Kudos to Hammond for sure. Yes, I love all the crazy experiments that they do. Did you see the one where they strapped solid rocket boosters to a car and shot it up like a space shuttle. It didn’t release and crashed and burned. Great show – I DVR it all the time.

Andy November 16, 2007 at 12:26 pm

Interesting – The video says that Hammond didn’t do what he was told. It goes on to say that he hit the brakes instead of staying “on the line.”

Money Blue Book November 15, 2007 at 3:54 pm

If I had that kind of money I’d rather get a yault.

Mike November 16, 2007 at 10:47 am

do you mean yacht?

Terrence November 15, 2007 at 3:57 pm

When are you going to buy one of those?

It actually was slightly closer than I anticipated. As soon as the jet gets moving, there is no way on earth the car has a chance.

Simon November 15, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Virtual Loterry November 15, 2007 at 4:02 pm

I don´t need to see the video, to know who´s the winner. It´s to obvious

Domtan November 15, 2007 at 4:05 pm

The Jet was fighting gravity.

John Chow November 15, 2007 at 4:51 pm

True but coming back down, gravity was helping.

alexander batista November 15, 2007 at 6:04 pm

That’s tru but I think the VW beatle can beat both of them Kinda like me (the VW beatle) beating johnchow (the jet)

Domtan November 15, 2007 at 6:14 pm

John, one can drop an apple from any altitude and it’ll come back down. But when attempting to throw an apple vertically up, it’ll only cover a limited short distant. The disadvantage significantly outweighs the advantage.

Notice how the Bugatti stood no chance against the Jet, when parallel horizontally, both at the start and the end of the race.

krillz November 15, 2007 at 4:09 pm

that’s a bullshit test, that jet fighter has a much bigger turn radius, make it fair and square. 1 mile both ways, with them stopping between those two. No turn radius in the equation.

Also he said, vertical vs horizontal? Nah that jet fighter was in that horizontal race too long before it started going vertically, that’s just not fair. If the race would have been fair veyron would have lost big time.

With that said, still an amazing car, on the paper. Still haven’t seen any real test runs of it, with sharp turns etc. Only straight where they show us it reaching its top speed.
This got me thinking, might be the only damn thing this car can do reach the amazing top speed, but on difficult circuits does it suck ass?

Matthew November 16, 2007 at 3:40 am

The tests on TopGear are just for fun so I wouldnt get all technical and worried about them being wrong or not.

Tiff drove the Veyron around a test track a few months back and it seemed to do well. It should be on YouTube if you do a search for tiff and veyron.

Mike November 16, 2007 at 10:49 am

I wonder how they arranged a 45 million dollar jet plane to do a show like that? Like who do you ask? the government? and even then, its surprising that they would say sure, we’ll rent our jet to you… for nothing! or at least im assuming thats what they said…

Robert November 15, 2007 at 4:10 pm

A mile run isn’t exactly a drag race. In the late 80s early 90s Hot Rod magazine did a drag race between Don Garlit’s top fuel dragster and an F18. The F18 was timed launching off the carrier catapult and the dragster was timed for the same distance that the catapult ran. Don won.

krillz November 15, 2007 at 4:16 pm

yeah that’s what I was talking about in my comment.
Dragsters are just pure evil power. Some imported from the states in sweden are banned from the strip because they are too fast, stupid rules.

A dragster, that’s like taking a fighter engine, stripping off all weight, putting in a cage + seat and off you go. Would like to drive one of those.

Etienne Teo November 15, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Ever heard of fighter goes supersonic barrier on ground? I doubt anyone had.

krillz November 15, 2007 at 4:45 pm

might have something to do with it being against the law in most countries…

Mike November 16, 2007 at 10:50 am

that was pretty funny when off the start the car was winning and the guy was like “im beating a jet!!!” then a second later you see this massive jet passing him like it was nothing!

Living Off Dividends November 15, 2007 at 5:25 pm

great video.

the question is, does John Chow have a Bugatti or is he too scared to drive one?

Dan November 15, 2007 at 5:42 pm

The Veyron is pretty comfortable to drive at 253mph… except the world around you look like a blur :)

and Top Gear ftw!

Mike November 16, 2007 at 11:13 am

I think we all know now that John is fearless.. He was an Ultimate Fighter Contender at one point(it says so in his About page) and he is not afraid of Google!

Badi Jones November 15, 2007 at 5:33 pm

Yeah. My 1991 Olds Cutlass Supreme would take both of them out.

Alissa November 15, 2007 at 6:06 pm

That is unreal John

worknplay November 15, 2007 at 6:14 pm

very cool video but I guess thats why the jet costs 45 m and the car 1.7 m

johnny card November 15, 2007 at 6:14 pm

now that was a awesome race. jc really has nothing better to do that to sit around and amuse himself and me, thxs.

Casey November 15, 2007 at 6:23 pm

No offense, cool video, but I’m getting a bit bored of the off-topic posts recently. It seems as if all of it has been useless information. I haven’t seen a post about making money online since last week. I’m getting hungry!

svakanda November 15, 2007 at 6:37 pm

The real question is….Is John Chow getting bored of MAKING money? You know Johnny…I’m always here to support you if you find yourself in sucha position! :P

Domtan November 15, 2007 at 7:42 pm

The Blog World Expo may be partially to blame, rather than Mr. Chow himself.

Bradley November 15, 2007 at 6:54 pm

Blog Contests November 15, 2007 at 7:17 pm

So who won? YouTube is waaaay too slow from where I live

Domtan November 15, 2007 at 7:30 pm

The Jet won, predictably.

Mike Huang November 15, 2007 at 7:32 pm

Wow John, another one of your interesting posts :)

I love this videos you find!

Satish S November 15, 2007 at 7:33 pm

I love TG!! Woot woot!

Bedroom Furniture November 16, 2007 at 1:33 am

Satish S November 16, 2007 at 6:52 pm

I’m totally like Obelix!! Think of eating all day and inadvertently get your work done too!!

Jeff B November 15, 2007 at 8:29 pm

F**ck an A that was AWESOME…

Chris Jacobson November 15, 2007 at 8:54 pm

John, when are you going to buy a fighter jet?

Mike November 15, 2007 at 9:11 pm

That was a pretty sweet race!

James Wilcox November 15, 2007 at 9:50 pm

I don’t think any car is worth spending nearly 2 million USD on since after you drive it off the lot it loses a third of the value…but to each his own.

Satish S November 16, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Er… would you buy the Veyron just to resell it???
I would keep it as long as the nuts and bolts hold it together! Even if i go bankrupt!

Home Recording November 15, 2007 at 10:32 pm

What a video! The time has come to compare apples with orranges!

bloggernoob November 15, 2007 at 11:44 pm

i feel the need…the need for speed

Free e-book membership site November 16, 2007 at 12:40 am

I’ve seen this one. The car is fast, but not fast enough

James November 16, 2007 at 2:06 am

This is so unfair, I though the jet would have to land on the finish line, this is too easy for a jet if it doesn’t have to be back on the road!

ONwebCHECK November 16, 2007 at 2:08 am

WOW! What a CAR! :)

Mr Daz November 16, 2007 at 2:58 am

That’s the first time the Veyron lost a challenge on Top Gear, and they blamed Hammond for it. Personally I think he bottled it in the turn, if they’d given the car to the Stig, their tame racing driver, the Euro Fighter may have had a closer race.

James November 16, 2007 at 4:44 am

I think the jet needed to have landed to make it fair.

Mr. Rajawang November 16, 2007 at 5:28 am

I agree with you james..

Adi November 16, 2007 at 6:09 am

It was going too fast to land -.- November 16, 2007 at 5:53 am

Funny thing that the video gets more comments here on John Chow (49 right now) than on Youtube (3).

Tyler November 16, 2007 at 6:47 am

It’s just for fun, guys, not a end-all race to see which is best.

It’s funny how even after watching videos like this, I don’t want a veyron :P I’d like to sit or drive in one some time, but it’s too over hyped in my opinion. Yes, it’s fast. But the looks don’t appeal to me, and although the waiting list is like 3 years to get one, everyone knows about them…

I would like a jet, however, if anyone has one laying around for a cheap price…

Interwebhunt November 16, 2007 at 10:15 am

I’ve decided after watching this video that my next car will in fact be a jet fighter. Not only can you outrace a veylon you can blow the crap out of rush hour traffic. Sweet.

MoneyNing November 16, 2007 at 10:39 am

I thought about that too but since it’s slow to start and I live 1.2 miles from work, it is no good for me :) November 16, 2007 at 11:00 am

Yep, Bugattis definitely own

Tyler November 16, 2007 at 11:03 am

At full throttle it gets 2.1 mpg! Full throttle is 487 kph however…

Etienne Teo November 16, 2007 at 11:38 am

I am still with the F-18, getting it to super sonic speed is just crazy.

Nick - road2graduation November 16, 2007 at 2:25 pm

Really good video – saw this originally a couple of months ago on Top Gear in the UK. The rest of the show was along the same line too. November 17, 2007 at 4:48 pm

really awesome video, i got that on my blog also and other cool bugatti videos you guys should check it out.

Widescreen Wallpapers November 19, 2007 at 1:40 pm

There was a video floating around the internet with a Lingenfelter Corvette vs F-18 Jet and the corvette kept up with him until he got off the ground. Just google it and I’m sure you’ll find it.
