CES 2008 - Sound Chamber of Doom
One of the booth I alway check out at CES belongs to Alpine. They make a new demo car every year just for the CES. However, this year there was no car. Instead, they made a boat to promote their new marine line of amps and speaker.
One item that Alpine has new at their booth this year was the sound chamber of doom. The object is to step into the chamber and see how long you can last with 16 Alpine subwoofers pumping over 150dB of sound at you. This is loud enough to make you go deaf within seconds if you don’t wear ear protection. Even with protection, the pressure buildup is incredible. You put your thumb on the button. The subwoofers will play and will stop the instant you release the button. How long did we last? Watch the video and find out.

While it doesn’t look much on video I know for a fact it would be completely extreme!

Reply to this commentHaving a “sound chamber of doom” is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of (no pun intended)! Did they also have a “hit me over the skull repeatedly with a baseball bat” room? Is Alpine begging to be sued?
Reply to this commentAt those kind of sound levels you can do PERMANENT damage to your hearing VERY quickly. However, the hearing loss isn’t the worst part. Nope. Not by a long shot. Almost everyone has experienced ringing in the ear (after a concert, for example); but what happens if it doesn’t go away? It’s called tinnitus — and it’s one of the worst things that can happen to a person (and, unfortunately, I speak from experience). Tinnitus can result from a single exposure to a very loud noise or over time (for example, from listening to an iPod too loudly) and there is no cure.
Protect your hearing. Wear earplugs when needed and avoid extremely loud noise entirely (for more info, visit http://www.ata.org). If you take my simple advice, you’ll never have to know how much pain I just saved you.
