CHASING 250 MPH: The World’s Fastest Cars Tested

How to make $593 in less than one hour

Autocar has posted every guy’s dream – take nine of the fastest cars in the world, find a nice long piece of straight road, like Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track in northern Germany, and pin the gas pedal until you reach the top speed. The cars tested were:

  • Bugatti Veyron EB16.4
  • Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
  • Lamborghini Murciélago LP640
  • Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
  • Aston Martin Vanquish S
  • Porsche 911 Turbo
  • Chevrolet Corvette Z06
  • Dodge Viper SRT-10
  • Ford GT

Anyone who knows anything about cars will have no problems predicting the winner of this test. The Bugatti Veyron EB16.4 simply destroyed the competition. 0 to 62mph is 2.5 seconds, 0 to 124mph in 7.4 seconds, 0 to 186mph in 19.2 second. Top speed: 250mph (249.84mph, to be exact). The Veyron beat the second place Ferrari 599 GTB to 186mph by 11.7 seconds.

While the Bugatti Veyron EB16.4 maybe the fastest car in this test, it’s also the most expensive car at over $1 million. I’m still waiting for Bugatti to invite me for a test drive. You can read the full article here.

Here’s a little video demoing the acceleration of the Bugatti supercar.

No surprise the Veyron decimated the competition, that car is an engineering and design masterpiece. I can’t imagine driving something at 400km, absolutely incredible.

Such a gorgeous car to. I know I’d wrap it around a telephone pole at 250mph, but it’d be the best 20 seconds of my life, lol.

Thanks for this one John, I love reading about the Veyron, fell in love with it the moment it came out.

Yes, because driving in a straight line, up to 60 MPh, is the most important indication of performance.

Let’s see what happens when they *gasp* throw some TURNS into this testing… So far nobody has done that. I’m sure VW doesn’t want the car being known for anything other than the fact that it is an engineering masterpiece.

Hey! Haven’t you heard? Straight is great! :)

Regardless, I’d take a Veyron any day!

I would have liked to see them throw a Koenigsegg CCX in there too…I think it’s a good competitor to this lineup…definately ahead of the Viper, GT, and Corvette at least.

While the performance figures of the Veyron are certainly impressive, I’d like to see what Lamborghini or some other manufacturer could do with a $1 million price tag. Frankly, if the Bugatti didn’t walk all over the rest of the field, I’d wonder where that money was going.

I find the car somewhat ugly, to be honest, but that’s just personal preference.

I live in the OC (Orange County), Southern California. My wife and I were leaving Fashion Island (Newport Beach) a couple of weeks ago and she noticed a car being unloaded from a trailer. It isn’t uncommon for the mall to have cars on display so I took a closer look – it was a Veyron. I went over to see it as a guy was parking it. Turns out he was taking delivery of it, he had just bought it from a Lambo dealer in Vegas. Get this, when I told him it was a beautiful car (which it is, you have to see it in person) he said, “Yeah, I don’t fit in it too well but my wife likes to drive it so I got it for her”. The amount of wealth around here is staggering at times.

I hate that teenagers driving an NSX in OC is regular. But then again, it allows me to charge more for my videography and photography services because of the wealth!

this is not a good test at all.. those are NOT the most fast cars. they just are missing key cars and put shitty substitutes in they’re place.

where is the carrara gt (the put a 911 turbo in its place HAHA)

where is the Ferrari Enzo

where is the Koenigsegg?

and so on…

Crap, John! I was just about to post this. Great story, but definitely some cars missing from this comparo (Pagani, Zonda, etc. in addition to those already mentioned, woulda been cool too). Regardless, a good little read…even sans the twisties.

This must have been skewed towards North American audience, hence the missing Koenigsegg, Pagoni, etc. and the addition of the Viper and Corvette.

John,

Just wondering, what is your favorite car? Do you actually own it yet? I’m a car enthusiast also who’s had an NSX. My goal is to get a 360 spider in the next few years but the NSX keeps calling me back!

yeah, the veyron is quick but it’s not the fastest. The callaway sledgehammer corvette was clocked at 254mph on street tires. But i don’t know just how “production” this car was though, it was an EXTREMELY limited(as in only 1 was ordered) option. Plus it sold for 200,000 at barrett-jackson last year. So for less than 1/5 the price and even faster(not by much) i’d definately take the ‘vette.
