China Retaliates Against The US

written by John Chow on May 19th, 2006

While at the China Visa office yesterday to pick up my Visa, I came across a notice next to the pick up windows written in both Chinese and English. The English part says

In retaliation to the US increasing the cost of a Visa to Chinese citizens to $100, we will be increasing our Visa cost to US citizens.

Now retaliation is a very strong word and one might say the person who translated that message use the wrong word – he really meant to use “In response”. However, when dealing with China, you never know! I’m wouldn’t have been surprised if they add “So there!” at the end.

Blame it on the translators. I think they translated it directly - as they always do. Just as you translate something on Babelfish, the end result may seem too formal, harsh or doesn’t make sense in context.

“In Retaliation to John, we will close our office and go for lunch as he tries to pick up his VISA. We will also be late coming back.”

LOL!
