Copy & Paste – Mac Vs. PC

written by John Chow on November 4, 2008

How one lazy bum made $176,697.50

It’s time for another Mac vs. PC video podcast. Today, we’ll be showing the difference in how copy and paste is done between a Mac and a PC. Ashley will show how to copy some text from a web page and then paste it into a text file on her desktop. Then I will show how to do the same thing with a Mac.

After making this video, Ashley told me she wants a new MacBook Pro. If any company wants to send her one as part of some promotion, she’ll be really grateful. Email me if you want to give Ashley (or me) a new MacBook. Hey, if you don’t ask, you don’t get!

I always love MAC! Simple and innovative yet elegant!
Well John, may I ask you for a new MacBook Pro? :) If I didn’t ask, I won’t get it, will I?

Sara November 4, 2008 at 9:55 am

Wow, that was very helpful. Thanks. I think I’m going to get a Macbook besides the dell i was begging my mother for for christmas.

“Hello, I’m John Chow and I’m a Mac.” lol

Kevin November 4, 2008 at 12:50 pm

What a good joke! I like it!

Tushar Dhoot November 4, 2008 at 4:23 pm

It’d be even more funny if Shoemoney came on and said “I’m Shoemoney, and I’m a PC”.

:)

yeh, gadgetadvisor is really a nice site to get tech updates.
I want mac too – send me also :D

Kok Choon November 4, 2008 at 11:43 am

I never use Mac before, I am outdated!

Too bad Bill just don’t seems to keep up :( I will turn to Mac eventually, much cooler~!

Alex at Net-Entrepreneur.com November 4, 2008 at 3:28 pm

I think it’s inevitable…

Timeless Lessons November 7, 2008 at 8:35 am

Did that 6 months ago and never looked back :)

Geiger November 4, 2008 at 1:30 pm

Highlight and hit Ctrl-C to copy.
Click in target document and Ctrl-V to paste.

Not quite as informative as the hibernation post.

Abdul November 6, 2008 at 11:01 pm

yea, that’s the first thing I thought of when I saw the title but then I knew nothing of the Mac!

PPC Case Study November 4, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Haha, can i have a Macbook Pro too John? =)

Ben Pei November 8, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Lol count me in too..

Mike November 4, 2008 at 9:31 am

Cool post..I love my mac…a lot more functionality than the PC!!!!

Mike Henry November 4, 2008 at 9:51 am

In some respects it is, depending on your tasks. A stock mac will beat a PC on graphic manipulation & video tasks, but we rock the spreadsheet!

Ruchir Chawdhry November 4, 2008 at 9:35 am

Why are you shifting your focus to tech all of a sudden?

Bryn Youngblut November 4, 2008 at 9:38 am

Opposed too …what’s for lunch?

John Chow November 4, 2008 at 12:42 pm

What is for lunch anyway? That’s always a hard question.

Bryn Youngblut November 4, 2008 at 9:38 am

You know you could just buy her one for christmas….but who doesn’t love free stuff.

Mike Henry November 4, 2008 at 9:48 am

Neat trick.

Jack November 4, 2008 at 10:01 am

I’m thinking about having a workstation around a PC Desktop, with a macbook pro on the side for web design, class work and travel. The only hurdles I’m having trouble with lately are people who think I should go all mac, and whether to drop my Blackberry for an iPhone. It’s not an easy decision.

Mario November 4, 2008 at 10:01 am

I love PC and i do not care if i want 5 seconds more
than mac to copy and paste.

Mario

Kok Choon November 4, 2008 at 11:45 am

Just find some good tool and you can do things similar…

The point is – Mac is cooler! At least now everyone wants One, well except you.

Paul Fisher November 4, 2008 at 10:05 am

This is very timely for me. I’ve just been considering a Macbook purchase after 10+ Windows years. I’m scared – I know Window’s inside out, but I just can’t ignore the number of people recommending Mac to me…

Dot_Commie November 4, 2008 at 10:34 am

Umm.. just use “Ctrl C” to copy and “Ctrl V” to paste on the PC. Jesus, could you perfor that task any harder?

John Chow November 4, 2008 at 10:53 am

Hitting Ctrl C takes two hands. Right clicks only takes one. Then again, they both take about the same amount of time so do whichever you want. :)

Matt November 4, 2008 at 11:16 am

LOL, you must have very small fingers to need to use two hands to do “Ctrl C” !

Amazingly I can use my left hand to press both the “Left Ctrl” and “C” at the same time.

Pressing Ctrl + C and the Ctrl + V takes about 1-2 seconds total, oh there is also Ctrl S for save.

Also John, you need to edit and correct your other anti Windows post :http://www.johnchow.com/hibernation-mac-vs-pc/

Which is incorrect, read the comments, and use “Sleep” not Hibernate.

JP @ Tickerwatcher November 4, 2008 at 3:17 pm

thanks for the tip john

Tushar Dhoot November 4, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Yea, lol…

I can do both easily with one hand.

Timeless Lessons November 7, 2008 at 8:36 am

nice one John

Income Hitter November 4, 2008 at 10:57 am

I can’t live without CTRL + C and CTRL + V..

Ben Pei November 8, 2008 at 7:24 pm

You’re right dude.. make copy and paste so easy..

Nate Cleveland November 4, 2008 at 11:07 am

That’s such a cool feature I didn’t even know existed on Mac’s – Thanks for the video on that John + Ashley. I think it’s preferable to using ctrl + c or right clicking.

Pushkar Arora November 4, 2008 at 11:09 am

Thanks for the Mac tutorial, never knew that. I just bought a Macbook Pro 2.5 Ghz some days back and I am really enjoying working on it..

netlobo.com November 4, 2008 at 11:15 am

Not all PCs suck at copy and paste like this. This is a function of the operating system you use. Windows, of course, is not very intuitive in many areas of it’s User Interface and that is why I (and many others) choose to go with something like Ubuntu or another flavor of Linux if you own a PC. Ubuntu has done this kind of copy & paste for as long as i can remember.

If you are considering purchasing a Mac just to get some UI improvements or be different from the mainstream then download the latest Ubuntu Live CD and give Ubuntu a try. You can boot off the CD without installing Ubuntu so you can try it risk free. If you like it you can even install it alongside windows so you can choose to boot into Windows or Ubuntu when you turn on your computer.

Steve Moyer November 4, 2008 at 11:39 am

Yep … there’s even a Mac theme and a “dock”. My daughter’s laptop boots Windows Vista and Ubuntu, but everyone thinks it’s a Hackintosh (they never see Vista because she quit using it).

MoneyBlog November 4, 2008 at 12:09 pm

Where can I find ‘Ubuntu Live CD’???

Steve Moyer November 4, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Well … assuming you want to build a desktop computer, here is the download page. The desktop version is a live CD with a short-cut to the installer on the desktop.

Steve Moyer November 4, 2008 at 12:23 pm

Okay … so you want the link too? ;)

UniqueBlogger November 4, 2008 at 11:15 am

Funny little video. Btw i love this part of your post :D “Email me if you want to give Ashley (or me) a new MacBook. Hey, if you don’t ask, you don’t get!”

Steve Moyer November 4, 2008 at 11:37 am

Dragging the text to the desktop also creates a new file using Linux with a Gnome desktop … I also tried this on Windows XP and DnD works just fine as long as you have an available file. You seemed to have picked the toughest route to copy the text on the “PC”.

And why say “PC” … You should be saying that “I’m a Windows”, since Macs are also PCs (with some extra dollars in the price tag to account for them also being pop art).

ZK@WebTrafficROI November 4, 2008 at 11:44 am

Hi I am Mac :)

ZK@WebTrafficROI November 4, 2008 at 11:46 am

Hi , I am Mac :)

GamingBooth November 4, 2008 at 12:41 pm

lol…I wish I could just ask companies to give me and get one (which I am sure you and Ashley will). Nice little video :)

OnlineGodfather November 4, 2008 at 1:05 pm

I love MACs :D They are really something special

Rekzai November 4, 2008 at 1:34 pm

No one cares.

Kat Argonza November 4, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Aha! Macbooks really are better. I am a mac – specifically a macbook air!

JP @ Tickerwatcher November 4, 2008 at 3:20 pm

macbooks i will admit are pretty sweet looking – but i think im more of a pc guy – but if you want to convert me sent me a macbook – like john said you gotta ask

Sohail November 4, 2008 at 4:07 pm

PC here……..simple and easy to use ;)

Tushar Dhoot November 4, 2008 at 4:26 pm

I’m really interested to see if Ashley get’s the mac or not. It’d really be a sign of the power of Chow…because no offense, but her blog is updated once every 2 months or so, so if she does get the mac, it has to be because of you.

Keral Patel November 4, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Yeah and if some more companies want to send Mac’s then they can also contact me from my blog. :D

BusinessX November 4, 2008 at 9:50 pm

As a PC, Mac is looking better and better.

James November 5, 2008 at 1:53 am

THAT, is awesome. I want a mac! But I’ll keep my PC for games :)

Dom November 5, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Heh, im using debian linux and all I have to do is drag and drop as well. Not to mention my os costs $0. If you want eyecandy, just get compiz

ExclusiveCashTactics November 6, 2008 at 1:48 am
