Dot Com Pho – 4/26/2008

written by John Chow on April 26, 2008

Make Money!

After last week’s super sized Dot Com Pho, things got back to normal this week with a more modest eight people. The owner of Pho Lan (where Dot Com Pho is held) looked very relieved that we didn’t try to take over his restaurant.

For this week’s episode of Dot Com Pho, we discussed Stephen’s new Hackintosh, my upcoming trip to Asia, WordPress Camp, Bob Buskirk’s boring life, those damn Mongolians and a whole lot more. We also torture test the new Corsair 32GB USB flash drive and tried out the Gadget of the Week. Plus, we welcome Microsoft as a new Dot Com Pho sponsor.

No, we really are this weird.

Chris Jacobson April 26, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Nice shirt! lol

Ed Lau April 26, 2008 at 8:31 pm

BTW, we’re trying to start a beef with Bob. It’s like we’re Tupac and he’s Biggie.

Stephen April 26, 2008 at 8:42 pm

I thought we had a “Beef” with John Cow? :D

Michael Kwan April 27, 2008 at 11:04 pm

I don’t want to die.

Zach Bass April 26, 2008 at 8:43 pm

For a few hundred dollars more, you could have a motorcade. Black out all the windows and have a contest to guess which car you’re in.
Have a great trip, zach

John Chow April 27, 2008 at 8:57 am

As cool as that sound, I think it would attract more attention than the S600.

Zach Bass April 27, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Oh. I thought that was the point? So, then you probably think flags attached to the bumpers is out as well?

Chris Jacobson April 26, 2008 at 8:46 pm

I noticed you spelled Corsair wrong in the video, John. I’m sure your sponsor is happy about that.

John Chow April 26, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Oh well. We’ll make it up to them next week.

Chris Jacobson April 26, 2008 at 9:06 pm

You should send me a 32gb flash drive for pointing that out. k, thanks.

John Chow April 26, 2008 at 10:52 pm

The flash drive is only for people who attended Dot Com Pho.

Shawn Knight April 26, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Damn Bob, get a life!!

Paul Piotrowski April 26, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Mongorians! That part was pretty funny. :)

Leo April 27, 2008 at 4:49 am

God Damn Mongorians!
How come every time us Chinese build a sheety wall those damn Mongorians have to tear it down!

Paul Piotrowski April 27, 2008 at 11:21 am

ROFL…

Where is that from… it’s so funny…

Michael Kwan April 27, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Benny April 26, 2008 at 9:41 pm

damn, john! how can you guys do that to that poor flash drive. Great video had a good laugh lol. keep it up

Tim April 26, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Is anyone allowed to attend the lunch.

John Chow April 26, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Only if they know the secret password.

Yes, anyone is welcome to join us for Dot Com Pho. Just let one of us know before hand.

Paul Piotrowski April 27, 2008 at 12:29 am

Is it always Dot Com Pho?

Is it ever Dot Com Sushi, or Dot Com Boston Pizza, or Dot Com Something else? Nothing against Pho, just wondering if the venue ever changes.

Ed Lau April 27, 2008 at 1:10 am

Yes, we have had Dot Com Dim Sum, Dot Com Burger Day, Dot Com Tandori…

Paul Piotrowski April 27, 2008 at 3:42 am

Woo, when’s the next Dot Com Burger Day?

And do you guys seriously give out these “prizes” like the flash drives and stuff, or is that just a joke like John’s UFC thing?

Not that the prizes are the biggest reason to come, but I’m just wondering if you actually did score these promo items from the manufacturers like that.

I can just imagine telling Logitech “Hey, give me some hardware, I’m going out for Pho with my friends, and i’ll give you free exposure if you hook all of us up with some keyboards!” :)

It’s just Evil enough to actually work.

John Chow April 27, 2008 at 8:21 am

You have to be a regular Pho goer to get free stuff. We don’t allow hit and run.

Paul Piotrowski April 27, 2008 at 10:33 am

I realized that when I asked the question I would sound like I’m asking because I’d want to come with the intention of getting something for free, but that’s not my intention.

If I was to come, I’d do it to socialize with some local fellow bloggers. I was just wondering if the prize giveaway thing was for real because I’m curious about how manufacturers see the blogosphere as far as advertising goes.

I think it’s a pretty brilliant move for them to do this, I just didn’t know if it was for real or another “inside joke” like the Panda thing or the UFC thing, etc. So when you guys talked about the LCD panels last time, the regulars we see in the video’s all the time actually got them for free eh? That’s sweet.

John you never cease to amaze me with your clever ways. :)

david cheong April 27, 2008 at 11:24 am

Dot com dim sum is really nice one :) Wonder who open the website dot com dim sum dot com. Hmm.. too many dot here. Nice video, funny also.

Michael Kwan April 27, 2008 at 11:12 pm

I have dotcompho.com, because whether we go out for burgers, dim sum or whatever, the mainstay will always be pho.

Mike Huang April 26, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Is it me or does it look like Stephen has a hicky on his neck when he’s talking about his “HACKINTOSH” :P

-Mike

Stephen April 27, 2008 at 1:14 am

It happens

Leo April 27, 2008 at 4:47 am

Unfortunately for Stephen, it’s merely a result of his suction cup fetish.

iPhone in Canada April 27, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Ouch! Man, I love getting free stuff from Dot Com Pho.

Fitness Site April 27, 2008 at 12:32 am

where can I see microsoft sponsoring the pho

Stephen April 27, 2008 at 1:17 am

Have you heard of the Microsoft ZUNE?

joshuaun April 27, 2008 at 5:05 am

Hackintosh?????why sound like Macintosh??????hehehee

MrAchievement.com (Stanley Bronstein) April 27, 2008 at 5:44 am

 :?: Question for Mr. Bronstein Esq. , CPA, Author & Pro Motivational Speaker ~ Love Phoenix AZ however the 110 degrees can be a bit too much in June! But if the Arizona Biltmore said I could come stay a couple nights for “free” – I am there!! BTW- know any healthcare attorneys who could use an excellent Legal Nurse Consultant to subcontract some of their medical/legal case review work out to? ~ Never hurts to ask…… right?

Oh man! I’ve been missing a lot of this, I wonder when can I attend.

Liane April 27, 2008 at 6:38 am

How did you got Microsoft to sponsor? i’ll be more amazed if it’s how Microsoft got you to sponsor….

So which is which?

John Chow April 27, 2008 at 8:23 am

Why would we sponsor Microsoft? That would make no sense what so ever.

david cheong April 27, 2008 at 11:27 am

But the most like one is the cola for john chow :) thats a nice one.

Ed Lau April 27, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Microsoft, one of the world’s largest corporations, needs sponsorship from a bunch of dudes eating noodles.

Terry Tay April 27, 2008 at 8:44 pm

Ok, did Microsoft sponsor and if so How does Microsoft come to sponsor Dot Com Pho? Just curious.
~Terry

Liane April 27, 2008 at 6:42 am

And yeah, nice shirt. Can I get one of those????

Tyler Ingram April 27, 2008 at 9:10 am

Didn’t Stephen already run over that Corsair drive for his review? I remember seeing his car on top of it ;) I take it that was your Acura driving over it this time John?

So where and what time is the next dot com pho.. and do you have to have pho experience prior to going? lol

John Chow April 27, 2008 at 10:05 am

Dot Com Pho happens every Saturday, unless we’re at some trade event. For newbie Pho’er we recommend the #10.

Tyler Ingram April 28, 2008 at 9:09 am

Is that the one with Tripe?

John Chow April 28, 2008 at 1:49 pm

No, that’s a #12. The #10 is well done flanks and rare steak.

Sha April 27, 2008 at 9:17 am

I love how you lot were putting sauce & whatnot into the water. Me & some of my cousins used to do that when we were kids & went to restaurants. It was strangely fun.

jim April 27, 2008 at 9:23 am

Great Post!

Asia'h Epperson April 27, 2008 at 10:22 am

Thanks for the post…I’ve always wanted to go to Asia, but it seems like something always comes up during the planning stage. One of these days, I’ll just have to up and go!

John Hesston April 27, 2008 at 10:26 am

Dot Com Pho sounds yummy. Is this the vietnamese noodle?

Paul Piotrowski April 27, 2008 at 10:35 am

I’ve never had Pho, but I always see it at the food court in the malls. Now I’m super tempted to try it. I was like that with Sushi too…never tried it for a long time, and then got super addicted to it.

I’ll stay away from tripe though, even though I have had it before when I was a little kid. I don’t like the chewyness of it.

Max April 27, 2008 at 10:46 am

I can just imagine telling Logitech “Hey, give me some hardware, I’m going out for Pho with my friends, and i’ll give you free

John Chow April 27, 2008 at 1:16 pm

That’s pretty much what I do.

Dave from Welcome Back Rosenthal April 27, 2008 at 1:15 pm

Watching Western Asian guys mock Eastern Asian guys was SURREAL.

And it was funny as hell when the USB drive comes out of the torture bath and you cut to it immediately being put under a car.

These episodes are getting weirder.

Infogle April 27, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Honestly… speaking making fun of someone’s economy is not good at all… and this was the only part which i didn’t liked on this Pho Video. Hope you take this in consideration

John Chow April 27, 2008 at 2:07 pm

We’re not making fun of the economy. We’re just highlighting the exchange rate difference. China has more Millionaires (and Billionaires) than Canada!

Ms. Wen April 27, 2008 at 5:18 pm

  When can I move then?

Someone should have ate the drive for dessert. Your flip takes really nice video. I could do without the cow stomach lining though.
