Dot Com Pho – Five Spice And Happy Pho Edition

This episode of Dot Com Pho is the first to be filmed on the new Panasonic Lumix GF2 digital camera and the first to be processed in 1080P resolution. I have to say, it’s the sharpest looking Dot Com Pho video ever. You can compare the quality difference with the Vancouver Dot Com Pho video.

Once again, we met up in Seattle’s International District to sample the great food at Thanh Vi. Instead of Pho, I decided to try out the Thanh Vi five spice chicken on rice. I’m glad I did because it was fantastic. The skin was crispy and full of flavor and the meat inside was juicy and tender. The rice was nice and firm and the dipping sauce just kicked everything up another notch.

Thanh Vi’s menu is full of dishes you wouldn’t find in a typical Pho restaurant and I’m just starting to explore them. Only one other person made it to this week’s meetup. Hopefully, we’ll get more next week. Anyone is welcome to join us for Dot Com Pho. Follow me on Twitter to find the time and location of the next one.

Dot Com Pho Vancouver: Happy Pho Edition

The Vancouver Dot Com Pho crew have been going to a place that they like to call “Happy Pho” for some time, but now it looks like the name is official! Also, what does Minna Van have to do with it? All this and more and this week’s video!

The food looks really good. I also like spicy chicken. My favorite is General Tso’s Chicken. I know it’s not the same thing, but it’s def. spicy and tastes good. What kind of flavoring does that chicken that you ate have? And the video looks amazing and very high quality. 🙂

    1. John Chow says:

I ordered the chicken med, which wasn’t spicy at all but very tasty. Next time, I’m going to tell them to turn up the heat!

      1. John first thing which I noticed after pressing the button of play is sharp and clear colour of video.

I though this one is having 720 res but surprised to see that it is at 360.

        Awesome quality.

        1. John Chow says:

You want to see awesome, turn on 1080P and watch it in full screen. 🙂

          1. Hey John,

The 1080 loads for too long and the difference is negligible compared to 720.

            The colors do look good.

          2. Abhik says:

            Yeah!! I did exactly that..
Looks awesome on a 1280×1024 monitor.

          3. I am sure loading this video to youtube took too much time.

I am sure now you are using all RAM of your apple computer.

          4. PPC Ian says:

John, it is truly awesome! 🙂 the quality is unparalleled, the best dot com pho video quality ever!

    2. I wonder what John could do with just a food blog?

      1. Yes, this kind of wondering is being expressed quite often. He could probably do quite well but he doesn’t want to be restricted to such a narrow subject I think.

  2. WTF says:

goddamn all these food posts really make me hungry… and I just ate!!! 😛 5 spice chicken looks ace.

    great video, looks really good,

  3. I think “THE” in front of subaruguru.com is really confusing one ….

Not a good selection in point of domain I think.

    1. Hey ZK,

Maybe the domain name without the definite article wasn’t available. Normally the words like “the” are ignored by the search engines to a large degree.

      1. I know … but however maximum time people will forget THE word to add to domain … while they go manually.

        Imagine … JohnChow.Com and TheJohncChow.Com

        1. That’s true. Nobody will think of adding the “the” in front. If they get there through a link then it won’t be any problem. He’ll just have to keep on stressing the “the” until they get it.

  4. Fazal Mayar says:

good quality im impressed, as for me, nothing beat spicy grilled chicken!

    1. We got same choice Fazal …

Spicy Grilled Chicken … yuuuu mmmm Mouth watering.

      1. PPC Ian says:

I agree! Very tasty indeed. A good option to try instead of the normal pho.

  5. Lakhyajyoti says:

    Awesome videos.Enjoyed John.

  6. Hey John,

Michael’s video is fun with Ed Lau’s opinions about NHL hockey fans and soccer fans in Vancouver. By the way the owner of the Pho on Main Street, Brian gave you the credit for the name Happy Pho which he now officially adopted.

I have finally uploaded my video from the last Vancouver Pho showing Michael reviewing Breffo Spider Podium Tablet and Stephen showing Shot Gun Directional Condenser Microphone.

You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bKxVrj_1zY

    1. Stephen says:

This is actually the first time Dot Com Pho was ever at Happy Pho. Happy Pho was named after Happy Brian…

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi6IvezsAEA

This is the Happy Pho Origin Story.

      1. Hey Stephen,

Thanks for the clarification. It’s interesting that last Saturday Brian himself said that the name of Happy Pho was adopted because of John insisting on calling the place that way.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that John Chow was the first one to come up with it. But he is being given credit now by Brian and may enter the history books as the person who coined the name.

In any case, I think that it is because of John’s clout that the name was adopted, regardless of who first mentioned it.

    2. voice clarity is really poor in Michael video.

I think he should consider some external mic.

      1. Michael Kwan says:

I shot using the Flip Mino HD, which doesn’t have an external mic input. I thought about buying the adapter to go with my Olympus E-PL1 (same Micro Four-Thirds format as John’s GF2), but would invest in a new lens first.

        1. Stephen says:

This is basically Michael’s camera (mine is an E-P2) with a proper mic and the lens he wants…

  7. Abhik says:

WOW!! The video is of awesome quality.. So clear and crisp.

    1. quality is simply amazing even in 360

  8. Dan says:

About the video… I kept noticing when John was talking at the table, the background was going from blurry to focused constantly. I don’t think I would have noticed it either way but with it constantly changing I found it distracting.

    1. John Chow says:

Ya, I’m still learning the camera. I should have put the focus on full manual instead of auto. Will do that for future episodes.

      1. So are the differences in the focusing simple the camera trying to adjust for different light conditions etc?

        1. John Chow says:

It’s trying to adjust to the movements behind me. If I had it on full manual, I could have locked the focus and it would have been perfect.

          1. Hey John,

I hope that you’ll bring the camera the next time you go to the Dot Com Pho in Vancouver. I think that we all want to get a closer look at it and you can tell us about all the tricks that you’ve learned to do with it.

That will be a great gadget of the month.

    2. Dan you got sharp eyes …

  9. fas says:

All dot com meets make me hungry.

    1. Allen Walker says:

All John’s food blog posts make me hungry. 😛 Lol.

    2. Not all dot com meets.

Basically it is dot com pho

      1. Hey ZK,

They are lunch meetings, usually involving pho but not always.

The comments above from Fas and Allan aren’t very profound. Who cares if looking at food makes them hungry?

Imagine if everybody commented that way. Kind of useless, wouldn’t you say?

  10. Hi John look awesome and the food looks really good. Nice food and nice camera. LOL

    1. yes this is new baby of John and I am sure in coming days all video will be shoot by this and yes images too.

  11. Ricky Ahuja says:

So much for my diet. Great stuff John.

  12. Justin says:

The video is extremely clear and looks very good. We just bought a Sony video camera last month. Maybe we should have waited and got the Panasonic.

  13. I have to ask how did the conversation about magnets under the skin get started? It seemed really interesting although I had trouble getting the video to load and stay running, but who started that as a conversation opener anyway? Neat topic 🙂

    1. Michael Kwan says:

Aaron started it after Moneca was saying how easy it was for her to lose her Amega Magic Wand. Aaron then suggested that it should be permanently implanted so you’d never lose it.

      1. Yes, it was a fun conversation. I guess for some people having things under their skin is no problem. I can’t imagine putting up with it though.

  14. christina says:
