Dot Com Pho – Flip Flap Edition

written by John Chow on June 14, 2008

Make money with YouTube

After being away for a month, it’s good to be back at Dot Com Pho. A lot has changed since the last Dot Com Pho. The place was very busy and we had to wait a bit for our table. A big congrats to Pho Lan for taking second place for the Best Pho of Richmond award.

When I was away, Stephen Fung took over the filming of Dot Com Pho. Now that I’m back, he still wants to continue. Therefore, you now have two episodes of Dot Com Pho to enjoy. I’ll let you decide which one is better.

On today’s Flip Flap edition of Dot Com Pho, we have lots of Flip Videos, Flip Video wannabes, a Flip Flap, dot com dessert and a $10,000 blog post. Check it out.

Welcome back to Vancouver. Another good episode of DCP.

Shanel Yang June 14, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Too funny! My boyfriend is always saying how hilarious you are. I finally watched one of your videos — this one and was cracking up when you starting dissing the RCA unit! He was right. I’ll definitely be coming back to catch more of your straight up good stuff.

what’s up with the flip? is that the best video camera?

Not JohnChow June 15, 2008 at 6:37 am

No, didn’t hear his plug for Canon? That is what I use for video and still shots.

Stephen June 16, 2008 at 9:51 am

Far from it. It’s like saying the pinto is the best car

Tyler Ingram June 14, 2008 at 6:09 pm

Glad I could be part of the DotComPho!

Tyler Ingram June 14, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Oh and help John film his new Flip Empire!

Paul Piotrowski June 15, 2008 at 3:17 am

It’s fun eh?

I gotta go again.

Germz June 14, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Wow John I envy you I wish I had a flip camera. Maybe I should be in that video, “Send it to me!” lol.

OCGolfCourse June 14, 2008 at 6:32 pm

I always wanted to ask… How is the flip camera better than everything else? I use my digital camera to do my videos at my main blog and it works pretty good so should I even look at something else?

John Chow June 14, 2008 at 6:45 pm

It isn’t better. It’s main advantage is it can film 1 hour with 2GB of memory. My Canon digital camera will only do 15 minutes with the same amount of memory. However, because of less compression, the Canon has much better video quality. The other advantage of the Flip is it looks like a video camera so people will act accordingly. When you point a digital camera at them, they assume you’re taking their picture instead of doing a video.

Pyjammez June 14, 2008 at 6:40 pm

hahah damn I love dot com pho

betshopboy June 14, 2008 at 7:43 pm

The desert that Gary was having in the video, we call it “chendol” over here.

Brendan June 14, 2008 at 9:04 pm

you should do a live webcast of dot com pho. that would be sweet!

Stephen June 15, 2008 at 7:47 am

There’s no WiFi. Pho Lan is too ghetto to have Internet

Ed Lau June 14, 2008 at 9:15 pm

FLIP FLAP!

Gigabyte even sent one to me…even though I wasn’t at Dot Com Pho.

Stephen June 15, 2008 at 9:19 am

I’m giving away Flip Flap! Flip Flap FTW and UNBRANDED iPod nano FTW!

Bryn June 14, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Cool video, this dot com pho thing seems interesting.

Ronald Su June 14, 2008 at 9:32 pm

I want a FLIP. Send it to me!

Thiago Prado June 15, 2008 at 6:50 pm

I want one too. I even sent an email to FlIP company asking for one in exchange for a review.

Abdul June 14, 2008 at 9:58 pm

You make the Flip look even cooler than it is, I think I am going to get it!

wisdom June 14, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Its been awhile..good post.

Noobpreneur June 14, 2008 at 11:00 pm

John,

That $10,000 blog post – Please explain$$… LOL

Quintin Riis June 15, 2008 at 12:15 am

I cannot fathom why he would just give you $10,000. It must be a small amount of money for him. Won’t he still have to pay taxes on the 10k?

What software do you use for editing your videos and inserting credits and the like?

Abdul June 15, 2008 at 4:30 am

I think he uses the one that comes with the iMac, prbably the free one, the functions seem to be the same

Thiago Prado June 16, 2008 at 8:54 am

he probably uses iMovie from Apple.

Stephen June 16, 2008 at 9:53 am

John uses iMovie 08. I’ve switched over to iMovie HD.

The EPIC Edit of the Flip Flap Edition is uploading as we speak. Could it be more EPIC than the last one? Stay tuned!

kellex June 15, 2008 at 10:44 am

IT’S PRONOUNCED “FUH” not “FER” or “FOE”….IT’S “FUH”!

Stephen June 15, 2008 at 11:18 am

We know. We’ve REBRANDED it for our use! Otherwise it’s just Vietnamese noodles

Paul Piotrowski June 15, 2008 at 1:55 pm

I think there is a place on Kingsway that’s called “Pho Bich Nga”.

You be the judge how to pronounce that!

John Chow June 15, 2008 at 2:37 pm

That place has gone under.

Paul Piotrowski June 15, 2008 at 4:36 pm

A friend of mine told me once that he used to think that “Pho” was a guy and he must have been really wealthy with all the different restaurants he owned around town. :)

Stephen June 15, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Pho Shizzle? That’s funny!

Stephen June 15, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Yeah. It’s been replaced by Pho Ken Eh ;)

Hollywood Encountered June 15, 2008 at 1:38 pm

I have a video camera, but I still can’t decide if I should get a Flip.

And I remember the post about Brian. Why is he giving you the money just like that though?! Did you work some evil magic on him?

Stephen June 15, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Like in my video… “It’s the End of the World as We Know It!”

fxho June 15, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Hi,

Came here via Ed’s site. I started watching your videos not long ago (two or three months at most) so my opinion might not reflect what has been done in the past. Said that…

Content: Stephen. It had more content than John’s video, not to mention in John’s the section on the flip flaps went a bit too long, in my opinion.

Caption/on-screen comment: John. Character by character caption, in my opinion, is a bit… confusing (for the lack of a better word).

Music: John. Although well intended, I found the music in Stephen’s video to be a bit of a distraction (and I am not referring to the background noise, here!).

Video: None? Both were good.

Despite the tally goes to John, in the end, I prefer Stephen’s a little bit more. Content makes up for those other “issues”. However, I think both should generate videos, as it gives different perspectives (despite being the same event. Also, in the end, those of us who watch (and could not participate) are the winners! I hope to be there one of these days.

Stephen June 15, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Thanks again. Hope you get a chance to either win Flip Flap or the “unbranded” iPod nano I’m giving away.

Affiliate Confession June 15, 2008 at 7:45 pm

I don’t know, that dessert sure didn’t look that tasty.

Affiliate Confession June 15, 2008 at 7:50 pm

John, you should give away that $10,000 you’re getting from Brian to one luck winner of the most killer contest you’ve ever had on your blog.

John Chow June 15, 2008 at 8:47 pm

You would like that, huh?

Clickusername June 15, 2008 at 9:32 pm

John, will the $10K count towards your June 2008 income? and did you say coffee is on you on the 24th?

Clickusername June 15, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Blatant plug but someone was asking about Ed Dale at a recent Dotcom Pho (might have been Yaro) – one should check out this FREEBIE: (Ed Dale’s 30 Day Challenge)

I like to see both Stephen’s and John’s videos.
One thing I noticed was the loud background noise from the non-JC DCP videos from late May. Maybe I’m biased but I think the audio on the Flip is quite good.
Check out the Youtube video I shot (with the Flip) of the Kooks at HMV. I was too far away so the video’s crap but the audio’s nice and clear. Also, check out the comment left by someone-

Stephen June 16, 2008 at 10:21 am

I have this feeling that the Flip’s audio is optimized so that when YouTube COMPRESSES it, it will still sound the same. What I hear when I edit and what I hear after YouTube upload are very different. It’s like when some of the TV shows USED to make it onto YouTube, they sounded quite poor compared to when they were on TV. It’s like that rich, well edited audio score gets turned to mung when it hits the Tubes.

YouTube definitely seems to flatten the audio which makes the background noise stand out. I think what I’ll do is try one of the filters and see if I can attenuate that for future videos.
