Dot Com Pho – Free Xbox Edition

We had a full house of ten people showed up for the Free Xbox Edition of Dot Com Pho. Then old time members Gary Ng and Greg Morgan showed up to bring the total to a table squeezing dozen. The start time was changed from 12:30 to noon because I had to head up to Whistler for dinner at Araxi right after.

For this edition of Dot Com Pho, we have not one but two videos! The first is the Dot Com Pho video. The second video was produced using the gadget of the week. Highlights include how Michael Kwan got a free Xbox, Stephen Fung playing with the Gadget of the week, the Make Money Online book iPad winner, Shakespeare plays as a tweets, the opposite of hate, the trifle couple and a bunch of other stuff. Anyone can join us for Dot Com Pho. Follow me on Twitter to find the time and location of the next one.

  1. Hi John,

I’m commenting mostly on the contents of the video.

It’s good you finally resolved the opposites question.

Does everyone agree that the opposite of both love and hate is indifference?

I tend not to agree that love and hate are the two sides of the same coin. It is deceptively kind of like that but not quite I think. Love is more than just an emotion.

Unfortunately the word is so overused that the meaning of love is kind of blurred.

Congrats to the winner of the first iPad.

Now I’m hoping to win the second one.

    1. Nigel Chua says:

I think that love is more of a decision than an emotion, the emotion element is a by-product of decisions made in love.

Also, the opposite of love AND hate can be indifference, but the opposite of love is hate. It depends on how one frames the question or statement.

      1. ffl license says:

Well put Nigel and no mention of cats. congrats to the winner.

        1. Salesfist says:

          I second that.

    1. Nigel Chua says:

Haha of course lah Ed, opposite of dog ain’t a cat. But for emotions, it’s easier to find an opposing word such as like-dislike, prefer to-prefers not to etc as in the realm of feelings and cognition, there are always options and decisions that one can make. 🙂

      I want iPad too! :))

    2. ffl license says:

Maybe so but does the dog love the cat? Or does the cat hate the dog?

    3. I agree partly because dog has no opposite but if hypothetically one had to choose an animal with opposite character then cat would be a good candidate because dogs are fiercely dependent on their masters while cats are fiercely aloof once their basic needs like food are met.

      1. Than Apple will be the opposite of orange.

Sometime we really involve in these kind of arguments.

        1. d3so says:

The opposite of cat is not-a-cat 😉

          1. Lol that seems rational 😀

          2. Bidet says:

Haha I dont think the word cat has an opposite.

        2. Lee Ka Hoong says:

People like to do opposite for something else, in face there are many things which don’t have opposite, apple or orange is a good example.

          1. Thanks Lee for supporting.

  3. Boy John your face expression was really great when you were describing hate and love.

Now you can try your hand in motivational speaker.

    1. If you have observed John in any of the videos of events at which he spoke, you would know that he is a pretty good motivational speaker too.

      1. But for that he should start try.

  4. Surprise to see that winner is not from your regular visitors.

Any way congratulation to the winner.

    1. John Chow says:

She is a regular visitor. Just not a regular commentator. Most visitors don’t comment.

      1. Next time I think you should start a contest for only commentators.

        1. d3so says:

          I agree with ZK!

Also, John, don’t forget about the ipad for those who wrote a review on your book.
When will you choose a winner for that?

          1. John Chow says:

That will be drawn at the next Dot Com Pho.

          2. PPC Ian says:

I really like ZK’s idea as well! d3so, best of luck to you and me in the next drawing. We should have better odds since that drawing is only for the people who reviewed the book. 🙂 John, another great addition of Dot Com Pho! Congrats to the winner!

        2. Lee Ka Hoong says:

lol! That might be a great idea, then John Chow blog will be burst with comments, lol! Anyway, still looking for that since I’m one of the Top Commentator. 😉

        3. I agree! Since I’m a reader of your blog John, I decided to leave my first comment here. (I don’t want to fall into the category you just mentioned above saying most readers don’t comment!)

          1. d3so says:

Do I get perks being the number 1 commentator 😉

Good luck to you as well, Ian.
I want an ipad more and more everytime I see one especially when they’re shown @ dot com
            pho. I do hope I win 🙂

          2. PPC Ian says:

I hear ya! I could really use an iPad too. I like to write blog comments on the train to and from work. Would be a lot easier on an iPad than my iPhone!
            All the best,

          3. d3so says:

The only difficult thing about the ipad is how to carry it around. Can’t wait til we can shrink objects.

  5. ffl license says:

Sounds like your table is getting crowded. You might have to start booking an entire restaurant in future.

  6. d3so says:

Is Michael going to be giving away the xbox? I need a new one because my xbox was cursed with the RRoD. I did the nylon washer fix but it only worked for about 3 months until the red lights returned. Frustrated, I did the towel trick; it worked once but once again red lights. The second time I did the towel trick the xbox would turn on, this time no lights. 🙁 Accepting money or xbox donations are highly appreciated 🙂

    1. PPC Ian says:

The xbox is another gadget I’d love to win one day. Not something I can see myself buying, but if I won one, I’d definitely get some good use out of it!

      1. d3so says:

I wouldn’t want to buy another xbox either. I’ve already spent enough money on it being games, hard drives, and xbox live memberships.
        I’d buy a ps3 if I had the money but I wouldn’t mind a free xbox either.

  7. Stephen says:

Had some questions on the exact video setup I was using for the second video. They are posted in the VIMEO notes on my video…

And the opposite of love and hate is SPOCK 🙂

  8. Missed a chance again, This is iPad Contest is still open if i buy the book now.

    1. d3so says:

Nope, but you can win one from another contest by downloading john’s ebook here:

  9. shower units says:

A nice looking toy in the 2nd video!

You’re now pretty regularly getting the table-busting numbers…..gonna have to find a bigger table!

  10. tanya says:

another entertaining pho lunch! still convinced you need a little estrogen at the table though – i will have to make the trek into the city i guess!

    1. John Chow says:

Yes we need a lot more estrogen. Come by and bring estrogen enriched friends!

  11. Interesting episode! I’m glad a woman won your contest, going along with tanya’s comment.
I really liked the quality of that camera. Seems like there were some problems with blurring from movement, but it was definitely creating a high quality image. Can’t say whether it was better than John’s camera tho 🙂

  12. Josh Rimer says:

I think you have to admit now that his camera’s quality looks a lot better than yours! lol

Those DSLR’s have make such crisp & great looking video. Pretty amazing.

  13. BTW, is Microsoft always so generous at their press conferences with giving away freebies? SY

  14. Bidet says:

Congrats on winning the free Xbox. Its a great system and has very good games on it.
