Dot Com Pho – Guerrilla Social Media Marketing Edition

written by John Chow on September 26, 2010

Secure Affiliate Marketing

This week’s Dot Com Pho heads back to basic at Happy Pho in Vancouver. When I said back to basic, I mean really back to basic. All the stuffs you expect at Dot Com Pho are here. The gadget of the week, the iPad app of the week, Ed Lau being the last person to show up, etc.

In addition to all the basic stuff, I got to review Guerrilla Social Media Marketing, a new book by my friend Shane Gibson and Jay Conrad Levinson. The original Guerrilla Marketing book sold over 20 million copies. It’ll be interesting to see how this social media version does. I was given two extra copies. If you want to try and win it, just reply to this blog post. I’ll draw the winners next week. Good luck!

Is that book good?

John Chow September 26, 2010 at 1:25 am

Yes, of course it’s good. Go buy a copy!

d3so September 26, 2010 at 1:28 am

I’m hoping it’s good.
I skim through social media books whenever I’m at a bookstore and I rarely learn anything useful from them.

Email List Building September 27, 2010 at 1:39 am

Do you ever do anything with books but skim them?

Sometimes it takes careful reading of everything and more than once too to really benefit.

Daniel Kemp September 26, 2010 at 1:42 am

Did you read all of it?

If you did, what did you learn from it?

Shally Martin September 26, 2010 at 6:45 am

From the book title, I got the feeling that it is a really good book to read. Check it on amazon @Daniel

d3so September 26, 2010 at 7:50 pm

Yeah anything with the word “guerilla” sparks interest.
I would like to read the book but don’t want to be disappointed if it’s about stuff I already know.

Email List Building September 27, 2010 at 1:36 am

Why don’t you enter in the draw? Well, I guess you did by posting as comment but with that attitude it’ll be better if someone else wins, like me.

Whoever wins is fine with me but it would be nice to win since any of John’s draws left me with empty hands.

Shane Gibson September 27, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Chapter 5 is available for free on my blog in PDF and Chapter one is available as an MP3. Try before you buy :)

Alex Dumitru September 28, 2010 at 8:38 am

I might order it. BTW, I remembered now that I paid your book twice and I think you forgot to refund me one payment. Anyway it doesn’t matter :)

d3so October 2, 2010 at 12:56 am

I think you should email John.
If you paid through paypal you can dispute it and get your money back.
It isn’t that hard to do and you’ll most likely get a response. But if you bought the book through amazon, you’ll have to deal with their customer support.

Timeshare Reviews October 2, 2010 at 2:45 am

I have never found Pay Pal to be very helpful about disputes

d3so September 26, 2010 at 1:25 am

2 hours late lol. Is that a record? What’s the longest time he’s been late?

A new giveaway to be won! I’d gladly trade the DVD I won for this book ;)

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog September 26, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Thats not at all new for Ed ..

Email List Building September 27, 2010 at 1:42 am

Well, recently he actually showed up almost on time a few times, like within half an hour. Now he lapsed back to a more usual pattern it seems.

Alex Dumitru September 28, 2010 at 8:39 am

That’s not good at all :)

d3so September 27, 2010 at 1:42 am

What else is new for Ed?
He’s such an interesting character.

Shally Martin September 27, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Haha.. yeah.. things back to normal fun way.. can’t wait to see more interesting stuff from him..

Timeshare Reviews September 30, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Good luck d3so – you might win again

Peter Lam September 26, 2010 at 1:46 am

Hi John, I’ve read your Make Money Online book and I must say, now I know why you are the very best in the industry! Thank you for an incredible book!!!

Do you have Dot Com Pho often? It would be great to meet you in person and have you autograph the book.

d3so September 26, 2010 at 7:48 pm

Dot com phos are held every Saturday at both Vancouver and Seattle or wherever John is.

I already have two autographed copies of his book ;)

Email List Building September 27, 2010 at 1:43 am

Why do you keep two? Give one away to someone who will make a good use of it.

d3so September 27, 2010 at 1:52 am

Well I won both of them.
One is autographed by John and the other is autographed by both John & Michael.
I plan to give one of them away on my blog as a prize.

Shally Martin September 27, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Wow.. You sure have won quite much from John. @d3so

Alex Dumitru September 28, 2010 at 8:40 am

That’s right. I don’t even keep a single copy. After I read a book, I give it to someone else :)

Email List Building September 28, 2010 at 8:17 pm

Using the extra book for a contest prize is a great idea except for the shipping charges which you’ll have to cover too.

Steve Moyer September 26, 2010 at 4:41 am

Please enter my name! Thanks

Shally Martin September 27, 2010 at 6:12 pm

You are already in the game steve..

Abhik September 26, 2010 at 4:55 am

Price $15+Shipping$25=$40
Sorry, can’t afford that.

John Chow September 26, 2010 at 8:59 am

Where do you live that shipping would cost more than the book. Amazon normally offer free shipping if your order totals over $25. So I normally buy 2 books.

Abhik September 26, 2010 at 10:45 am

I am sorry, my bad. It’s not $25.
It’s $15.99 for priority shipping to India including surcharge.

Well, that’s affordable. But I, like most others, want to make sure if that book is really helpful.

d3so September 27, 2010 at 1:36 am

I wonder if amazon let’s you read a sample chapter so you can check its quality.
I know that they do that for some books, I’m not sure if they do it for all of them.
I know you’re bound to learn something new or else John wouldn’t even mention the book.
Just make sure to implement what you learn otherwise it’ll all be useless.
$15 is a cheap investment. Though I’m not sure how much a dollar compares to the currency in India.

Email List Building September 27, 2010 at 1:46 am

I think that not including shipping the $15 is still not cheap for them, it may be like $600 for us.

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog September 26, 2010 at 7:33 pm

He lives in India.

Alex Dumitru September 28, 2010 at 8:42 am

Not everyone lives in the US, you know :)

Dan Lew September 26, 2010 at 6:04 am

I love Guerrilla Marketing tactics, I think I will buy a copy! Book looks great!

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog September 26, 2010 at 7:38 pm

Guerilla trick always works … even in war zone they are the most dangerous enemy.

Lets see hows this book is going …

Would love to see few review and comments.

d3so September 27, 2010 at 1:40 am

Saying that guerilla tactics always work is like stating a guarantee.
I don’t think they would work all the time but I do believe that they are effective.
Maybe we can check out the reviews at amazon.

Email List Building September 27, 2010 at 1:48 am

Whoever wins the book should write a review of it. I’ll do it if i happen to win.

best ipad cases September 27, 2010 at 3:24 am

good idea. i’ll do the review too if I win.

Alex Dumitru September 28, 2010 at 8:51 am

Guerrilla marketing is also one of my passions and it’s one reason I’ll get my hands on the book :)

Email List Building September 28, 2010 at 8:22 pm

So is it a deal that whoever wins reviews it? If the book is really great there will be reviews of it on Amazon but that may take a while for them to materialize..

Shally Martin September 26, 2010 at 8:16 am

Wow. USB 3.0 for better file transfer. I haven’t hear of that in my local computer store. Maybe they haven’t get it in the market here.
At last Ed made it to the Dot Com Pho meeting. nothing more interesting happening after that John?

d3so September 26, 2010 at 9:29 am

I haven’t heard of 3.0 either.
It must be significantly faster if it’s 10x faster than 2.0
I bet over in Europe they already have 5.0

Email List Building September 27, 2010 at 1:51 am

What makes you think that Europe has that much better stuff?

d3so September 27, 2010 at 1:57 am

I know for a fact Europe does have better stuff because everything gets released there first.
Not only Europe but Eurasia.
They’ve had video calling for the past decade and have had a 5g cellular network while we’re still working on 4.
They also have 32gb SD cards while the most I’ve seen here in the US is 8gb.
The only thing that they would lack is stuff that is made here in the US.

best ipad cases September 27, 2010 at 3:00 am

you’re wrong about europe :))

Alex Dumitru September 28, 2010 at 9:43 am

Man, 5G ? Where have you heard about 5G from ? We don’t even have 4G :)

Vik Tantry September 26, 2010 at 8:41 am

Sounds like a good book, I would love win a copy. I think social media has massive potential and should be utilized by all bloggers. It takes a while to build up a network of course but the rewards are great so it’s well worth doing.

Stumble upon unparticular is a good one because people can stumble your stuff for months if it does ok initially, the random stumble button is addictive though!
Its good to because of the social aspect, it doesn’t seem like work when you are promoting your work on a social media site.

And of course just by adding the relevant buttons to your site might mean you don’t even have to do that as your reader will share your stuff automatically if they like it.

d3so September 26, 2010 at 7:53 pm

Social media is a powerful force to utilize.
You just have to manifest its powers by building your profile effectively. I have yet to find a way to do so quickly.
But I’ve already experience a good amount of traffic coming from my Twitter and facebook accounts.

Shally Martin September 27, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Good to hear that. I’m working on my social website subscriber. Lots of things I need to learn here. I will need to check on how to get the targeted subscriber on my list.

dinu September 26, 2010 at 8:45 am

I want one !

Vincent k. September 26, 2010 at 8:46 am

John just came across your blog. Great stuff I’ve been reading through posts for the last hour. Lots of insights and knowledge scattered throughout. That social media guerilla marketing book would be super useful in my two new sites, especially because the audience are the biggest users if social media. Collegesteal dot com and vplaylist dot com!

Ben Klein September 26, 2010 at 8:46 am

I had the pleasure of attending a presentation by Shane Gibson, my reading has been so full lately but I really want a copy to see what he was talking about.

d3so September 26, 2010 at 7:46 pm

My reading list is empty at the moment.
I do have ebooks to read but get bored reading from a computer screen or my iPhone.

Email List Building September 28, 2010 at 8:27 pm

D3so, it looks like you finally came around. I remember you saying in your comments a few months back that you only read ebooks.

Shally Martin September 27, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Talking about miami beach and dot com pho, is there any chance to get john make dot com pho there? maybe sexy girls edition XD

Email List Building September 28, 2010 at 8:29 pm

I don’t think he’d want to do that kind of an edition and his wife wouldn’t like it that much either.

Shally Martin September 30, 2010 at 8:09 am

Haha.. Yeah, I guess he will came up with a better edition than hot girls.

i’d like to enter too. I think the book will be very useful for me.

Jason September 28, 2010 at 11:27 am

I’d find this book very useful, myself. If I don’t win it, I will likely go buy one.

Email List Building September 28, 2010 at 8:31 pm

That’s what most people who really want the book and don’t win will likely do.

Will this help me make social media a more efficient branding device? I am primarily looking for a way to determine the relevance of some of the less well known Social Media Sites

Backlinking Service October 1, 2010 at 11:25 am

Yet another great resource for information I am going to have to look into while at the book store. At this rate I am going to have my discount card paid for in a weeks time.

Shaun October 4, 2010 at 1:04 pm

Can’t be a worse read than Gibson’s ‘Socialize’ book.

It was written for ppl 60yrs+ , or those who have never been on the internet or watched tv.

Chennai Social Media October 5, 2010 at 8:29 am

For every positive information there is some negative feedback to it..

Essays October 8, 2010 at 2:33 am

Oh it is over. I see large number of commentators are looking to read what Mr. Gibson wrote in that book. But there were only two books and dozens of commentators.

d3so September 27, 2010 at 1:47 am

Well I’m definitely in to WIN!
Because my reading list is empty and am interested in this book.
But if it doesn’t quite meet my expectations, I’ll raffle it off as well.

Shally Martin September 27, 2010 at 6:02 pm

Able to win it or not, depends on the probability since the more comment you make the higher your chances. But it is also depending on your luck.
I hope I can also win the book :-)

Shally Martin September 27, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Never heard of that.. But things in US and Europe sure release so fast. I don’t think whether the 3.0 USB and the 32gb SD cards has reach here. Or they are finishing their stock before releasing the new one.
Hope the tech can reach here sooner.

Shally Martin September 27, 2010 at 6:23 pm

A review would not be a problem. I will do it if i’m lucky enough to win..

Email List Building September 28, 2010 at 8:35 pm

D3so,

They are more advanced in some areas but that keeps changing too. A lot of stuff is invented in North America but it’s made mostly somewhere else.

They were way ahead in mobile phones but that is slowly changing too.

d3so October 2, 2010 at 12:52 am

In europe they have 4.5G or 5g. I’m not surprised because their government is less restrictive.

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog October 1, 2010 at 5:30 am

That’s really a cool marketing …

d3so October 2, 2010 at 1:02 am

Thanks for sharing this!
I was wondering if you had any sample chapters from the book released.

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog October 1, 2010 at 5:41 am

That is the best way to get more visitors.

Do it as soon as possible.

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog October 1, 2010 at 5:48 am

I am sure he will happily bear that one as he will get new visitors … provided he do a good marketing.

d3so October 2, 2010 at 12:50 am

You’d be amazed if you went there.
What are some notable inventions in North America made East?

Trust me it’s a whole other world in the east coast. America, unfortunately is declining and isn’t the core of the world as it once was.

d3so October 2, 2010 at 12:58 am

lol yeah that’s the strategy.
I hope you win too.

Timeshare Reviews October 2, 2010 at 2:41 am

I bought USB 8G in UK yesterday and the store also had USB16G. Seems strange you can’t get this in US. Am I reading this right?

ZK @ Web Marketing Blog October 4, 2010 at 3:43 am

But here John also involves … so if refund than please update here ….
