Dot Com Pho – May 10, 2008

Despite some last minute cancellations and a few no-shows, today’s Dot Com Pho was our biggest ever with 25 people making it to Pho Lan in Richmond for the weekly meet up. It was a good thing I told Mr. Lan the day before about the number of people attending. He set aside the entire middle row of the restaurant just for us.

It was really nice to see a bunch of new faces at Dot Com Pho. I’m sorry if I didn’t get a chance to talk to all of you. It was really nice to see Yaro Starak again. This is my last Dot Com Pho in Richmond for the month and I couldn’t think of a better way to end it.

Next week, Dot Com Pho will break up into two groups: Dot Com Pho Shanghai and Dot Com Pho Richmond. If you wish to attend the Shanghai meet up, give me a shout. If you wish to attend the Richmond one, contact Stephen Fung, because Michael Kwan won’t be there. And if you’re not doing anything in June, consider swinging by Taipei. We’ll be doing Dot Com Taiwan Noodle there.

The Dot Com lifestyle. You got to love it. 😎

  1. LOL. My first Dot Com Pho… it was a riot.

    1. I love Dot Com Fur, um, Pho!

  2. Haha, I wish I could’ve been there. Are you serious that the regulars got apple mac book pros???

    1. I don’t know… it was my first time… I got some free pens…

      ….

      That don’t work… 😐

But it was fun to meet everyone.

      1. Ed Lau says:

Sorry, we don’t have enough and didn’t want to cause a riot. Everyone else got all the free pens though could stuff in their pockets (and elsewhere) though.

      2. Syed Balkhi says:

maybe you should become a regular as well 😛

        1. I think I will. It was quite fun. Everyone was friendly and had a warped sense of humour. Exactly my type of peoples. 😉

        2. I know I will definitely be a regular when I start going 😀

  3. Shawn Knight says:

I’m sure Mr. Lan doesn’t mind – thats extra money!

    1. Stephen says:

Not really. We sat there for four hours and he couldn’t turn over those tables again. John says he’s going to Shanghai for fun, but really, he’s just laying low so that Mr. Lan doesn’t kill him!

      1. Yeah, but look at all the publicity he’s getting. And he didn’t have to give away free laptops to get it either. 🙂

      2. LOL! Yes, you are correct. Pho Lan lost money today since we took over 1/3 of the restaurant (plus a certain someone got one extra spring roll for free…*cough* names rhymes with “Big Lock”… 😉

      3. I hope you guys are leaving big tips for Mr Lan.

        1. Verrrrryyy big tips lol

  4. Paolo U says:

  6. Joe Ngo says:

Hey John, you don’t need two macbook pros! How about giving one away? 🙂

    1. Paolo U says:

      For me! 👿

  7. broalex says:

I would love a macbook pro or a macbook air 😀 Who doesn`t ? Is there a contest going on soon ?

    👿

    1. John has two macbooks now! I bet there will be soon now that the usb pen contest is done.

  8. Terry Tay says:

Dot Com Pho looks like a riot 😆
I wonder if you can get a refund on the FREE pens that don’t work 🙄
    ~Terry

  9. Thiago Prado says:

who won the USB Flash Drive Pen? I wish I did…. 😀

    1. Paolo U says:

Yeah! You have a point there. By now he must have chosen who the winner is because it is already Sunday.
      😐

    2. John Chow says:

We forgot to draw a winner during Dot Com Pho. I’ll do it tomorrow.

      1. Zedomax says:

Wait, did u say I won???

        😈 😈 😈

      2. Terry Tay says:

        WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
        I Won I Won I really really won! 😛
        j/k 😆
Well, actually…I’m hoping that I’ll win when John start giving away Macbook Airs and stuff like that. Although I’d still be happy with the USA pen 😀
        ~Terry

        1. Terry Tay says:

should say USB pen…but a USA pen would be cool too.
          ~Terry

  10. /wonders if John is thinking about parlaying his blog success into the opening of a restaurant. John? 😛

  11. MoneyNing says:

It would be great to get a Macbook Pro even though I bought one last weekend!!!

  12. Asela says:

Anything with you guys is always a riot! 😈

Hey John… what was that goggles like thing anyway that you’ll were trying to promote as the gadget of the week? Tell us about it (even though I heard you mentioning that it was a disappointment).

  13. Syed Balkhi says:

that is really nice of apple to give the regulars the mac book air … John how many macbook air do you have now ??

    1. Flimjo says:

That’s Apple’s way of mimicking Marketing Leverage.

    2. How many did they give out? I wonder what the cost on those suckers is for Apple…probably like $200 or something.

      1. I’d like to get my hands on a Macbook Pro for $200. 😆

  14. DotCom Pho was fun. My forecast was right on the money. In my RSVP email to John re DotCom Pho, I predicted that 25 would show up and I counted about 25.
My next forecast is that you will be watching this –

  15. Introductions at DCP were made on 2 Flip Video camcorders, mine’s and John’s – (John got his free, I had to buy mine in Vegas back in January – why aren’t these sold in Canada yet?) –
    So, intros Part 1 –

  17. I am hungry now John 🙂 Looks like you have lot of fun on Dot Com Pho, and that is so nice!

  18. Flimjo says:

Wow, looks like this thing is becoming a big event!

  19. Thiago Prado says:

Hey John I think you should invite more girls to participate in the event. What does bring more attention than hot girls? Nothing
I was waiting to see hot Lisa at this edition of Dot Com Pho, maybe next time she’d attend.

    1. Ed Lau says:

That must be a great selling point. “Hey ladies, come to eat with us so 20 guys can oogle you for a couple hours.”

      1. Stephen says:

Ed! You can bring “beautiful girls” direct to your Pho!

  20. Bibokz says:

Number of members is not a major factor, for me the most important is their skills. 🙂

  21. Alex D says:

Hehe, I can see that you had a lot of fun

  22. Dean Saliba says:

Sounds like you guys really enjoyed yourselfs. 🙂

  23. The Dot Com Pho in Richmond is a possibility some day, but Shanghai is a little bit futher. Don’t know if I can make that one.

  24. Sergio says:

Is that your car up at the top??????????? SICK!!!!!!

  25. Michael Kwan says:

Just a side note that I won’t be there for pho next week, so uh, contact someone else. I’m pretty sure Ed Lau and Stephen Fung will be in attendance.

    1. Ed Lau says:

Stephen and I will be in charge next week, I presume. Then after that, I’m not sure if I’ll be at Dot Com Pho either until Dot Com Taipei.

    2. Stephen says:

Oh that’s just great. Who are we going to abuse now? 😈

  26. You need to do a Dot Com Pho on the road.

If you ever want to hold one in Phoenix, I can recommend several restaurants and maybe even provide accomodations.

  27. MoneyNing says:

Hmm so how many Macbooks did Apple send you?

  28. Hope we’re still going to be able to get Dot Com Pho reports from China. I wonder if you can reach your blog in China since they have firewalls that block out evil and all that.

  29. XLOR says:

Wow, Dot Com Pho Shanghai and Dot Com Pho Richmond…nice work. Any plans for Dot Com Pho Moscow?)))

  30. DeboHobo says:

Ya’ll always seem to have a blast. I noticed there were no black people there I am going to have to make a special trip out of country just to join you for one of these meetings, to spice up the place so to speak LOL 🙂

And it looks like the bull horns found their rightful place…

  31. Noobpreneur says:

    John,

Your pho offer is killing me! I want to join but I can’t – Shanghai and Richmond are too far, far away from where I live right now.

Anyway, good luck for your Dot Com Pho!

    Pho… hmm.. yum…

  32. I can’t wait until I can start going to these, seriously. It looks like a lot of fun and the food looks great. I will be transferring schools to the University of Toledo soon so I will be pretty close to Canada to make the drive. I’m excited.

  33. Mike Huang says:

John, how much do you guys tip when you eat with a group at Pho Lan? Here in California or well around OC and LA county, if you tip at a Pho restaurant, they look at you with a shocked face. People usualy don’t tip at Pho restaurants here because it became a trend/habit, so the service may not be as good either.

    -Mike

p.s. One thing I may know though is that when the people pick up the dishes when you’re done, they roll out that “CART”.

  34. When will we get a Dot Com Pho Europe?

  35. Cinder says:

This may be a silly question, but where is Richmond located?
Second question, have you found any downside to using your real name as your website name?

  36. Alexis Fox says:

Ever though of doing one north of the US? (Canada!)
