Dot Com Pho – May 10, 2008

written by John Chow on May 10, 2008

How to make $593 in less than one hour

Despite some last minute cancellations and a few no-shows, today’s Dot Com Pho was our biggest ever with 25 people making it to Pho Lan in Richmond for the weekly meet up. It was a good thing I told Mr. Lan the day before about the number of people attending. He set aside the entire middle row of the restaurant just for us.

It was really nice to see a bunch of new faces at Dot Com Pho. I’m sorry if I didn’t get a chance to talk to all of you. It was really nice to see Yaro Starak again. This is my last Dot Com Pho in Richmond for the month and I couldn’t think of a better way to end it.

Next week, Dot Com Pho will break up into two groups: Dot Com Pho Shanghai and Dot Com Pho Richmond. If you wish to attend the Shanghai meet up, give me a shout. If you wish to attend the Richmond one, contact Stephen Fung, because Michael Kwan won’t be there. And if you’re not doing anything in June, consider swinging by Taipei. We’ll be doing Dot Com Taiwan Noodle there.

The Dot Com lifestyle. You got to love it.

LOL. My first Dot Com Pho… it was a riot.

Chris Jacobson May 10, 2008 at 8:41 pm

I love Dot Com Fur, um, Pho!

Russell Wagner May 10, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Haha, I wish I could’ve been there. Are you serious that the regulars got apple mac book pros???

Paul Piotrowski May 10, 2008 at 8:56 pm

I don’t know… it was my first time… I got some free pens…

….

That don’t work… :|

But it was fun to meet everyone.

Ed Lau May 10, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Sorry, we don’t have enough and didn’t want to cause a riot. Everyone else got all the free pens though could stuff in their pockets (and elsewhere) though.

Syed Balkhi May 11, 2008 at 1:59 am

maybe you should become a regular as well :P

Paul Piotrowski May 11, 2008 at 9:49 am

I think I will. It was quite fun. Everyone was friendly and had a warped sense of humour. Exactly my type of peoples. ;)

Kyle Klingler May 12, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I know I will definitely be a regular when I start going :D

Shawn Knight May 10, 2008 at 8:42 pm

I’m sure Mr. Lan doesn’t mind – thats extra money!

Stephen May 10, 2008 at 9:13 pm

Not really. We sat there for four hours and he couldn’t turn over those tables again. John says he’s going to Shanghai for fun, but really, he’s just laying low so that Mr. Lan doesn’t kill him!

Paul Piotrowski May 10, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Yeah, but look at all the publicity he’s getting. And he didn’t have to give away free laptops to get it either. :)

iPhone in Canada May 10, 2008 at 9:27 pm

LOL! Yes, you are correct. Pho Lan lost money today since we took over 1/3 of the restaurant (plus a certain someone got one extra spring roll for free…*cough* names rhymes with “Big Lock”…

Affiliate Confession May 11, 2008 at 10:27 am

Kyle Klingler May 12, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Paolo U May 11, 2008 at 10:22 am

broalex May 10, 2008 at 9:58 pm

I would love a macbook pro or a macbook air :D Who doesn`t ? Is there a contest going on soon ?

Paolo U May 10, 2008 at 10:42 pm

John Chow May 10, 2008 at 10:55 pm

We forgot to draw a winner during Dot Com Pho. I’ll do it tomorrow.

Zedomax May 11, 2008 at 12:04 am

Terry Tay May 11, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Terry Tay May 11, 2008 at 9:23 pm

/wonders if John is thinking about parlaying his blog success into the opening of a restaurant. John? :P

MoneyNing May 10, 2008 at 11:12 pm

It would be great to get a Macbook Pro even though I bought one last weekend!!!

Asela May 11, 2008 at 12:41 am

Anything with you guys is always a riot!

Hey John… what was that goggles like thing anyway that you’ll were trying to promote as the gadget of the week? Tell us about it (even though I heard you mentioning that it was a disappointment).

Syed Balkhi May 11, 2008 at 1:56 am

that is really nice of apple to give the regulars the mac book air … John how many macbook air do you have now ??

Flimjo May 11, 2008 at 7:45 am

That’s Apple’s way of mimicking Marketing Leverage.

Paul Piotrowski May 11, 2008 at 9:52 am

How many did they give out? I wonder what the cost on those suckers is for Apple…probably like $200 or something.

Kyle Klingler May 12, 2008 at 8:46 pm

I’d like to get my hands on a Macbook Pro for $200.

DotCom Pho was fun. My forecast was right on the money. In my RSVP email to John re DotCom Pho, I predicted that 25 would show up and I counted about 25.
My next forecast is that you will be watching this -

Introductions at DCP were made on 2 Flip Video camcorders, mine’s and John’s – (John got his free, I had to buy mine in Vegas back in January – why aren’t these sold in Canada yet?) -
So, intros Part 1 -

Make Money Talks May 11, 2008 at 5:05 am

I am hungry now John :) Looks like you have lot of fun on Dot Com Pho, and that is so nice!

Flimjo May 11, 2008 at 7:44 am

Wow, looks like this thing is becoming a big event!

Thiago Prado May 11, 2008 at 8:52 am

Hey John I think you should invite more girls to participate in the event. What does bring more attention than hot girls? Nothing
I was waiting to see hot Lisa at this edition of Dot Com Pho, maybe next time she’d attend.

Ed Lau May 11, 2008 at 1:05 pm

That must be a great selling point. “Hey ladies, come to eat with us so 20 guys can oogle you for a couple hours.”

Stephen May 11, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Ed! You can bring “beautiful girls” direct to your Pho!

Bibokz May 11, 2008 at 9:19 am

Number of members is not a major factor, for me the most important is their skills. :)

Alex D May 11, 2008 at 10:00 am

Hehe, I can see that you had a lot of fun

Dean Saliba May 11, 2008 at 10:14 am

Sounds like you guys really enjoyed yourselfs. :-)

Affiliate Confession May 11, 2008 at 10:24 am

The Dot Com Pho in Richmond is a possibility some day, but Shanghai is a little bit futher. Don’t know if I can make that one.

Sergio May 11, 2008 at 11:36 am

Is that your car up at the top??????????? SICK!!!!!!

Michael Kwan May 11, 2008 at 1:10 pm

Just a side note that I won’t be there for pho next week, so uh, contact someone else. I’m pretty sure Ed Lau and Stephen Fung will be in attendance.

Ed Lau May 11, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Stephen and I will be in charge next week, I presume. Then after that, I’m not sure if I’ll be at Dot Com Pho either until Dot Com Taipei.

Stephen May 11, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Oh that’s just great. Who are we going to abuse now?

MrAchievement.com (Stanley Bronstein) May 11, 2008 at 5:24 pm

You need to do a Dot Com Pho on the road.

If you ever want to hold one in Phoenix, I can recommend several restaurants and maybe even provide accomodations.

Hmm so how many Macbooks did Apple send you?

Affiliate Confession May 11, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Hope we’re still going to be able to get Dot Com Pho reports from China. I wonder if you can reach your blog in China since they have firewalls that block out evil and all that.

XLOR May 11, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Wow, Dot Com Pho Shanghai and Dot Com Pho Richmond…nice work. Any plans for Dot Com Pho Moscow?)))

DeboHobo May 12, 2008 at 6:07 am

Ya’ll always seem to have a blast. I noticed there were no black people there I am going to have to make a special trip out of country just to join you for one of these meetings, to spice up the place so to speak LOL :)

And it looks like the bull horns found their rightful place…

Noobpreneur May 12, 2008 at 5:47 pm

John,

Your pho offer is killing me! I want to join but I can’t – Shanghai and Richmond are too far, far away from where I live right now.

Anyway, good luck for your Dot Com Pho!

Pho… hmm.. yum…

Kyle Klingler May 12, 2008 at 8:34 pm

I can’t wait until I can start going to these, seriously. It looks like a lot of fun and the food looks great. I will be transferring schools to the University of Toledo soon so I will be pretty close to Canada to make the drive. I’m excited.

Mike Huang May 13, 2008 at 3:09 pm

John, how much do you guys tip when you eat with a group at Pho Lan? Here in California or well around OC and LA county, if you tip at a Pho restaurant, they look at you with a shocked face. People usualy don’t tip at Pho restaurants here because it became a trend/habit, so the service may not be as good either.

-Mike

p.s. One thing I may know though is that when the people pick up the dishes when you’re done, they roll out that “CART”.

Financial Jesus May 14, 2008 at 7:09 am

When will we get a Dot Com Pho Europe?

Cinder May 16, 2008 at 7:28 am

This may be a silly question, but where is Richmond located?
Second question, have you found any downside to using your real name as your website name?

Alexis Fox May 20, 2008 at 10:48 pm

Ever though of doing one north of the US? (Canada!)
