Driving with John Chow – Episode 17 When To Monetize Your Blog

When is the best time to monetize your blog? Should you do it from the get go or wait until you built up a readership? What is the best way to make money from a blog? Should you go with Googles ads, affiliate marketing, email marketing, direct ad sales, a some combination? I answered all these questions in this episode of Driving with John Chow.

Not only do I answer the question of when to monetize your blog, I also tell you how much to charge when the advertisers come knocking to buy ad space from you. Don’t sell your ad space until after you watch this episode. Your feedback is welcome. Please leave it in the comments.

Hey John, thanks for the video, I am using the methods that you teach in your blogging course and you mention exactly that.

I personally have not set up any ads on my blog. I am focused on driving traffic and building relationships with the readers. I know from past experience that if you monetize too early, you won’t make anything anyway.

How can you make money if you don’t have any readers? My goal this time around is to build an email list. I wish I would have focused on this a long time ago. But I guess we all get started doing business the right way when we are ready.

This is my first time watching one of your episodes. I really enjoyed the information.

    Hi John,

I first want to say thanks for the advice… It’s always well received.

I agree with you totally about the ads. I have made this mistake a few times on a couple of my older blogs and it really is of no benefit whatsoever to put ads up before you build a readership.

I recently took your advice and branded myself with a new blog with my name. I don’t have any ads up at the moment and I think I’ll keep it that way for a while.

It seems that social marketing is the way to go anyway. The internet is a very social environment and the people seem to really want to know something about you before they will purchase what you offer.

So it’s all about building relationships and then worrying about what comes next.

    Thanks John,

I knew you would talk about this sooner or later!

Here is the correct answer. When is the right time to monetize your blog? RIGHT NOW.

  5. Sharon says:

Excellent advise. I worried about this stuff when I first started and noticed I didn’t get a good following until I relaxed and concentrated on my writing. Now that I have a loyal following, I just advertise maybe three or four ads at a time and make pretty decent pennies 🙂

    Hi everyone,

good advice as always John but I’m more interested in how to build a 2000 readership base daily to my blog?
I use free traffic and some pay options, too, but what is your advice on this?

How to promote a blog? I know it is not easy but how did you do it John?

Thank you and see you on top.

  7. Zubin Kutar says:

Start monetizing as soon as you have a few posts published.

    Thanks John,

Really well explained. It’s the first time I seen anyone talk about when to monetize on their blog.

Finally some sense in clearing up the matter.

    Hi John

Tried to subscribe to your news letter today, but keep getting an error suggesting a missing field. Maybe you could add me manual like or let me know when you have fixed your email listing service?

  12. Monetizing is always one of the most interesting topic. There are many ways to do it, but what’s the most effective and best way to earn? I believe one has to do split tests to really find the true potential.

  13. Sir is great. Sir always give us wonderful suggestion! Thank you very much sir.

Hello John, Thanks for the video. For now, I’m just using the google ads to monetize my entertainment blog, its kinda low money entering in it but at least I have to push my self towrds my goal. I’m planning to have email marketing in the future. Thanks for the videofor giving great tips on how to moentize my blog.

This has to be one of the most helpful videos I have watched. I actually did have advertisements on my blog (Chitika ads on the side and one affiliate link), but after seeing this I immediately took it down. It makes complete sense! If my blog is new and I put in affiliate links or advertising links on the side, they’re going in-and-out of my websites and they won’t remember me.

Excellent video. I’m a new visitor of your blog but I have already favorited this website. I hope I can be as successful as you some day 🙂

  16. I need to remove all those banner ads and make more readership said by Sir John Chow.. It is better to listen to the one who knows rather than thinking that it will be good to pile up lots of ads to earn money.

  17. I agree. Build a relationship with your visitors, having them subscribe to you autoresponder(s) is and will always be the most valuable asset that any internet marketer can have.

  18. Ammar Elahi says:

Great video and nicely explained. I am following your tips and my main aim is to build traffic for my blog and then monetize it.

  19. Is that a great blog post or what? Too many instances in today’s world where the human element is lacking hence the need to reach out and build a relationship prior to pursuing the commercial aspect. I am going to watch this video again tomorrow! Thanks John!
