Everything I Learned in Kindergarten Applies to Blogging
How long has it been since you have been to Kindergarten? I know it’s been awhile for me. Here is a refresher for those that forgot what you should have learned and how you can apply it to blogging…
Share Everything
Share your knowledge with others and it will bring rewards. This has been very evident with bloggers that niche in a specific topic. I know Copyblogger has told us all now to charge for our knowledge but blogging isn’t about charging it’s about sharing.
Play Fair
Don’t cheat or try to bend the rules. I guarantee you will get caught and penalized. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but one day you will get caught. If you have to ask if it is cheating then most likely it is.
Don’t Hit People
It may seem fun to criticize others on your blog but it definitely does not feel good when the shoe is on the other foot. Remember what goes around comes around.
Clean Up Your Own Mess
If you make a mess of something because of your blog. Apologize, fix the problem and move on. Remember to learn from your mistakes and don’t let it happen again. The bigger your blog becomes the more of a mess you can make.
Don’t Take Things That Aren’t Yours
Stealing someones content is bad. If you can not create your own content then don’t blog.
Say You’re Sorry When You Hurt Somebody
If your blog offends someone it is surprising how a sorry can go a long way. I think the Cow shows a good example of saying sorry.
Take A Nap Every Afternoon
Remember to disconnect from the blog sphere and take a break. This will bring you back with new ideas and refreshed to keep going.

What about how you have a belly button?
Reply to this commentROFL, now thats what I was not expecting as a first post.
Most of the tips might seem weird to many, but they do really make sense. More than tips actually I’d say rules.
Thanks again John
Reply to this commentThis post is by Gary Jones, not John…
I should say that this is creativity at work. I like the style of this articles. Funny for some but at the same time, it is educating.
Reply to this commentWow. I didn’t even noticed that this was not John’s work but Gary’s.
Great comparison and very entertaining too since everyone did go through this kindergarten stage. Keep it up Gary.
Reply to this commentAnd remember don’t run with sissors!
Reply to this commentunless they’re real sharp, then it is ok
Reply to this commentOf all the things you mentioned, I think we should pay a little more attention to “Say You’re Sorry When You Hurt Somebody”. Everyone is prone to mistakes at one time or another. However, addmitting it and sincerely apologizing not only establishes that you are a person of integrity but also earns you some respect & trust and along this process, who knows, you might end up generating some buzz - and eventually end up with more readers and subscribers to your blog!
Reply to this commentGood rules to live by John!
Reply to this commentI have to agree.
Reply to this commentThis is a guest post by Gary Jones not written by John
Reply to this commentWhen I was in kindergarten, I also learned to schedule my working and playing time. For blogging, I guess we should do the same too - a time for blogging something serious, and a time for blogging something relaxing. And I think we should do that regularly.
Reply to this commentActually, this is true. Sometimes when I blog on Zedomax.com, I get completely focused on some interesting technologies, gets my mind to relax I guess… OneBuckWiki seems like helluva work though with moderation and website updates. Not complaining…both are fun…
Reply to this commentFor some reason this post made me think of Kindergarten cop.
“My dad’s a gynecologist. He looks at vaginas all day long. “
Reply to this comment“Boys have penises and girls have vaginas”
*waits until comment gets deleted*
Reply to this commentOops.. forgot my little:

Reply to this commentWhat? Its little?
Reply to this commentwordpress blog comments don’t have titles
Reply to this commentKindergarten used to be fun… now they are giving them homework and limiting playtime. It’s sad to be a kid in today’s society.
Reply to this commentYeah, fleeing from girls due to a fear of catching “cooties” for half an hour was so much fun. Poor kids these days can’t do that anymore. No wonder they are getting so friggin fat.
Reply to this commentThe same thing is happening in the real world too! KG reflects what the grown ups are doing.
Reply to this commentI sure agree with the afternoon nap tip. Yesterday, I was very tired and I accidentally deleted one of my 600 words article that was to be published!
Now I will have to start again!
Reply to this commentHeh, I hacked my wordpress install and dumped the “delete post” button for that very reason.
Reply to this commentReally? can you actually do that? How?
Reply to this commentProbably done quite the same way you customize a php file for the look of your skin, except instead of changing the skin, go into the actual wordpress files…
Reply to this commentDon’t forget “Stay inside the lines, Billy”!
I’m not sure how coloring inside the lines pertains to blogging, but it had to be said.
Reply to this commentHahahaha! I enjoyed that one! Plus the fact that you referred to me makes that line very interesting.
Reply to this commentHey, McBilly. Nice to see you here.
Reply to this commentI love how you say don’t hit people. I think the worst thing you can do for your credibility is to attack someone else.
Reply to this comment#1 reason why all politicians suck. All they do these days is bash, lie, bash, lie, and bash some more.
Reply to this commentPeople tend to get tonnes of traffic with controversies by hitting people. Remember all those imposter’s act?
Reply to this commentFrom the page:”Don’t cheat or try to bend the rules. I guarantee you will get caught and penalized. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but one day you will get caught. If you have to ask if it is cheating then most likely it is.”
Does this apply on Mr John yourself being evil?
Reply to this commentI know John and he’s not evil. Would anyone evil actually say they are evil?
The true evil people are those that say they will do no evil
Reply to this commentWanna bet? Reverse snobbery. Quite common in certain circles!
Reply to this commentMy momma always said “Evil is as Evil does!”
Reply to this commentI will do no evil
Reply to this commentI agree with the afternoon nap break. Thirty minutes of snooze time can do wonders for your creativity. Hard to do so if you have a day job though, unless you live and work in Mexico!
Reply to this commentI go sit in my car for 20 minutes of my lunch hour and snooze.
Reply to this commentI can relate to the taking a nap part. Looking at a screen all day makes me sleepy. Sometimes I take a nap and wake up 5 hours later. Whoops!
Reply to this commentNapping keeps you young too…
Reply to this comment“The bigger your bog becomes the more of a mess you can make.”
Yeah, if I have a big bog I’d make a big mess too.
Reply to this commentBog is Australian slang for toilet. John, you need to re-read your post mate!
At least he didn’t say bong
Reply to this commentTch tch, there you go hurting feelings of that wonderful Indian community Bengalis who are affectionately called Bongs!
Reply to this commentWell, good points, but there is potential for danger.
There needs to be balance so you don’t get walked over.
The last point is the best. The Nap or put your head down and close your eyes thing is SUPER underrated. A clear mind makes the best decisions.
Reply to this commentI definitely remember the “Treat others as you wish to be treated” rule from my youth. Stupid teachers repeated that every single day
Reply to this commentWow, so many mistakes. Indeed, this post was written by someone in kindergarten.
Reply to this commentI learned that I didn’t sleep during nap time but I wish I had it now in high school. When you are young you tend to have more energy than older people (duh). When my blog was young I had a lot of energy and posted every day. Now I just nap on my blog but I have to break that habit.
Reply to this commentinteresting analogy
Reply to this commentGary,
the best part from Fulghum is “When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.”

Reply to this commentGood article John, and your RSS jumped up again. Neat.
Reply to this commentJohn, you can relate to this since you have a child:
RE: taking a nap - ever wonder why when we are born, we sleep 3 times a day, then a toddler sleeps twice a day, then we grow up and only sleep once a day.
I want to be a toddler again!
Reply to this commentWhat a great post! You’re absolutely right about these points. It similair to the post we made called 6 Proverbs To Guide Your Internet Marketing
Reply to this commentHmm…this post is great! I think what all of us bloggers should focus on is “Play Fair.”
There are some bloggers that don’t seem to like the “fair” game and go out of their way to do something sneaky…
…and no, not the evil John Chow, but I mean others.
Reply to this commentYup, ways to live life really.
Reply to this commentPlaying by those rules takes all the fun out of link-baiting and controversial posting !!! However, knowing when to quit and say you’re sorry is definitely a useful tactic.
Reply to this commentNice article … Looks like I made some opps.
Reply to this commentthats one way to look at it, very profound!
Reply to this commentYou are right that it is really good to know when you should quit or take a break. This will also make better blog postings etc.
Reply to this commentExcellent post. 5 star. This is the true SEO that should be applied to everyones web sites.
Reply to this commentI liked the nap thing. I love sleeping
Reply to this commentBopporia?
Reply to this commentShare Everything?
Lol, you guys don’t do always do that, when u guys had the drop in PR, said there was some “secret tools” u used to get it back temporarily. Definitely not share everything you know I really doubt it, although good for PR to say it
Trade Secrets are Trade Secrets
Reply to this commentIf we are not obedient in the kindergarten, we might be canned. If we don’t follow rules in the blogosphere, we can be slapped as well (reminds me of the Google slap)!
Reply to this commentThe headline is really catchy.
Reply to this commentgood rules and good articles john. Success for you
Reply to this commentThis reminds me of that wonderful film, “Back to school”. I wish that life could be that simple. The lessons learnt in school are the ones that form the character of the grown up. Some how, along the way of growing up, we seem to stray away. This is a nice reminder to get back into the straight and narrow.
Reply to this commentI remembered when I was young, I used to like this girl as well..
Anyway, this is rather unusual @@
Reply to this commentReally there exists some guides to make a better blog. I thank you by share these guidelines
I am a brazilian girl trying to make a better blog on my own too. My news site (”portal de noticias” in portuguese) is still needing some help
Reply to this commentI think this blog needs a separate forum? The time I get to respond there are already 59 posts ahead of me!
In any case at least there isn’t a teacher there to make us sit in the corner when we’ve been bad…
Reply to this commentClickforNick -Reasons you SHOULD get a Credit Card.
Pretty simple and straight forward. There’s nothing left to be said.
Reply to this commentI like the play fair rule, I always try and abide by that
Reply to this commentGreat post. Maybe BlueFur should have a blog on top of its services
Reply to this commentDon’t Hit People
Reply to this comment“It may seem fun to criticize others on your blog but it definitely does not feel good when the shoe is on the other foot. Remember what goes around comes around” John you forget it when shoe won over you in RSS contest. You called him “A Cheater”, but it may be because of his marketting tricksl, Now would you please say sorry to him.
I think John just said he was evil (I intrepret it as being crafty as he had a fake feedburner number up there for a while). I could’ve missed that comment but I don’t think he really said he was a cheater.
Reply to this commentYes you are right, he said “I will only say that Shoe is a lot more evil than I gave him credit for” this is normal talk . (?)
Reply to this commentWell, just saying that we should give John the benefit of the doubt
Reply to this commentI learnt in kindergarten that i should look after my cousin who was a few months younger than me and terrified of the ogre teacher. Even as adults we need to look after our own dont we?
Reply to this commentThat is so true Gary! Good article!
Reply to this commentI think that knowledge that we acquire in kindergarten or at school can be used in different situations. So, we shouldn’t forget what we have already learnt.
Reply to this commentThe number of comments indicate what a great subject to write on. How do you pick these topics?
Reply to this commentI am also eager to know
Reply to this commentThat is so true Gary! Good article!

Reply to this commentthats what got me to start blogging. it seemed simple enough. you set up a blog and put stuff on it, then you put up some links and people click. you get paid. its like that brian mcknight song. 1..you’re like a dream come true, 2….
its not rocket science. if you build it they will click
