Feeling The Power Of Google PageRank 6

written by John Chow on May 12th, 2007

search-traffic.png

As you may know John Chow dot Com received a PageRank 6 during that last Google PR update. I thought it would be interesting to look at the effect the new PageRank had on search traffic.

The above chart shows the search engine visitors this blog received from January to April. May traffic is a projection based on the first ten days of this month. I expect the final May number to be higher than projected because the PR updated started on April 27 and took over a week before all Google data centers were seeing the new PageRank.

While the chart includes traffic from eleven different search engines, it could really be call Google traffic because Google accounted for over 95% of the visits. Now I know Google doesn’t own 95% of the search market (at least not yet) so I’m wondering why I don’t receive much traffic from other search engines. The results are encouraging however. Search traffic has gone up 90% since February.

Top 10 Search Keywords

keyword-traffic.png

Looking at the top 10 keywords, I’m amazed at how many people search for my name. As far as I know, I don’t think there are any famous person name John Chow. The top 10 keywords shows the power of having other sites link to you with a common anchor text. My Make Money Online reviews ask other bloggers to link to my blog homepage with the anchor “make money online.” I now rank number one in Google for every market but the US, where I am number two. However, I am now ranking for derivatives of the anchor term.

The top 10 keywords accounts for 23% of all searches. A nice number indeed but it still means that 77% of searches come from the long tail. Hitting long tail keywords can be tricky. Fortunately, there is long tail keyword service to help you do that. Since I already ranked so well for my main keywords, I believe most of my search growth moving forward will come from long tail keywords.

I will post an update at the end of the month to show the final search numbers.

its not really the pagerank… It is really the link building that is being done.

Interesting post. I’m inspired to go take a look at what keywords make up my top 25% of visitors, as well as seeing how my search traffic has been affected after the PageRank update.

Yeah, just like what IMB does, all I have to type is the letter “J” on the URL field and I’m good to go. I do have John Chow dot Com on bookmark, but I don’t think I’ve used it like ever.

Well I think Google Pagerank is updated in 3 months but actually Google secretly counts on the no. of inbound links and displays it only after 3 months when there is a PR update.

There may be a mild{not in your case} change in the Page Rating In SERP’s

But still Great guns

I think you went ahead of problogger Darren Rowse who uses the same keywords
Just after your result

For the record, Pagerank has no direct influence on rankings or traffic. The increase in search traffic is most likely due to now ranking for the make money terms if anything else.

I think Stuart is right. The fact that pagerank flips from 5 to 6 won’t in itself create a rise in SE traffic. That process started long before the pagerank changed. An increase in PR won’t move you higher up the rankings, but rather a move up the rankings (influenced by factors like number of back links) will in many instances see an increase in PR.

You’re right. PageRank has no direct influence on rankings, but pagerank generally increases with age, inbound links, etc etc which do have an effect on rankings.

I am also facing similar problem. 90% of my search traffic is from Google. 5-8% from Yahoo. I am not getting even 1% of traffic from MSN.

that’s understandable. it’s why microsoft is buying Yahoo. we all know how good MS Live search

The april 2007 search market share was released by hitwise this week, and google has 65.3%, Yahoo has 20.7%, MSN has 8.5%, Ask has 3.7%, and various others have 1.9%. I made a post on my blog about it if you were really interested.

This is another example of complete misunderstanding and misinformation about what the PR in the toolbar represents. The Toolbar PR increase has zero to do with the increased traffic. The toolbar PR is months old. If your recieving increased traffic it’s from more recent link additions, Google data pushes, or algo changes.

Sorry to rain on your parade.

I have read that yahoo gives also to much importance to the age of the site, so sites with less than one year, did not rank well on yahoo.

Would be interesting to see some words, like “Jon Chow”, “Jonh Chow” or similars that are in the tail. That is a reason to include in the blog words writen in mistaken mode, so you don´t loose this visits.
Even, there´s a guy taking avantage in this, he is in the parked domain. http://www.jonhchow.com

I think that we all know that Google PageRank is really updated on a continual basis and it is only the visible PR exposed by the toolbar that is updated every three months or so. Also, internally PR has several decimal places of precision so it is not like you went from 5 to 6, but more likely from 5.8 to 6.0 (or something like that). So in actuality I would not expect that your traffic would change that much at all.

I don think PageRank has much effect on a traffic. Sometimes your link building (like the “make money online” anchor text technique John mentioned) and the way you write your post (e.g. if you want to rank high for a particular keyword, put it under the tag.) Trust me, I used this this on my PR 3 blog for a harry potter realted keyword and it did wonders!!
