Feeling The Power Of Google PageRank 6

As you may know John Chow dot Com received a PageRank 6 during that last Google PR update. I thought it would be interesting to look at the effect the new PageRank had on search traffic.
The above chart shows the search engine visitors this blog received from January to April. May traffic is a projection based on the first ten days of this month. I expect the final May number to be higher than projected because the PR updated started on April 27 and took over a week before all Google data centers were seeing the new PageRank.
While the chart includes traffic from eleven different search engines, it could really be call Google traffic because Google accounted for over 95% of the visits. Now I know Google doesn’t own 95% of the search market (at least not yet) so I’m wondering why I don’t receive much traffic from other search engines. The results are encouraging however. Search traffic has gone up 90% since February.
Top 10 Search Keywords

Looking at the top 10 keywords, I’m amazed at how many people search for my name. As far as I know, I don’t think there are any famous person name John Chow. The top 10 keywords shows the power of having other sites link to you with a common anchor text. My Make Money Online reviews ask other bloggers to link to my blog homepage with the anchor “make money online.” I now rank number one in Google for every market but the US, where I am number two. However, I am now ranking for derivatives of the anchor term.
The top 10 keywords accounts for 23% of all searches. A nice number indeed but it still means that 77% of searches come from the long tail. Hitting long tail keywords can be tricky. Fortunately, there is long tail keyword service to help you do that. Since I already ranked so well for my main keywords, I believe most of my search growth moving forward will come from long tail keywords.
I will post an update at the end of the month to show the final search numbers.

Nice job John. I went from pr 0 to 3 and Im noticing a large increase in SE traffic as well.
Reply to this commentwell congrats, but generally you wounldn’t see a big surge with pagerank change from 0 to 3. but i’m sure it helps
Reply to this commentits not really the pagerank… It is really the link building that is being done.
Reply to this commentI got a PR3 as well, traffic is building gradually
Reply to this commentWhat’s that thing that tells you what your top search terms are?
Reply to this commentI think that’s Google Analytics.
Reply to this commentGoogle Analytics and longtail hit also.
Reply to this commentCongratulation john.. I hope your blog will reach PR 10 some day.. I’ll looking forward your next post..
Reply to this commentInteresting post. I’m inspired to go take a look at what keywords make up my top 25% of visitors, as well as seeing how my search traffic has been affected after the PageRank update.
Reply to this commentAmazing stats, John — no wonder a lot of people want to be like you.
Reply to this commentI do a search on johnchow everytime i want to visit you directly, since i am lazy to type in the http://www. and .com!!!!!!
Reply to this commentThat’s what cookies are for, man. You should try it out some time — they’re quite tasty!
Reply to this commentDon’t you mean bookmarks?
Reply to this commentNo, cookies. I dont have JC bookmarked, but when I type “j” in the url bar the address automatically fills itself in.
Reply to this commentYeah, just like what IMB does, all I have to type is the letter “J” on the URL field and I’m good to go. I do have John Chow dot Com on bookmark, but I don’t think I’ve used it like ever.
Reply to this commentHuh, really good you can take over other good sites (partly) due to PR 6.
I think the Make Money Online Batches owe the credit, you are a pure
genius
Reply to this commentBah, i got PR4 from PR0, happy with it.
Reply to this commentWell I think Google Pagerank is updated in 3 months but actually Google secretly counts on the no. of inbound links and displays it only after 3 months when there is a PR update.
There may be a mild{not in your case} change in the Page Rating In SERP’s
But still Great guns
I think you went ahead of problogger Darren Rowse who uses the same keywords
Just after your result

Reply to this commentJohn just one doubt why is your getting traffic for “best wordpress plugins”.
Reply to this commenthe has a well optimised site for this kind of traffic, search “best wordpress plugins” and you will probably go to one of john chow’s posts.
Reply to this commentAmazing John
My Blog has got a PR 5 its only 4 months old but most of my traffic comes from Google

Andy
Reply to this commentI see you haven’t cornered the Paris Hilton Camel Toe market yet. It’s kinda sad, but thats how most people stumble across swollen pickles.
Reply to this commentBest comment ever.
Reply to this commentFor the record, Pagerank has no direct influence on rankings or traffic. The increase in search traffic is most likely due to now ranking for the make money terms if anything else.
Stu
Reply to this commentstu, you might have a point there, and know what you mean. But read your own words again, it’s kinda contradictary, isn’t it?
For the record, Pagerank has no direct influence on rankings or traffic. The increase in search traffic is most likely due to now ranking for the make money terms if anything else.
Reply to this commentI think Stuart is right. The fact that pagerank flips from 5 to 6 won’t in itself create a rise in SE traffic. That process started long before the pagerank changed. An increase in PR won’t move you higher up the rankings, but rather a move up the rankings (influenced by factors like number of back links) will in many instances see an increase in PR.
Reply to this commentYou’re right. PageRank has no direct influence on rankings, but pagerank generally increases with age, inbound links, etc etc which do have an effect on rankings.
Reply to this commentI am also facing similar problem. 90% of my search traffic is from Google. 5-8% from Yahoo. I am not getting even 1% of traffic from MSN.
Reply to this commentthat’s understandable. it’s why microsoft is buying Yahoo. we all know how good MS Live search
Reply to this commentis!
The april 2007 search market share was released by hitwise this week, and google has 65.3%, Yahoo has 20.7%, MSN has 8.5%, Ask has 3.7%, and various others have 1.9%. I made a post on my blog about it if you were really interested.
Reply to this commentIt’ll be great when I START ranking,
!
Reply to this commentI didn’t get a new PR this time around.
Reply to this commentThis is another example of complete misunderstanding and misinformation about what the PR in the toolbar represents. The Toolbar PR increase has zero to do with the increased traffic. The toolbar PR is months old. If your recieving increased traffic it’s from more recent link additions, Google data pushes, or algo changes.
Sorry to rain on your parade.
Reply to this commentI have read that yahoo gives also to much importance to the age of the site, so sites with less than one year, did not rank well on yahoo.
Reply to this commentWould be interesting to see some words, like “Jon Chow”, “Jonh Chow” or similars that are in the tail. That is a reason to include in the blog words writen in mistaken mode, so you don´t loose this visits.
Reply to this commentEven, there´s a guy taking avantage in this, he is in the parked domain. http://www.jonhchow.com
At last update my com domain didn’t change. But net domain increased to 4 from 3.
Reply to this commentThe interesting thing is; i was not trying to increase ranking for net domain:)
My top keyword in Google organic searches so far is ‘minx’ which isn’t particularly targeted…
Reply to this commentHow do you check your google PR rankings? I just started out last week so I’m probably still a big fat goose egg.
Reply to this commentThat great research again…!! my blog has gone to PR4 and my technorati ranking is 42K…linking definitely helps. But i large motivation to keep ogoing has been this blog..good work john !
Reply to this commentI think that we all know that Google PageRank is really updated on a continual basis and it is only the visible PR exposed by the toolbar that is updated every three months or so. Also, internally PR has several decimal places of precision so it is not like you went from 5 to 6, but more likely from 5.8 to 6.0 (or something like that). So in actuality I would not expect that your traffic would change that much at all.
Reply to this commentCongratulation for U, This is good blog. By The Way can you tell me how make my blog like your, and one again, can you tell me how make my adsense in the post article.
Reply to this commentI also have noticed an increase in my traffic. My Google PR was updated and is now a PR of 4!!! I was surprised when I seen that it was so high ,but it is very cool and I hope it goes higher.
Reply to this commentMy Blog has got a PR 5 its only 4 months old but most of my traffic comes from Google
Reply to this commentI don think PageRank has much effect on a traffic. Sometimes your link building (like the “make money online” anchor text technique John mentioned) and the way you write your post (e.g. if you want to rank high for a particular keyword, put it under the tag.) Trust me, I used this this on my PR 3 blog for a harry potter realted keyword and it did wonders!!
Reply to this commentFor some reason, my site gets a lot of people looking for Wordpress plugins as well.
Reply to this commentGreat illustration, I still on going work to get PR 6. Could be in next google update I will get PR6.
