First Twestival Well Drilled In Ethiopia

written by John Chow on May 13th, 2009

Remember the Twestival event held back on February 12 by over 200 cities around the world to help raise money for charity:water? You’ll be happy to know that the $250,000 raised have just drilled its first well in Ethiopia.

The charity:water team has posted the following four videos so you can share the town’s excitement over their new well and see first hand the true power of Twitter. How long do you think it takes to organize an event that spans 200+ cities? You would think it would take months, maybe years, of planning. Under normal conditions, it may take over a year to set up something this big but on Twitter the event was organized in under two weeks by utilizing the talents and financial support of the local Twittersphere.

charity: water is a non profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. They give 100% of the money raised to direct project costs, funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need. Just $20 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years. Make a donation here.

  4. great to see the global connection from social networking. We have been hearing lately about how all these sites waste time and are counterproductive, but this example shows the public how the opposite is also true! I know without Twitter, this chairity would have had a much harder time connecting to such a large and diverse group in order to collaborate for a common cause. Thanks for the share John.

Its quite interesting to see how Twitter has been pulling in alot of help to people across the globe. Twitter is set to grow further and day by day we see Twitter rank falling lower and lower in Alexa. Soon it will overtake facebook at the rate it is growing. Super stuff.
