Get Your John Chow dot Com Blidget!

How would you like to put John Chow dot Com on your blog? I have just added the ability for readers to put a John Chow dot Com Widget on their blog’s sidebars using a new tool from Widgetbox, called Blidgets.

The Blidget is a Widget that will display the latest John Chow dot Com posts on your blog. This can be very useful for blogs that don’t update often, but want to offer something for their readers to read. You can see this Widget in action at Sally’s blog.

You can grab the John Chow dot Com widget here, or by clicking on the image at the bottom of this post. Installation is very easy.

If you use the Widget, please let me know in the comments. I would love to hear your experience and see how it looks on your blog. I may even write about you. 🙂

I’m the first one to install it.

    1. Jeff says:

I was scared somebody else might have installed it and commented while I was writing it but SWEET I did break your widget virginity!!! HA

  2. John Chow says:

Hey! That actually looks pretty good!

    1. Jeff says:

I know eh? If it looked crappy i would have taken it off, trust me 😛

      My review of it :

I think it looks great, and makes my sidebar look a lot more dynamic than it would be without it. it adds another dimension to it from both a visual perspective and functional perspective.

      And it’s easy to install.

    2. Leftblank says:

I doubt you’d say it if you didn’t like it 😉 Smart promotional move though, perhaps some people will add it, which will give you some nice links/referrals back, I suppose. I’m not adding it myself though, my sidebar is already way full 😉

    3. HMTKSteve says:

So, how much are you paying us for installing this?

      1. John Chow says:

Well, if you’re ever in Vancouver, Pho is on me. 🙂

        1. Michael Kwan says:

The root of all evil is generous too?

    4. Al Davies says:

I wonder, how are these links tagged? Will they boost your technorati stats?

  3. Soultrance says:

Cool idea and a great way to share your news with other people. I’d add one to my site if the content was related, but it’s not. 🙂

  4. Alex Becker says:

Thats a cute baby you got there John.

  5. I see you’re teaching Sally the basics of blogging. One can never start too early in passing forward the family trade. 😉

    1. Michael Kwan says:

John mentioned something about advancing technology in another post (how do you copy + paste with that… something like that). I’d imagine that in the world that Sally will grow up in, blogging will become just as much a part of everyday life as using a telephone.

  6. Ryan says:

That’s cool, but it isn’t scrolling for me in Firefox.

    1. Ryan says:

Update: It scrolls fine on Jeff’s page but not on Sally’s.

      1. John Chow says:

It scrolls for me on both blogs, with FF or IE.

      2. Leftblank says:

Works fine for me as well, do you happen to be using Norton or another internet filter (AdBlock?), those might cripple the javascript too bad to function 😉

        1. Ryan says:

          Nope, I love advertisements! 😉

  7. tom ferris says:

who in the hell would want to put this junk on their site?? seriously come on dood..

    1. Andrew Chen says:

haha.. I wouldn’t say it this way but frankly that is very close to the immediate impression I got for the widget. =) You are brave John!

    2. Marc says:

It’s a simple numbers game, 90% of us won’t do it. But that leaves 10% who will. Compare the effort required to put this together with the payoff of having it on those 10%.

It’s about numbers, volume and percentages. It’s a great idea even though I won’t be installing it myself.

  8. haha, how neat! I’ll install this widgie as a thank you for my web hosting, John. You’ll just have to bare with me a bit longer. My new home is under construction here;

It still looks like arse. But once I get everything organized, I’ll slap you on there.

    Your daughter is beauuuutiful!!

    1. Michael Kwan says:

Glad to see you’re putting your contest winnings to good use. Looking forward to the new blog when it gets up and running.

  9. Gdog says:

Interesting. I’ll consider this…what do you guys think of it?

    1. Jeff says:

eh. it makes my blog look cooler and I’m totally up for sending traffic for other peopel as well… although it’s not like John needs my traffic haha.

  10. Great John, this is just the sort of thing one of my blogs needs. Ive installed it.

  11. Jeff says:

My only suggestion would be this :

if i could control the number of posts.. or in other words, the height of the widget that would be great. Of course this isn’t up to John, it’s up to that widgets site.

The reason isn’t because I don’t want to display John’s posts so much, but only because the sidebars get really long sometimes that’s all… I think I have enough shit on it as it is. if I can cut it to the top 5 i would be perfect!

  12. Nate W. says:

Very nice, John. Although the design is a little bit too “Windows Vista” for me…. 😉

    1. Allen.H says:

I actually like the design of that widget, and it seems like a great cross-promotional tool!

      1. Jeff says:

Precisely my point up there! It looks cool. I like it on my blog.

I’ve replaced this with my Technorati Favorites Iframe block. If anybody has seen it, they’ll understand why I put John’s thing over that. It looks so much nicer than the Technorati piece.

  13. Nils says:

i don’t know why anybody would want to have that on their blog..
your blog is cool and all but this is just useless..

    1. Leftblank says:

As long as some people like it, and others will read it, it’s all fine as you’ll get visitors, right? 😉

    2. Allen.H says:

I agree with leftblank, it doesn’t hurt, plus – People who will see this widget at other blogs will have the first impression that John Chow dot com is (indeed) an credible & interesting place for webmasters.

    3. Michael Kwan says:

It’s another part of the whole social networking thing that supposed to go with blogging. Blogging is slowly becoming (has already become?) less of an individual experience and more of a group effort… so to speak.

  14. Matt says:

I think I’m on board with the rest of the folks commenting here. I like the idea of this type of blidget. The guys at widgetbox did some great work with this one.

I decided to throw it up on my sports related blog. Reason for this…it might give the readers something relatively unrelated to read. Sports fans really do need to take a breather every now and again 🙂

Perhaps I’m the only sports blog to add a John Chow blidget!

  15. Nomar says:

That is a pretty cool option !!

  16. Kanwal says:

I have also made my own blidget for SharePoint Buzz fans.

If you want the latest news on Microsoft’s SharePoint Technology.

To use my widget you can get it at Widgetbox – SharePoint Buzz Widget or click this icon.

  17. skintube says:

    Hey John,

How are you getting those ads into each posting? Are you manually adding those in?

  18. Lua says:

I just added your blidget to my blog and I will be moving it to another part of the blog later on so that the sidebars do not look so crowded. Thank you for doing this and allowing others to have access to your content.

  19. Marc says:

I love the idea John. I’m going to wait though. I suspect that you may need to toss some incentives in to get a broader uptake. Since you’re really good at creative incentives, I’m holding out 😉

    1. Nate W. says:

      Incentives would be nice… 🙂

    2. Jeff says:

if any incentive is given, I should get double the prize! Why? Cause I was the first to install it off this post.. other than Sally, who already had it installed by John before he posted this.

      1. Michael Kwan says:

What makes you so sure Sally didn’t install it herself? She is being raised by a dot com mogul, after all 😉

But yes, I agree, incentives would make for greater up-take, just like getting us to add you to our Technorati favorites and so forth.

  20. David Au says:

Thank you for the info re blidget. I checked it out briefly in the morning and then installed it on my Baby Boomers Blog before I went out for Dim Sum with my wife Juliana.

Now, I have two blidgets on the Baby Boomers Blog sidebar. They look cool and match the overall color theme of my blog.

Again, take this opportunity to thank you for the very nice info. By the way, I have joined your readers community.

    Best regards.
