Hey! We’re Back!

My webhost, HostGator, experienced a major network outage at their data center in Provo. Unfortunately, that’s where my servers are located.

The outage took down thousands of site while HostGator worked on the problem for most of the day. This is the first outage I have ever experienced with HostGator. Normally, they are an extremely reliable host with great customer support. I’m sure they will find out what caused the outage and take steps to see that it doesn’t happen in the future.

During the outage, I didn’t really have much to do except hang around on Facebook and go for a nice long bike ride. I hope the blog being down didn’t inconvenience anyone. I’ll be resuming my regular schedule posting shortly.

    Glad you’re back online. Unfortunately this isn’t the first problem I’ve heard about from Hostgator, in fact they seem to be getting more and more common as of late.

    For a time i was considering switching over to them but I’ve been hearing about so many problems recently that now I’m not so sure.

    On the plus side, I didn’t notice any down time with your blog, John, so it must have happened and been resolved pretty quickly between my visits.

    It did worry me a bit since both you and Joel Comm were down at the same time. I was beginning to wonder if my internet connection had gone down since both your sites would normally always be up.
    But thanks for the explanation, and looking forward to reading more from you. 🙂

    So after poking around a bit i believe the issue is linked to Google Fiber coming to provo.

    I use Hostgator as well. I was experiencing quite a bit of trouble with my sites being down for about 3 weeks in a row.

    Every time I contacted them they told me they were working a server issue. I haven’t experienced any more trouble lately, looks like they fixed the issue.

    I am glad to hear that your site is back up. I know that it can be a headache when you experience downtime.

  8. They had some problem last week. I thought it was only on my site but this problem where all around the web hosted by Hostgator. Some people twitted that there income will loss about this kind of situation on hosting services.

    Yeah my sites was pretty much wiped out for the entire day! Food for thought to migrate to a redundant servers!

    Will have to monitor situations and the cost benefit of migrating entire networks to new infrastructure! It is such a pain to reconfigure everything …if only I had one site and not 200+

      S3 is a storage solution, not a hosting solution. You’re thinking EC2. I used to be on EC2 but it sucks and there is ZERO support.

    I now use a relatively unknown host that works out at around £40 a year, I’ve NEVER experienced any down time, everything is cloud hosted. My site performance reports beat Hostgator, Bluehost, Midphase etc etc by a huge percentage. These big well known web hosts are great for affiliate commissions heh John (they pay way over the odds) but when it comes to actually hosting they tend not to be so great and certainly not what those who understand hosting use. I’m not mentioning the name for a reason 🙂

    One of my clients still uses Hostgator and it actually embarrasses me when I compare their site speed to my personal sites.
