Home Sweet Home At The OC Fair

written by John Chow on July 14, 2012

The Big Idea Mastermind

The 2012 OC Fair opened its gates yesterday for the start of 23 days of deep-fried delicacies and fun from July 13 to August 12 (open Wednesday-Sunday). Themed “Home Sweet Home,” the annual event returns with carnival rides, games, special engagements, live entertainment and deep-fried everything, plus culinary contests, celebrity chefs and new food items such as The Big Rib, deep-fried cereal and a Bacon A-Fair. And you wonder why America is so fat?

During the first hour of this year’s Fair, everyone can take advantage of free admission and parking for Opening Hour. The adventure continues with the $2 Taste of Fair Food event when Fairgoers can sample a variety of their favorite Fair food for only $2 each. At that price, you won’t have to spend too much to kill yourself from the deep fried chocolate covered bacon.

Like other county fairs, the OC Fair features a bunch of has-been stars trying to relive their glory days. Kicking off the summer of music will be Willie Nelson. Other concerts include Sheryl Crow, Earth Wind & Fire, Tears For Fears, Duran Duran, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and a whole lot more.

The OC Fair isn’t as big as the Vancouver PNE. However, what the OC Fair lacks in variety, it makes up for in heart attack inducing food. If it wasn’t deep fried, then it was BBQ (there were even items that were “Fried-B-Que”), or covered with chocolate. The OC Fair was the first place I’ve visited where you can get a French toast covered with Nutella and bacon.

Overall, the OC Fair is great family entertainment, and I highly recommend you check it out. Just keep your kids away from on the deep fried-b-que chocolate covered stuff, and you should be OK.

The Zagg Spark. From the makers of the invisible shield.

What about this gorgeous snake, John? Was it been deep fried too? :)

I had a feeling that, if you wanted, they would have deep fried him and covered him with chocolate too!

Too much chocolate all around but should taste sweet!

Have you moved to OC, John? What about your nice home in Bellevue?
No offense, but I shouldn’t have changed Washington State with any place in US.

John Chow July 15, 2012 at 10:38 am

Bellevue was too much like Vancouver. Instead of dividing my time between the two cities, I now divide my time between the OC and Vancouver. I’ll be back in Van next month.
