House Shopping at Whitby Estates

Whitby Estates

Readers who were following me on Twitter today knew that I went house shopping in West Vancouver’s Whitby Estates. The Estates are located on a heavily sloped mountainside that offer spectacular panoramic city and ocean views. While touring one of the homes, I took a TwitPic of the view with my iPhone and got a bunch of replies back asking for more information on it.

The house in question is located at 2415 Hudson Court. It has 6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, 7,000 square feet of living space and sits on an one acre lot. The house came on the market six months ago with an asking price of $5.95 million. That was before the world hit a financial wall. The current asking price is $3.48 million, which sounds like a steal for a 7,000 square house on an one acre lot on Whitby Estates. However, with the way the market is going, you never know.

At $3.48 million, I’m pretty sure the builder is losing money and is trying to get out. The landscaping is not done and it’ll be up to the new owner to finish it. You care to take a guess at how much it cost to professional landscape one acre of land? The answer is in the video.

  1. I wouldn’t let the current condition of the housing market concern you, unless you don’t plan on living there for that long. 5 – 10 years and you will probably double your money if you decide to sell.

  2. My god – what a house and what a view!!! I wonder how much lower it could go with the current market conditions!!!

  3. Wow this house is awesome. Can you seriously afford this place John? Are you going to buy it? This would be an awesome place to live and work and continue your blog….have fun house hunting

  4. Thats an awesome estate.
I think you should buy it.. you are a millionaire :D

  5. That is a very nice house. Greg Ellison

  6. awesome house…when do you buy it John ?

  7. Very nice! John you are making way too much money! Ok maybe I’m just a little jealous. ;-)

  8. nice location…wow very expensive…….

  9. You have demonstrated the Blogging lifestyle before but this newest post is the most telling of the success that can be accomplished. Congratulations.

  10. So John, when my other site starts rocking do you have a guest room in that house? I can see us now, sitting on your deck at night, looking over the city and sucking back some paralyzers (brown cows for you) and if you can get that place for 2 million less then normally, you would be crazy not to John.Heck in 5 to 10 years when the market is back to normal you can retire just off the profits. That’s kind of sick when you think about it.

All you need now is another baby right and your set!!!!

  11. It’s a buyer’s market, especially for higher-end homes like these. Snatch it up and rent it out to international millionaires when they visit for 2010.

  12. This is amazing house John.

    Mario

  13. Very nice John. You’re an inspiration.

  14. Wow, thats nice and beautiful house. Have you buy it?

  15. Very nice pictures! Wonderful.

  16. That house is absolutely gorgeous! I would definitely get myself a house like that someday soon.. complemented by a Ferrari or a Hummer. *drools* And maybe also with an entire fleet of exotic cars. :P

  17. John! Why not you buy it?

  18. That’s awesome! what a wonderful view at sunset :)
post it when you buy it, just add half of mil more in landscaping and a Pagani Zonda in garage, and that would be really cool! :D

  19. Nice house & view! hope i can own it! hehe

  20. That’s a very nice house! You want to buy it John.

  21. GPS

    Sweet pics!

$1.5MM shaved off the asking price in 6 months? Crazy times.

  22. They sure knocked off a lot. Question for you John, how many will be living with you in the house? It’s quite large.

The views are magnificent! My goal is to purchase a house like that in 2 years.

  23. Views = great.

    Lot = spectacular.

    Exterior = very nice.

Interior = poor! what were they thinking? That kitchen is disappointing and not really up to the price point of the home. Ditto the great room.

  24. Wow what a sweet house. I wish I could have one of those

  25. Nice estate John! And by the way it is a nice investment for your future.

  26. Appreciate the motivation. Pushing the dot com lifestyle, keeping the faith.

  27. Beautfiul Home…
How big is the house you live in now?

  28. Who’s your realtor? Soprovich?

  29. I like the kitchen XD since that’s where all the good stuff is cooked up :)

  30. Wai

That house is very beautiful! It seems to be on the market at a good price!

  31. All that work is finally paying off!! Keep it up!

  32. With those beautiful views from the house, I would say that $3 million is a steal for that setup. The last two photos are breathtaking.

  33. So when are you putting in your offer John?

  34. that is SOME HOUSE! i don’t usually get house envy (or, as we call it in manhattan, apartment envy) but that place sure set me thinking of a different kind of lifestyle.

best of luck to you and your family, john, in finding exactly the right place to live.

  35. that is a spectacular house. 500K for lanscaping, hmm….. must shop around. However, I would ask for it at closing. BIN 3MIL! That is a steal lol :)

  36. John,

Sally would sure enjoy spreading her toys all over that house? If you buy it, I would landscape it for you for a lot less money!

I am an unemployed senior systems design engineer from Sony and senior technical project manager from Google contracts, and I have lots of time, shovels and gloves. I have two wheelbarrows.

I have a large pick-axe for rock and root removal. I have tireless energy and stamina.

I have planted trees and rolled grass sod at my own house. I mow my own lawn and prune my roses, trees, hedges, and shrubs. DotComPhoLandscape at John Chow’s house!

  37. Ted

Nice house, no doubt about it. However if you are not in a hurry wait a couple of months and you will get it for half the current price.

  38. Absolutely beautiful, but that price might still drop!

  39. teamray

  40. Very nice house. Just big enough for a new home office ;-)

  41. I love it! Specially the view and kitchen.

  42. Those are some beautiful houses! Many of us could only dream of getting a house like that. I especially like that picture of the fancy kitchen….for some reason I’ve always liked kitchens. :)

  43. Nice place John.

Did you make an offer yet?

My wife would kill for a kitchen like that, and is that a fireplace in the living room?

  44. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the kitchen & outside. Perfect.

  45. Man…Such a nice place ! Would be a great second home (the first one having to be in one of the few nicer place in the world : Paris ;-) !)

  46. Wow! What an amazing view from the balcony

  47. John – This is an amazing house. This would be my dream house!!

  48. That is truly very nice….
