How Google Has Been Treating Me Since Unbanning Me

written by John Chow on July 24th, 2009

As many of you know, Google lifted their ban on me about two weeks ago. I thought it might be interesting to show you how Google has been treating me since. I should note that a few of my Internet Marketing friends are concerned over me showing this information because it was revealing too much info that got me into trouble in the first place. However, revealing too much information was also what made me famous. So let the chips fall where they may.

Below is a Google Analytics chart showing traffic sent by the giant search engine from July 1 to 23. As you can see, prior to July 10, Google traffic was pretty much zero. However, it has exploded since then.

Google Traffic

I have stated that Google would only need to send me 2,000 visitors a month in order for me to make up the income lost by the removal of Text Links Ads. As you can see, Google sent more than that within a few days of letting me back into the index. I expect search traffic to continue to increase in the coming weeks and months.

The number 1 search term people used to find John Chow dot Com is, believe it or not, “John Chow”. This should tell you how much sites like johncow and notjohnchow were benefiting for being ranked for my name. Even Shoemoney is upset about it and sent the following Tweet to Google.

@Shoemoney (Jeremy Schoemaker) says:
Google can you ban johnchow.com again… my search traffic for john chow is down 90% =P

Those with a sharp eye may noticed that Google sent me 164 people searching for “Whores” (I’m ranked on page 1 or 2, depending on the data center, for that term). However, those visitors didn’t stay long because I didn’t have the whores they were looking for.

  1. Hi, Nice Post.
Just signed up for your ebook.
What did you do to get banned….?

  2. “These are not the whores you’re looking for.” Very Jedi master of you, John.

  3. So, your past was better, i mean enjoyed difficult time without search engine??

    • I don’t think so as John is getting additional 5k search engine traffic in just 10days, I think John is much more enjoying the traffic right now.
But the brand of “John made money without Google” is spoilt right now. Anyway, not a bad time right now.

      Regards,
      Lee

  4. “I didn’t have the whores they were looking for.” -hahah your my favourite blog whore!..

  5. John,

I’d say that we missed yah in google. But you proved that a business model can survive with out google. Which would make a good follow up post with the recent google slaps with competitor affiliate review sites.

Plus now you can find new readers like the 164 people looking for “whores”. I guess a new niche is created every day online

  6. And I already though you were making a lot of money, just keeps going up for you John.

  7. I don’t understand why the information you revealed in this post run the risk of trouble. It looks like a piece of great ads for Google to me. They should pay you to write something like this!

  8. As far as I can see, only others can complaint about Google’s relationship with you… :D

  9. Just goes to show that having good SEO is still important, especially if you are not a brand name like John Chow.

  10. This only proves that Google will give the best traffic for anyone.

  11. What are the chances that posts like this will get you banned again?

  12. This does show that Google is still KING!

  13. You got 164 visits of the keyword “whores”?

  14. howjohnchowswhoresmakemoneyonlineblog.com

    - My next project ;)

  15. I’m glad to hear your results from the Google. I receive more than 80% of my blog traffic from it.

Interest thing about the “whores” term :)

  16. Great to see that sudden surge in traffic. It would be more interesting to see you getting traffic for the more generic affiliate marketing terms since ur kinda a big player in this field for sometime now!

  17. John Congrats!
Don’t get banned again by Google.Because Google can give more traffic to your blog.

  18. i said this before , your traffic will increase triple times soon after google unbaned you and even more the bigger effect is for blog which use make money as keyword will found their traffic decrease far bellow…

  19. Great traffic. If you can redirect some of it to my blog, that would be cool. Thanks John.

  20. whores? which page contain this keywords?

  21. John chow knows how to get great advaNTAGES OF TROUBLES.

  22. I must say , you are a brave man, i guess you know what you are doing. :-)

  23. Jeez 3 years on the ban was a pretty tough time!!! No Google traffic at all for 3 years???

  24. John, imagine promoting adult affiliate programs and leverage ranking for “whores”. You’ll make huge a killing in commissions :-)

  25. John, congrats again! I can see that your organic traffic is huge and I believe that it will be increasing day by day in coming days. I’m guessing what is your next step to make additional $2k to cover the loss of Text Link Ads? :D

    Regards,
    Lee

  26. So its safe to say that you will break the $500k this year for sure.

  27. Woah google banned you for that long? I had no idea. And once they unbanned you there was over 8,000 visits to your in 13 days. I’m guessing your glad they lifted that ban.

  28. So how much will you pay me to write a review John. ;)

  29. I have been a lurker on your blog for 3 years and glad to see your blog in search results. The whore keyword might upset a few folks looking for whores but it’s good to rank well for any highly searchable keyword.

The shoemoney tweet quote is funny. Next month you should do another stat update for all of us. I’m curious to know after 1 month your stat’s. Ya will double your stat’s from 3 years ago and then some.

  30. Someone must think you are a pimp.Maybe it`s the cars?

  31. Looks like they must have made some changes behind the scenes — my site popped back into their good graces again on July 9th, going from nearly 0% to 30% of my traffic.

It moved to the first page for my keywords a few months after it stated, then soon after was buried in down deep in the index. Been that way for the last few years, but recently Google has been flirting with me, showing favor for a week or two, then reburying me for several weeks. Since July 9 has been my strongest return (usually #4 on keywords), just have to see how long it lasts this time…

  32. Wow, with the Google Powerhouse now sending people your way, I’d love to hear how your overall stats (site visits, optin’s, affiliate sales) may have changed/benefited.

Also, you need to affiliate with a porn site so those people WILL get the whores they were looking for.

  33. Your story really supports the idea that we must not violate TOS of the giant search engine in order to be indexed by Google.
Everybody who has violated the TOS must improve their website to conform with Google TOS.
    That’s what I think. Thanks

  34. ROFL @ whores. I think your post about google whores must be ranking for that. lol!

  35. A while ago I was checking wonder wheel for make money blogging and it showed something pretty cool.. Talking of LSI, google thinks that John’s line ‘Don’t put all your eggs in the google basket’ was related to the keyword ‘make money blogging’. It doesn’t show the same anymore, but it did around a month ago. lol

  36. How come traffic is sent for the word whore?

  37. That is pretty good amount of visitors that you get from Google. Hopefully they will convert good for you. Greg Ellison

  38. Why the bounce rate is so high? Is this normal? John, can you shed some lights and your thoughts on bounce rate?

  39. So, Google shows why it is the boss..!!

  40. John I think the keyword John Chow is quite misleading because many people have searched your name in Google after you got unbanned to see whether your back or not!

  41. That’s a lot of traffic in a short time. I’m sure it’ll just going to keep increasing!

  42. Nice, getting back into Google looks like it’s bringing you almost 1,000 people a day so far, I’m sure that’s going to increase substantially.

  43. Great to see google let you back in John, but the aholes should have never banned you in the first place.

  44. John,

I am glad to see that Google is sending traffic your way again.

I think that when people search for “John Chow” they should be able to find “John Chow” and not find “Not John Chow” by mistake.

I chose my blog name for fun and not as an attempt to benefit from your demise.

    Congrats on your continued success.

  45. This is an amazing story, (this, and the previous post that explains the whole thing), unbelievable!

  46. More people are searching for “Make Money Online” than “Whores”. :)

What’s funny is that 16.5% of those that searched for “Whores” and found your site actually stayed and didn’t “bounce”, hehe.

  47. Congrats. You’re back on google search again john…

  48. John Chow, you are the man… Can you Tell me how you did it. lol

  49. Men that’s a nice amount… hope I get there sometime…

  50. Wow that’s awesome. Already hitting up to 1,000/day from Google. I see your alexa ranking went up as well.

  51. Hehe, that’s very funny that “whores” is one of your top results. I wonder why that happened?

  52. I have a sneaky feeling you are starting to wish you made up with Google a while ago. :P

P.S. Glad to see your blog is back up!

  53. Congrats on the re-inclusion, good move dumping TLA too. I’m surprised to see that you’re not getting more than 1000 visits per day from Google so i’m guessing more and more of your pages will slowly be added to the index over time.

I also suspect that your other sites, in which you showed you can indeed “behave” played a role in the decision to give you another chance. I think Google needs to be credited for being professional here and not holding a grudge, you gave them a lot to chew on for sure :-)

  54. Uh… Google also sent 43 people for making money online who stayed still less and bounced out…. you didn’t have the making money online they wanted? :P

    Teasing.

Congratulations on getting back in with the big G

  55. awesome! johncow and notjohnchow must be beathing a big sigh of relief.

  56. Undeniable you are the real dot com mogul but watch out John i will be next generation of dot com Mogul ! :)

  57. This proves that you can in fact make money without Google. What people should get out of this is that all the hype behind ranking for a couple of keywords is BS. You get traffic by creating content people want, and growing large. The traffic comes from the long tail.

  58. Some really great tips for writing and selecting keywords in the title and repeating in the body of the work. Much is spoken about great content, but without selective, well researched keywords in the title, along with “73 ways to… real content can beoverlooked by readers. Thanks for reveaing some key tools that can make blogging success a little easier. Errol.
