How I Keep From Getting Lost In Toronto

To prevent myself from getting lost while driving around Toronto, I rely on the Magellan Roadmate 760 GPS Receiver. This handy device guides me turn by turn to anywhere I want to go. The unit even has text-to-speech technology that tells you when to take that next turn, including the name of the street and distance to the turn. Most GPS with voice turn by turn would say, “Turn left in two miles.” The Megellen unit will say, “Turn left in two miles on Steele Avenue.” Mind you it sound really funny when it says some of the street names, but at least you know what street to keep an eye out for.
You can program the GPS by using the simple menus to enter an address on the touch screen, or find nearby gas stations, restaurants, ATM’s, and more by selecting from 7 million, pre-programmed points of interest. To find the CN Tower, I simply entered CN Tower and then choose shortest time. I will be using the Roadmate to get around Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City as well.
You can read my TTZ review of the Magellan Roadmate 760 GPS here.

Satnav is quite useful. I had one with my laptop on my roadtrip down to San Diego. Without it, I wouldn’t have found that awesome Chinese restaurant in San Jose.
Reply to this commentSounds like you’re in my neck of the woods…I’ll be moving to San Francisco soon…Yours was in a laptop huh…didn’t realize they came in laptops.
Reply to this commentWell…a Pharos USB GPS unit attached to a laptop.
Reply to this commentcool!
Reply to this commentI hadn’t heard of one in a laptopm either. This makes a bit more sense now.
Reply to this commentI use a similar system, and it has saved me MANY times.

Reply to this commentThat’s why I need one!!!
Reply to this commentMagellan FTW! Great system.
Reply to this commenthaha…I have to invest in one of those. Because I’m one of those girls that perpetuates the stereotype that women can’t drive
Reply to this commentLOL… I know what you mean. I can’t find my way out of a paper bag without a roadmap and my wife!
Reply to this commentThe wife is an interesting mention as with my wife being the worst back seat driver I am lucky to get to whatever destination point (with or without a GPS!)

Reply to this commenti thought the thumbrule is never to ask a woman for direction? hehe
Reply to this commentBut can you navigate? My wife drives great - but is not so hot with a map.
Reply to this commentmaps don’t make me horny either.
Reply to this commenthaha, the best line i’ve heard ever!
Reply to this commentTurn left in two miles on Steele Avenue

Get your money back on the Magellan John. For that kind of money it should be telling you the street name with 100% accuracy.
It’s Steeles Ave - and it should be telling you if it’s East or West.
Reply to this commentBut I didn’t pay for it.
Reply to this commentYou gotta love the power of a top blog. Evil man, very evil!
Reply to this commentMaybe he stole it? (Way more eviller)
Reply to this commentIf you want to get really, really evil, try and get your money back anyways
Reply to this commentFreebies hur … i wanna be a top dot com evil blogger too
Reply to this commentOf course you didn’t pay for it, John.
I guess that just doesn’t make you evil; if anything, the heavens smile down upon you.
Reply to this commentI have a feeling that was a typo on John’s part and not the fault of the GPS.
Reply to this commentlol…I was thinking the same exact thing…hahah
Reply to this commenthow does one get lost in Toronto? pretty much all streets run East-West and North-South, one of the easiest city to get around.
Reply to this commentWhen you don’t know where the street you’re trying to get to is, it’s very easy to get lost.
Reply to this commentI agree. I used to get lost in Tulsa, which is viewed from above looks like a grid.
Reply to this commentIt’s funny, if you go past the street you should have turned on, it’ll say “If possible, make a legal U-Turn”.
There aren’t very many places where a U-Turn is legal, so you really feel like it should be saying “You Moron, you pasted the street you were supposed to turn on, now turn around!”.
Reply to this commenthaha thats funny

Reply to this commentA good friend of mine got this GPS (from Costco as well) and likes it better than the GPS in his Cayenne…even though it doesn’t play videos, allow for your PS3 to be hooked up, or make you coffee.

Reply to this commentthank you
Reply to this commentWish I could say the same; I’m at home doing nothing and I STILL get lost. Seriously though, I could definitely use something like the Magellan GPS Receiver. I’ve read other GPS reviews, but only a handful were as convincing.
Reply to this commentjohn you should start a forum. i can imagine it now.

Reply to this commentIn Brazil GPS devices are prohibited by traffic authorities. They say GPS could cause accidents by distracting the drivers.
I’m not kidding.
Reply to this commenthow can anyone in Brazil afford a gps? i was there 2 years ago and everyones dirt poor.
Reply to this commentI prefer the good old $10 map!
Reply to this commentgood luck reading those suckers!
Reply to this commentI cant stand the big $10 map lol, GPS or mapquest is the way to go!
Reply to this commentMulti-fold road maps…now those are driving hazards, no? GPS can definitely make life easier on the road (if you know how it works).
Reply to this commentGreat GPS mate, I need to get myself one of those babies!
Reply to this commenthm it’s about 500$ though… out of my budget
Reply to this commentand mine!
Reply to this commentRunning late, road rage, extra gas expenses for getting lost all the time, less time spent on the phone for asking directions — could be worth it to install a GPS after all.
Reply to this commentI had to laugh, when you used “CN Tower” as your example for using the GPS reciever. I live in Toronto and the CN Tower has to be the easiest thing to spot, since it holds the title for tallest tower in the world. I can even see it from Richmond Hill, which is like 50 KM away (well except for the smog days)
