How I Make $40,000 a Month From a Blog

written by John Chow on June 23rd, 2009

Here’s a video of my presentation from last night’s Vancouver Business, Marketing and Entrepreneur meetup. My topic was how I make $40,000 a month from a blog and I had a sold out house. It wasn’t the original topic I had planned to speak on but since the organizer had put that up on the meetup site, I was pretty much stuck with it.

The video contain information that I have never written about before – it revealed my blog business model. As you can read from the reviews, the information was extremely well received and everyone thought it was well worth the price of admission. And you’re going to get it for free!

The entire presentation was over 1.5 hours long. I edited it down to an hour by taking out the Q&A at the end. I recommend you grab a drink, a bite to eat and pull up a chair because you’re going to want to watch this from beginning to end.

Email software mentioned in the video: Aweber

  1. Finally something (again)on how good your blog performs. I was wondering where the monthly blog results post of past times were gone.

Like always – good publicity and it will probably attract more readers to your blog.
Have to restart the vid tonight as I have tto hurry now.

  2. Awesome Video. I also consider blogging as Internet Marketing. I have not been able apply it properly yet.

Thanks for the tips. I feel more motivated now. Wish me luck that I will good at blogging.

  3. You have laid out many of your business points in this. I’m not sure why I didn’t sign up to Aweber before, but I’m signing up after watching that.

If John Chow were to start today, I don’t think it is possible to achieve $40,000 per month relatively this quick. It might take longer…a lot longer if even possible. But everything is possible.

  64. Hey John.

This video took me about 5 hours to download before I could watch it. But it was really worth the wait. ( SLOOOOOW internet connection ).

I’m just wondering, why most marketers don’t share in the way you do, Is it because they have only money in their sights or what?

If more people share the way you do, more people will start making a better income, and more people will feel they belong to a community.

Internet Marketers should be a community and NOT rivals.

  65. Whew, finally finished watching the video. I now understood the concept of using the pop up signup box. I used to think of it as some evil element I need to stay away from. The reader who can handle the in-your-face signup box is the reader that counts. Thank you for that John! The back-end system residual income, etc…awesome! It pays to listen to the gurus. :)

Great vid. I almost want to call you the Frank Kern of blogging. I like your style of teaching. Very transparent. One thing that hit home. You said most people could make what you make but don’t because they give up early or don’t follow through. Similar to what Rich Schefren talks about in his business manifeso ebook. Treating your hobby like a business and not like a get rich quick opportunity. Good stuff dude.

  76. Well….its really amazing and im getting thrilled that you could make 40K $/month…and im following the video.

  77. Thanks for the sales funnel discussion – quite cool how it all fits together.

    A couple of questions:

    1) I am going to write an ebook related to the topic I blog about – should the subsequent auto-responders be further detail on sections of the ebook to keep it consistent

    2) if you’re not blogging about how to make money blogging, what affiliate links and/or steps should we include in the funnel?

    3) do you end with the ‘big product’? what if you don’t have a 6 month course to offer?

    darren

  78. Yes this is the post which I was looking for from past few days. The day when you have announced that you are going to give a speech about your money making of $40000.

  79. This is exactly what I would love. Time and financial freedom.

I’ve currently been working my first full time job for a year now and I must say, although the job can be great fun at times, it feels like a prison in a way that I *have* to go to for the hours of 9-5.

I have a passion and desire to work for myself and I think blogging/working online is what the future will hold for me.

I’ve known I’ve wanted to do it for a while – I’ve bought a few domains a couple of years ago actually but just never got around to starting them. I have started now – recently bought hosting for my domain beginnerblogger.com and this will be the start of my learning experience online. I really want to connect with people and learn through others and hopefully I can give something back too.

This is my first comment on a blog, I’m usually a bit of a lurker I guess. This is a breakthrough moment for me.

Thanks John – truely inspired me tonight. (apologies for the length ;)

  80. Great video! I do have one comment, however. You state most blogs are lucky to get $1-2 in revenue per 1000 pageviews these days. In my experience, it’s pretty easy to get $15-20 per 1000 pageviews using adsense alone, even today. I agree the days of throwing up just any sort of content and making the big bucks from adsense are long gone, but in certain niches, adsense is still extraordinarily lucrative.

  124. making big money online still my dream….. very difficult

  125. I actually disclosed one of my secret today, have taken the details positively, and it is generally simple though it takes lot of time and efforts, i want to work on filling the time gap and moving little faster.

  126. I just watched most of this video. Very informative stuff. I may have to revisit it once I figure out how to catch more e-mail addresses. The trick is finding something free to offer in exchange.

  127. fas

It’s all about providing quality content for your visitors. And yet there seems to be an endless amount of people out there slapping together scrapper blogs and crap content trying to siphon money from the internet instead of adding real value. At the end of the day, I find it’s far easier to just write stuff that people actually WANT to read. Just my opinion, anyone else feel the same way?

  128. I had been always wondering about this point.Glad you shared your sources.I knew some of them but this much i am little surprised.
But guess for new bloggers very few of them will fit.Traffic is a major concern.I hope to use some of the impression based in coming months.
Hope you are having fun out there

  129. Nice video John. Boy, it took some time out for me to sit n watch the entire thing.. but really a great video, worth every minute!

  130. thanks for share john cow, I like your article and video

  131. An informative and insightful presentation. Very motivating for new bloggers. As I gain more readers I will definitely consider monetizing my blog. You made some great points when you mentioned why bloggers don’t make money. Now that I think about it those are top reasons why bloggers don’t make money.
