How Much Spam Do You Get Per Day?

written by John Chow on March 19th, 2008

Normally, I empty my spam folder every time I go to check my email. There are always more spam than legit emails and most of the time, I never bother to check the spam folder - I just empty it without looking. However, last night I was wondering how many spams I actually receive per day, so instead of emptying the spam folder, I decided to let it build it up for 24 hours.

The 24 hours are up and I now have the answer on how much spam I receive in one full day.

spam-count.png

While the number of spams are high, it’s not as shocking as it used to be. This is because my web host, BlueFur, placed a spam killer right on the server. The spam that GMail kill were the spam that got through the server’s spam filter. If the filter wasn’t there, the spam count would be over 4,000 per day. How much spam do you get per day?

Before I sold my business last year I was getting about 1,000 spam emails per day–though virtually all of it was caught through the filter and required no action on my part.

But having a “real” email address on my site where customers and prospects could actually email me was more than worth it–it made me hundreds of thousands of dollars.

You get a 1000 spam emails/ day? Geez, it seems like I’m a lucky guy. :) I get “only” 100-150 spam emails per day.

It sucks when you have high amounts of spam, because if a legit email gets filtered it’s unlikely that you’ll read it.

I currently get around 700 spam messages a day.

Yikes.

I’m guessing I get around 200-250 per day, but I’ve never really counted.

I hate these spammers, cialis this viagra that, penis cream. Most spam still comes from the US, but China and Russia are also very bad.

3 per day to my gmail. Hotmail gets about 10 per day. Geez, I feel lucky! I’ve had my gmail address since the beginning of gmail too. I guess mine isn’t on all the spammer email lists because I don’t post it online. :)

I get about 100-300 spam messages a day. I’m glad they all get dropped in the spam box so that I don’t have to deal with them!

I don’t get all too many spam emails, probably about 20 or so per day. Now spam comments to my blog is out of control. Luckily they’re mostly all caught, but they’re really irritating.

Sorry for the off topic but I have a question maybe someone can answer:
About Johns 125×125 sidebar ads, is anybody buying these? A lot of them look like affiliate links (correct me if I’m wrong). Right now I see about three (of the 8 total) that have a thousandollarprofits link. Are those purchased or do they show when no ads are sold? Thanks in advance for anybody who answers as I’m curious how his ad system works.

They are purchased ads. All of them have different affiliate IDs.

Funny you should bring this up. I just wrote an article on how checking your spam folders can actually create post ideas…and maybe investment ideas as one of my blogs discusses investing in the stock market.

I used to get several hundred each day, but now I get none. Like BlueFur, we installed spam protection direct on the server. A few days for the software to learn what was and wasn’t spam, and hey presto we have no spam in our inboxes. :D

When I first signed up for gmail I kept a record of how many spam emails I got for a whole year. I averaged about 25 a day - a lot less than it felt like and I made a pretty graph of the results:
http://www.andymurd.uk6.net/Stuff/spam.shtml
Unfortunately, the graph got skewed because a Ukrainian spammer decided to use an address at my domain as the sender of his dirty pimpings.
Gmail is definitely very good at catching spam, I’ve not looked back since I switched.

There are 916 spam e-mails in my folder right now, which deletes old spam after 30 days. That works out to about 30 spam messages per day.

I’ve been pretty fortunate so far to be honest, receiving somewhere between 10 and 40 per day across a few different mail products. I know I’d be in an unhappy place if many of my email addresses weren’t protected by some sort of spam filtering though.

I think I’m in the 100-200 ballpark for my personal ISP email, with my business one, it use to be a thousand + until we implemented spam filters on the server as well

My inbox is getting shockingly cluttered with all this pathetic spam but when I tried using my host’s spam killer, it also killed off the good stuff.

I think my inbox is doomed.

I get spam from an auto blog I had setup awhile ago (Wordpress e-mails telling me to moderate comments). I sold the site, but the new owner never changed the e-mail.

Spam (9897)

Yeah… :p

Until fairly recently not having a published email address on a site that sells products hurt sales. Most of us who get lots of email have at least one email address that is “public” and those are sometimes/often the victim of spam spiders.

Good filters worked for me.

Hi John,
Thanks for the great posts demonstrating your online profit generating technics. I’m a newcomer here and I’m wondering what you mean exactly by “Private Ad Sales” and “Affiliate Commissions”. Could you please explain a bit? Or point me to somewhere?

Appreciate your help!

It depends on which email address it is.
Addy 1: 40 a day
Addy 2: 3 a day
Addy 3: 500 a day
Addy 4: 200 a day
Addy 5: 1900 a day. I think I have about 80,000 in my current spam folder. Thank goodness for expiration deletion.
