How To Do A Email Promotion
written by John Chow on September 10th, 2007
One of the best way to drive traffic to a blog is by sending out an email to other bloggers in your niche to tell them about a hot story you just posted. This was how I build The TechZone. Whenever I post a new review, I would send out an email blast to other technology sites so they can post about it.
How does one properly do this email promotion so it get the highest response possible? Mark at 45n5 put together this little video to show you how to do just that. It even has a real life example.
Remember to keep the three points of effective email promotion in mind: promote your best content, don’t sell and never email somebody more than once per month for promoting your content.

Reply to this commentAmazing tip… I have actually known about this for awhile and it’s even in John’s eBook. It really does work and probably one of the best ways to get link backs and some promotion for free in this competitive blogosphere.
Reply to this commentApparently we all kinda knew about email promoting. What many have to face is fight the fear to email the BIG guys.
It is a great tip and a lovely video. Thank you for writing about this John and thank you Mark for taking your time to make this video and share this secret.
Reply to this commentI thought this was going to be about email spam, but was gladly mistaken. A good video, and another great linkbait by 45n5.
Good job man!
Reply to this commentThanks for the mention John. I was just watching your video with Leo and you mention this VERY thing in it, email fellow bloggers to bring attention to your best content.
And it really can work, as you also say. The page i promoted will have over 1000 uniques today, for the second day in a row, just to that single page on my site

Reply to this commente-mailing has worked for me pretty well. I picled up a few links and had over 2000 unique hits on a single page last week. I’ve dropped off to 500 on that page but before I was in the 30-50/day range. Great video!

Reply to this commentThis is a great promotional idea, but the key is to have good content. As soon as you send an email to some good blogs, attempting to promote uninteresting content, you can forget ever getting linked from those blogs again.
Reply to this commentI tried this out yesterday, won’t bother putting the links here because I don’t want anyone to think I’m in this for free traffic off this blog but I’ll tell you what happened - you can find the article on my blog if you are that interested.
I wrote an article about the new video game Halo 3 and the release of it, the content was somewhat unique in that a recent search of Technorati and Google blogsearch yielded no other information about what I was writing about, which directly related to one retailer’s way of getting customers to buy Halo 3 from them. After publishing the article, I did a Google blogsearch for Xbox 360 and Halo 3 from the last week, to ensure I would find fresh blogs and referances, also doing the same on Technorati. I chose 4 of the larger blogs and found their contact forms / emails on the site and sent each an email letting them know about the article I wrote. In each case, I made no attempt to sell the content of the article or ask for a link back to my article, just wrote them to share what I’ve written.
Within 5 minutes, one of the larger Xbox 360 blogs, which carries a PR6 and a Technorati ranking of 1,300, wrote me back with a question about the post, I replied to them and 15 minutes after that they wrote an article on their blog and gave me a link as the Source.
The other three didn’t pickup the article. In less than 10 minutes of actual work, I got a link on a PR6 blog and drove several hundred hits to my blog. 25% success rate is rather good at my first chance of doing this. I’m very happy with the results and plan on using it more in the future.
Reply to this commentUpdate: After checking my stats a little more this morning, I found a 2nd site linking to the original article I wrote, this one is a bit more viral though. A blog picked up the article published by the site I first talked about, linking to both them and me in their Source links at the bottom of the article. This is the start of a positive viral marketing campaign. My work in getting links on 4 blogs has now improved 100%. Since my original goal was 4 and I only got one, my success rate was only 25%. The article getting picked up by a second blog, one I didn’t even write to, increases my goal of 4 blogs to 50% success, an increase of 100% over only a few hours ago.
