How To Leverage The Power of Association

I never did believe the saying that you are what you eat. However, I do believe that you are who you associate with. The power of association is extremely powerful in the way it dictates who you are and how much money you make. If you want to change yourself or you lifestyle, then it may be time to change the people you associate with.

Birds of a Feather Do Flock Together

Have you ever noticed that successful people hang around other successful people? Birds of feather really do flock together. If you’re a beer drinking, foul mouth talking wage slave, then chances are, all your friends are beer drinking, foul mouth talking wage salves as well. This is not by accident. You attract to you what you are.

One of the biggest barriers to success is quite often the people you hang around with. They laugh at your crazy dreams and say you’re wasting time trying to make money online. Come and have a beer instead. More often than not, you’ll let your friends keep you down. If you want to break out of the rat race, then you need to stop spending so much time with your current buddies and start associating with people who have the same dreams and goals as you.

Networking for Fun and Profit

One of the reasons I attend a lot of trade shows every year is not just to keep up with the industry. These shows provide a great venue to network with like minded and successful people. I also attend many local networking events (Dot Com Lunch is an example). Remember, a big part of who you are is determined by the people you hang with. No man is an island. The journey to success is a team effort.

To keep building my success, I make sure I associate with other successful people. Sometimes, that means not hanging around with old friends as much, or letting them go completely. It really depends on your goals. If you aspired to more than what your friends want to achieve, then you’re going to have to find others at your level or above and start associating with them. Success breeds success. This is why the rich get richer. If you want to become rich, then you need to hang out with the rich.

there is a brilliant saying which is in association with this article – Man become what he think about most of the time

    1. Yes, true – and visualization does really work! See and think of yourself as you want to be.
Associating with successful people who have or are doing what you are doing, or attempting to do, is a key. You will learn so much from them. You can’t learn from those who have not done it. Associate with the right people and it will move you like never before!

  2. Dwayne says:

I believe there is value in surrounding yourself with successful people. It is a lot harder to move forward when your circle of friends lack ambition. Look for people to pull you up, not down. It’s ok to pull some friends up but you can’t force them if they are not ready. Don’t let anyone pull you down.

    Now that was REAL John.

I recently noted to some friends who are like minded how I font seen to have gods reality with most ppl on our small town which used to frustrate me until I realized this actually proved I’m just on another wavelength from them so we don’t mix.

But if you try making yourself fit into circles that are not conducive to your goals then you’ll only move father away from your goals. Basic social metaphysics….

  4. You are so on point, John!

More than 90% of one’s success is determined by the folks they hang out around with. While the poor claim the rich are snobs and would have nothing to do with them, I look at it that the rich already know the power of association and would rather have nothing to do with the poor!

This is an excellent entry…and it is quite a pleasant coincidence that I have a similar entry on my blog today: “YOU ARE YOUR OWN WORST ENEMY”

    Hi John!

    As always, great post!

  6. Stephen says:

This is such a valid point and one I can completely associate with.
I am that beer-swilling (albeit not foul-mouthed) individual and the company I keep on these occasions is unbelievably negative. I think I should find an up-market wine bar!

Partnerships always have bigger chances for successful business!

  8. Josh says:

Ill have to start getting to more of those trade shows. Thanks for the post

  9. Vicki says:

That’s an awesome invitation and I agree that it is important to hang out with like minded people. Also do believe you are what you eat in terms of choosintg to eat for good health or for bad health (junk in – junk out).

    Hi John,

I love this blog post. In fact, I intend to write something closely related to the topic; the power of association, in the near future.

Years back, something struck my mind and I thought of a need to flash back to review and analyse my life undertakings- the failure and the success part of my actions.

I discover something common (not exclusive though) is association and partnership. Even at the college level, I recorded more success on the effort I put with link minded collegues.

Whatever you do, you might consider leveraging the power of association to accelerate your success. The concept is even more worthy when it comes to intetnet marketing and making money online.

Live is sweet and is sweeter when live with the loved ones. Create lovely environment around your business. Build strong association in your business niche, with your clients and other people who circumvent the business.

Once again, thanks John for sharing.

  11. TIP: Even if you don’t know successful people in real life you can still associate with them by connecting with them on social media 24 hours a day. I’ve never met Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg, Donald Trump, etc.. However, they’re in my circle because I follow them on Twitter (LMAO)

  12. I completely with your thoughts about the power of association to success. For me, I start associating and communicating friends through social media. I will try to connect to people with the same interest as mine. I need to be with people who are successful in their blogging venture and hopefully get and idea how they become successful in their respective blog.

This is delightful to see. Too bad I am in Kenya (Africa) and will be unable to attend the Home Summit. However, I would like to Associate with you and help me build an online Empire that I have been trying to build since 2011.

I believe 2014 is the year for my big break and I welcome any help. I want to try the Affiliate Marketing Angle for starters as I already promote a few products on clickbank and I need to monetize those blogs and create more

Thank you for your continued advice. I also promote one of your products I Am John Chow

I’ve found that this is very true. Another way to look at this (and how it’s been a huge benefit to me) is that by hanging around positive, successful people you tend to NOT hang around with negative people who just suck the life right out of your…uh…life.

    Hi John,
Internet marketing is not leading a monotonous and boring life sitting in front of a computer trying to make money. It is precisely the opposite, as I read in the article it is meeting like minded people and networking. Judging by the video I can see the camaraderie and excitement by attending these summits. Yes this is definitely the way to go!

      Hi Shaun,

Greetings from East London. I have been following John’s postings, blog etc. for quite a while now. I am a 50 year old unemployed and have been dabbling in internet marketing for about 3 years now. Needless to say that I have to date lost close to R 10,000.00 in scams, get rich quick schemes etc. I have sent emails to a lot of these so called Guru’s just wanting to know if South Africa stands any chance in this business, without any replies. Can you please give me a little insight i.e. are you making any money, is it worth the effort etc. I am not scared to put in the hours and I can also help myself pretty well on a computer. I would really appreciate a reply if possible.

      1. Chinedu says:

Sir! It is sad having dabbled for three years without any fruitful gain.
If you really can put in the effort, I would like to ask you a few questions:
Are you ready to learn how it is done?
To put in the efforts needed to learn new skills?
To invested some substantial amount of money and create a new path for yourself?

If your answers are yes to the above questions, contact me as soon as you can through a reply to this.

  16. Hi, Johnny Cash!

Thanks for your invitation!!! Looking forward to meeting you in person in a future Home Business Summit or a Dot Com Lunch. Meanwhile, we can “deeply” network on Face:

  17. Great post John. I waste no time in cutting people out of my life who aren’t on the same level as me or higher. Matter of fact, I keep a pair of scissors in my pocket. lol

If you want to succeed, you gotta hang around successful people. You just gotta. If you can’t hang around them, then study them from afar. Read any books that they have written. Watch their videos. Find a way.

  18. Frederick says:

Wow that’s just what I needed to hear trying to back up from a very very negative friend, that complains about everything and thnks the world owes him something. everybody is to blame for his misfortune. I want to be around like minded people, success orientated.

  19. faisal says:

No doubt that networking works a lot in business.

  20. Hi John, I have been following your blog for the last 2 years and I sincerely respect what you have achieved for yourself by being down to earth and using your infectious charm to build and promote your business which is great!

However you advise people to mix with positive like minded individuals which we all should do, however it’s unfair to suggest or imply that to get rich you need to mix with the rich in order to sell tickets to your followers who at the same time may feel alienated or become disillusioned with the whole idea of making money online purely and simply because they don’t have the money to attend these ‘Exclusive Events’!

I feel you should be honest and upfront with how this business works, it requires patience, effort, a lot of hard work, determination and self belief! were even the ‘Poor’ people can succeed. Its better to show people how to build their network/list so they can start seeing results first to give them a sense of achievement and confidence, and then maybe advising them how to reinvest in their business? As opposed to implying that Internet Marketing is a ‘Rich Mans Club’

In some respects you are right! and if you were to expose the amount of money you personally reinvest in your business to sustain yourself at the top most people just starting out will quickly be discouraged.

I hope I haven’t dampened the importance of these events but I would prefer to see them promoted in ‘fair’ and ‘sincere’ way so that ‘all’ people understand what’s required to build their business correctly and that they allocate any spare funds on the basic fundamentals required to start seeing results.

    Thanks again for your attention.

    1. aceclue says:

      Hi Kyri,

I really value your contribution to this discusion. If I got you right, you agreed with the concept of association as explained in the post just like most contributors here.

You only seems to disagree with this method ‘for the rich only’.

I believe in one thing. Just give me the ‘ clue and a right sense of direction’. For years I ‘ve spent online, I hardly found an internet marketer who voluntarily disclosed the insider secret he personally used to make money online.

Some do anyway to make more money. They give the result of their findings to make money
online but never reveal the way they research to get the tricks.

One of those sincere bloggers is John. he boasts how he make money online to make more money.

I personally had more success with the execution of results I found myself. But I need right clue to move in the right track.

John blog address internet community and money makers of all sorts not left behind the aspiring internet enterpreneur. I can’t attend the summit but the concept is well understood.

The summit may require ‘money’. That is exactly what some are looking for right now. Money is made with money.

John I have been trying to purchase the ticket for the home summit and the page for purchase it’s not working, it tells me that it an error, who do I contact to purchase?

  24. Hey John

Thanks for your email and the heads up on this article which of course I agree with! Other than some typos which can be easily fixed, it’s a good article. Unfortunately, it is heart breaking to have to leave past friends behind as they simply do not have the drive, ambition, or a proactive mind to get them to where they want to go so they end up ‘buying their own BS stories – running old tapes that tell them they can’t do this or that, and basically stay in the same spot for years on end. I can’t imagine working for the same firm for 20-30 years to get the glory of a fake gold watch when I retire! LOL!

Good article and birds of a feather DO flock together, however, sometimes you have to remember it can be difficult to just ‘break into’ the successful groups and individuals you want to surround yourself with. Everything we want to do in our lives involves some kind of investment, and almost always, a fair amount of ‘cash’. For instance, all your talks are in the USA, I cannot afford to fly there, pay for hotel etc.etc., if I could, I would likely be doing just fine with whatever I was doing on my own – as with anyone in my situation.

Back to the article – great, fix the mistakes, and you’re good to go! LOL! Thanks again John and I wish I could go to at least a couple of these events as well but it’s just not possible at this time. You are what you ‘think’ you are – the brain does not distinguish between fact and fiction. A positive attitude is crucial to success in ALL aspects of life.

Great job as always and I wouldn’t expect anything less from you John. I’m so proud of you, ‘BC’ boy! LOL! My Best wishes always!

  25. Hi John.

I 100% agree. You become who you associate with. Difficult part for many is that they are comfortable in their zone – their friends, their family, their associates. Unless they find a way to break away and find new associations that would help them reach their goals, they will be stuck in one place. Breaking away is tough for many and hence they fail. Thanks for sharing this.

For the rest of the readers – I’ve took similar offer from John before – to have dinner with him. I would take this again but unfortunately I am not going to be in California later this month. Go to dinner with John. You will learn a lot!
