How To Make 2014 Your Best Make Money Online Year

written by John Chow on January 2, 2014

Secure Affiliate Marketing

A new year brings with it a new beginning, and a new start. You can look at it as the same old same old, or you can look at it as an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start fresh. Here are four tips to make 2014 your best make money online year.

1 – Don’t Reinvent The Wheel

I get presented with the craziest idea. Each was supposed to revolutionize the way money is made on the Internet. All they needed was some seed capital to get it off the ground. Keep this tip in mind when trying to make money online in 2014: don’t reinvent the wheel.

Oh sure, you can become a billionaire if your idea hits like Google or Facebook. But most likely, you’ll join the millions that failed for every Google success story. If do you want to reinvent the wheel, then I recommend you become successful first. Then you have money to play with. In the meantime, follow tip number two.

2 – Use Proven Business Models

The secret to making money online is not to try to reinvent it. Instead, what you should be doing is following business models that have proven to work, and try to improve upon it. For example, the affiliate marketing model is a proven business model, but the model the industry promotes as the one that can make you rich is extremely flawed. I modified the model to make it work. I wrote an entire eBook on this subject.

The Ultimate Online Profit Model details the business models I use to make six-figure monthly income, and live the Dot Com Lifestyle. You can download a free copy here. Here’s a screenshot of the payout I’ve received from September 16 to January 1 from just one of the business models.

3 – Start Your List Today

I’ve said many times before that the money is in the list but it bears repeating. The money really is in the list. Look at all the really big affiliate marketers. Guys like Frank Kern, John Reese, Shoemoney, etc. They all have huge mailing lists. And because they have huge lists, they don’t have to spend hundreds or thousands per month on advertising. John Reese refers to his list as his ATM. He just goes to it whenever he needs to make a withdraw.

If you want to become a big player in this industry, you absolutely need an email list. That is your customer base. Without one, you’ll just be another hit-and-run affiliate marketer working for peanuts. Stop building other people’s customer base and start building your own.

My recommended email service is Aweber. I’ve been using them for years and they are by far the best in the business.

Aweber offers a $1 trial account for all new customers. The account is just like a normal Aweber account and includes unlimited email campaigns, newsletters, broadcasts and follow ups. It’s a great way to test drive Aweber to see what it can do for you. Your satisfaction is guaranteed. If you find that email marketing is not for you, contact Aweber within 30 days and they’ll give you the $1 back.

4 – Stop Thinking, Start Doing

Most people think more about a project than actually doing the project. How long have you been thinking about making money online? Now, how long have you been doing it? If you’re thinking more than doing, then it’s time to reverse the two. The best way to do that is by taking the first step. Watch the video to find out what that is.

Awesome article… I agree: Don’t reinvent the wheel… Systems that can be duplicated are the best… They create residual income…

David Hunter January 5, 2014 at 10:30 am

Exactly! Someone else has done it before, just follow their lead.

Also, number 4 – “Stop Thinking, Start Doing” is huge! It’s better to get something done than to get something perfect.

2013 was my best year EVAH online and 2014 is off to a HUGE start! I had two five figure months in 2013, using a variety of marketing methods I learned at JohnChow.com over the years. 2014 is so far ahead of pace over 2013 (and it’s only 2 days old) that it should be AT LEAST three times better (maybe more). Here’s to the “DotCom Lifestyle!”

John Chow January 5, 2014 at 6:40 pm

Are we going to see the Hot Dog Man at ASW?

Pang Yang January 2, 2014 at 10:56 am

I’m tired…tired of thinking about each day before I can even get out of bed. Tired of my dreaded 8-10 hour job. Tired of the little quality time I have to spend with my family. I’m tired of watching my time ticking away to only find I have a few hours left for the day. It’s really time I forget the traditional way of trying to earning my happiness by working for some else future. I’m tired of that waiting to get ready b/s and all the fears I had about getting started. In the next few hours…it’s really time to invest in me – it’s time to take that leap of fate.

Sergio Castorena January 2, 2014 at 12:19 pm

Hey Pang, don’t get me wrong, but that’s a great story, that someday will serve to inspire other people just like you. And as it’s said “the secret of life though is to fall seven times and get eight” and remember that everyday is a new opportunity to change your life :)

All the best

Very thoughtful article at a perfect time…Everything you share today is more reinforcement for me than anything else, especially “the start doing” part. I remember it took my business partner and I several months of un-cleared focus prior to starting our blog. We finally decided that taking imperfect action was better than taking no action at all.

Good pointers, John!
I plan on making 2014 my year to start making money online. I’ve been dabbling in it but haven’t gotten serious about it until lately.
Affiliate marketing is a great way to get started, but now I’m ready to build my list and take it to the next level. You’re so right, building a list is really the start to actually making a living via the internet. I’m excited for this new year and what it will bring!
Thanks for the post!

Mark January 2, 2014 at 3:29 pm

Great Post John. At the end of 2013 I decided to look at all of the most successful internet marketers and create a model off of everything that makes them successful. This year I am implementing that model. This year I am also going to start building a list.

If you are looking for more success on your money making online this year, I know for sure that these four tips would work for you.

Remember them as you improve your website and your online marketing strategies. Eventually you will end up successful in this year.

These four tips seem so easy but a lot of effort and handiwork are behind all these.

Thanks for the tips. I know now how to improve my year.

I also give the same message like this at Kingge.com

Hi John,
Happy New Year to you! Your ideas are spot-on and I am beginning to see where a lot of failed bloggers got it wrong. Trying to reinvent the wheel is something that every blogger should not consider. Its always a mistake! Regular Inspiration and action is needed in this New Year even if a proven business model is going to be followed!

Cassandra January 4, 2014 at 5:17 pm

I stopped thinking and started doing…my first blog done by me is in the process this morning. I was also tired of thinking and over analyzing and planning and started doing. This year is truly my starting point to a new me and what is to abundantly be ahead for me and my family. Thanks John for showing us how to make that first step seem so easyL)

Everyone can make 2014 their best make money online year. There are so many useful tips scattered on the internet and just like Ryan Biddulph said, we can be successful if we are transparent, transparent in sharing our failures and success as well.

I think too that right balance is a must in making money online.

I found this post shared on Kingged.com, the IM social networking site, and I “kingged” it and left this comment.

Happy New Year, John!
Thanks for this short and sweet yet helpful reminder of the basics to making money online.

Number four, especially resonates with me.
I tend to think and think and put off doing doing far too long.
Very often I see an idea that I had being implemented by others who put into practice
what I should have done.
Thanks for the boost and continued success!
