How To SEO Your Blog Post

The following video shows a great On Page SEO trick that I use to control what is displayed in the Google Search Engine Results Page (SERP). When it comes to SEO, I have always said to write for people and not for Google.

Blog posts written for a search engine are very hard to read because the writer is more concerned with his keywords, keyword density, word length, etc., than he is with communicating clearly with his readers. However, If you run a WordPress blog, there is a way to write for both your readers and Google at the same time. Watch the video to find out how it’s done. Your feedback on the video is welcome.

    Wonderful information John.

I thought everybody knew about the tweaking for search engines with AIO & Thesis but your call to action about throwing numbers and facts in the search results, it’s definitely more compelling to get the first click.

Loved the example with Chris Farrell & Mike Filsaime LOL and that topic about the Asian dating site, it surely grabs my attention, great info!

    1. Make Money says:

Just goes to show you that not all internet marketers are made equal…I have been using this tool off and on for a while and love it.

    2. Zach Crawley says:

I had no idea about tweaking it like this .. and I thought I knew a lot about SEO .. haha.

      1. This is the magic of thesis my friend.

That’s why thesis is one of the best theme and I am also using it.

Ofcourse you should know, how to use thesis perfectly.

    3. Pretty good info on how to sort of trick Google into displaying a different title.

  2. fazal mayar says:

good post, on page seo is really important

    1. Make Money says:

so important that it will make or break you if not done properly. It is amazing how far simple on site SEO will take someone.

    2. Jayrweblog says:

      Definitely yes!

  3. Abhik says:

    Awesome!!
    Checking the video now.

    1. PPC Ian says:

Me too, thanks so much John for the great SEO video!

  4. Andrew says:

It’s not natural to click on your search engine result if the searcher is searching for “affiliate party”. You’re wrong. It would ONLY be natural for the searcher to click your result if someone was searching for something related to wasting money on an affiliate party.

    1. John Chow says:

If you say so, but I think you should study up more on human behavior. πŸ™‚

      1. Andrew says:

Alright buddy. I think you should study more on the definition of “natural”.

        1. John Chow says:

Funny how my post ended up in the “natural” search result for affiliate party. Maybe Google needs to study more on the definition of natural as well. πŸ™‚

      2. Yes according to human behavior they will love to read wasting money for hired girls. This is an seo tricks to attract search engine and people. But I want to know the significance of original post title which your reader will read after reaching to post page. You said post for both reader and search engine ,so please illustrate here.
Though I am using this tricks to remove my stop words from my post title for better Search engine visibility. So its an another tricks for SEO.Thanks for share John.

        1. John Chow says:

I write my post with the readers in mind. I use the SEO features in Thesis to then write the title and description Google and Google users. A search engine users will not know my blog as well as a regular reader so I need to use really enticing pieces of information to get them to click. That’s why you see the headline, wasting $150K on girls.

          1. Abhik says:

John!! Don’t you think it’s kind of cloaking your page? I mean, feeding the spiders with different content than normal human visitors? I saw Matt Cutts in a video telling webmasters not to do any such thing.

          2. John Chow says:

No, this is not cloaking. Cloaking is when you try to hide things from the search engines but show it to your readers. Nothing is being hidden from the Google Spider or the reader. The spider can find and does index both titles. The reader can find my SEO title by looking at the source code. Nothing is being cloaked.

          3. No john its clear to me.One title for seo and one for blog reader.I just mean to say that your seo title is much more attractive and informative than original post title to pull traffic. But is it your seo title not suitable for reader?I mean why you choose such short and less informative post title for reader? Is it the tricks are you talking about?will reader like this title very much than seo title?

        2. Maybe the whole party was just an SEO trick.

      3. Geiger says:

Speaking of human behavior. Did you see the result right below yours is actually a scrape of your page?

Also, did you get that email I sent you?

        1. PPC Ian says:

I can’t stand those scraper blogs!

          1. That’s why you implement RSS footer etc into it, so they know it has been scraped/pulled from somewhere else πŸ˜‰

          2. Jayrweblog says:

Me too! Scrapers are like those anything who have no space in the blogosphere.

  5. RJ says:

Thanks for the post John. I wish I knew about this a couple of months ago.

    1. Kevin Kimes says:

I’ve been using that plugin John mentioned, but had no idea it could do this! I feel a bit silly now. Ah well, onward with my new found knowledge!

  6. Jack says:

That’s a so simple and effective way to employ for bloggers. Thanks John!

    1. Jayrweblog says:

Agreed! This is for all bloggers,

  7. It is an interesting post and useful post for us John and thanks for your continues help for all the newbies like me.

  8. Jay Castillo says:

Wow, I am using Thesis and also the All-In-One SEO plugin (yes I know this is redundant) but I never thought of using them this way, until now. Thank you John for sharing this.

However, you still need to make sure that what you write for SEO purposes would really appear in your content right? Otherwise your readers might get pissed-off if what appears in the SERPS are not in your content.

    1. John Chow says:

Yes, your SEO title and description should match what the blog post is about. Do not do a bait and switch!

      1. Domer S. says:

Thanks! Good point on “do not do a bait and switch”. I’m wondering if you can do a similar thing on blogger blogs? I know blogger is kind of limited with plugins. I just try to tweak the template codes. But this info will definitely help me with future WP blogs. πŸ™‚

        1. John Chow says:

I’m not sure if Blogger is any plugin (does Blogger even offer plugins). I recommend you switch to WordPress and don’t look back. πŸ™‚

    2. I’m using All In One SEO as well and new about this trick a while ago.

  9. Josh Miller says:

Cool tip John, I’ve been using All in One SEO all along and was just using the old ctrl + c, ctrl + v method to simply replicate the blog post. I didn’t realize that was what was happening. Appreciated as always.

  10. Afiffuddin says:

Great technique and SEO Tips John! i will use it.

    1. Make Money says:

You will see some good improvements when you start using it bud!

  11. redharmony says:

It is Mike and I πŸ˜‰

Will mix this technique – thanks for sharing.

  12. Markus says:

Using AIO SEO Pack for years, your video remembered me not only to copy and paste headline and introduction like I always do. Will pay more attention, if the entries in SEO Pack are really getting searchers attention. Well done…

    Markus

  13. Great post John. I subscribed to your blog not too long ago and I’m sure glad I did. What I find so surprising about this video besides that neat SEO trick of yours is the fact that your blog is a Thesis blog and it looks amazing.

I’m a newbie when it comes to blogging, but thankfully I was smart enough to pick a Thesis theme as well, but after checking out your site and knowing what I know now, I realize I haven’t used this theme to it’s full potential, not even close! Hopefully, I’ll get the hang of this theme soon enough!

QUICK NEWBIE QUESTION: Since I already have the All In One SEO plugin, should I even bother filling out the Thesis built in SEO details section? Or should I fill out both that and the SEO section that the All In One plugin provides for better results?

    1. John Chow says:

You should actually remove All In One SEO and just use the SEO features of Thesis. You should use either Thesis or All In One but not both on the same post.

  14. Graphic Art says:

    1. Make Money says:

Yeah me too, I’m a big fan as it works wonders for a lot of my stuff

    2. Jayrweblog says:

  25. Everyone talk about blog SEO and you telling blogpost seo … Now that is really interesting.

    1. Jayrweblog says:

The very interesting here is the On-Page-Optimization which is very useful enough on a certain blog,

  26. rick says:

Great technique. I’ve been doing this with All In One SEO as well.

  27. Hi John
what a simple, yet powerfull advise, you share in your video. I have never really understood how to control what google display. I do now, thanks to you πŸ™‚

    I really appriciate it
    Cheers
    Tina

    1. Google shows what’s in your title tag and with thesis you have the power to change the title tag according to your will.

  28. John,
Thanks for the video tutorial. It’s always great to learn from a pro. I have those options with the all in one SEO as well. Now I have a more informed way to use it.

    1. Go for thesis Justin … simply go for it and I am sure you will never regret on your investment.

  29. ahhuann says:

Great tips! But i’m using blogspot, sob~ sob~

any tips on applying this kind of SEO patterns into blogspot?

    1. John Chow says:

Ya, dump Blogspot and get WordPress. πŸ˜›

      1. using xxxx.blogspot.com or have your own domain ?

If own domain than using blogspot is not at all a wise move.

  30. I prefer to SEO is best for my Blog Post…

  31. (Seo) search engine optimization is really fantastic for all users,i am to see there are something about SEO on page …thanks

  32. don2one says:

this vid is nice, tnx for the information and keep up the good work….

  33. jpassmore says:

I was wondering why the title of the page was different on your posts. (For example, the title of this HTML page is “Secret On Page SEO Method To Rank Your Blog Number 1 in Google).

Nice trick. It took me a while to notice because the post title is more prevalent to me than the page title.

    1. You can also do it by giving different title an different URL in wordpress.

Simply add keywords in URL and make the title attractive.

  34. donny says:

Awesome Vid John!..love it.. thank you

  35. exsuit says:

Never knew thesis had this functionality built into it!.
Not sure if you’ve heard of it, but I’ve just switched to Yoast for my “all in one SEO” plugin. It’s starting to pickup following and supposedly better then All in on SEO (that being said, there’s nothing wrong with “all in one SEO” either!).

  36. Conde says:

nice one john, this is an informative and interesting topic. I’d learned new things to you. thanks for sharing.

  37. Nick Bridges says:

Great tip John! I’ve just copied my title into the All-in-one SEO spot for so long. Going to try being a little more creative with it now and see what happens.

  38. nirra says:

    Hi John,

I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now but haven’t left a comment. Thanks for doing this video! I blog in my spare time and haven’t really thought much about seo optimization because it’s kind of just a thing I do on the side. This gets me thinking about making some changes in my blogging and trying to take it to the next level this summer. I’m on blogger. Would you recommend switching to wordpress?? It seems that all of my friends are switching but so far I have resisted doing so. Am I missing out big time?

    1. John Chow says:

Ya, you should really switch over to WordPress. it’s a way better platform than Blogger. Once you switch, you’ll wonder how you ever blogged without it.

  39. Jenny says:

Nice Post and Video John thanks for the useful tips, want to try on my blog

  40. Kirk Taylor says:

I don’t know John….. This just seems like another one of those worthless posts on your site that losers complain about on other blogs! I mean you never really give your readers any real value do you…… πŸ™‚

I wish I would have learned this a couple of year ago, it would have helped me big time…

    1. Kirk Taylor says:

What about doing an “AskJohn” series of posts? Get into the technical details of a blog, similar to this post. We could ask you questions that deal with the insides of blogging.

      Thx

      1. That will consume more time of John and I do not think that John will opt it.

    2. Jayrweblog says:

Anything here is that the only explanation about what Johnchow is sharing, and for me this one is very useful.

  41. David Ewing says:

    HI John,

I love the concept but I have 2 questions:

    1) The title’s you used for the Google SERPs pages were alot more enticing with colorful language and strong calls to action but on the actual blog post (like this one- its just “How to SEO your blog post”) why not use the great title on this one and the one your showing to Google?

    2) Would this not be similar to cloaking? I just want to fully understand before I implement this strategy!

    thank you,
    David

    1. John Chow says:

Generally, I like to keep my title nice and compact. If I were to use the SERP title, it would become two lines in the blog title and I don’t like the looks of that. It’s not cloaking because I’m not hiding anything from the search engine, which is what cloaking is. If you do search for “How to SEO your blog post” you’ll see it’ll show that title in the SERP.

  42. John,

Thanks for the tutorial! At this point, I’m working on building traffic for my product review blog and tips on how to do SEO really helps.

  43. Michael says:

    Great information!

I actually have that ALL in ONE SEO plugin installed in my WordPress and haven’t used that feature. I definitely will start using it now though!

    Thanks for pointing that out.

    1. So you have capitalise all in seo half.

This is one of the best feature of all in seo and If you want to have more SEO friendly blog than you must go for thesis.

Boy you will simply love it.

  44. Hotdogman says:

This works on the Genesis framework too. For Blogger blogs, you can add meta code to the head area of the HTML design page. A lot of SEO people say meta tags don’t give you much juice- DONT BELIEVE THEM!

    1. Jayrweblog says:

You’re definitely right! I’ve been using the META tags right before my code.

  45. Sid says:

Wow, that is an informative video. I did get the whole package from John and it was awesome! And it is nice you told about the All in One SEO as well because I am not running the Thesis theme on my blog. The All In One SEO seems like a neat tool to have.

  46. fas says:

Interesting I never tried this but now I think I should.

    1. You def should look into it

  47. Thanks for sharing.I have been wanting to get up there for a while and using this plugin it will look like it works!

    Thanks Again,
    Bradley Nordstrom

  48. nice tip john , thank you.

  51. This is one of the best theme and I am also using it. awesome post,

  52. My comment on this video was too long so I did a blog post on it instead.

  53. Cool, I might just have to go through all my posts and edit them to this format, although it might take a while =(

  54. Grant says:

Thanks for the post John. I am relatively new to blogging and have chosen to take the route of niche affiliate sites. To date I only have a couple of sites up and running, which I call my experimental sites. I wanted to have something real that I could use to learn from. In the last months I have read tons of “stuff” trying to be a good student and learn as much as possible about internet marketing and of course SEO. I decided early on to use Thesis Theme and so far, so good.

Regarding this post, I have a few questions:
You mention that the search engines read both sets of information so regardless, shouldn’t your objective be to make both the Title and Custom Title as relevant to your keywords as possible? Isn’t the real opportunity here that the search engines get to see your information 2 times in different variations so you have twice the opportunity to rank? If one is trying to rank in a very competitive market maybe the focus of both sets of information should be similar. That is, ranking higher for one keyword phrase rather than lower for two. I realize you ranked very well for both of your title tags, but would that always be the case?

  55. I have seen your above mentioned video, fantastic,i like your post, that is really good informative…thanks john.

  56. And that is on page seo is really important….

  57. Bowen Agency says:

I love the trick John. It’s my second time browsing your blog and I’m learning a lot.

    1. Jayrweblog says:

Just stay updated with this blog, I know your gonna a lot from John.

  58. “I recommend you switch to WordPress and don’t look back. ”

  65. I’m not doing videos just YET, but when I do this will be one of the ways I work on vidoes!!!

    Thanks

  66. Lin says:

Thank you for the wonderful tip! It really helps out for a new blogger like me :)!

  67. Thanks for seo tips sure will utilize for my blog

  68. Keyword repetitions in a document are simply ridiculous. I always write for human beings. I choose the best terms for explaining my lessons, besides using keyword variation, what means that I never repeat any keyword on purpose. This is more advantageous for getting a better ranking, besides providing a pleasant experience to my readers. Thus, I feel that I already write for human beings and for the search engines at the same time.

Of course, nothing is enough. We face a fierce competition online in all fields, and everything we can do to improve our ranking must be done. I’m going to use also the options you have pointed out at WordPress. This is something very simple that I can do without wasting time, and it will surely improve my blog posts’ ranking.

Thank you very much for this information!

  69. yveslanot says:

    John,

I never knew you could do this with AIO SEO, will definately try it out on my next few blog post thanks!

  71. Andrew says:

Wow, thanks for this neat SEO trick. I didnt even know thesis offered such a an option. Next time i will write a blog post i will try this out πŸ™‚
