How To Set Up The Most Effective Email Follow Up System – Part 3

2 Keys to Building Your Email List Online

Picture this: You’ve committed yourself to building relationships with your potential customers through email. You’ve pulled together a killer email series that answers your visitors’ most burning questions while showing off your expertise. It’s bound to send them running to your site to make a purchase, or for the phone to give you a call. However, nobody’s purchased or called yet. Why?

Because nobody’s gotten those killer emails yet!

There’s just one more step to getting your email campaign off and running.

Time To Get Some Subscribers!

After all, the greatest email campaign in the world is 100% useless if there’s nobody to send it to, right? For most businesses, getting subscribers starts at home. The homepage, that is. The most popular way to collect subscribers is by placing a signup form onto your website.

This gives you an opportunity to keep your name/business at the front of their minds, establish yourself as an expert in your field, and build the trust and credibility that leads to people doing business with you – instead of the next guy. There are a few basics to keep in mind when putting a signup form onto your site:

1. Feature the Form Prominently

You can’t fill out a form you never see. Too many people have their forms “hidden:”

  • Buried at the end of a long page
  • Shrunken down and jammed between a bunch of other more visually compelling content
  • Not on the homepage at all – stuck on another page entirely that you have to click over to!

To build an opt-in list successfully, you have to make it a priority of your site. Get your form on the homepage (and on as many other pages of your site as possible), and use size, colors, graphics and whatever else you can think of to make it stand out!

2. Give People a Reason to Subscribe

No one ever woke up and said, “Gee, I’d sure like to sign up for an email list today.” People are coming to you looking for answers, a solution to some problem they’re having. If you want them to sign up for your email campaign, you need to show them that they’ll get closer to that solution by signing up.

In your form’s headline (the part that comes just above the name and email boxes), briefly highlight:

  • What they’ll receive by signing up
  • How they’ll benefit from that information

People want to know: “WIIFM?” (“What’s In It For Me?”). Answer that question with your signup form.

To get the most out of this session, set up your AWeber account beforehand so you can quickly create your own signup forms after the session. After all, people coming to your site today, right now, and leaving without giving you their email address are as good as gone. Most people simply won’t return to a website on their own. Isn’t it time to stop letting your potential customers leave your site forever?

You’ve got the basics down – it’s time to get into some more advanced online marketing tactics. Great tips, John. I am recently trying to study online marketing, and I figure that I should start with the pros… including you! I love your abbreviation “WIIFM”… so many people need to ask themselves this before publishing content, and thanks for reminding me.

    1. The best thing you can put in your sign up form is to declare “How much you are making” and a confidence that they can make too. ( Like you said “How i went from zero to $40000 per month” )

but I am worried, if i will mention it income tax department will be at my home the next day.

      1. Hahahahahah! Good one Shanker!

While there is merit in your approach, especially if you can back it up with a photograph of a smiling face holding a killer cheque, not everybody hasthat kind of ammunition available.

I feel that depending on your niche, you’ll taylor your succes story or marketing tactic to get buy in, accordingly.

Great tips for the most important point of all: “How do I get people to subscribe to my list?!” I would also say that you should add something one the lines “spam free”, ” your email address will never be shared” or similar to your signup form. People are getting more and more tired of being spammed and often just use a “single use” email address to sign up and get the free ebock or what else is on offer and then discard that email address completely. SY

    1. And thats why double opt-in is a good idea as well πŸ™‚

      1. Blogging says:

True, but that doesn’t mean that you keep these subscribers, what I meant is that you have to provide real benefit to them, not only they for you! SY

        1. I have some worse experience in this regard, Last night a guy signed up, He Downloaded the FREE ebook and then unsubscribed,

May be he has some bad experience of SPAM mail somewhere else.

          -Shanker Bakshi

          1. You make a good point. Spam is the scourge of the internet, and many years ago already my IT guy advised me to set up a seperate gmail or yahoo account to avoid newsletters overwhelming my inbox.

The trick would be to offer such good value for money that people want to read your emails. Therein lies the secret, I feel.

      2. What is Double opt-in?

        -Shanker Bakshi

  3. >>You can’t fill out a form you never see<<
I use a slide-in DHTML widget on every page in addition to the subscription link on the navigation bar. Using the slide-in increased sign-ups significantly.

    1. Sorry But i can’t see it.

      1. Benjamin Cip says:

“Free” exellent tips. Some people would make you pay for such informations. Let’s just say that nothing is “100% Free” there’s always an ulterior motive for such articles (i.e : promote an autoresponder) but it’s a really worth having autoresponder, plus John offer you some great tips that will no doubts be beneficial for everyone.

Man this is a good series. I am anxious to see what unfolds in the next few days. Thanks John for all your assistance.

    1. When i started blogging john was just at 3968 Feedburner Subscriber he has gain from that moment to 57k subscriber i manage only couple of thousands of opt-in Subscriber.

He knows how things works out. it good to learn from the master craftsman of this business -John Chow

      -Shanker Bakshi

  7. This truly is a highly practical series. Thanks for this John.

  8. Thanks for this great and helpful tips John. I’ve been waiting for this part. I read and study those steps.

  9. Lee Ka Hoong says:

Offering something to the people who subscribes your newsletter would be good, just like what you do in your blog, giving out the MMO Ebook as a reward for the subscribers.

John, are you going to release Part 4? πŸ˜‰

    Regards,
    Lee

    1. Benjamin Cip says:

It’s just that it’s getting common to offer an ebook in exchange of your subscription. It would be original to get a premium plugin as a present πŸ˜€ just kidding! But it’s true I’m getting fed up with all these new ebook that don’t provide any new MMO method… even if it’s a free product, offering your informations throught subscription is priceless… (money is in the list, you are potential money for the people you subscribe to their list) Anyway, John Chow, did a great work with promoting his blog, I’m certain that autoresponder is what we all need to really start making a 6 figures income!

  10. Earningstep says:

damn,…. this great tips is only about the basic.. i wonder what will you tell us in part 4..
anyway john . why you don’t create another ebook to replace your old one..

    1. Benjamin Cip says:

Why do you need a new ebook when John is offering everything in this posts? I think he shouldn’t waste his time with writing another free ebook… unless he really think it is necessary… or want to make a present to his faithful reader πŸ˜€

      1. Nathan says:

The ebook will benefit new readers since it might contain past posts written by john which are very informative too.

  11. Ms. Freeman says:

This is a great series, but don’t tell John. Before you know we’ll have to sign up for his email and pay for parts 4,5, &6. That’s the point of email marketing right, bate the hook and reel them in!

    LOL:)

  12. Some interesting info about the value of Double-Opt-In vs. Single-Opt-In can be found at

  14. fas says:

Aweber has some awesome tips themselves to making an awesome campaign.

  15. This series has come at the right time, i am working hard to build my list, i know how important it is to make money specially when you are trying your hands on Affiliate marketing.

  16. Doug Dillard says:

Love the series John. The key to getting subscribers nowadays is you really need to be creative and/or offer them something they really want, but can’t get elsewhere… which is very hard.

Years ago it was easy to sign people up, as people looked forward to emails. Nowadays with so many emails and spam you need to really bribe someone to join… and once they join… you better treat them well, or they will just opt-out!

One of our main focuses for our site right now is to build a large subscriber list and we are trying lots of different ways to get people to subscribe and it seems to be working. It is actually a lot of fun coming up with new ways to get subscribers… but it definitely takes work!

  17. Aweber is the leader is autoresponder follow up, but the price is expensive =P,

    thanks

    Denis

  18. ListBuilder says:

For email marketing, you need double optin emails. Otherwise you will violate the regulation.

Classic exposition, I have also mentioned it in my blog article. But it is a pity that almost no friend discussed it with me. I am very happy to see your article.

    1. It happens – It seems you have just started.

      -Shanker bakshi

  21. Significance for doing the simplest of these things with a clear strategy & willingness to make difference in lives of readers is something so much within the reach & definitely doable but without the strategy to make a difference through the campaign, you are so not doing it the way it is suppose to, like you mentioned.

  22. Volksphone says:

I have to try aweber. Have heard a lot of it but never try it.

    Cheers,
    Volksphone!

  23. It sure is very important to make people interested in you. They want to see their own profit from you, and you should make them sure they will have it.

  24. Hey Chow,

I agree with the every word you have written in this post. People won’t subscribe until you give them a reason. A poorly drafted mail will be deleted as soon as its opened.

You have to make sure that you are providing a justified reason that will click the need of the ‘to-be’ subscriber.

  25. Lately I’ve been learning just how effective email marketing can be, so I really appreciate this series, John. It’s been a great step-by-step to getting the best email system off the ground.

  26. Money-Era says:

I think that β€œWIIFM?” (”What’s In It For Me?”) is the great recipe not only for getting users to sign-up for newsletters, but also to achieve success with the website you are building (blog, company page). This is one of the reasons to achieve success online http://www.money-era.com/tag/success/
