Infographic – The History of Advertising

written by John Chow on January 6, 2012

Big Idea Mastermind

My friends over at Infolinks have created a cool infographic on the history of advertising. It is a brief history/timeline of advertising and its evolution. Starting off in ancient Egypt all the way to today’s methods of advertising on the worldwide web, some of the biggest and most interesting landmarks are documented.

Some interesting facts from the infographic include:

  • The first print ad was created in England, and it was for a prayer book.
  • The first official TV commercial was in 1941 for Bulova watches.
  • The first keyword ad was “golf”

The evolution of advertising has experienced milestones such as the printing press and television which impacted advertising format immensely. However, the internet has revolutionized advertising perhaps the most, and of course Infolinks believe that In-Text advertising is the next generation of advertising. :)

Love that infographic.

Keeps your interest whilst you actually learn something, which is the art of good teaching.

I never knew that advertising started in Egypt!

The other good thing about this particular graphic… it’s easy to follow.

Still thyinking about changing to Livefyre comments?

@wmwebdes There’s so much that came out of Egypt that most of the so-called experts care not to speak on…esp where the spiritual sciences are concerned

A well illustrated timeline on the history of advertising and some great information. Didn’t realise advertising goes all the way back to 750 BC, well you learn something new everyday. Thanks for sharing this with everyone.

MarketSecretsBlogger January 9, 2012 at 11:06 am

@Mahbubur Rahman Some might argue that it goes even farther back than that if you consider how the snake “advertised” the forbidden apple to Adam and Eve..

We’ve seen You tube, Twitter and Face book ad compaign appeared in consequent years. That makes me wondering what new way of ad on the Internet we’ll see in 2012…

@Grace from JLC One development I see is Google testing its new advertising option that allows you to put your subscription box right on their search results pages…this will definitely change the way you get ppl onto your email list for further promotions. You can read more about it on a post I wrote at http://marketsecrets.biz/building-list-google

Interesting that the Internet is now considered the #2 budget priority for online advertising.

I don’t think it’ll be that long before TV and Internet advertising budgets are considered practically the same thing. The definition between the two is already getting blurred with increasing on-demand content that is often streamed from the web to traditional TV sets.
