Internet Pornography – Really Make Money Online

written by John Chow on May 12, 2007

The Ultimate Online Profit Model

This almost not safe for work video from Good Magazine explains what we have known all along – Internet pornography makes a lot of money online. The stats are quite staggering. Here are just a few.

  • 89% of porn is created in the U.S.
  • $2.84 billion in revenue was generated from U.S. porn sites in 2006
  • $89 per second is spent on porn
  • 72% of porn viewers are men
  • 260 new porn sites go online everyday

Usually the porn industry innovates first and key features make their way to more mainstream sites. But over the last couple of years, many of the new ideas around web applications, like user generated content, video sharing, etc., went mainstream first and are now hitting the porn sites.

No, I am not planning to make a porn site. Enjoy the video. Remember, it’s almost not safe for work! I thought the foot notes were very creative.

the amount of porn and the money it makes on the internet are staggering…260 new websites a day…all trying to make money…wow…guess it hasnt reached it’s saturation point yet??

Monetize Your Blog May 12, 2007 at 9:50 pm

surely not, maybe we all should monetize our blog with some porn materials.

John, i can not see any of the videos posted on this site, what’s wrong?

Does Anyone experience the same?

Cheap Custom Content May 12, 2007 at 10:38 pm

From the looks of it a lot of people can view them fine (me included) — maybe you’re not using the latest version of firefox/IE?

Monetize Your Blog May 13, 2007 at 5:27 am

you’re right, i’m still using firefox 1.5 cos i wanna use some extensions that don’t work with higher versions.

thanks

Krillz May 13, 2007 at 3:21 am

Check if you have a flashplugin working, also you would need to allow data from the source of the video to be able to see it, some browser security features have this problem.

Linux operating system May 13, 2007 at 4:34 am

Yes you are right, I think that lots out of that 260 close almost immediately.

Law of Attraction May 13, 2007 at 9:43 pm

sex sells

HMTKSteve May 14, 2007 at 2:32 am

I don’t get it. With all of the free porn on the web why would anyone pay for it?

I mean, that is the argument groups like the RIAA use, right?

Tyler Ingram May 12, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Nice way of showing statistics.

I like how Canada isn’t a percentage worth showing ;) No are no pervs in Canada!

Tyler Ingram May 12, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Though I do like how you included internet pornography with make money online.. Are you branching off to get people to come to your site when they look for porn ? ;)

Monetize Your Blog May 12, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Not looking for porn, but looking for ways to make money online with porn!

haha

good post, john

Law of Attraction May 13, 2007 at 9:44 pm

indeed smart way to get hts for porn

Marco May 12, 2007 at 8:36 pm

John, will you teach us how to make money online with porn?

Jiang May 12, 2007 at 9:20 pm

it’s a real huge market~

Monetize Your Blog May 12, 2007 at 9:55 pm

well, since john hasn’t done anything about making money online with porn yet, i doubt he’ll offer some good tips with real substance…it’d, however, be great if he does give us some!

internet marketing blog May 12, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Those statistics are amazing. I also believe the majority of web hits are for porn, but I cant really remember my source on this one. Wonder how the keyword “porn” and a link to my site in the comments here is / if going to effect my site. Interesting test.

Monetize Your Blog May 12, 2007 at 9:58 pm

interesting point. i don’t think it’d affect your site much.

but for john, he might be number one with the search term “make money online with porn”

Arun May 16, 2007 at 4:20 pm

He’s number 3 on Google using “make money online with porn”

Phishie Diaz May 12, 2007 at 8:57 pm

@ Tyler Ingram – I agree. Definitely Google food. Damn it John, you are so evil.

And yes… there is so much money in porn. I tried entering into the porn business but I found it very difficult. You need to be EXTREMELY competitive, work VERY hard, and then you have to live with knowing you are doing something “immoral.” I gave up on porn. The way those guys operate is so weird… it’s a whole nother story working in the porn business. I guess it’s good that I got out of it when I did cuz my g/f absolutely HATES porn.

Cheap Custom Content May 12, 2007 at 9:05 pm

“I gave up porn” — that would look good on a T-shirt. There’s a new business venture for you (your girlfriend might even appreciate it).

Monetize Your Blog May 12, 2007 at 10:01 pm

it’s a tell tell sign that you have not give up porn.

or in someone’s eye, you were a perv at least…

Cheap Custom Content May 12, 2007 at 10:33 pm

You mean tell-tale sign — nah, I just think it could be one of those funny T-shirt slogans. “I’m with stupid,” “Sexy,” “Goat Milk?” — you know, one of those. They’re not necessarily true, but they still serve their purpose which is humor/sarcasm.

Monetize Your Blog May 13, 2007 at 5:18 am

sorry, tell tale

Monetize Your Blog May 13, 2007 at 5:26 am

got ya, that’s exactly what i don’t have.

a good sense of humor

cool idea

Linux operating system May 13, 2007 at 4:41 am

Yes, he is really evil, But anyway people looking for porn may arrive to this site, once they see, it is not a porn site, they will leave it immediately, dont you think?

Krillz May 13, 2007 at 5:16 am

yeah but there might be some SEO/wanting-to-make-money-from-blogging looking for porn and arriving here.

Not a lot but still some so I wouldn’t say it’s a total loss.

Phishie Diaz May 13, 2007 at 10:57 pm

Or maybe a wanting-to-make-money-from-blogging-about-porn person may have arrived here. There are a lot of porn blogs out there ya know. =]

Krillz May 13, 2007 at 5:14 am

still you can make nice money on domain selling, don’t know about know but some time ago if you bought some potential good domains suited for porn sites you were looking on some good $.

That is if you knew what you were doing, I bet many got hussled not knowing how much $ they could have gotten from that deal.

Cheap Custom Content May 12, 2007 at 9:02 pm

I loved that Google search bar on the woman’s side LOL with the search field and everything. Unbelievable statistics about Internet porn; I knew there were a lot, but those numbers are just overwhelming.

Monetize Your Blog May 12, 2007 at 10:04 pm

john, i can not see any of the videos that you posted, what’s wrong?

Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

John Chow May 12, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Upgrade to the latest FireFox.

Phishie Diaz May 12, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Hopefully his next reply won’t be, “What’s Firefox?”

…I would cry…

My site is broken right now btw… just thought you all would like to know…

Linux operating system May 13, 2007 at 4:39 am

I have the latest and still could not see it :(

Monetize Your Blog May 13, 2007 at 5:23 am

yeah, i see the problem now.

i’m still stuck in firefox 1.5 because i want to use some of the extensions that don’t work in higher versions.

well, i checked the page source code and find the url of the video.

nice one.

amazing stats and a sexy sexy lady.

she’s got nice bottoms…

is it just me?

Dotcom Doctor May 12, 2007 at 11:18 pm

How to make money using porn content? Next article from John Chow. Waiting for it.

Slaptijack May 12, 2007 at 11:45 pm

Where do 260 new websites (daily) get their content?

Tyler Ingram May 13, 2007 at 1:27 pm

A lot of it is shared. How do I know? I know people in the biz! I’ve also been approached to do websites for the industry using content that’s already out there, just to put a new twist on it.

Content that’s is already out there, well I mean that one guy who owns a site will use the same media on another site that he owns, just gives it a different look.

Why didn’t I do it… I have my reasons :P

Phishie Diaz May 13, 2007 at 11:06 pm

There are plenty of affiliate programs out there for porn websites. They offer some free content for their publishers to use. If you want free porn maybe you should become an affiliate for a porn website. hehe…

Even though I stopped publishing for porno sites I still get e-mails with all kinds of free porn. Hehe… not like it’s of any use to me…

Ed Lau May 12, 2007 at 11:45 pm

only 12% of websites are porn? Wow…I expected that number to be way higher…

alamster May 12, 2007 at 11:52 pm

Hmm…porn statistics using video media, I ever see a big hosting or domain registrar company use similar way to show how important domain is.

k-director.com May 13, 2007 at 12:57 am

Just something i want to amend here.

“Countries that ban pornography: … … … … MalayasiaMalaysia … … ”

Thanks.

Waken May 13, 2007 at 2:04 am

I’m not into it..but the vid is refreshing

Sarah Joana May 13, 2007 at 2:20 am

I think funny video websites make a comparable profit to porn sites

After many years of a tumultuous internal struggle, I had finally consoled myself that my dreams of being a bohemian high-art pornography mogul and going to work in a shiny monogrammed bath robe were simply not to be. I had moved on.

And now you put up this post, give me false hope, and dangle this carrot(no phallic symbol intended) in front of me!

Why John?! Why?!!
Why would you be so cruel?

mao May 13, 2007 at 4:01 am

Foot notes…lol
Very creative indeed.

Rich Minx May 13, 2007 at 7:07 am

Maybe I should become a porn-again blogger.

SEO Friendly Web Directory May 13, 2007 at 7:38 am

Great video, very original Idea.
I think you will give this girl a huge traffic boost with your post.

I will check alexa ranking tomorrow for her website to see the change

Rich Minx May 13, 2007 at 7:53 am

Also, I think they prefer the more PC term “adult entertainment”. ;)

IBrutus May 13, 2007 at 8:42 am

I posted a couple of adult theme articles at Xomba.com -nothing hardcore- thinngs like Mistakes men make when making love, the best postionn for making love. That was was months ago and they are still generating several hits a day.

Search Engine Marketing May 13, 2007 at 8:42 am

Dot Info Domain May 13, 2007 at 12:33 pm

it’s true, well, you know, it can be boring at work. spice it up with some naughty stuff can be fun, just don’t get caught

Daniel McLean May 16, 2007 at 2:07 pm

Just look at how many people use “Adult Entertainment” for their avatar!

18DVDs May 13, 2007 at 2:34 pm

You know…you CAN start a porn site for free from MY site

smash May 13, 2007 at 5:36 pm

I also believe internet porn is an industry that’s never taken a downfall in yearly earnings as a whole. It keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Krillz May 14, 2007 at 8:09 am

now how many did visit the models site?
haha come on don’t be shy and admit :P

D&D Nerd.com May 15, 2007 at 12:06 am

Well, it’s true what the people at Avenue Q said: The Internet is for Porn!

Also, after briefly taking a look at her site, it seems like the above vid is a bit of a marketing tool for her. Rather sneaky and evil, methinks.

Cheap Custom Content May 15, 2007 at 12:55 am

Even outside the Internet, porn has been a thriving industry I’d say. What, with all the magazines and videos being sold each day…people who have these materials go online because it’s the most accessible venue for porn right now. Porn capitalists acknowledge that and I guess they’re just trying to supply the huge demand.

Matt Huggins May 16, 2007 at 12:53 pm

You know, I’ve actually considered running a porn site…don’t give me more reasons to go for it. ;)
