John Chow dot Com Blog Stats for 2010

written by John Chow on January 5, 2011

Everyone loves stats so I figure I would post some stats from my blog. The nice thing about WordPress is it gives you a Right Now box in the the control panel that tells you how many posts, pages, categories, tags and comments your blog has since it started.

Since this blog started on December 1, 2005, I have done 3,738 posts for an average of two blog posts per day for five years. This blog also averaged 101 approved comments per day, which I find pretty amazing. The big number is the spam comments. Akismet has protected my blog from 947,297 spam comments so far. That’s over 500 spam comments per day. However, the actually number is higher than that because I was using another spam filter when the blog started and didn’t switch to Akismet until almost two years later.

For 2011, I expect to break 4,000 blog posts and I look forward to Akismet killing off spam comment number 1 million. That should happen in the next 100 days.

Wow… 2 post per day is awesome..

d3so January 5, 2011 at 11:41 am

Yeah, it takes me forever to get one post out :P
what about traffic stats?

Ways to Make Money January 5, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Yeah, I think what John does great is to mix his post length up. Not every article is a 1,000 word bookmark post. Helps to churn them out faster…

Email List Building January 5, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Hey John,

Interesting stats and Akismet is doing a pretty good job.

I wonder if you bother to retrieve the good comments that Akismet accidentally places in spam folder.

It does happen perhaps one per cent of the time.

Email List Building January 5, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Hey D3so,

I think that John will reveal only the stats that aren’t hard to deduce anyway.

He may not want to reveal all the stats.

I wish to be wrong on this one as I’d like more detailed numbers too.

John Chow January 5, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Yes I do recover all the incorrect spam that Akismet captures.

d3so January 6, 2011 at 12:12 am

Askimet used to label my comments as spam. I’m glad that was resolved.

Kirk Taylor January 5, 2011 at 1:25 pm

I’ve really kicked it in and started doing two posts a day as well. You can’t argue with John’s numbers.

If your passionate about what your writing about, a blog post comes easier, IMHO…..

Now the question is can I kick it up to three posts a day? I’m totally committed and am doing this full time plus.

PPC Ian January 5, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Kirk,
That’s awesome! Looking forward to watching your progress.

Max January 7, 2011 at 8:51 am

3 Posts a day, my wife is an avid Perez Hilton reader, and that guy must be popping out 10 a day. I am not saying anything for his quality though – but he sure gets a lot of readership.

dotCOMreport January 5, 2011 at 11:48 am

John understands the power of consistency and it’s paying off…

Harshad January 6, 2011 at 7:21 am

Absolutely. Keeping the blog fresh with posts is important and John does that very well.

Human Development January 6, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Two articles daily is Average, but it’s hard to maintain the quality of content.

Relationship Advice January 7, 2011 at 12:12 pm

Very awesome. I have trouble posting one post per month!

ikki January 7, 2011 at 7:50 pm

right now im doing more than 15 daily posts, but in average im did 10

ibnujusup February 20, 2011 at 5:55 pm

wow… u are damn consistent…kudos :-)

Jimvesting January 5, 2011 at 10:40 am

John-
Your production is amazing, I honestly can’t believe that you continue to work at such a pace. 100 comments per day is commendable, especially because I have noticed that almost all of yours are of high quality. Keep up the good work!

elie palima January 5, 2011 at 10:42 am

you’re absolutely right! :-)

elie palima January 5, 2011 at 10:40 am

awesome stats! O_O thanks for giving us an inside look to your wp-dashboard john!

Jared Holland January 5, 2011 at 10:51 am

You’re stats are amazing! I didn’t know those numbers could get that high. You are truly an inspiration to all of us trying to make it in the blogging world. I have taken on the challenge of 2 blog posts per day as well. Maybe one day someone will know my name.

Kirk Taylor January 5, 2011 at 1:26 pm

Keep at it, you’ll get known. You’re already on your way. We know your name…

The Penny Hoarder January 5, 2011 at 11:14 am

That is freaking amazing. I can’t believe you have almost 4,000 posts. That’s a lot of love for the google bot.

Andy January 5, 2011 at 11:43 am

262 more blog posts to go! Pretty remarkable stats John! Keep on truckin!

Jorge Delgado January 5, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Thanks for share the numbers :

I love the part of 2 posts per day, nice !

Colin @ Make Money Online January 5, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Hello John, My friend. It has been a while since I posted here, but for the sheer power of averaging 2 posts a day for 5 years, I have to post a big “Well Done!”

Keep the good stuff coming :)

WTF News January 5, 2011 at 3:38 pm

Great results John.. looks like Akismet has done a great job too!

ikki January 5, 2011 at 5:49 pm

Stocks on Wall Street January 5, 2011 at 9:39 pm

Good work ikki

ikki January 7, 2011 at 7:49 pm

thanks!!!!

Aaron January 5, 2011 at 5:53 pm

That’s awesome but there is no way I could write that much – not with a full time job and a family. I tried once and burned out in a month. I’m in slow and steady mode now.

Sam Patwegar January 5, 2011 at 7:56 pm

Amazing Stats John, would be interesting to compare you with other well known bloggers

Dating Master January 5, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Killing it man. Great job.

d3so January 6, 2011 at 12:16 am

I think it’s overkill but it’s worth it since this blog generates tons of revenue.

Stocks on Wall Street January 5, 2011 at 9:39 pm

Strong stats John I am at only 700 spots.

Home Brewing Supplies January 6, 2011 at 1:12 am

Impressive posts number. No wonder the blog is such an authority, with that huge amount of content.

Devon Brown January 6, 2011 at 5:50 am

Very impressive! It’s no wonder though because you give great content!

Dean Saliba January 6, 2011 at 6:38 am

I miss the monthly reports you used to do. Why did you stop doing them?

John Chow January 7, 2011 at 10:25 am

Accountant told me to stop plus advertisers didn’t want me revealing what they were paying me.

Dave January 6, 2011 at 6:42 am

Luke January 6, 2011 at 11:14 am

Pretty impressive John! Hitting 4k this year should be easy :)

Human Development January 6, 2011 at 3:25 pm

I am also planning to post two articles on the daily basis so that my blog readers have enough to read if they visits daily, and yeah I also on the target of spammers and that’s why installed the Akismet recently.

Relationship Advice January 7, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Harshad January 8, 2011 at 5:42 am

It’s done by Unique Blog Designs… see the linka t bottom.

Garen January 7, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Wow, that is kind of sad that of all the comments you have gotten nearly half of them are just spam. You can thank all these blog commenting programs for that!

Garen January 7, 2011 at 1:15 pm

Also, I forgot to ask you. Do you know of a plugin that you can do an IP ban if someone is always leaving spam on your blog?

Constantine January 8, 2011 at 8:16 am

Two posts per day is a job well done. My goal for 2010 is to write two posts per day. You are my inspiration.

Matthew Meyer January 9, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Lunarpages Review January 31, 2011 at 10:49 pm

One of the reasons why John Chow blog is one of the most famous and still well read, is that the consistent posting of good posts. Average of 2 posts per day for 4 years is nothing small. You worked really hard for it.

Ways to Make Money January 5, 2011 at 2:07 pm

What a pain to have to go through 500 spam comments a day, no?

d3so January 6, 2011 at 12:13 am

I wonder how long that takes you.
Sometimes I have a tough time deciding whether a comment is truly spam or not.

PPC Ian January 5, 2011 at 6:47 pm

I agree! It takes me forever to do 1 post! I’m impressed with that 2 posts/day for 5 years! Awesome stuff! :-)

d3so January 6, 2011 at 12:14 am

It’s tougher for us because we have jobs. Your posts are also a good length.

Tampa Web Design January 7, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Approve it, then see if and what their future comments are. If your comments are set to NoFollow and it contributes to the convo then I say let it stay. Just my two cents.
