John Chow dot Com Income Report – August 2007

written by John Chow on September 1, 2007

uopm

It’s time for the much anticipated blog income report! These are exciting times here at John Chow dot Com. Summer is about over and companies are getting ready for the advertising bonanza that happens in the fall/winter months. As a blog, I’m surprised at how well I’ve done during these summer months. I expected income to drop but it had held steady and even managed to set a new record.

Almost a year ago, I decided to use this blog as a monetization case study to see if is was really possible to make money by blogging and since John Chow dot Com was the only blog I own, it made sense to use it. Starting with just Google AdSense, the blog made $352.94 in its first month, went up from there and finished off May 2007 at a record $12,569.61 in total blog income. In July, income pulled back a bit but came in at a still respectable $12,406.76.

On August 22, I unveiled a complete redesign of the blog with an emphasis placed on private ad sales. Even though all ads spots have been sold, their sales won’t count until this month. The advertisers were given the nine days in August for free. How did the blog do without the new private ad services? Pretty damn good!

Total Blog Income For August 2007: $17,828.61

The amazing thing about the income figure – aside from the number itself – is I set it in the heart the summer. The other amazing thing is it will most likely be broken next month as those private ad spots kick in. Here is the income breakdown.

Blog traffic in August was 337,852 page views from 170,465 visitors. A nice increase from the 319,165 page views posted the month before. RSS subscriptions are at a record high 7,836 readers and should break 8,000 this month. Traffic wise, everything is looking up!

Affiliate sales continues to be the blog’s biggest money maker. I promote a bunch of different programs, with an emphasis placed on programs that pays a residue income. The best performing affiliate program for August was Text Link Ads, accounting for $2,500 of the $7,244 affiliate income. Yes, I make more from the TLA affiliate program than I do from the TLA links.

Google AdSense posted its second worst performance ever. It now accounts for less than 3% of blog income. This month it will account for zero. Yes, the ad network that started John Chow dot Com will be eliminated from the blog. This illustrates the importance of spreading out your income sources. I started with Google AdSense. If I had stuck with them and added nothing else, the blog’s income wouldn’t be all that impressive. I run as many advertising systems as I can get away with while still offering a good user experience. Check out my recommended moneymakers to find out more about all the ad networks I use.

Blog advertising expenses for the month was $585.46 for Google Adwords. Hosting for John Chow dot Com is sponsored by BlueFur Web Hosting. Use coupon code JohnChowRocks for 15% off any BlueFur hosting packages. The blog redesigned was done by Nate Whitehill of Unique Blog Designs for considerations other than cash.

Congratulations on the awesome stats- traffic and income! We all knew things would be looking up for you this month.

My August stats report will be up on my blog this afternoon.

SEO Optimization September 1, 2007 at 10:57 am

And he didn’t even considered the $8k of the banner slots for this month… This is a great income John i knew it would grow (but i was kinda calculating also the income from the banners) but you surprised me totally, without those banners you managed the 17k U.S. dollars income.

Great job, well done (no other words).

MONEY BLUE BOOK September 1, 2007 at 12:16 pm

Your affiliate sales are mighty high….well they do say that affiliate income is where the big money is! Great job!

Steven September 1, 2007 at 4:07 pm

If you think about it, from September 2006 to August 2007, it’s been exactly 12 months of monetization. Your 1 year income comes to a total of $91,208.55!

MORE TRAFFIC September 1, 2007 at 7:39 pm

That’s crazy Steve! At this pace Chow will be making $91,208 a month by next year. It seems like he’s only warming up! Chow hasn’t even focused locally yet as far as I know.

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 5:17 am

In one year from $352.94 to $17,828.61 per month – that is one awesome annual growth rate!

It’s amazing what you can accomplish with some focus.

DeboHobo September 2, 2007 at 6:43 am

What is the status on the Agloco program? I haven’t seen any up date on that. I still think it is nothing more than a bunch of spyware. To get the viewbar it sends you to a site and guess what the logo is, two cows and the url is http://www.tucows.com/preview/515079

Just something I found to be a bit interesting and suspicious.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 5:36 pm

I made a post here with an excel sheet with John’s income break down…

http://www.steventruong.com/9120855-in-one-year/

Lova Of BlogaDollar.com September 1, 2007 at 5:15 pm

The affiliate income alone is $7,244. That would be enough for me for the month, and for John Chow too. That’s a complete salary, and beyond. John has $10,000 in excedent. He should give it to us, his regular readers. Or he should start a contest and make somebody win those $10,000. That way, he would be a real dot com mogul: “willing to help others mmo”.
$10,000 would be enormous for us all to reach our goal faster. Dont’ you think?

GnomeyNewt September 1, 2007 at 5:42 pm

Me too Lova. Maybe he will have a makeover contest or something equal to that.

Softsled September 1, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Let’s see, if John were to divide the $10k between his readers for the month we would all get about $.05. I’ll be generous and let somebody else have my share

Softsled September 1, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Not that you are gonna tell us, but at what point does the income of this blog start to compete with your TTZ income?

>Getting warm
>Getting warmer
>Not even close

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:12 pm

LOL. He’s never going to disclose that and unless the blog was making $100,000 per month, it’s not going to be even comparable

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 8:55 pm

Wow! That’s crazy figures! With income streams like that it will soon be time to retire to the Bahama’s won’t it?!?!

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:32 am

I think he already makes enough outside the blog for that, he just haven’t retired yet.

DeboHobo September 1, 2007 at 10:59 am

There is a blog out there that is saying John Chow is no longer a Dot Com Mogul! What’s up with that!!! Say it ain’s so
http://www.debohobo.com/2007/09/01/debo-hobo-week-in-review/

John Chow September 1, 2007 at 11:07 am

Most likely saying that because I’m not #1 in Google for John Chow. Lucky for me, since I made the rules for being a dot com mogul, I can change them.

As long as the number 1 Google result is about you, it’s OK.

DeboHobo September 1, 2007 at 11:08 am

I not sure if I’m relieved or amazed at how evil you really are

DeboHobo September 1, 2007 at 11:10 am

P.S. Do you have time for that Interview now? :?:

KingJacob September 1, 2007 at 7:58 pm

What are you talking about John? The number one result for john chow is about MR.Cow not mr chow.

SEO Optimization September 2, 2007 at 1:43 am

haha thats exactly what i commented on lewis’s blog, i said he could rather change the rule instead of rewriting the description :P

Steven September 2, 2007 at 8:54 pm

LOL I don’t think John’s going to do an interview unless it’ll increase his traffic in some way haha

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:24 am

If you keep on like this soon you’ll be able to ignore Google completely – they’ve done their best to banish you but the cash keeps on rolling in – which makes it even more impressive.

Maybe Google has John Chow envy!?!

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:36 am

I think John stopped worrying about Google a long time ago. It hasn’t even begun to place a dent in his reign of money making online.

Nitesh Bhasin September 6, 2007 at 11:15 am

JOhn you can even add getting new hate clubs

like those calling john chow a scammer or something at par with drug dealer also in your list of being dot com mogul

BTW google or no google u r atrue dot com mogul and a style icon for me(though a bit evil)

MONEY BLUE BOOK September 1, 2007 at 12:14 pm

WOW That is Amazing!
I am stunned…that is remarkable income ! Congratulations John Chow. You are in inspiration and model to us all. Your evilness reigns!

Hamilton Ontario Web Design September 2, 2007 at 6:25 am

This is only the start, John is going to easily break 20k in September.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 8:55 pm

Yeah, the only question is by how much. I saw at least 23k lol

will September 2, 2007 at 9:22 am

yea same here… once I have the time to calculate my stats they will be on my blog as well.

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 7:03 pm

Good luck – if you do half as well as John you’ll be achieving a tremendous amount.

john choe September 1, 2007 at 11:00 am

lemme take the third spot

Terra Andersen September 1, 2007 at 12:10 pm

Congrats John! And thanks for getting me all ramped up for September! yay! I have multiple internet businesses and this is always the rushed time to get everything in order for the holidays…

Keep up the awesome work!

SEO Optimization September 2, 2007 at 2:28 am

You might be speaking to the wrong John … i think

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:26 am

And now you’ve got the free book it should help even more – September bodes well for you – good luck!

Simon's Money Notes September 1, 2007 at 11:11 am

Great figures John.

Jess September 1, 2007 at 11:15 am

Wow! Way to go! ;)

Sucker September 1, 2007 at 11:25 am

Wow, that’s a pretty nice jump!

Steven September 2, 2007 at 8:57 pm

This isn’t the first time his blog has seen exponential growth, but for it to grow that much without accounting for the new theme and ad slots is definitely a big leap.

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:27 am

The power of directly selling your own adverts.

And I still think this is an area that hasn’t been exploited to its full potential yet by John.

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:38 am

I am sure there are a lot of unexplored areas but sooner or later John will get to all of them he deems fit.

chinaboy September 1, 2007 at 11:27 am

10 days 300×250 ad spothas not been flipped yet?

Rich4life said he owned till 9th September 2007 from 29th August 2007 onwards.
If so, it’s less than 10 days now.

Anyway, the number is great. I bet next month will at least $25000, even around $30000.

John Chow September 1, 2007 at 11:29 am

I put an end to the ad flipping. Rich4Life refunded the buyers.

Colin Klinkert September 1, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Yeah i noticed that,

I think it was a smart move!

DeboHobo September 2, 2007 at 8:27 am

yip, at some point an ad was bound to pop up that would have been a confict or indangered revenue.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Not necessarily, it was just more of a hassel for John to change the link to the ads each and every time lol

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:28 am

How much were they refunded by?

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:39 am

You’ll probably have to ask Rich4Life that one…

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 5:20 am

John’s fast proving the sky’s the limit – it’s amazing what you can do once you’ve built some momentum – this sites money making capacity just seems to get bigger and bigger.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:02 pm

This site will continue to grow, I really can’t wait to see how much it will change by this time next year.

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:29 am

It’ll be a scary figure and more than enough to live very comfortably off I’m sure.

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:33 am

I think he’s already there lol

Matt Jones September 1, 2007 at 11:37 am

Very Impressive John… I wonder what you will use to replace Adsese

Matt September 1, 2007 at 11:38 am

He’s already replaced it with private ad sales…

SEO Optimization September 2, 2007 at 2:53 am

Actually i see AuctionAds instead of the 468×60 AdSense ad. At least that was the last adsense banner.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:15 pm

Most of it will be private sales.

Matt September 1, 2007 at 11:37 am

How much are you paying for your server? :???:

John Chow September 1, 2007 at 11:41 am

Like I said in the post, the server is sponsored by BlueFur.

Matt September 1, 2007 at 12:29 pm

Oh, I read that wrong. Opps.

Thanks for the clarification!

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 5:22 am

That’s the best thing about this isn’t is? The more cash you make, the more well known you become. The more well known you become, the more cash you can make – and the more free stuff you can get!

Such as hosting and a new site design to name but a couple!

Brilliant!

Hamilton Ontario Web Design September 2, 2007 at 6:27 am

I’m sure the companies giving him free stuff (blog design and hosting) are making their money back on referral business :)

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:18 pm

It’s not brilliance, its just business and how things work.

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:31 am

Definitely – it’s a win win situation which is even better for John as it encourages more of the same. You know you’ve made it when people can profitably piggy back you.

chinaboy September 1, 2007 at 11:41 am

And I think you should give some more details about Affiliate Sales earnings, besides TLA, like which program make how much.

That will catch readers eyes, and readers will try themselves. Your Affiliate Sales will also benefit.

Terra Andersen September 1, 2007 at 12:11 pm

I agree with this! A lot of us get a little flustered and confused when it just says “affiliate sales” *=)

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:07 pm

I think in a previous post not to long ago, John did a brief breakdown of all his affiliate sales (or at least most). You can probably find the post if you scroll back a few pages (probably a few more since his site has been reduced from 10 posts per page to 5 posts per page). But I am sure an update wouldn’t hurt since he may have increase the number of his affiliate sales by now.

DeboHobo September 1, 2007 at 11:43 am

The numbers John is pulling down are amazing. Eventhough what would be major bottle necks for many of us, John manages to pass through, over or around them with unbelievable ease.

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:34 am

Yes he seems to have such a focus and an ability to market this site that he just keeps on growing and growing. It’s quite inspiring to the rest of us really.

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:41 am

It always look easy when someone else does something well lol

pchere September 1, 2007 at 11:48 am

Its interesting to note you earn $1000 from Kontera every month. Are you in a special deal with them?

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Yes he does.

Matt Huggins September 1, 2007 at 11:51 am

Hmm…I’m getting there! I reached a new high at $270.16. :P Okay, so maybe I’m actually not that close…

Softsled September 1, 2007 at 2:48 pm

Congratulations.. that’s a start.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:09 pm

I agree as well. $270.16 is a good amount so far. Keep it up and some day you’ll make a lot more.

Terra Andersen September 1, 2007 at 5:01 pm

Agreed, $270 is a great start! Keep up th hard work! John is a great example of what you can do with a little research, knowledge and tenacity!

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 5:23 am

Just look at what John has done in a year with only a little more than $270 – well done and keep thinking big!

KingJacob September 1, 2007 at 11:51 am

That was 6k over my estimate ,pretty impressive, does the 7k from affiliate sales iclude your recommended moneymakers, if so thats doubly impressive.

Terra Andersen September 2, 2007 at 2:06 am

That was like 3k over my estimate I believe… Either way, it’s good that it went over instead of under!

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 7:24 pm

I wonder if anyone actually guessed over instead of under on their estimates?

Hamilton Ontario Web Design September 2, 2007 at 6:28 am

I’d imagine the affiliate sales is mostly (if not all) made up from the recomended moneymakers.

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:43 am

I wouldnt say that, but I do think it makes up a good portion.

DeboHobo September 1, 2007 at 11:56 am

Kontera and Bidvertiser are starting to irritate me, pretty much non- producers. But me Coffee is doing a hell of a lot better than I ever imagined.

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:35 am

Who says caffeine isn’t good for you!

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:44 am

Debo, I don’t know about bidvertiser but have you given Kontera ample time? Do you have a lot of incoming traffic to supplement the income stream?

Jeremy Steele September 1, 2007 at 12:02 pm

Congrats john.

Making The Money September 1, 2007 at 12:02 pm

What’s most impressive to me is the income relative to the number of visitors. In a month I get a lot more visitors and page views than John’s blog but a good months income is half what John is earning. The Make Money Online market is obviously still a great place to be!

Hamilton Ontario Web Design September 2, 2007 at 6:29 am

John is a master at monetizing his traffic, he’s probably got one of the highest CPMs in the industry.

KingJacob September 2, 2007 at 7:32 am

It helps when your target audience is people interested in making money online

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:11 pm

I agree with KingJacob on this one, it’s about your target audience but also how you choose to monetize your site.

Making The Money September 2, 2007 at 9:01 am

It what industry though? Is blogging an industry or making money online? Whatever it is he’s sure got it down to a fine art.

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:38 am

How do you monetize your site? Do you utilise all the different methods that John does?

Don’t beat yourself up – it sounds like with the traffic you are getting you should be able to play around with your monetization and improve your earnings.

A lot of people struggle to build their traffic in the first place and without that it’s virtually impossible to make decent money from a site. You’ve already got half the job done.

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:45 am

I agree here. You should look over John’s eBook again for hints on how you can take it to the next level. As always, don’t rely heavily on one income source.

Rhys September 1, 2007 at 12:04 pm

Wow! Looks like you’re getting there. This month on my blog I earnt the just as much as you did in your first month. Wh knows what the next six months’ll bring?! ;)

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:47 am

Good luck

David September 1, 2007 at 12:12 pm

The numbers are too impressive, it is destroying my eyes..

DeboHobo September 1, 2007 at 1:03 pm

How can you see with all that hair in your face? Really though arent’t the number awesome!

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:39 am

I’ve heard of things making you go blind but never numbers!

Click Input September 1, 2007 at 12:17 pm

Can you break down the affiliate sales more… like what products are you promoting?

Matt Huggins September 1, 2007 at 6:05 pm

I agree…even if you just break it down in a paragraph following the list of income sources you use or something, that would be nice to see for future posts!

Pranjal September 1, 2007 at 12:22 pm

simply amazing

TodayIsNotOverYet September 1, 2007 at 12:29 pm

is there a goal John?

DeboHobo September 1, 2007 at 1:01 pm

Probably to Take Over the World!!!

Jeremy Steele September 1, 2007 at 8:31 pm

I wonder if John has a pet named Pinky…. hmmm

DeboHobo September 2, 2007 at 8:08 pm

Probably because he is definitly the Brain

Terra Andersen September 1, 2007 at 4:59 pm

I imagine the goal is as much as possible?? You can NEVER make too much money!

Hamilton Ontario Web Design September 2, 2007 at 6:34 am

John has stated his goal many times…make as much money as possible with the blog.

I’m not sure if he ever imagined he would reach this level when he first started out over a year ago.

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:48 am

While his goal is to push the blog as far as possible, I hope people don’t mistakenly think that’s all he is about, because he still has integrity and money isn’t everything.

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 12:41 am

Global internet domination and more money than god!

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:50 am

That’s a bit farfetched lol, but a man can dream.

Kirenia September 1, 2007 at 12:30 pm

Not so bad… but I’ll do better… this is my 1st month blogging and I scored a $0.87

Matt Huggins September 1, 2007 at 6:08 pm

I started at barely above $1 in January, and I just made over $270 for August…don’t give up!

Making The Money September 2, 2007 at 12:43 am

It’s like a snowball effect, even John with all his connections has experienced it so nobody should give up after a month or 2.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:19 pm

It’s all about time and patience

Ash Haque September 1, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Man that figure is big, great job dude

Kenneth A. Dreyer September 1, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Hi there John,

Amazing income report this month. I’m must say, you are an true inspiration to us all. How you ever tought about starting a webmaster forum or something like that? Many of the big fishes out there (both in theblog and forum world) are really making the most of their sites. Just look at digitalpoint – they could make SOOO much more money if they wanted, without loosing their users.

Kenneth A. Dreyer September 1, 2007 at 12:34 pm

Oh, and btw! Could you break up the affiliate earnings a bit more?

rahul September 1, 2007 at 12:34 pm

now for unofficial John chow predict next month income , I guess 25k $
numbers quite inspiration for people like me

YC September 1, 2007 at 12:51 pm

Incredible figures – wonderful job! Still showing the world that you really can make money online.

Andrew September 1, 2007 at 12:53 pm

wow!! nice… incredible

GettyCash September 1, 2007 at 12:56 pm

My first month revenue is $25 USD  from TLA

Although it’s not alot but I am happy with that.

Its good start for new blogger like me hehe.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:12 pm

At least you’re making money from TLA, I haven’t made squat. But I know it takes time.

orha007 September 1, 2007 at 1:09 pm

I have right about your august income
What is prize???

Geedos September 3, 2007 at 7:37 pm

The chance to guess again come next month!

Gdog September 1, 2007 at 1:19 pm

Nice work John…that is really amazing considering this is summer, like you mentioned! Now when the heck am I gonna meet up with you guys for dot com pho?!

John Chow September 1, 2007 at 4:58 pm

You should have came today. Everyone was there.

Gdog September 1, 2007 at 5:43 pm

Damn it! Ah well, maybe next week. Pho Lan in Richmond, right? What time?

John Chow September 1, 2007 at 11:12 pm

Next week is Sally’s birthday. No Pho.

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 5:26 am

Happy Birthday to her in advance. That earnings total will be a nice birthday present for her!

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:13 pm

Happy advance birthday to Sally too. How old will she be?

Liberty and New Creation September 1, 2007 at 1:26 pm

Where are the other affiliate sales coming from, if you don’t mind me asking?

Chris Guthrie September 1, 2007 at 3:10 pm

Probably the other affiliate programs on his “Make Money” page.

Eric September 1, 2007 at 1:57 pm

John,

Awesome post. Congratz with your achievement.
Trully an inspiration to all of us.

Uh, by the way, you didn’t bought Darren Rowse house just sold did you

Tyson Williams September 1, 2007 at 2:14 pm

Congratulations on the amazing work! I am learning a lot from you and admire you ideas and approach to blogging. And you are also a fellow Canadian!

bob cobb September 1, 2007 at 2:23 pm

Congrats, I had a decent month for earnings too. Id be interested to know how much you actually make with kontera not counting the flat fee that they give you

Making The Money September 2, 2007 at 12:45 am

My Kontera is normally about 10% of Adsense earnings, but then again John’s sumped Adsense so that doesn’t help much!

Joshua September 1, 2007 at 2:26 pm

Is that all? I thought it was going to be something worth mentioning…

Chris Guthrie September 1, 2007 at 3:07 pm

Wow. That’s a huge increase and especially during the dead of summer lol! Dang, congrats on the new record. I see the snowball is growing even larger…

Storm Chaser Videographer September 1, 2007 at 3:41 pm

Wow Indeed! Great report and stats John. Likely on your way to breaking 20,000 next month.

Baseball Board Games September 1, 2007 at 3:53 pm

How come Kontera made exactly $1000 in both July and August?

Terra Andersen September 1, 2007 at 4:58 pm

Maybe Kontera secretely tops out after $1000?? I was wondering this too…??

Is Kontera really  in a bad way?

Chris Guthrie September 1, 2007 at 5:46 pm

I think that he has a CPM deal with Kontera (I believe you need 10,000 page views a day before they’ll make one for you). I had contacted Kontera about doing a CPM deal for one of my forums but didn’t meet the requirements (10k pageviews a day). Anyway, I can only assume that is the reason why his figures have been the same each month and the deal they have worked out is 1k a month based on an estimated number of page views he’ll get perhaps? I have been wondering about this as well, so perhaps John will answer.

John Chow September 1, 2007 at 11:14 pm

Kontera pays me a guaranteed minimum of $1,000 every month.

Terra Andersen September 2, 2007 at 2:09 am

That makes sense. But Can it increase? Or are you at a stalemate with Kontera? (not that $1000 is a low number…)

John Chow September 2, 2007 at 8:46 am

Yes it can increase if the blog hits certain performance levels.

DeboHobo September 2, 2007 at 8:33 am

What a deal, it that for referring others. What is that minimum for?

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:14 pm

He has a contract agreement with them. It’s something they’d have to contact you directly for, not everyone can get in on such a deal.

Webmaster Money September 2, 2007 at 10:09 am

I see that you are using Kontera to refer affiliates but they dont have referral program., at least I cannot find it.
Do you have some special deal with them? If I had better affilaite program than Kontera would it be possible to beat it somehow?

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Yes he has a deal with Kontera. It’s not something you can just get into, they’d have to contact you directly for that to happen.

Ryan Shamus September 1, 2007 at 3:58 pm

Awesome John!
Can I get that .35 cents I loaned you for chocolate milk in the 2nd grade now? I think you can cover it.

J September 1, 2007 at 4:09 pm

I’m currently using godady but when we get linked the server seems to stress out. I disabled plugins to help speed it up, seemed to help. I’m guessing you have a dedicated server. I think i might look into getting the deal”JohnChowRocks for 15% off any BlueFur’ This sounds like such a great deal. Thanks for the info John.

GnomeyNewt September 1, 2007 at 5:29 pm

Probably a good idea to move away from GoDaddy if you are having problems.

DeboHobo September 2, 2007 at 8:32 am

I use godaddy for websites. Their blogs are trash.

pj September 1, 2007 at 4:29 pm

I love this story!

GnomeyNewt September 1, 2007 at 5:27 pm

Wow, that is amazing! You can sing that song from teen witch… TOP THAT!

Carl Zetterlund September 1, 2007 at 5:46 pm

You’ve inspired to make my own income reports. Since I’ve just started trying to make money online, I’m only at $46.49

:)

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:22 pm

How long did it take to reach that?

Michael September 1, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Holly! $17,000+ is totally mind breaking!!! But I will be really amazed if you will set another record in the next month!

Chris Guthrie September 1, 2007 at 5:49 pm

He’ll easily make that, he mentioned in the post “On August 22, I unveiled a complete redesign of the blog with an emphasis placed on private ad sales. Even though all ads spots have been sold, their sales won’t count until this month.”

With this additional income I’m sure he’ll easy make a new record.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:22 pm

Yes, he’ll easily break 20k this month.

Eli September 1, 2007 at 6:13 pm

Not making much from TTZ

Etienne Teo September 1, 2007 at 6:16 pm

Your affiliate and review sales is high, great combination and without using google adsense and you are still able to chalk up $400+, John, thats a great report!

Search Engine Marketing September 1, 2007 at 7:00 pm

Wow John,
Great Job …
Darin

Skiing at Home September 1, 2007 at 7:15 pm

I think my August grand total was around $2.45

Maybe my niche market is too….niche?

I’m gonna keep plugging though, watch out John Chow! J/k!

chtanxw September 1, 2007 at 7:16 pm

It is indeed a very good income month after month. Not only that, I think it will increase progressively to a certain peak ($25K or $30K?).
It is a good blog to all of us. You motivated us to think of ways to make money other than Adsense.

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 9:02 pm

I reckon it’ll be close to 30k next month and just keeping heading north.

Google can’t be too happy though – John’s not making Adsense look good.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:16 pm

I don’t think adsense will care. They make enough as it is, what’s $700 to them from John’s site when they made $1.5 billion last year. I am sure it won’t make a dent in their pockets.

Max September 1, 2007 at 7:35 pm

Wow, congrats on the $17,000! That is awesome!

DrMBW September 1, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Excellent earnings! Do you think the redesign contributed much to your success? (– more than 41% greater than your previous high!)

Terra Andersen September 2, 2007 at 2:10 am

The redesign and new ad spots count towards next month’s income.

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Yep it’s frightening to think how much the September total will be with those new ad spots.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:17 pm

As I said before, I’ll estimate $23k+ this month.

Hip Hop September 1, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Wow I wish I could do that good one day

Wayne Liew September 1, 2007 at 8:31 pm

I wished so as well. Those are really really good figures…

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:24 pm

I think most of us would be happy to just make half that amount in one month.

Budget Babe September 1, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Has it only been me? I have not been able to access John’s site for 24 hrs till now. But judging from these comments, there’s been no problem. Hmmm…

Jeremy Steele September 1, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Sounds like your ISP is having some issues.

Budget Babe September 1, 2007 at 11:47 pm

Sounds like it too. At least I can get my fix of John Chow now! I’m very happy!!!

Jeremy Steele September 1, 2007 at 8:35 pm

I’m just wondering, John.. Will you be doing a monthly post for your “secret” blog you mentioned a while back (to try and go from a nobody to a somebody) ?

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:28 pm

He probably won’t disclose about it until he reaches a certain dollar amount or more.

Jamie September 1, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Those are some serious numbers. From a few posts that I’ve read on your site, it seems like adsense is a fairly poor performer. With hundreds of thousands of page views, it didn’t account for even $500! Time to start thinking about other ways to monotize my blog.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:29 pm

how many uniques and pageviews do you have?

Blain Reinkensmeyer September 1, 2007 at 10:45 pm

John, congrats on the numbers and thanks for being such a great inspiration man

GettyCash September 1, 2007 at 11:23 pm

I hope this gonna be the 100th comment for this post

I think in the next month JohnChow.com revenue will increase over 3K!

Terra Andersen September 2, 2007 at 2:12 am

I’m gonna say there will be an increase by at least 5K!

kanak September 1, 2007 at 11:37 pm

Congrats on great earning .. waiting to see more :D ..

Mike Klingler September 2, 2007 at 12:05 am

Nice!

Mike Klingler September 2, 2007 at 12:09 am

One thing I do wonder John, is why you don’t sell information products in a section for network marketers. I’m a very small time blogger, starting with a squarespace blog about 3 months ago with Agloco. I get about 3000 unique visitors a month right now, with about 300 on RSS. Small time. And yet, I put up an information product catoring ot network marketers and made $4000 this month.

I have been in network marketing my entire life and am excited about how to use the Internet to improve the business model. I see millions of network marketers looking for help to attract prospects to them using the net, while selling information products to break even on their ad budget. Magnetic Sponsoring by Mike Dillard and The Renegade now by Ann Sieg are extremely successful and just a sign of the beginning of this trend.

Are you looking at this area? It’s suprising to me that so many Internet marketers aren’t tapping into this.

I don’t know if that’s because you don’t know about it or have a specific reason not to go after it.

John Chow September 2, 2007 at 8:51 am

I am fully aware of how much e-products can make. I’m also fully aware that most of those products are worthless. The e-products industry has a bad image problem and I’m not going to degrade my brand by being part of it. Making money really isn’t the issue.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Well said.

Sarat Chandran September 2, 2007 at 12:33 am

Congrats, John, for the great figures! It inspires the rest of us to try. :P

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 5:32 am

It certainly does – and I can’t wait to see what the figures will be for next month with all the new advertising on the earnings chart. Mind boggling!

Skiing at Home September 2, 2007 at 5:54 pm

i say Amen to that! That figure is what some people earn in an entire year!

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:52 am

LOL that’s sad if you think about it.

Wahlau.NET September 2, 2007 at 1:08 am

wow..that is a huge leap from last month..

is the 8 advertisements banner for this new theme included? or it is prorated?

John Chow September 2, 2007 at 8:52 am

As stated in my post, the 8 spot starts this month. It was free for the advertisers during the nine days of August.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:32 pm

What a bonus!

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 9:07 pm

That’s very charitable of you! You must have been caught up in a none evil moment.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:18 pm

I am sure there is a hidden evil agenda behind it LOL

Joel Rivera September 2, 2007 at 1:08 am

Congratulation John good money earned this month, very inpressive.

250$ Contest September 2, 2007 at 1:08 am

Something’s fishy with kontera… how come it made you 1000$ exact in june/july/august?

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 9:08 pm

He’s got a private contract with them that guarantees his monthly income from Kontera.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Yes, its a deal that not everyone else can get into. BTW, why do you put the dollar sign after the dollar amount such as 250$ instead of $250 (correct way)?

Joel Rivera September 2, 2007 at 1:15 am

Good story John

Aaron September 2, 2007 at 2:38 am

Congratulations John, I struggle to make $100 a month! :)

How will you spend the money? Buying new car?
Do you plan to write a topic like:
“John Chow dot Com Spending Report – September 2007″
We like to hear that too.

john choe September 2, 2007 at 5:15 am

I am not ven making peanuts :???: :???:

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 5:29 am

I note your RSS subscriber chicklet is showing that numbers are slightly down to 7515 readers (from about 7800 earlier in the week) – do you often see such big fluctuations and do you think this will affect your income stream much?

chinaboy September 2, 2007 at 5:54 am

I guess because China Great Internet Wall just blocked Feedburner several days ago.

John Chow September 2, 2007 at 8:55 am

It’s a normal fluctuation. Traffic is lower in the weekend. RSS count normally peaks on Wed. and pulls back again. However, the trend is up.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:36 pm

Would you say the most active day on the internet is Wednesday usually?

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 9:10 pm

I’m also interested to know which is the most profitable day of the week? I don’t know if you have analysed your traffic and earnings to that level?

I just wondered if you save what you consider to be your best posts for certain days of the week?

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:55 am

It’d be a good case study if anyone wants to measure it, it’d also be good to measure different weeks for comparison such as the first week of the month versus the last week, etc.

CatherineL September 2, 2007 at 5:39 am

I think it’s great that you’ve posted these results. There’s a lot of hype on the Internet about Adsense, but it’s clear that there are far better earners available to bloggers than Adsense.

But I notice that your paid reviews were your second biggest earner this month. Do you think the bad review you gave to that get rich site this month might affect those earnings in the future? Or have you already come up with a better way to replace them?

KingJacob September 2, 2007 at 7:51 am

I doubt it, cause there are plenty of people with products that arent scams that are willing to pay for a review.

John Chow September 2, 2007 at 8:57 am

I’ve given negative reviews in the pasts. They have no effect on RevewMe orders.

Scam September 2, 2007 at 9:05 am

I think giving negative reviews actually adds to your integrity and credibility, thereby increasing the value of the positive reviews you subsequently give.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Honest reviews is key, and that’s exactly what John does, give his honest opinion.

Marcus September 2, 2007 at 5:51 am

So now for the real BIG question…
Is John Chow really Evil?

http://www.thethoughts.co.uk/thoughts/is-john-chow-really-evil/

sweetlou89109 September 2, 2007 at 6:41 am

What about income from Bidvertiser, Agloco, Auction Ads and Azoogle Ads?
None?

John Chow September 2, 2007 at 8:57 am

Those are grouped in Affiliate Sales.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:42 pm

I don’t think Agloco is actually producing any real income (yet, if at all).

HalOtis September 2, 2007 at 7:35 am

Amazing numbers John. now if only I could replicate you success.

Dave September 2, 2007 at 8:35 am

I would be interested in knowing how many hours a month I would have to put in to make $12,000 per month on the Internet.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:44 pm

It highly depends on how you plan on generating income, and even then, the numbers will vary greatly. It depends on if you’re just starting, whether or not you’ve already develop an audience aka traffic, and what you are doing. There is no set answer for this question.

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 9:13 pm

John is on record as saying that he treats this blog as a hobby and just something he does on the side. I’m sure I’ve read that he spends on average about half an hour a day on it.

I’m not sure if that is still the case as he puts more and more focus on growing its income each month? For me, if you’re serious about earning money from your website then you need to be prepared to spend some serious time at it.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:20 pm

I agree with Geedos, effort and time is needed for anything you truly value in life, especially when you want to generate some serious cashflow with it. It may not end up that way in the long run when you’ve built a self sustaining business but in the short run, it is a must.

CatherineL September 2, 2007 at 9:13 am

John – I notice you only spent about 3.5 % of sales on marketing in Google Adwords. If you increased that spend to 10 – 15% of this months sales how much do you reckon you could turn over next month. And would you just use Adwords, or add other methods of marketing?

will September 2, 2007 at 9:22 am

These stats make mine look so small…

Webmaster Money September 2, 2007 at 10:15 am

I can not be small… I will be always 207cm tall (6’10”) :)

sitefever September 2, 2007 at 9:37 am

John, you should dump RevewMe, charge $300 for a paid review directly and make $5,300/mo. for paid reviews. I don’t think that anyone who buys a paid review on your site never heard of you before seeing your site on ReviewMe. I’m sure most people who order reviews are already familiar with your blog.

You will probably get more paid reviews coming in if they were $100 cheaper- and you would still be making 50% more than you were before.

John Chow September 2, 2007 at 11:32 am
Steven September 2, 2007 at 7:46 pm

This is true, most people on here thinks John is all about the money. While his goal is to push and see how much money he can make, it’s not always about that. There are times when it may seem that way, but in general, that’s not what John is all about.

DeboHobo September 2, 2007 at 10:01 am

Grand Total: $17,828.61 is an amazing amount. How much of that do you get to bank after paying EBITDA?

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 9:22 pm

I couldn’t agree more. Sound advice. I’m glad someone finally made that point.

Technobuzz.net September 2, 2007 at 10:02 am

Great figures John.

Geedos September 2, 2007 at 9:23 pm

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:56 am

LOL busted!

Danny @ MarketTreasure.com September 2, 2007 at 10:06 am

Well those figures just continue to amaze me, keep it up John.

David Savage September 2, 2007 at 10:07 am

John, I find it amazing how you make soooo much with only 170,000 monthly visitors. My site got 20,000 uniques in August and I only make about $150 (from adsense). Can you suggest the best ad system (besides TLA)?

Steven September 2, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Go to his moneymakers recommended page.

Webmaster Money September 2, 2007 at 10:13 am

OK for some people it would be enough to make $1000 per month to quit their jobs and some people would set some limits lets say $10.000 per month… this money is a lot and I couldnt imagine how to spend it with current lifestyle.
Do you have also some limit where you cannot imagine what to do with it? Because money is not everything :) I know that you do it for fun

Simon September 2, 2007 at 10:22 am

Very impressive!

MyBlogCotest September 2, 2007 at 10:23 am

Amazing success. You really make big money online.

If you live in US or Canada, you will know $1,000 is notthing.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 8:26 pm

I agree. $1000 is less than minimum wage full time. Personally minimum wage is considered to be poverty to me.

Webmaster Money September 3, 2007 at 7:58 am

In Canada it is nothing but in some coutries it is avarage mothly income…. And there is much more countires where you get much less.
Did you think about the fact that there is much more people who even dont know what is Internet than those who have seen computer?

Mike Klingler September 2, 2007 at 10:32 am

Hi John, I read that you wrote that the eBooks product industry has a bad image. I figured it must have been a conscious decision for you.

I think the making money blogging industry has a bad image too, but when someone is offering a real value or service, like you are, then the making money blogging model seems like a good deal.

I think it’s the same for the eBook industry or anywhere else. If there is a real value exchanged than it’s a good thing.

Partner in success,
Mike Klingler

CatherineL September 2, 2007 at 1:08 pm

Hi again John – you didn’t answer my question about increasing your marketing budget. And would you use other forms of marketing aside from adwords? Do you think it is worth you doing paid ads on other sites, or would you not make enough money from them?

John Chow September 2, 2007 at 3:56 pm

There is no need to increase the budget at this time.

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:23 pm

For John, there is no need. But what would you recommend for n00bs John.

yourtradingstock September 2, 2007 at 1:08 pm

Is AuctionAds making you any money?

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:24 pm

I think he mentioned in a previous post how much he was earning when he had it running. If my memory serves me correctly, it wasn’t much and he decided it wasn’t worth his time using it. Things may have changed since AuctionAds got bought over though.

PayDayPatch September 2, 2007 at 1:15 pm

I am a newbie and had no idea it could be this profitable.

I was thinking that that the website would look better without a bunch of ads. But now that I think of it I never really payed attention to them on your site and obviously it is working. I think I have some work to do.
Thanks for the insight.

It will be fun to one day see the Agloco income included in your spread! I haven’t gotten a member update from Agloco for quite some time, but I’m assuming they just started sending out the member emails again because I’ve gotten about 2000 uniques to my site today and that’s the only way I can imagine that hapenned.

John, are you still feeling good about Agloco?

John Chow September 3, 2007 at 10:42 am

I won’t be making another AGLOCO update until I have more gound breaking news.

NothingMan September 2, 2007 at 6:29 pm

wolaile September 2, 2007 at 6:34 pm

why wed is a trough ?

James September 2, 2007 at 9:23 pm

John ur adsense earnings are low. why?

Steven September 2, 2007 at 9:27 pm

He’s explained it several times already in several posts. During the summer, advertisement slows down as a whole, and thus each click is worth much less than they do the rest of the year. As a result, you can have a much higher number of clicks, and generate less through adsense. It’s the reason he’s getting rid of it altogether, that and there is a much higher potential for him to earn more through direct ad sales.

somedudewhoquitbloggingbecauseofgooglesinterference September 3, 2007 at 12:25 am

Congrats fellow Canadian, well done! I also commend you on dropping AdSense. AdBrite will outperform AdSense and AdWords these days so i’m not surprised to see AdSense couldn’t even manage half of what Kontera did.

David September 3, 2007 at 12:55 am

That is 50% of my yearly pay…in one month…
My current goal is around 10% of your August earnings as an addition to my problogging salary. Possible? I think so.

Again, congrats. I’ll be super interested to see how you top it in September.

Steven September 3, 2007 at 12:58 am

Of course it’s possible, just work hard towards your goal

David September 3, 2007 at 4:28 pm

Thanks Steven. :) I am sure you are right, I just have to be patient and put lots of effort into it.

CatherineL September 3, 2007 at 3:29 am

But John, surely if a marketing strategy was working well you’d want to multiply it. Or do you not have a way of measuring which of your Google Ads coverted to sales and which came from organic traffic?

Steven September 3, 2007 at 4:37 am

That’s a good question, I would like to know that too John.

sandossu September 3, 2007 at 7:29 am

Good job, john. You really have a nice income from this blog.

I was curious if you’ve tried the AdSense Referrals, versus the AdSense for Content? I don’t have any particular attachment, but I was wondering if the Referrals might produce more income?

Mahesh Mohan September 5, 2007 at 7:41 am

Your AdSense income is low…. maybe coz of the content…

Shaun September 5, 2007 at 9:07 am

He also doesn’t have many AdSense ads…I can understand that though. I’m looking to branch out soon, myself.

Truly inspirational income stats John. That is why this and a select few are the only making money blogs i visit. Seems like everyone these days wants to start one. Unless you are making $ and walking the walk it’s a waste of time. Giants like John have emerged. Only stat I thought would be higher was Kontera! The affiliate stat was an eye opener; time to start looking for a program suitable to my site. Thanks for being so upfront and sharing your stats John.

John, I must say, this is impressive. I am amazed. I knew there was potential on the internet, but you sir, you have pushed the limit. For a single man to make that much money from his blog. It’s insane. Keep up the good work. I appologize for not finding and commenting this post sooner. John, do you happen to be a fan of poetry? I have a blog I am just starting. Give it a look http://poeticmoney.blogspot.com

Great going for August.

The key thing to remember for monetized blogs is to not put all your eggs in one basket. If you truly want to generate meaningful income from your site, diversification is key!

Well done John. Good luck to everyone with money making blogging endeavours!
