John Chow dot Com Income Report – August 2007
It’s time for the much anticipated blog income report! These are exciting times here at John Chow dot Com. Summer is about over and companies are getting ready for the advertising bonanza that happens in the fall/winter months. As a blog, I’m surprised at how well I’ve done during these summer months. I expected income to drop but it had held steady and even managed to set a new record.
Almost a year ago, I decided to use this blog as a monetization case study to see if is was really possible to make money by blogging and since John Chow dot Com was the only blog I own, it made sense to use it. Starting with just Google AdSense, the blog made $352.94 in its first month, went up from there and finished off May 2007 at a record $12,569.61 in total blog income. In July, income pulled back a bit but came in at a still respectable $12,406.76.
On August 22, I unveiled a complete redesign of the blog with an emphasis placed on private ad sales. Even though all ads spots have been sold, their sales won’t count until this month. The advertisers were given the nine days in August for free. How did the blog do without the new private ad services? Pretty damn good!
Total Blog Income For August 2007: $17,828.61
The amazing thing about the income figure – aside from the number itself – is I set it in the heart the summer. The other amazing thing is it will most likely be broken next month as those private ad spots kick in. Here is the income breakdown.
- Affiliate Sales: $7,244.00
- ReviewMe: $4,200.00
- Private Ad Sales: $2,370.00
- Text Link Ads: $2,157.88
- Kontera: $1,000
- Google AdSense: $490.94
- FeedBurner: $131.18
- Buy Me a Beer: $117.99
- TTZ Media: $66.62
- Subscription: $50.00
- Grand Total: $17,828.61
Blog traffic in August was 337,852 page views from 170,465 visitors. A nice increase from the 319,165 page views posted the month before. RSS subscriptions are at a record high 7,836 readers and should break 8,000 this month. Traffic wise, everything is looking up!
Affiliate sales continues to be the blog’s biggest money maker. I promote a bunch of different programs, with an emphasis placed on programs that pays a residue income. The best performing affiliate program for August was Text Link Ads, accounting for $2,500 of the $7,244 affiliate income. Yes, I make more from the TLA affiliate program than I do from the TLA links.
Google AdSense posted its second worst performance ever. It now accounts for less than 3% of blog income. This month it will account for zero. Yes, the ad network that started John Chow dot Com will be eliminated from the blog. This illustrates the importance of spreading out your income sources. I started with Google AdSense. If I had stuck with them and added nothing else, the blog’s income wouldn’t be all that impressive. I run as many advertising systems as I can get away with while still offering a good user experience. Check out my recommended moneymakers to find out more about all the ad networks I use.

Congratulations on the awesome stats- traffic and income! We all knew things would be looking up for you this month.
My August stats report will be up on my blog this afternoon.
And he didn’t even considered the $8k of the banner slots for this month… This is a great income John i knew it would grow (but i was kinda calculating also the income from the banners) but you surprised me totally, without those banners you managed the 17k U.S. dollars income.

If you think about it, from September 2006 to August 2007, it’s been exactly 12 months of monetization. Your 1 year income comes to a total of $91,208.55!
That’s crazy Steve! At this pace Chow will be making $91,208 a month by next year.

What is the status on the Agloco program? I haven’t seen any up date on that. I still think it is nothing more than a bunch of spyware. To get the viewbar it sends you to a site and guess what the logo is, two cows and the url is http://www.tucows.com/preview/515079

The affiliate income alone is $7,244. That would be enough for me for the month, and for John Chow too. That’s a complete salary, and beyond. John has $10,000 in excedent. He should give it to us, his regular readers. Or he should start a contest and make somebody win those $10,000. That way, he would be a real dot com mogul: “willing to help others mmo”.
$10,000 would be enormous for us all to reach our goal faster. Dont’ you think?

This isn’t the first time his blog has seen exponential growth, but for it to grow that much without accounting for the new theme and ad slots is definitely a big leap.
The power of directly selling your own adverts.
And I still think this is an area that hasn’t been exploited to its full potential yet by John.
I am sure there are a lot of unexplored areas but sooner or later John will get to all of them he deems fit.

John’s fast proving the sky’s the limit – it’s amazing what you can do once you’ve built some momentum – this sites money making capacity just seems to get bigger and bigger.
This site will continue to grow, I really can’t wait to see how much it will change by this time next year.

And I think you should give some more details about Affiliate Sales earnings, besides TLA, like which program make how much.
That will catch readers eyes, and readers will try themselves. Your Affiliate Sales will also benefit.
I agree with this! A lot of us get a little flustered and confused when it just says “affiliate sales” *=)
I think in a previous post not to long ago, John did a brief breakdown of all his affiliate sales (or at least most). You can probably find the post if you scroll back a few pages (probably a few more since his site has been reduced from 10 posts per page to 5 posts per page). But I am sure an update wouldn’t hurt since he may have increase the number of his affiliate sales by now.
The numbers John is pulling down are amazing. Eventhough what would be major bottle necks for many of us, John manages to pass through, over or around them with unbelievable ease.
Yes he seems to have such a focus and an ability to market this site that he just keeps on growing and growing. It’s quite inspiring to the rest of us really.

Kontera and Bidvertiser are starting to irritate me, pretty much non- producers. But me Coffee is doing a hell of a lot better than I ever imagined.

What’s most impressive to me is the income relative to the number of visitors. In a month I get a lot more visitors and page views than John’s blog but a good months income is half what John is earning. The Make Money Online market is obviously still a great place to be!
John is a master at monetizing his traffic, he’s probably got one of the highest CPMs in the industry.
It helps when your target audience is people interested in making money online
I agree with KingJacob on this one, it’s about your target audience but also how you choose to monetize your site.
It what industry though? Is blogging an industry or making money online? Whatever it is he’s sure got it down to a fine art.
How do you monetize your site? Do you utilise all the different methods that John does?
Don’t beat yourself up – it sounds like with the traffic you are getting you should be able to play around with your monetization and improve your earnings.
A lot of people struggle to build their traffic in the first place and without that it’s virtually impossible to make decent money from a site. You’ve already got half the job done.
I agree here. You should look over John’s eBook again for hints on how you can take it to the next level. As always, don’t rely heavily on one income source.

I started at barely above $1 in January, and I just made over $270 for August…don’t give up!
It’s like a snowball effect, even John with all his connections has experienced it so nobody should give up after a month or 2.

Many of the big fishes out there (both in theblog and forum world) are really making the most of their sites. Just look at digitalpoint – they could make SOOO much more money if they wanted, without loosing their users.

My Kontera is normally about 10% of Adsense earnings, but then again John’s sumped Adsense so that doesn’t help much!

I think that he has a CPM deal with Kontera (I believe you need 10,000 page views a day before they’ll make one for you). I had contacted Kontera about doing a CPM deal for one of my forums but didn’t meet the requirements (10k pageviews a day). Anyway, I can only assume that is the reason why his figures have been the same each month and the deal they have worked out is 1k a month based on an estimated number of page views he’ll get perhaps? I have been wondering about this as well, so perhaps John will answer.

Yes it can increase if the blog hits certain performance levels.
What a deal, it that for referring others. What is that minimum for?
He has a contract agreement with them. It’s something they’d have to contact you directly for, not everyone can get in on such a deal.
I see that you are using Kontera to refer affiliates but they dont have referral program., at least I cannot find it.

Yes he has a deal with Kontera. It’s not something you can just get into, they’d have to contact you directly for that to happen.

I’m currently using godady but when we get linked the server seems to stress out. I disabled plugins to help speed it up, seemed to help. I’m guessing you have a dedicated server. It is indeed a very good income month after month. Not only that, I think it will increase progressively to a certain peak ($25K or $30K?).
It is a good blog to all of us. You motivated us to think of ways to make money other than Adsense.
I reckon it’ll be close to 30k next month and just keeping heading north.
Google can’t be too happy though – John’s not making Adsense look good.
I don’t think adsense will care. They make enough as it is, what’s $700 to them from John’s site when they made $1.5 billion last year. I am sure it won’t make a dent in their pockets.

Those are some serious numbers. From a few posts that I’ve read on your site, it seems like adsense is a fairly poor performer. With hundreds of thousands of page views, it didn’t account for even $500! Time to start thinking about other ways to monotize my blog.

One thing I do wonder John, is why you don’t sell information products in a section for network marketers. I’m a very small time blogger, starting with a squarespace blog about 3 months ago with Agloco. I get about 3000 unique visitors a month right now, with about 300 on RSS. Small time. And yet, I put up an information product catoring ot network marketers and made $4000 this month.
I have been in network marketing my entire life and am excited about how to use the Internet to improve the business model. I see millions of network marketers looking for help to attract prospects to them using the net, while selling information products to break even on their ad budget. Magnetic Sponsoring by Mike Dillard and The Renegade now by Ann Sieg are extremely successful and just a sign of the beginning of this trend.
Are you looking at this area? It’s suprising to me that so many Internet marketers aren’t tapping into this.
I don’t know if that’s because you don’t know about it or have a specific reason not to go after it.
I am fully aware of how much e-products can make. I’m also fully aware that most of those products are worthless. The e-products industry has a bad image problem and I’m not going to degrade my brand by being part of it. Making money really isn’t the issue.

I note your RSS subscriber chicklet is showing that numbers are slightly down to 7515 readers (from about 7800 earlier in the week) – do you often see such big fluctuations and do you think this will affect your income stream much?
I guess because China Great Internet Wall just blocked Feedburner several days ago.
It’s a normal fluctuation. Traffic is lower in the weekend. RSS count normally peaks on Wed. and pulls back again. However, the trend is up.
Would you say the most active day on the internet is Wednesday usually?
I’m also interested to know which is the most profitable day of the week? I don’t know if you have analysed your traffic and earnings to that level?
I just wondered if you save what you consider to be your best posts for certain days of the week?
It’d be a good case study if anyone wants to measure it, it’d also be good to measure different weeks for comparison such as the first week of the month versus the last week, etc.
I think it’s great that you’ve posted these results. There’s a lot of hype on the Internet about Adsense, but it’s clear that there are far better earners available to bloggers than Adsense.
But I notice that your paid reviews were your second biggest earner this month. Do you think the bad review you gave to that get rich site this month might affect those earnings in the future? Or have you already come up with a better way to replace them?
I doubt it, cause there are plenty of people with products that arent scams that are willing to pay for a review.
I’ve given negative reviews in the pasts. They have no effect on RevewMe orders.
I think giving negative reviews actually adds to your integrity and credibility, thereby increasing the value of the positive reviews you subsequently give.
Honest reviews is key, and that’s exactly what John does, give his honest opinion.

It highly depends on how you plan on generating income, and even then, the numbers will vary greatly. It depends on if you’re just starting, whether or not you’ve already develop an audience aka traffic, and what you are doing. There is no set answer for this question.
John is on record as saying that he treats this blog as a hobby and just something he does on the side. I’m sure I’ve read that he spends on average about half an hour a day on it.
I’m not sure if that is still the case as he puts more and more focus on growing its income each month? For me, if you’re serious about earning money from your website then you need to be prepared to spend some serious time at it.
I agree with Geedos, effort and time is needed for anything you truly value in life, especially when you want to generate some serious cashflow with it. It may not end up that way in the long run when you’ve built a self sustaining business but in the short run, it is a must.
John – I notice you only spent about 3.5 % of sales on marketing in Google Adwords. If you increased that spend to 10 – 15% of this months sales how much do you reckon you could turn over next month. And would you just use Adwords, or add other methods of marketing?

John, you should dump RevewMe, charge $300 for a paid review directly and make $5,300/mo. for paid reviews. I don’t think that anyone who buys a paid review on your site never heard of you before seeing your site on ReviewMe. I’m sure most people who order reviews are already familiar with your blog.
You will probably get more paid reviews coming in if they were $100 cheaper- and you would still be making 50% more than you were before.

John, I find it amazing how you make soooo much with only 170,000 monthly visitors. My site got 20,000 uniques in August and I only make about $150 (from adsense). Can you suggest the best ad system (besides TLA)?

I agree. $1000 is less than minimum wage full time. Personally minimum wage is considered to be poverty to me.
In Canada it is nothing but in some coutries it is avarage mothly income…. And there is much more countires where you get much less.

Hi John, I read that you wrote that the eBooks product industry has a bad image. I figured it must have been a conscious decision for you.
I think the making money blogging industry has a bad image too, but when someone is offering a real value or service, like you are, then the making money blogging model seems like a good deal.
I think it’s the same for the eBook industry or anywhere else. If there is a real value exchanged than it’s a good thing.

I think he mentioned in a previous post how much he was earning when he had it running. If my memory serves me correctly, it wasn’t much and he decided it wasn’t worth his time using it. Things may have changed since AuctionAds got bought over though.
I am a newbie and had no idea it could be this profitable.
I was thinking that that the website would look better without a bunch of ads. But now that I think of it I never really payed attention to them on your site and obviously it is working. I think I have some work to do.

John ur adsense earnings are low. why?
He’s explained it several times already in several posts. During the summer, advertisement slows down as a whole, and thus each click is worth much less than they do the rest of the year. As a result, you can have a much higher number of clicks, and generate less through adsense. It’s the reason he’s getting rid of it altogether, that and there is a much higher potential for him to earn more through direct ad sales.
Congrats fellow Canadian, well done! I also commend you on dropping AdSense. AdBrite will outperform AdSense and AdWords these days so i’m not surprised to see AdSense couldn’t even manage half of what Kontera did.
That is 50% of my yearly pay…in one month…
My current goal is around 10% of your August earnings as an addition to my problogging salary. Possible? I think so.
