John Chow dot Com Income Report – August 2007

written by John Chow on September 1st, 2007

It’s time for the much anticipated blog income report! These are exciting times here at John Chow dot Com. Summer is about over and companies are getting ready for the advertising bonanza that happens in the fall/winter months. As a blog, I’m surprised at how well I’ve done during these summer months. I expected income to drop but it had held steady and even managed to set a new record.

Almost a year ago, I decided to use this blog as a monetization case study to see if is was really possible to make money by blogging and since John Chow dot Com was the only blog I own, it made sense to use it. Starting with just Google AdSense, the blog made $352.94 in its first month, went up from there and finished off May 2007 at a record $12,569.61 in total blog income. In July, income pulled back a bit but came in at a still respectable $12,406.76.

On August 22, I unveiled a complete redesign of the blog with an emphasis placed on private ad sales. Even though all ads spots have been sold, their sales won’t count until this month. The advertisers were given the nine days in August for free. How did the blog do without the new private ad services? Pretty damn good!

Total Blog Income For August 2007: $17,828.61

The amazing thing about the income figure – aside from the number itself – is I set it in the heart the summer. The other amazing thing is it will most likely be broken next month as those private ad spots kick in. Here is the income breakdown.

Blog traffic in August was 337,852 page views from 170,465 visitors. A nice increase from the 319,165 page views posted the month before. RSS subscriptions are at a record high 7,836 readers and should break 8,000 this month. Traffic wise, everything is looking up!

Affiliate sales continues to be the blog’s biggest money maker. I promote a bunch of different programs, with an emphasis placed on programs that pays a residue income. The best performing affiliate program for August was Text Link Ads, accounting for $2,500 of the $7,244 affiliate income. Yes, I make more from the TLA affiliate program than I do from the TLA links.

Google AdSense posted its second worst performance ever. It now accounts for less than 3% of blog income. This month it will account for zero. Yes, the ad network that started John Chow dot Com will be eliminated from the blog. This illustrates the importance of spreading out your income sources. I started with Google AdSense. If I had stuck with them and added nothing else, the blog’s income wouldn’t be all that impressive. I run as many advertising systems as I can get away with while still offering a good user experience. Check out my recommended moneymakers to find out more about all the ad networks I use.

Blog advertising expenses for the month was $585.46 for Google Adwords. Hosting for John Chow dot Com is sponsored by BlueFur Web Hosting. Use coupon code JohnChowRocks for 15% off any BlueFur hosting packages. The blog redesigned was done by Nate Whitehill of Unique Blog Designs for considerations other than cash.

If you haven’t already done so, I high recommend you sign up for my newsletter. Not only is the newsletter free but you also get my ebook, Make Money Online with John Chow dot Com, for free when you sign up. Every time I post an earnings recap, I get bombarded with emails from readers asking how I did it and how they could do it. Many of these questions have already been answered in the ebook.

September is considered the turn around month for the Internet money train. Kids will be going back to school and advertisers will be ramping up for the fall/winter season. Now is the best time to get that blog started. If you think what I’ve done this month is amazing, stick around. Your eyes are about to be open even wider.

  1. Congratulations on the awesome stats- traffic and income! We all knew things would be looking up for you this month.

My August stats report will be up on my blog this afternoon.

  2. chinaboy

10 days 300×250 ad spothas not been flipped yet?

Rich4life said he owned till 9th September 2007 from 29th August 2007 onwards.
If so, it’s less than 10 days now.

Anyway, the number is great. I bet next month will at least $25000, even around $30000.

  3. Very Impressive John… I wonder what you will use to replace Adsese

  4. How much are you paying for your server? :???:

  5. chinaboy

And I think you should give some more details about Affiliate Sales earnings, besides TLA, like which program make how much.

That will catch readers eyes, and readers will try themselves. Your Affiliate Sales will also benefit.

  6. The numbers John is pulling down are amazing. Eventhough what would be major bottle necks for many of us, John manages to pass through, over or around them with unbelievable ease.

  7. Its interesting to note you earn $1000 from Kontera every month. Are you in a special deal with them?

  8. Hmm…I’m getting there! I reached a new high at $270.16. :P Okay, so maybe I’m actually not that close…

  9. That was 6k over my estimate ,pretty impressive, does the 7k from affiliate sales iclude your recommended moneymakers, if so thats doubly impressive.

  10. Kontera and Bidvertiser are starting to irritate me, pretty much non- producers. But me Coffee is doing a hell of a lot better than I ever imagined.

  11. What’s most impressive to me is the income relative to the number of visitors. In a month I get a lot more visitors and page views than John’s blog but a good months income is half what John is earning. The Make Money Online market is obviously still a great place to be!

  12. Wow! Looks like you’re getting there. This month on my blog I earnt the just as much as you did in your first month. Wh knows what the next six months’ll bring?! ;)

  13. The numbers are too impressive, it is destroying my eyes..

  14. Can you break down the affiliate sales more… like what products are you promoting?

  15. Not so bad… but I’ll do better… this is my 1st month blogging and I scored a $0.87

  16. Hi there John,

Amazing income report this month. I’m must say, you are an true inspiration to us all. How you ever tought about starting a webmaster forum or something like that? Many of the big fishes out there (both in theblog and forum world) are really making the most of their sites. Just look at digitalpoint – they could make SOOO much more money if they wanted, without loosing their users.

  17. Oh, and btw! Could you break up the affiliate earnings a bit more?

  18. now for unofficial John chow predict next month income , I guess 25k $
numbers quite inspiration for people like me

  19. Incredible figures – wonderful job! Still showing the world that you really can make money online.

  20. My first month revenue is $25 USD  from TLA

Although it’s not alot but I am happy with that.

Its good start for new blogger like me hehe.

  21. I have right about your august income
    What is prize???

  22. Nice work John…that is really amazing considering this is summer, like you mentioned! Now when the heck am I gonna meet up with you guys for dot com pho?!

  23. Where are the other affiliate sales coming from, if you don’t mind me asking?

  24. John,

Awesome post. Congratz with your achievement.
Trully an inspiration to all of us.

Uh, by the way, you didn’t bought Darren Rowse house just sold did you

  25. Congratulations on the amazing work! I am learning a lot from you and admire you ideas and approach to blogging. And you are also a fellow Canadian!

  26. Congrats, I had a decent month for earnings too. Id be interested to know how much you actually make with kontera not counting the flat fee that they give you

  27. Is that all? I thought it was going to be something worth mentioning…

  28. Wow. That’s a huge increase and especially during the dead of summer lol! Dang, congrats on the new record. I see the snowball is growing even larger…

  29. Wow Indeed! Great report and stats John. Likely on your way to breaking 20,000 next month.

  30. How come Kontera made exactly $1000 in both July and August?

  31. Awesome John!
Can I get that .35 cents I loaned you for chocolate milk in the 2nd grade now? I think you can cover it.

  32. J

I’m currently using godady but when we get linked the server seems to stress out. I disabled plugins to help speed it up, seemed to help. I’m guessing you have a dedicated server. I think i might look into getting the deal”JohnChowRocks for 15% off any BlueFur’ This sounds like such a great deal. Thanks for the info John.

  33. Wow, that is amazing! You can sing that song from teen witch… TOP THAT!

  34. You’ve inspired to make my own income reports. Since I’ve just started trying to make money online, I’m only at $46.49

    :)

  35. Michael

Holly! $17,000+ is totally mind breaking!!! But I will be really amazed if you will set another record in the next month!

  36. Your affiliate and review sales is high, great combination and without using google adsense and you are still able to chalk up $400+, John, thats a great report!

  37. I think my August grand total was around $2.45

Maybe my niche market is too….niche?

I’m gonna keep plugging though, watch out John Chow! J/k!

  38. It is indeed a very good income month after month. Not only that, I think it will increase progressively to a certain peak ($25K or $30K?).
It is a good blog to all of us. You motivated us to think of ways to make money other than Adsense.

  39.
Wow, congrats on the $17,000! That is awesome!

  40. Excellent earnings! Do you think the redesign contributed much to your success? (– more than 41% greater than your previous high!)

  41. Has it only been me? I have not been able to access John’s site for 24 hrs till now. But judging from these comments, there’s been no problem. Hmmm…

  42. I’m just wondering, John.. Will you be doing a monthly post for your “secret” blog you mentioned a while back (to try and go from a nobody to a somebody) ?

  43. Those are some serious numbers. From a few posts that I’ve read on your site, it seems like adsense is a fairly poor performer. With hundreds of thousands of page views, it didn’t account for even $500! Time to start thinking about other ways to monotize my blog.

  44. John, congrats on the numbers and thanks for being such a great inspiration man

  45. I hope this gonna be the 100th comment for this post

I think in the next month JohnChow.com revenue will increase over 3K!

  46. Congrats on great earning .. waiting to see more :D ..

  47. One thing I do wonder John, is why you don’t sell information products in a section for network marketers. I’m a very small time blogger, starting with a squarespace blog about 3 months ago with Agloco. I get about 3000 unique visitors a month right now, with about 300 on RSS. Small time. And yet, I put up an information product catoring ot network marketers and made $4000 this month.

I have been in network marketing my entire life and am excited about how to use the Internet to improve the business model. I see millions of network marketers looking for help to attract prospects to them using the net, while selling information products to break even on their ad budget. Magnetic Sponsoring by Mike Dillard and The Renegade now by Ann Sieg are extremely successful and just a sign of the beginning of this trend.

Are you looking at this area? It’s suprising to me that so many Internet marketers aren’t tapping into this.

I don’t know if that’s because you don’t know about it or have a specific reason not to go after it.

  48. Sarat Chandran

Congrats, John, for the great figures! It inspires the rest of us to try. :P

  49. wow..that is a huge leap from last month..

is the 8 advertisements banner for this new theme included? or it is prorated?

  50. Congratulation John good money earned this month, very inpressive.

  51. Something’s fishy with kontera… how come it made you 1000$ exact in june/july/august?

  52. Aaron

Congratulations John, I struggle to make $100 a month! :)

  53. Nice work!

I know you certainly don’t need it, but I’m offering free ad space on m site while I get off the ground (to make it look like people are paying ;-) ). There are 125×125 buttons and text links available if you’re interested. Full details here:

    http://blogsformoney.com/post/Free-Advertising-Space.aspx

  54. Well done, Mr. John.
How will you spend the money? Buying new car?
Do you plan to write a topic like:
“John Chow dot Com Spending Report – September 2007″
We like to hear that too.

  55. I note your RSS subscriber chicklet is showing that numbers are slightly down to 7515 readers (from about 7800 earlier in the week) – do you often see such big fluctuations and do you think this will affect your income stream much?

  56. I think it’s great that you’ve posted these results. There’s a lot of hype on the Internet about Adsense, but it’s clear that there are far better earners available to bloggers than Adsense.

But I notice that your paid reviews were your second biggest earner this month. Do you think the bad review you gave to that get rich site this month might affect those earnings in the future? Or have you already come up with a better way to replace them?

  57. What about income from Bidvertiser, Agloco, Auction Ads and Azoogle Ads?
    None?

  58. Amazing numbers John. now if only I could replicate you success.

  59. I would be interested in knowing how many hours a month I would have to put in to make $12,000 per month on the Internet.

    • It highly depends on how you plan on generating income, and even then, the numbers will vary greatly. It depends on if you’re just starting, whether or not you’ve already develop an audience aka traffic, and what you are doing. There is no set answer for this question.

    • John is on record as saying that he treats this blog as a hobby and just something he does on the side. I’m sure I’ve read that he spends on average about half an hour a day on it.

I’m not sure if that is still the case as he puts more and more focus on growing its income each month? For me, if you’re serious about earning money from your website then you need to be prepared to spend some serious time at it.

      • I agree with Geedos, effort and time is needed for anything you truly value in life, especially when you want to generate some serious cashflow with it. It may not end up that way in the long run when you’ve built a self sustaining business but in the short run, it is a must.

  60. John – I notice you only spent about 3.5 % of sales on marketing in Google Adwords. If you increased that spend to 10 – 15% of this months sales how much do you reckon you could turn over next month. And would you just use Adwords, or add other methods of marketing?

  61. These stats make mine look so small…

  62. John, you should dump RevewMe, charge $300 for a paid review directly and make $5,300/mo. for paid reviews. I don’t think that anyone who buys a paid review on your site never heard of you before seeing your site on ReviewMe. I’m sure most people who order reviews are already familiar with your blog.

You will probably get more paid reviews coming in if they were $100 cheaper- and you would still be making 50% more than you were before.

  63. Grand Total: $17,828.61 is an amazing amount. How much of that do you get to bank after paying EBITDA?

  64. 你真猛,全世界,顶属你的博客赚的多。

  65. Well those figures just continue to amaze me, keep it up John.

  66. John, I find it amazing how you make soooo much with only 170,000 monthly visitors. My site got 20,000 uniques in August and I only make about $150 (from adsense). Can you suggest the best ad system (besides TLA)?

  67. OK for some people it would be enough to make $1000 per month to quit their jobs and some people would set some limits lets say $10.000 per month… this money is a lot and I couldnt imagine how to spend it with current lifestyle.
Do you have also some limit where you cannot imagine what to do with it? Because money is not everything :) I know that you do it for fun

  68. Amazing success. You really make big money online.

  69. 我顶不动?
some people it would be enough to make $1000 per month to quit their jobs and some people would set some limits lets say $10.000 per month… this money is a lot and I couldnt imagine how to spend it with current lifestyle.

  70. Hi John, I read that you wrote that the eBooks product industry has a bad image. I figured it must have been a conscious decision for you.

I think the making money blogging industry has a bad image too, but when someone is offering a real value or service, like you are, then the making money blogging model seems like a good deal.

I think it’s the same for the eBook industry or anywhere else. If there is a real value exchanged than it’s a good thing.

    Partner in success,
    Mike Klingler

  71. Young Jedi you have learn’t well…your Adverts on the right side are not showing in IE7?

  72. Hi again John – you didn’t answer my question about increasing your marketing budget. And would you use other forms of marketing aside from adwords? Do you think it is worth you doing paid ads on other sites, or would you not make enough money from them?

  73. I am a newbie and had no idea it could be this profitable.

I was thinking that that the website would look better without a bunch of ads. But now that I think of it I never really payed attention to them on your site and obviously it is working. I think I have some work to do.
    Thanks for the insight.

  74. Wow…I can’t believe how many comments this post received. I guess I’m not the only one super curious about your monthly blogging income!

    – Raymond (MONEY BLUE BOOK)

  75. Just great. Now I know making monies from blogging is possible.

  76. In tanti chiedono come si fa a fare cosi tanti soldi. La risposta: C’è chi puo….

  77. It will be fun to one day see the Agloco income included in your spread! I haven’t gotten a member update from Agloco for quite some time, but I’m assuming they just started sending out the member emails again because I’ve gotten about 2000 uniques to my site today and that’s the only way I can imagine that hapenned.

John, are you still feeling good about Agloco?

  78. Holy Cow. Congrats. i I think I speak for everyone when I say your site motivates us all.

    • He’s explained it several times already in several posts. During the summer, advertisement slows down as a whole, and thus each click is worth much less than they do the rest of the year. As a result, you can have a much higher number of clicks, and generate less through adsense. It’s the reason he’s getting rid of it altogether, that and there is a much higher potential for him to earn more through direct ad sales.

  79. somedudewhoquitbloggingbecauseofgooglesinterference

Congrats fellow Canadian, well done! I also commend you on dropping AdSense. AdBrite will outperform AdSense and AdWords these days so i’m not surprised to see AdSense couldn’t even manage half of what Kontera did.

  80. That is 50% of my yearly pay…in one month…
My current goal is around 10% of your August earnings as an addition to my problogging salary. Possible? I think so.

Again, congrats. I’ll be super interested to see how you top it in September.

  81. But John, surely if a marketing strategy was working well you’d want to multiply it. Or do you not have a way of measuring which of your Google Ads coverted to sales and which came from organic traffic?

  82. Good job, john. You really have a nice income from this blog.

  83. Just signed up with Text Link Ads.
If it will make for me fourfold more than AdSense, I will be really happy :)

  84. I wonder how much money this post alone makes you!

  85. congrat ‘ s jhon…
    keep it up…:-)

  86. I was curious if you’ve tried the AdSense Referrals, versus the AdSense for Content? I don’t have any particular attachment, but I was wondering if the Referrals might produce more income?

  87. Your AdSense income is low…. maybe coz of the content…

  88. He also doesn’t have many AdSense ads…I can understand that though. I’m looking to branch out soon, myself.

  89. Truly inspirational income stats John. That is why this and a select few are the only making money blogs i visit. Seems like everyone these days wants to start one. Unless you are making $ and walking the walk it’s a waste of time. Giants like John have emerged. Only stat I thought would be higher was Kontera! The affiliate stat was an eye opener; time to start looking for a program suitable to my site. Thanks for being so upfront and sharing your stats John.

  90. Great job John, but I am sure you know that all ready. I know your a busy man and everything but was wandering with my site being 2 weeks old or so I have no got any income as of yet from any adds. I am going threw your ebook I downloaded kinda page by page and was wandering if you could take a few minuets of your time to fire threw my site or anyone else for that matter seeings how I am new to this and tell me what to work on next. http://www.yourworldgallery.com and please email me your thoughts @ collin_deruyck@yahoo.ca

  94. John, I must say, this is impressive. I am amazed. I knew there was potential on the internet, but you sir, you have pushed the limit. For a single man to make that much money from his blog. It’s insane. Keep up the good work. I appologize for not finding and commenting this post sooner. John, do you happen to be a fan of poetry? I have a blog I am just starting. Give it a look http://poeticmoney.blogspot.com

  95. Great going for August.

The key thing to remember for monetized blogs is to not put all your eggs in one basket. If you truly want to generate meaningful income from your site, diversification is key!
