John Chow dot Com LogoMyWay Design Contest

written by John Chow on May 25, 2009

How one lazy bum made $176,697.50

One of my new advertisers, LogoMyWay, asked me to check out their design service. Logomyway helps businesses connect with thousands of talented designers all over the world to help get the perfect logo. I figure the best way to test them out is to hold a design contest of my own.

Win $200 For Creating Me a Logo

I started the contest last night and already I’ve received six entries. LogoMyWay tells me that I should receive 250 to 300 entries before the contest is over. That’s a damn good return for a $200 investment. If you would like to enter my logo design contest, you can do so here.

In addition to making $200 cash, the winning entry will have their logo featured on this blog. That could bring you more design work. I’ll also be using the logo for my business stationary and T-shirts.

If you’re looking for a new logo, then LogoMyWay is a pretty great way to get it. Instead of employing one designer, you’re employing dozens of them. Creativity really flows when there is competition. The video below shows how easy it is to start a design contest. Give them a try.

$200 that is really good price for a logo. On that price many people can do website design as well.

We would love to see the logo of worth $200

Dude I'm a web designer and graphics designer so I'm entering to this contest. Hope you like ma designs.

While I enjoy reading your posts I have to admit I am greatly disgusted at the next level of exploitation artists have to deal with. Unfortunately this service only shows what little value is placed on art and graphic design. If you need a logo as described please pay industry standard compensation rather than forcing artists to fight over scraps.

Every industry has a similar method of exploiting people. This works well over the internet because there are many third world people and students willing to give away their time in return for a chance at a few dollars.

You can fight for a few dollars or you can build a reputation and demand proper wages. It is up to each person. The world is big enough to allow both to exist.

I was wondering when you'd post about them.

Looking at the entries, I think y3k_designs & yudhiecavalera & adi_elekes have the best logos. A little design in each, but not disgustingly overcrowded.

Great contest, I wish I had some designer skills...

A logo contest? That's soething I've been wanting to enter. I' a graphic design enthusiast though I don't have any serious background in designing. still, I'll try my luck :)

Liane’s last blog post: What is a Giveaway Event and How to Take Advantage Through Two Ways of Participating

You will see some great designs. The contest has 12 days to go and already 31 designs submitted in the first 24hrs. Designers can submit as many logo designs as they want. Once John logs into his account he will start to rank and eliminate logos giving designers even more direction when designing the logos. Keep an eye on this contest you will see some amazing designs :)

All of the 30 submitted logos are so bad I wouldn't take it if it were free.

DP Forum has really good logo contests. Submit $20-$50 logo contests, and you get about 20 submissions with about 3-4 really nice logos.

There are some seriously BAD designers on there. Isn't this also a ripoff of 99designs??? Please don't not publish this because they are a sponsor, they just need to attract better designers. I'm sure they could do that through twitter.

Chris Green’s last blog post: Design the New Twitter Logo

Cheap way to get a cheap logo. So far though the quality really shows of such a low $$ amount contest. No real originality shown thus far. I'll bookmark this item and check back later to see if the quality increases over time.

Cam Birch’s last blog post: Where Does Money Come From?

I have to agree. The current concepts look like they are just old Microsoft Office clip-art, touched up in paint, and covered with a layer of ugliness.

However, since it's only been a day, we can probably assume that the really good designers are still working on their concepts, taking their time. I'm sure something good will come up.

This might sound harsh but.. as of today (this comment posting) none of the logos designed look very professional nor do they speak out to me in the way that John has requested. Making Money, Blogging and Dot Com Mogul.

They all look like they were created in MS Word, or even MS Paint.

So how can I critize the work, if I don't have a logo posted? Well, I don't want to create John a logo, but there is a reason why you pay Top $$$ for a Company Logo. It's all about branding.

So far the logo you're using for your header now John, looks better than what other people have created!

Tyler’s last blog post: My First ThirdTuesday

Yeah, a lot of them are bad & look like hardly any real thought was put into them. There's a reason people pay big money for a good logo.

Asswass’s last blog post: Using Avatars to Brand your Company, Blog or Yourself

The logo isn't actually free. You have to pay the contest winner. By the looks of the number of entries being submitted you will also have to dig through the layers and layers of crap to find something good. All this costs time and money so, definately not free.

Cam Birch’s last blog post: Where Does Money Come From?

For a starter, def a nice way to get a logo. But for a dot com mogul, I'm sure he could just hire somebody directly and have a logo made. There are people on this site that have skill who I'm sure would make a logo in less time than the contest is going to take.

Internetsalsa’s last blog post: No boundaries for Adam Lambert

Sometimes though you find that you end up with "logoblock". Once you have been using one logo for quite some time and you start to feel that a new one could be useful for the brand, it can be hard to reinvent yourself. For $200 JC is getting a fresh take, that can be worth it all alone. Even if the logos suck he has some new ideas to pursue with an artist selected from the entrants.
