John Chow in the Richmond News

written by John Chow on March 22nd, 2008

richmondnews1.jpg

I’m in this week’s edition of the Richmond News newspaper. The Richmond News is a community paper that goes to every house and business in the city of Richmond. The paper got a hold of me because of The Province newspaper article about BC’s Dot Com Moguls.

This latest coverage underscores my post on how to get old world media coverage. In that post, I said you should started with the biggest paper in town and work down. If you can get into a really big paper like The Province, chances are good that the smaller community papers will want to talk to you and give you even more exposure. Every blogger should work on getting mainstream media coverage. It’s one of the things that will make you stand out from the 117+ million blogs (plus 175,000 more per day) out there.

The Richmond News article gave me a plug on the cover using the tag line “Million Dollar Blogger.” The writer got a few facts incorrect (I didn’t go from $3,400 to $30K in four months) but nothing major. You can read the full article by clicking on the image below.

My day job is at a community newspaper in Florida and never underestimate the power of the press! I am happy to help people put together press releases. Drop me a line and we can work something out.

Nice, congrats John.
When I first saw the thumbnail of the article, I saw the glanced over the author’s name and for a brief second when I saw “Mich”, I thought Mr. Kwan had written the article!

Interesting article, I actually learned a few things about John’s background in this one. Have you been back to your hometown? My parents went back to Canton 2 (maybe 3) years ago.

Your family still own it?
When my dad went back, he found the place completely rebuilt. The only thing left was the park/creek close to his home

Very good point about starting big and then going small… it’s much more effective than the other way around.

It isnt that easy.

By the way, I’ve been in newspapers before. I used to play chess. My photo was twice in the paper, once for being 8th in nationals. Another time for winning some competition, dont remember. I think more times, names have been a lot of times.

Congrats again John! I’m actually listening over the internet to a Richmond station right now (but its one Richmond, Virginia).

So you know how this process works right? Newspapers then magazine features, then radio, and then TV interviews. One medium might jump the gun, but that’s essentially the climb. By the end of this year I would NOT be surprised if you’re offered a show one of the cable channels. So expect to hear from G4 around Fall…

I say this a little sheepishly, but…

RE: The TechZone
“It’s a technology website that reviews high-tech products,” says Chow. “Manufacturers send me products and I review them.”

When was the last time you actually wrote a review for TTZ? It’s mostly the Michael Kwan Show these days. lol

Hi John,

Congratulation on your coverage by the Richmond News.

I actually keep that copy as a reminder that internet marketing really works.

I’ve learning a lot about internet marketing and reading about your success I think it is time to take action and jump into the water and start swimming.

I’m wondering if you would be so kind to show me some guidance and pointed me into the right direction in my internet marketing endeavor.

Thanks in advance,
Hardy

Congratulations, John! My wife read the article and showed it to her sister - who is still skeptical that you can make that much and that YOU are willing to talk about it and share how you did it. But you know what, now she’s after me to start making $30k per month!!!

Regards,

Mohamed

It would be nice to see a general breakdown of your revenue. The blog it making $30k per month, but that’s far from $1mm in revenue for 12-months time. That type of info would help teach readers how different internet properties work together, and which ones are making the larger percentage of your income, as well as shows that it’s possible to manage multiple internet properties all at the same time.
