If you live in the lower mainland and watch CityTV (channel 13), you would have saw me on Breakfast Television this morning. BT is CityTV’s morning news show. Most of the time, I catch the tail end of the show because I’m not a morning person (the show starts at 6AM and goes till 10AM).

Unlike the Lab with Leo, Breakfast Television is a live show. There’s no retake if you screw up. I showed up at 7:30 to get set up. I waited in the green room along with Lynda Pasacreta of the Better Business Bureau (talking about Scam Jam 2008) and FoodTV’s Anna Olson (talking about her new show, Fresh with Anna Olson).

I was interviewed by show host, Simi Sara, who did a really good job explaining how things would work. This is only the second time I’ve done a live interview. They’re a lot fun because you never know what might happen (the thought of destroying something did cross my mind).

All this media attention seems to be working. The blog is at a record high 22,291 RSS readers.

Media Exposure really is the best . . . now the thing is creating a way of making it more viral so more people watch to which you can get more interviews! Secret Words? Hidden Phrases? hmmmm

Well, that DOES work. Commenting on other blogs is a great way to build traffic….provided what you say in your comments as SOME value.

Yet another great opportunity to bring in traffic! I had my site on TechTV’s The Screen Savers back in 2001 and it brought in a good amount of traffic.

The funny thing with all of these interviews is that they all ask you the same general questions :)

John, I saw you on CityTV from Toronto, we have timeshifting and there you were! I almost had a heart attack, I couldn’t believe it! How did you get a gig like that? How did they even hear about you! Now you have really made it…next is Larry King Live…or is that just drunk talk?

Anyway, congrats on the live interview and TV coverage John. It seems you have your own Media Chow Chow Train chugging along. You’re picking up so much free exposure you’ll need to write a blog post on how I get so much free media exposure pretty soon.

TV is all too fun. I really enjoy how-to seminars even more. There is so much value in being trained in public speaking. It gives you great marketing and then you can even try something I find even more entertaining: radio shows! I worked with some doctors on a radio show once in the past: too much fun!

Congratulations John… now us peons have to figure out how to get media attention when we’re NOT raking in 30k per month

For those of you who do want to get on TV/radio/newspaper/magazines but don’t have John’s traffic (and other) stats, you need to do two things. The first is ASK. When I was in grade 12 in 2005/06 and there was the teacher strike in BC, I e-mailed CTV that morning (promtness is key) and asked if they wanted to interview a grade 12 student who’s chances at scholarships was reduced by this strike and see things from a student’s point of view. Two hours later I was in the car headed east to Vancouver and by 11am had shot a segment that ended up on the 6 o clock news. This only happened because I ASKED if they wanted me on their show; I knew no one at CTV.

Also, try and do something related to your niche. If you run a dog training site, try and get an interview at a dog walk, etc.

Just some tips to consider for those envying John’s real-world media attention.

Feeding news to the press is a nice touch. They have to worry about content just as much as a good blogger. On a side note, I always find it amusing when people on TV or print media complain about bloggers. They like to put out a claim that the accuracy on the news is not certain. Let me tell you a little secret, I’ve known indepth background on plenty of reports. Every single one of them had errors. EVERY SINGLE ONE!
