John Chow on The Lab with Leo Laporte

written by John Chow on July 6, 2007

How to make $593 in less than one hour

Here is the video of the interview I did on the Lab with Leo Laporte. I want thank Greg Morgan for ripping the interview off his TiVO and uploading it to YouTube. Greg did need my help to do it however. He had no way to transferring a TiVO show into his computer so I gave him a cool little video capture device from ADS Tech call InstantDVD + MP3. The device did a great job. Enjoy the video.

you may take the title of “King of All Media” from Howard Stern

a video a day July 6, 2007 at 12:51 pm

that’s a such casual talk show

i rather like it

i’m quite surprised that leo laporte did not know ReviewMe

MrGPT July 6, 2007 at 4:23 pm

Yeah, me too.

Goob July 6, 2007 at 8:35 pm

From listening to TWIT (the tech podcast of Leo’s), I’ve found that sometimes he doesn’t know some of the most general things the slightly more then casual Internet surfer would know. Then he’ll come out of nowhere and surprise me with the amount of other tech stuff he does know!

cooliojones July 6, 2007 at 5:18 pm

But how many media outlets does John use? Maybe he can take the internet title away from Al Gore!

ritchie July 7, 2007 at 6:10 am

Definitely – what about a worldwide radioshow?

Real Estate Editorial July 6, 2007 at 10:36 am

Thanks, I look forward to watching this

simon July 6, 2007 at 11:45 am

No one want to miss this one.

website copywriter July 6, 2007 at 1:59 pm

Just watched it. SO cool, I must say. That Leo guy is so adorable. Well, you are, too, John, but I guess you already knew that.

Don Wilson July 6, 2007 at 4:04 pm

Wow, I’m surprised that you guys don’t know about Leo. He’s very famous amongst geeks, at least those who watched TechTV before it was bought out by that horrible G4TV network.

MrGPT July 6, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Oh, I know! G4TV is sooo… bleh. TechTV was way better!

Jason (blogAGLOCO.com) July 6, 2007 at 9:21 pm

I agree TechTV was much better than G4TV. ‘Call For Help’ and ‘The Screensavers’ with Leo was great back then.

Ron July 6, 2007 at 10:46 am

Very nicely done, saw this over on Harpzon first :P .

Lewis Empire July 6, 2007 at 10:51 am

Great promotion for your blog. I noticed your RSS has gone way up recently.

simon July 6, 2007 at 11:39 am

Traditional media still a good way to promote websites. My blog has been noticed on some news paper then in that day or two they brought me lots traffic.

Goob July 6, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Same here. Anybody who thinks TV, radio, or print is useless for promoting a website obviously needs to try it! Chances are they’ll be pleasantly surprised.

MrGPT July 6, 2007 at 4:25 pm

Wow, yeah! A 218 jump in the readers!

Stas K. July 6, 2007 at 11:09 am

Congratz!
I agree with Lewis Empire, it’s a great promotion for the blog :)

fouad zaryouh July 6, 2007 at 11:11 am

Nice done.
Keep the great job.

take care

MillionDollarJourney July 6, 2007 at 11:20 am

John, did you get any traffic from doing the show?

Goob July 6, 2007 at 11:26 am

Yeah, I was about to ask that exact same question! Any decent traffic spike recently?

simon July 6, 2007 at 11:32 am

No doubt, john will get some traffic from the interview.

SEO Optimization July 6, 2007 at 12:03 pm

Well, just 2 days ago John Chow had around 5k feed readers…today John has reached 6k readers the whole day. I would believe he has received a nice “spike” of traffic (even tho i don’t know when the show went live, or when was the video uploaded).

a video a day July 6, 2007 at 12:52 pm

i’m sure it helps

ritchie July 7, 2007 at 6:11 am

there’s always some figures that remain after such spikes.

MrGPT July 6, 2007 at 4:26 pm

I believe he did, at least in RSS readers. Unless it was just a coincidence, but it does look like he got a good chunk of new readers.

simon July 6, 2007 at 11:27 am

Great! Thanks for ripping the interview. Now everyone can enjoy it.

Michael Kwan July 6, 2007 at 11:31 am

Nice stuff. Maybe you should ask for some sort of kickback from ReviewMe, TLA, and Kontera for plugging them in the interview.

simon July 6, 2007 at 11:35 am

Good point! I think john don’t need ask for it. Eventually, those ad networks will pay him. More people know about those ad networks, more advertiser will come to JohnChow.com either buy reviews or links. Good for John.

Steve's Tech Blog July 6, 2007 at 11:38 am

John is not that

But he should get a kickback from The Lab with Leo for promoting the show with is blog. Now, that would be

website copywriter July 6, 2007 at 2:01 pm

Oh they’re probably already thinking of taking John out for lunch or something. Those sponsored meals aren’t too bad, if you ask me.

John Cow July 6, 2007 at 11:36 am

3 reviews $1200? Shouldn’t that be $600 since reviewme takes 50% ?

Steve's Tech Blog July 6, 2007 at 11:43 am

Yes but it’s the speed of the interview that did not left him time to correct Leo on that.

John Cow July 6, 2007 at 11:48 am

oooooh, ok.

simon July 6, 2007 at 11:43 am

You are right, JohnCOW

Santosh P July 6, 2007 at 11:46 am

They just misunderstood with the 400$ reviewme banner, and Our Mr.Chow just kept quite

I would see  in that too..

@ John… Any updates about ur ranking in Google ??

MrGPT July 6, 2007 at 4:27 pm

Really? I had no idea they took 50% of it…
That kind of … sucks.

Goob July 6, 2007 at 8:37 pm

We all misspeak from time to time, right? :)

chrisblogging.com July 6, 2007 at 11:51 am

Cool! I cant wait to watch!

Santosh P July 6, 2007 at 11:56 am

for me watching from India, where I dunno whats this Lab with Leo all about… I feel labwitgleo.com is promoting his site with help of JohnChow…

John you should have charged him or a review too :P

Dave July 6, 2007 at 12:05 pm

“That’s always a possibility, but at the moment, NO”

Debo Hobo July 6, 2007 at 12:11 pm

Watched it once, now I gotta watch it again. You know just to make sure I got all the tips even the subliminal ones.

a video a day July 6, 2007 at 12:58 pm

there’s no point watching it twice as you know it all by reading john’s blog

Debo Hobo July 6, 2007 at 1:08 pm

Or perhaps I just like to watch the master at work.

Lewis Empire July 6, 2007 at 1:14 pm

Maybe John’s subliminal messages are forcing you to watch again and again…

MrGPT July 6, 2007 at 4:27 pm

John’s evil laugh is trying to tell me something …

Jamaipanese July 6, 2007 at 12:13 pm

great interview

kudos John!

Debo Hobo July 6, 2007 at 12:21 pm

I like that you showed him what he was doing wrong. He clearly had not read your http://www.johnchow.com/book/make-money-online.pdf other wise he would have known how to become part of the Kontera profit making empire. Oh well too bad for him. I’m sure you had him sit down and read it immediately off the air.

MrGPT July 6, 2007 at 4:28 pm

Hahaha, he probably did make John sit there and ask a lot of questions after. Did he do that John?

Terra Andersen July 6, 2007 at 1:09 pm

John, you are now a star! Time to start going out in public in disguises so you don’t get mobbed!

website copywriter July 6, 2007 at 2:04 pm

With a guy that tall and good looking? It’s gonna be tough disguising himself in public.

ritchie July 7, 2007 at 6:13 am

time for your own reality tv-show!

D&D Nerd.com July 6, 2007 at 1:47 pm

Out of curiosity, how nervous were you on the set John? You seemed rather quiet.

And I thought you were more charismatic than what I saw in that vid! :-p

MrGPT July 6, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Yeah, it did look like he was a little nervous, but I’m sure that’s because he hasn’t done a lot of on-air interviews before.

website copywriter July 6, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Awesome interview. I think Leo was able to get a lot of info from John in such a short time. Good stuff, great show. Thanks for sharing the clip with us!

Search Engine Marketing July 6, 2007 at 2:25 pm

John,

You look good on TV!

Darin

simon July 6, 2007 at 6:22 pm

John not just looks good. He looks GREAT!

shman July 6, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Great interview. That was something! Grats John, one more time.

cooliojones July 6, 2007 at 3:18 pm

It’s cool that you got the interview, more exposure and more money!! But I hate it when they ask those questions and they either already know the answer or they are just following their script. But hey, if we wanna be like you John, it’s just something we’ll have to deal with!!

Lance July 6, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Thats cool

MrGPT July 6, 2007 at 4:59 pm

Congrats on the interview John! It looks like your RSS readers has increased by a great amount!

Shawn Knight July 6, 2007 at 6:06 pm

Nice clip, thanks for sharing. This is the first time I’ve seen Leo since back in the TechTV “The ScreenSavers” day.

personal blog July 6, 2007 at 6:11 pm

That’s pretty cool John. How long have you lived in Canada? Your voice doesn’t sound like you’ve lived there long. Or is english your second language?

rob July 6, 2007 at 6:16 pm

The more exposure the better – John’s got the internet on lockdown, now it’s time for the small screen. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a johnchow.com promo on a summer blockbuster movie next!

simon July 6, 2007 at 6:23 pm

That would be amazing!!

Mybloggo July 6, 2007 at 6:59 pm

Thats For that Video..

Zac Johnson July 6, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Awesome video, though it was funny because all the info was so obvious to all your current readers. I liked it!

Aaron Martin July 6, 2007 at 8:35 pm

I am new to all of this, but I have found everything I have read, and now watched very helpful. Thanks for helping the future possibilities of others. Peace!!

Jason (blogAGLOCO.com) July 6, 2007 at 9:40 pm

Haven’t been keeping up with what Leo has been up to, but I thought it was a nice video, and contained some interesting information about your blog John.

Eli July 6, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Saw this on Mitch’s blog, I found it really interesting. Congrats :)

Hip Hop July 6, 2007 at 11:46 pm

hey that looks pretty cool

ritchie July 7, 2007 at 6:14 am

yeah, a born media professional!

Carl Pei July 7, 2007 at 2:10 am

I’ve been waiting for this video. Thanks.

ritchie July 7, 2007 at 6:16 am

how long have you been waiting?

kingkong July 7, 2007 at 2:08 pm

 haha loved you on the lab, any tips for beginners for adding widgets and ratings on posts?

cyberjack88 July 7, 2007 at 6:53 pm

Saw u on Lab w Leo… cool.

Does that little dvd gizmo also rip Rogers Motorola PVR?

How about making your site a little more mobile friendly?

Thanks 4 all the great ideas.

cj

John Chow July 8, 2007 at 10:38 am

Yes it can rip from any PVR.

Real Estate Editorial July 8, 2007 at 9:12 am

I finally got a chance to watch this. It was great, everything John talked about on the show he has blogged about.

Richard Miller July 9, 2007 at 9:06 am

John, have you ever thought of starting a vlog with like the latest tips and tricks told by you and recorded on a video clip? I guess that this could drive a great interest towards you and the thing you do and tell people.

Miss604 July 9, 2007 at 10:07 am

Great spot! Thanks for the tips, John.

ouchs July 13, 2007 at 12:37 am

great media coverage john!

Savvy Frugality July 14, 2007 at 12:07 am

I don’t care what the critics say, John. I thought you did a great job with the interview and you got across the main points that you discuss in your blog. I have learned a lot by reading your blog over the past few weeks and have started a blog of my own. It’s still a work in progress but I am learning a lot by reading your site. Keep up the great work!
